“O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and His mercy endureth forev- er.” These words, drawn from Scripture, can be used as a prayer of thanks- giving following one’s meal. Are they being used? Perhaps, but maybe not. Many Christians pray before they begin eating, but my guess is that once the meal is finished, the plate is pushed away and they leave the table without a prayer of thanks. The meal is done, and thanks to God is assumed, even though not spoken. Too often that’s the case when it comes to the church as well. We ask God to bless our congregation, its people, our events and activities, and so forth, and when God does, we assume He knows we’re thankful. But we don’t always tell Him. So, even though it’s February and not November, even though we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, and not Thanksgiving, I nevertheless would like to give thanks to our gracious and merciful Lord for all the blessings we once again experienced this past year of 2017. I’m thankful for so many things that have happened at Divine Redeemer in the very recent past. Things like our wonderful sermon series and worship celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Ref- ormation and the fantastic study trip to Germany with 40 phenomenal Lutheran Christians. What a wonderful way to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther’s posting of the 95 Theses on October 31, 1517. I’m thankful for our “Joining Jesus On His Mission” book study, sermon series, and worship opportunities which empowered all of us to be “neighborhood missionaries,” to the people in our own community. I’m still hearing good things about our evangelistic emphasis JJOHM. Who can forget how it culminated in the “Serve Sun- day,” where hundreds of our fellow members put their faith into action and became involved with many different kinds of community service, joining Jesus on His mission of tak- ing the Gospel to the streets. I’m thankful for the generosity of our members who sup- ported a school none of us ever visited; a school in Houston, Texas, severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey, and made whole again, thanks, in great part, to the outpouring of finan- cial resources made possible by the good folks of DR. I’m thankful for the many, many volunteers who are the life-blood of both our church and school, led by our new Director of Connections, Mrs. Stacy Bader. I’m thankful for our parochial day school, DRLS, led by Mr. O and his large and very talented faculty and staff, all of whom touch children’s minds and hearts with the Good News of Jesus on a daily basis. I’m likewise thankful for our new Director of Youth Minis- try, Mrs. Ann Marie Hahn, who provides leadership and faith enrichment for our junior and senior high young people. I’m thankful for the 64 new members that were brought into meaningful church membership, so many, in fact, that they couldn’t all fit on the stage in our gym during their offi- cial reception. What a sight! 2018 is bright with promise and future blessing as well. I look forward to a foreign mission trip; continued member- ship growth, and because of that growth, the exciting possi- bility of future campus expansion, under the guidance and leadership of Groth Design. February 15, 2018 marks the 9th year of my ministry among you, God’s people, of Divine Redeemer. These past nine years have literally flown by. Each and every day of each of these past years, have been “wow” experiences for me, as I have watched God continue to do some mighty things among us at DR. So, is it fitting to give thanks in February? Of course it is! Just as it is fitting to give God thanks for all His blessings every month of the year; every week of the month, and every day of the week. For as they say, “God is good all the time.” “O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and His mercy endureth forever” Have a Happy Thanksgiving...in February and through- out 2018. Spiritual Gifts and How to Use Them Spiritual gifts are given to those who receive God’s gift of salvation in Christ. They are to be utilized for the good of others and for His glory. As we use our gifts, we experience per-sonal fulfillment and a deep sense of joy. Using your spiritual gifts is a process and through it we mature in our faith and that gift. Over the next few months I will take this opportunity to describe a few of the most prominent spiritual gifts and how they can be utilized at DRLC. Look them over, pray about your spiritual gifts and ask God to lead you to follow His will. Spiritual gift of “Helps” The gift of helps is the special ability to invest one’s talents in the life and ministry of other members of the Body, thus enabling the persons helped to increase their effectiveness in the use of their gifts. (1 Cor. 12:28, 1 Timothy 6:2 1, Peter 4:9-10, Mark 2:3-4 Acts 9:36,Romans 16:1-2)

Characteristics:· Behind the scenes service to others· Sensitive to the needs of others and willing to help meet those needs· Serving is the heartbeat of their lives· Sees serving as a spiritual discipline· Helpful / Willing / Dependable / Practical / “Whatever it takes”Cautions:· Remember the spiritual importance of this gift and do not feel it is not as important as other gifts· It is okay to say “no”· Don’t forget to let others serve you· Don’t neglect your family as you help others· Let others help, too

There are many practical ways to utilize this gift at DR. Here are just a few:· Greeter before services· Join an Altar Guild team preparing the altar for Sunday worship· Join a Contemporary Service set-up crew (gym)· Join the Banquet Meal team preparing meals for funerals, in-church meetings, etc· Volunteer to work the Welcome Center before a service· Join the Fellowship Team setting up/cleaning up coffee/donuts in the cafeteria on Sundays· Join the mowing team· Adopt a flower bed to weed throughout the summer· Pick produce in the Community Garden· Office helper· Join the “Bakers” team helping to provide baked goods when needed for various events

These are a just a few ways to “help” at DRLC. Come see me and we can help get you plugged in if this is one of your spiritual gifts!

IS A BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION GIFT RIGHT FOR YOU?If you are interested in or have questions about making a beneficiary designation gift to impact the work of our organization, please contact us.

• Revocable—You can modify or revoke the beneficiary designations at any time during your lifetime.

• Avoid Probate—Gifting assets via a beneficiary designation will avoid the probate process.

• Easy to Do—Simply fill out a brief beneficiary designation form provided by the plan or account administrator. (You will need the legal name and tax ID number of our organization).

• Tax Savings—By making a gift of your retirement plan to our organization, your estate will receive a 100% charitable deduction, thereby saving estate taxes, and will avoid the income taxes on those assets. By comparison, if your estate were subject to the estate tax, your retirement plan would be subject to estate taxes, and if you left your retirement plan to children or grandchildren, those assets would result in substantial income taxes. From a tax perspective, your retirement plan is a “good” asset to leave to charity and can be a “bad” asset to leave to family.

• Inexpensive—In most cases, there is no need to amend your will or trust, thus saving legal fees.

A BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION GIFT TO IMPACT OUR WORKEtta and her late husband Luther had been longtime supporters of our organization. She had been thinking about how she could make a significant gift to support our work. She met with her attorney to explain her goals and describe her assets. Originally, she thought about leaving her IRA to her kids and other assets to charity.

Her attorney suggested a different strategy. He explained that if her children inherited the IRA, the estate would pay estate taxes, and her children would pay income taxes on the IRA. But, by giving the IRA to charity and other assets to her children, Etta could still provide a nice inheritance to her children while avoiding the income tax!

Etta contacted her IRA custodian, who sent her an IRA beneficiary designation form. She completed the form, named our organization as the primary beneficiary of her IRA and mailed the form back. Etta was thrilled with the plan.

The winter months often feel dormant and confining as the weather can shut you in with snowy storms, slippery roads, and blustery cold winds. These same storms though often bring beautiful ice-lined trees that resemble lace and remind us of the glorious gift God has given to us in our seasons. This “indoor weather” presents Divine Redeemer Lutheran School with prime opportunities for fellowship, fun, family, and fes-tivities. Some of these include Valentine’s Day parties, tournaments and open houses. The doors are always open at Divine Redeemer Lutheran School inviting guests to step out of the cold and into the warmth of a great school family!Mark Your Calendars for these Important EventsFriday, Feb 2 School Indoor Movie NightSunday, Feb 4 Five Year Old Kindergarten sings at 10:30 AM in the SanctuaryWeek Feb 5 – 9 Spirit Week (See article)Thursday, Feb 8 School Pep RallyFeb 8 – 10 DRLS Basketball TournamentMonday, Feb 12 Professional Development Day / NO SCHOOLWednesday, Feb 14 Class Valentine’s Day PartiesThursday, Feb 15 All School Open House - Drop in 8 AM – 8 PMFriday, Feb 16 Divine Redeemer Auction at 5:30 PM Lake Country Lutheran High SchoolSunday, Feb 18 3rd & 4th Grade Choir sings at 10:30 AM in SanctuaryTuesday, Feb 20 All School Open House - Drop in 8 AM – 8 PMThursday, Feb 22 Third & Fourth Grade Musical “Jonah’s Druthers” 6:30 PM in the gymSunday, Feb 25 1st & 2nd Grade Choir sings at 10:30 AM in SanctuaryWednesday, Feb 28 “3 & 4 Year Old Classroom Experience” at 11:45 AM – 1:30 PM MUST PRE-REGISTER
