For, there are 10 accident- prone intersections in the city. And, these have been officially identified by the police. A rise in the number of accidents at par- ticular roads spurred the traffic police to conduct a detailed study. The cops finally declared transport light point in Sector 26, railway light point, Shastri Nagar light point, Manimajra, airport light point, Hallomajra light point, Sector 46-47-48-49 light point, Sec- tor 45-46-49-50 light point, Sector 25-38 light point, Sector 44-45-50-51 light point and Dhanas-EWS flats crossing as risky. They have submitted the details to the engineering wing of the UT administration, asking them to make necessary arrangements. Maneesh Chaudhary, SSP (traffic and se- curity), said, "Teams prepared the list of black spots or intersections after visiting the sites. We have submitted the list to the engi- neering wing to look into the aspect and take steps to turn them safe and secure." Some of these intersections were found located on key roads like Madhya Marg, while a few linked Chandigarh with neigh- bouring states. Besides bikes and cars, heavy vehicles too ply on some of these roads dur- ing day and night hours. UT chief engineer S K Chadha said, "We have received a list of the intersections. It has been sent to the Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi. Their experts will visit the spot and tell us what problems lies with these spots due to which they have turned accidental and suggest remedies." Till June 28, the traffic police have re- ported 208 accidents in the city, out of which, 58 were fatal. TIMES NEWS NETWORK Mohali: Two Delhi residents were killed and their friend seriously injured when their car collided with an unidentified vehicle in the wee hours of Sunday on the Kura- li highway. The victims were Jai Raj, 35, and Dinesh Singh, 30. The sole survivor, Gurbachan Singh, 30, sustained life-threatening inju- ries. All three were government employees in New Delhi. They had come to Kurali for settling a prop- erty-related matter, said police. All of them were rushed to PGI, where Jai and Dinesh were de- clared brought dead. The three friends were return- ing to Delhi when the vehicle rammed into their car. Its driver fled. Police officials said there were no CCTV cameras at the ac- cident spot. Raj was driving the car that after the collision rolled into deep ditch before striking trees, said police. Sources said the condition of Gurbachan Singh, who was rushed to PGI, was stabilizing. He was sitting next to the driver. Kurali SHO Dharampal Singh said a police team rushed to the spot and victims were taken to a nearby hospital, from where they were referred to PGI. The police have registered a case against under sections 304A (death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving), 427 (mischief caus- ing damage) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or person- al safety of others) of the IPC. The area adjoining the hos- pital turned into a police camp when about 200 police person- nel, including heads of all the wings and all SHOs, were sum- moned to control the protes- ters. Inspector Uday Pal, station house officer of Sector 17, and his gunmen were chased and attacked by the men and wom- en holding slippers and bricks. The injured included eight- year old Lavit Kumar, Preet Singh, 15, Dilip Kumar, 32, Ash- ish Kumar Pathak, 37, Mamta Pathak and Sarjudhin Khan among others. The protest began outside the office of deputy commis- sioner (DC) in Sector 17 when about 100 persons attempted to stop official vehicles around 11.30 am. TIMES NEWS NETWORK Chandigarh: Four days af- ter an incident of sexual ha- rassment was reported by a Panjab University (PU) hos- teller, students on Monday demanded better security and a ban on entry of out- siders inside the PU cam- pus. Two different groups – Students for Society (SFS) and Hindustan Students As- sociation (HSA) -- protested against the incident, with the key demand being moni- toring of vehicle movement around the girls’ hostels on campus. Both groups demanded a ban on entry of outside vehi- cles inside the campus, as all such incidents had reported the involvement of outside- rs. “The authorities have failed to take any strict mea- sures to counter such inci- dents. We demand immedi- ate and strictest action against all the four ac- cused,” said SFS president Arishdeep. “The university should be divided into security zones, with different offi- cers responsible for each so that they can respond promptly to any complaint and nab the culprits before they leave the campus. Out- siders shouldn’t be allowed to enter without submitting their licences at the gate, which they can collect while leaving the campus,” said Krishn Sheoran, HSA presi- dent. As hydrogen chloride (HCL) gas leaked in the area around 5.30 am on Sunday, people in nearby areas start- ed complaining of breath- lessness and nausea, but no help came from the adminis- tration. Local residents said neither medical teams were sent nor any officials visited the area even hours after the incident. There are over 30 facto- ries, mostly pharmaceutical and chemical units, along the Derabassi-Ambala highway, and the population of nearby villages, including Dappar, Hasanpur and Lehli, was es- timated to be over 50,000. Panic spread to sur- rounding areas but still there was no response from the ad- ministration. While most of these units have safety equipment and strategies in place in case of such incidents, the adminis- tration was hardly prepared. According to experts, in order to tackle such inci- dents, quick response from the administration should be the top priority. “The disas- ter management unit of any administration should be equipped with safety gear like masks and suits and have a stock of medicines for first aid,” they added. Jaskaran Singh, chair- person of department of de- fence and national security studies, Panjab University, said, “Equipment like masks, gloves, detectors and sufficient medical staff should be available at all times. In case of a gas leak, people should first be evac- uated to a safe location. The gas had leaked from the pharma unit of Punjab Chemicals Crop Protection Ltd (PCCPL) in Samleri vil- lage of Lalru. Sucha Ram Ladhar, di- rector-cum-secretary (in- dustries and commerce), Punjab, said, “A probe into the incident will be con- ducted, but we also need to find out whether it was an accident or negligence on part of the factory.” Mohali deputy commis- sioner TPS Sidhu said ac- tion would be taken in case it was a case of negligence. “We are probing the inci- dent and also consulting technical experts. Action will be taken in case if it is a case of negligence,” he said. According to factory of- ficials, the gas had leaked due to a technical snag. PCCPL vice-president Ravinder Chandha said, “The gas leakage was con- trolled within a few min- utes and the leak was not harmful. It only caused mi- nor infection and irrita- tion.” There were about 150 workers in the factory at the time of the incident. When confronted, they are said to have turned abusive and passed offensive remarks. The girls’ car was also stalked by the guys from the hostel to Sector 15 market where they surrounded it and made obscene gestures. The complainants demanded that the complaint should go to the police through PUCASH, which has been done. The cell has now asked the police to trace the jeep and hand over all details to the university. Chandigarh: A lathichargeon aggressive protesters de-manding cancellation of ademolition drive on Kachi Col-ony, Dhanas, triggered a vio-lent clash between them andthe police just outside Govern-ment Multi-specialty Hospital,Sector 16, leaving 13 persons,including children, womenand policemen, injured.

Mohali: A day after hydro-gen chloride (HCL) gas wasleaked from a pharmaceuti-cal factory in Lalru, Punjab,the industries departmentand Mohali administrationofficials said on Mondaythat an investigation intothe incident was under way.
