UNLIKE ORDINARY PEAI days, students came to PEAI at an early time in the morning with a big smile hanging on their

Dennis Teacher first arranged this camp for the PEAI students' extra opportunity to experience the "real" debate. The debate was divided into Junior and Senior division, each of them having 3 different motions and 1 Impromptu debate. “By that, we were able to dream higher

of one’s future”

FORMER PEAI 7TH grade teacher Andrew Choi gets hugely successful on the show K-POP- STAR.

He has been performing great songs which allowed him to go from top 10 to Top 3. Highlight of this week, on March 31st, Andrew sang the song ‘BABY’ but fails to reach the finals of the show. Most people believe that if he chose a song that wasn’t song by other singers on the show, he might have gone on to the finals. What he and SM Entertainment BOA decided on the picked song was that they might be able to overpower bang ye- Dam’s version of the song. Maybe it was that he had the feeling that he wanted to win or it might have been not but the three judges stated that he wasn’t like the Andrew Choi they used to know. He received the total score of 265 points which wasn’t enough for him to win the round. His last words on the show were about thanking his supporters, his family and friends. On March 24 he performed the song ‘ 빗속에서’ and got a fantastic score which was the highest score of the round and the best

score he got so far. The 3 judges each gave him a score of 95, 90, and 96 out of 100 and the total score of 281 out of 300. He scored about 10 points higher than other teams which led him to cast from one of the judges. He confidently went up to Top 3 and was casted by SM entertainment once more. His performance was complimented by JYP about how he fixed the problems he had when he sing. He promised to show a better performance next week supported by SM Entertainment. Also, two weeks ago, Andrew surprised the judges and all of the audience by proposing to his girlfriend Estelle bringing a great effect to him. His Popularity went straight up until he reached to the semifinals of the show.

However, some of you might not know well about Andrew teacher or the K-POP-STAR show. He

came from Newark, New Jersey and he taught the seventh grade for the entire year of 2011. During that time, he was also in contract with SM Entertainment to write songs. SM Entertainment also rented a house temporally to write songs. He stated that this friend from SM (Entertainment! who urged and told him that he had the possibility to success well by the show. Also, you might not know well about the show. This show is a survival audition program in which three managers of the biggest music companies in Korea judge the teams applied and chose a winner. The final winner gets 300million won and Debut right away and a Sudan car. ©Christopher Kim

PEAI’s Own KPop StarAndrew Choi’s remarkable run on KPop Star Season 2

NOWADAYS, STUDENTS JUST memorize many

mathematical formulas. Because of this, students lost courage and joy while studying it. At least Korea students were 1st at math, and 2nd at science above 50 countries. The total score was the 3rd above them. Then, we need to look at how they enjoy studying those subjects. It is very shocking that in 2006, we were the lowest grade-55th out of 57 countries. Furthermore, the student`s whose career is scientists are decreasing.

This is the result of making students memorize just mathematical formulas, and study with no experiences and joy. However, now, Korea is starting to make students able to learn all different subjects, such as math and science, in one textbook, called STEAM education. STEAM Education is an education ` t r end ` where sc ience , techno logy , engineering, art, and math are all learnt

together. The teachers make students plan and experience given experiments. By this, the students should notice how this relates to their own lives, and form problem-solving capability. This type of education is just right for Korea, since Korea needs people who are able to adjust to a knowledge-based society at the future. Not only they should contain knowledge and technology, they need creativity and enough sensitivity.

Nearest type of STEAM education had started in U.S. at 1990. U.S wanted to reinforce math and science, so they firstly made STEM education, not containing art. Then they included art and finally STEAM education was

created. This had been sent to Korea officially

at 2013. Korean governments try to make movements toward the STEAM education, and they started to make new textbooks based on this education.

One example of STEAM education question can be about a story-telling question. There will be a story given, and the questions at the end. The student will need basic technology and science facts, and reading skills. Like this,

even though they are solving a math question, they need many other skills. When STEM part is used to make amalgamative studies, art is more used for finding about themselves and the environment, and

increasing students` creativity. STEAM

education`s goal is to make student have more creativity and skill to blend in the subjects into one.

A STEAM education should prepare for the student`s future, while traditional ones only prepare for middle, high, college tests. Also, STEAM education contains many resources, various materials and experiences while teaching, but teachers only rely on textbooks.

Furthermore, STEAM education contains several creative answers in one question, and they improve critical thinking skills. However traditional education has only one answer, and rely about the answer`s wrong or right. ©Annie Lee

A Chance to Debate!

AS PEAI STUDENTS, the contest name KEDC might sound familiar to us. As

the abbreviation of “Korean English Debate Championship”, this contest is one of many debate contests, such as the NSDC (National Schools Debating Championship!. It opened at Daewon Foreign High School, the Semi finals on February 16th, 2013, and the Grand finals on the 17th, one day after the Semi finals. Opened by the KEDC committee, 52 teams participated, and 8 PEAI teams were known to participate.

For this KEDC competition, PEAI provided preparing classes. Every Wednesday before KEDC, Roy · Sam · Paul taught the students 4 times. Also, there were 2 final practice classes right before the contest. Taught

by Dennis, he told us about the prepared motions, and picked 2 times randomly to conduct a debate in front of the others.

We need to know about the competition- how is it done? It is done in the Asian Parliamentary Debate format, which we form 1 team with 4 people. "can be made of different grades or schools! For the impromptu rounds, there are 40 minutes of preparation time. There are 3 motions for a single theme, and the two teams choose what motion to debate

about by tossing coins. For the prepared rounds, the debate starts

without any delay. Moreover, we also have to know about the regulations for cheating. Carrying electronic dictionaries or cell phones are considered as cheating even though we did not use it. Except almanacs and Korean-English dictionaries, we cannot use any printed material in the impromptu rounds. We cannot bring printed material onto the podium for the prepared rounds. Also, we cannot speak to our parents or teachers when the students move to their rooms after the motion for the impromptu rounds come out.

Many who participate in this competition think that these rules are too harsh. I do understand that it is a contest, so they need rules, but these rules are too strict. Some teams got accused of cheating and got disqualified for the contest because they wrote notes on the back of printed material and brought it out. It’s like the contradiction of regulations- if we make them less harsh, people cheat floating just above the rules. And if the rules are too harsh, there are people who disqualify just under the rules. But what can we do? The best we can do is to prepare for these rules to not be disqualified.

As my overall opinion I felt that more than we thought, the teams’ skills were focused on winning the debate. The skills to make other teams feel bad were more of a priority than debating skills. One mannerless team said, “Shame” during our speeches, and they kept giving ridiculous POI’s. When we declined them, they whispered to themselves, “It’s because they’re not sure of what they are talking about.” This was only one ridiculous team that we faced, but I don’t think this is the only team in the competition that was rude. I don’t think the PEAI teams were trained for this. But instead of making the other team upset, we should just increase our debating skills. If anyone

wants to participate in a debate competition, remember that there are many people who use small tricks. If you want to get a prize, I suggest you prepare for these tricks before you go. ©Erika Lee

IT ALL STARTED when a few kids

wanted to make something inspirational. J, S, and T decided that they were going to have a f ew teache r s speak some inspirational speeches to the PEAI students, and maybe even further than that . So they started brainstorming and they made a plan. They “hired” all the teachers they needed and then they

planned to borrow a stage for this conference, and to borrow that stage, the biggest problem they faced was the financial issues.

In Class 8C-DM1, our whole class decided that we would help them make the money. We started off by taking a few extra minutes out of class time, and our whole class

agreed on the fact that a bake sale and flea market would be a good idea. We decided to do the bake sale first.

The next Monday, a problem occurred. A few students got the wrong information and brought their cookies and cakes and ice cream to PEAI! We didn’t know what to do with the food, but we couldn’t make them

take it back because they had spent so much time with their families prepping for this event. Our class then decided that we had to a bake sale. A very small one. So all of a sudden we were moving our tables downstairs and selling cookies and brownies

What’s a pecan tart?An eighth grade student’s story of the tumultuous 8C-DM1 bake sale

and a lot of other goodies.

The next Friday, there was the Flea Market+Mini-Bake Sale. We sold books, DVDs, chocolates, cookies, ice cream, and other things such as hats and autographed baseballs. By adding up our money from the sudden bake sale and the flea market, we were all happy to hear that we had reached our goal!

There are a lot of things I learned from this experience, such as kids can’t make a line

even when 8th graders are yelling

at them to, kids like ice cream "a lot!, kids don’t always bring their money so they end up borrowing money then paying it back the next week or so, kids don’t know what pecan tarts are (WHY?!)……and this list will go on. But I’m not gonna explain every single thing I learned like a boring essay, but I’m going to point out the most

impor tant th ing I lea rned . Teamwork.

As I said before, our whole class participated and was excited. Even though we were a little messy and un-organized "it was our first time! we wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t our whole class. Every student was doing

something. Some were selling, some were in charge of money, s o m e w e r e g o i n g a r o u n d

advertising, some were yelling at kids to stay in line, etc. Our class worked as a REAL TEAM.

What’s teamwork? In the dictionary, is says: cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a

tea or in the interests of a common cause. But I’m going to restate this. Here’s the question again: What’s teamwork? Teamwork is when the members of a team help each other and work as a whole. ©Elizabeth Kwon

Spring is approaching, and finally many of us feel that it is 2013

now for real. Still, some of us cannot let go of the good memories of the year 2012. For some of us students in PEAI, one of those good memories might be the town hall debates. There were 3 debates in total and 3 classes participated in each debate. The one I took place in was held on December. There were 6 topics in total.

But just before the debate began, there was an announcement. An announcement that would later rock the whole room into laughter. That announcement was that two of the topics will be changed

into mystery topics "imprompted topics! that will be known just before that round began. Very unfortunately, one of the best speakers in our team was missing. That was a big problem

Once upon a time, god of angerness Roy Zeus and god of english,

Dennis Hadies had a meeting together. Roy said full of anger, “I’m mad that children aren’t interested in our fantastic and Awsome language, English! How can we make children study our super-cala-fragalistic language?” So, Dennis said, “Lets have a meeting with the other gods too. I can’t think alone”. Thats how the gods had a meeting. Roy called Jennifer Athena, the godess of happiness, Asha Artemmis, the godess of widsom, and god Brenden Apholon, the god of making. The meeting was in the pacific ocean. So when the meeting started, Asha said “We should make a club. Sometimes play games so there will be much fun.” But, Jennifer said “I disagree with

making a club. I think we should make an acadamy. Thesedays, there are many acadamies. So, why don’t we make the best acadamy in the world?” But Asha disagreed. So the gods had a vote. Asha had 14 votes and Jennifer had 16 votes. Jennifer won and they build an acadamy. So, instead, they made a lot of festivals instead of a club. They made a personthat has the same name as them and made them as a student of them. The gods taught students and the students betrayed the gods and made english acadamies. So the gods made a name of the acadamy. PEAI! P is for perfect, E is for English, A

Long time ago, the panda, elephant, albatross, an impala were fiends.

The panda was very cute so people adored her. Its name was Pearl. The elephant was enormous as the Mount Everest. His name was Eddy. The lovely albatross flew as high where angels lived. her name was Annie. The impala was fast as the light’s speed. Its name was Iggie. One day, in the bushy forest they met together. Pearl was eating bamboo trees and Eddy was washing his body was fresh water. Annie was practicing flying high. Iggie was running through the bushes. Then, Eddy said “It’s too boring. Let;s make something that is very fun and interesting!” All of the animals agreed. Pearl was thinking

and thinking then said “Let’s help the humans!”

Then, Iggie and Annie shouted, “Well, how about making an English Acadaemy?” The animals said it was a fine idea. Iggie said “In this acadaemy, let’s make levels too!” All of the animals, shouted

“Yeah!” P for personal thinking, R for Reading, and C for critical!” “Yes! We can make this acadaemy and help the humans as the humans helped us when we were in danger!” Pearl agreed. Then, Pearl, Eddie, Annie, and Iggie made the acadaemy’s name PEAI. Pear as P, Eddie as E, Annie as A and Iggie as I.

THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE is very normal despite

the illusions of it. It’s like any other teachers’ lounge except that it is a little smaller than normal teachers’ lounges. It has two mini couches in the middle of the room, a desk at the left ( a very long desk ), a bulletin board on the wall with paper stapled all over it, a full size refrigerator, and on the right there is a counter with a microwave and a coffee machine.

The teacher’s lounge is a place for the teachers to rest in their free time. It is located next to the CEO room. To go there, you need to go towards the library, turn right, and go straight. It will be on your right. The teacher’s lounge is a mysterious room for students because they are not allowed there. They have no idea what it looks like and what teachers do in there. One student thought that there is a cauldron in the middle of the

room and evil contents like test pop up. Most students think that teachers eat, sleep, and play video games in there. We may know where it is located, but we don’t know what’s going on in there. In this article, we are going to break the mystery of the teacher’s lounge. To find out more, read on. ©Julie Jang, ©Julie

ROY SIN VS. PIZZA DELIVERY MAN

On March 4th, Roy Sin an English teacher at PEAI fought with a pizza delivery man. He fought at his classroom which is the Office. There was no one who actually got injured after this fight.

Roy ordered pizza for his students on 7:00 pm, because

he wanted to celebrate and congratulate his students from being 4th grade. However, the pizza wasn’t delivered until the class ended. His students went home disappointed, and Roy was also disappointed because the pizza wasn’t delivered, and his students teased him as a liar by saying

“Liar, Liar pants on fire.” for not keeping the promise of having a pizza party. Finally, on 10:30 pm, the pizza was del ivered. However , Roy wasn’t so glad. Here is the conversation they had.

Roy: Hey! Why did you come so late?

Delivery Man: We have a lot of people who ordered pizza. Sorry! Bye. Bye.Roy: Hey! (He is very angry and hits him with a stick! Wait…. This is a stem of a plant! What the heck is this? This is supposed to be a stick!Delivery Man: You try to hit me? You chubby guy is trying to hit me? Roy: What? You charming guy? Thank you very much.Delivery Man: You have a lot of problems hearing. (Spreads garlic sauce on Roy’s face!Roy: You bad guy! (Pours Vinegar to the Man!Delivery Man: (Opens up pickles and throw it to Roy!Roy: What a disgusting man! I will sue your company!

Roy actually called the CEO of the pizza company. Roy said “Because of your company’s late pizza, I am now considered as a liar, and I am very disappointed! If you don’t apologize to me right now, I will do a First Proposition Constructive Speech right now!” The CEO said “Uh oh…. We are sorry! I will give you a free pizza!” Roy smiled and jumped in joy saying “Yessssss!” He gave his students the free pizza which ended making everyone happy.

Roy’s student William Park said “We ate 2 pizzas! I am glad Roy is our teacher. He surely wins well! I think if he actually did a First Proposition Constructive Speech on the phone he might have won!” Also one of Roy’s student Thomas Kim said “Roy rocks! He wins everything and everyone! Good for us we have such a good teacher! I regret teasing him as a liar!”

This case of fight ended with everyone smiling and no one getting injured. Next time, try fighting with a pizza delivery man if the pizza is late or argue you are going to do a debate speech on the phone and get a free pizza! ©Holly Jung

MAKERS OF THE PEAI BOOKS REVEALED

Peai, Seoul At 9:43PM March 18th the mysterious maker of the Peai books was revealed!! The maker of the books was Steve currently known to be working in Seocho Peai.

Steve teacher is one of the main teachers who were in charge of making books but because he had to use so much time in grading the low classes with some kids who have bad manner Steve had no more time to make the books then at night. He made a bit every day before going to bed. It was all good until the

books changed. In 2010 4th and 3rd graders who used to use the worldly wise book changed to use the Peai made books this was a big horror for Steve since he had to make more books this made him in hurry for making other grade books and since the books change regularly Steve was getting restless and now he started to make mistakes in the book starting from 1 or 2 but developing into dozen of mistakes. After getting so much difficulty making the books especially the vocabulary book he started some tricks like

repeating same words in the book or even in the chapter. But even with using these tricks he can’t use a lot so he started to shorten the amount of vocabulary wards but because of his boss he was limited to at least ten words he was mad about it and started to make even more m i s takes w i thou t

knowing it. Since the point the amount of mistakes started to increase in amounts. Starting from mistakes as small as having wrong part of sentence and as big as not even making space for context analysis or using wrong meanings or meanings that doesn’t match for does kind of situations. This lead to fight between Steve and his boss. Steve was sent to Seocho branch as probation of having mistakes in books for

students. Which is a very serious matter. Which might make students to decrease it is because that these wrong books might be a reason for the students to prefer other academies which use books from certain publisher which have qualified books with less mistakes which also might affect the Peai profit and make the Peai have bad rumors like this the problem in books might lead to bigger problems.

How the maker was found out is that some reporters were able to notice the book was kind of making that Steve look like god as he always emphasized. But the major clue was that this book had similar

details that Steve once old me and some stuff that I had experienced in Steve’s class. Also there had been some witness that stated they had heard some voices from the teachers’ lounge saying “Steve can’t you make the peai book properly people are complaining about too much mistakes!! Ok!!!” These voices were witnessed by St******** and G********. But not only that some students from last Steve class had heard other teachers coming in booming about mistakes in the book. Which we didn’t understand then. ©Thomas Son

WHY BRENDEN’S ROOM’S WALLPAPER IS PINK

We finally found out why Brenden, a teacher at PEAI has covered his room in pink. Brenden, the currently told the

class that he loved the color white that was so usual at PEAI. But Brenden

liked unusual things. He wanted to color his room in light blue. He

first got permission from CEO. He wanted a professional painter. Because the room size was to be colored in

blue, a popular color, it was very expensive. So he had called for a low skilled painter named Kim Doe Ho

from a company called Cere. The cheap painter arrived fast

with nearly 3 pails. Brenden said he didn’t ask why he brought so

much paint because it was rude. Then, when he arrived at Brenden’s room, the

cheap painter didn’t want to see Brenden how bad he is so he went out to McDonalds’ with Roy, also a PEAI

teacher, who came into PEAI about 2~3 years before. They talked about how PEAI works, what he had to do

etc… Roy had a class soon, so they went back to PEAI each holding a coffee and an ice cream. Brenden knocked on the door but the painter said “Not yet” which made Brenden go downstairs where Café Passucusi was. As he looked above to get a sneak peak at the look at his room, he

dropped his ice cream. He ran inside. He bursted in to his room. He dropped his coffee. Brenden, who

was nearly fainting, said calmly “Why did you color in pink?? I told you I wanted to color in light blue!!”

Painter, who now was looking at Brenden curiously for yelling, said “Because since you said light blue, I brought light

green, pink, and blue. I accidently colored your room in green. I am really sorry about that. I thought you would not like that color because blue wouldn’t cover green which makes your room weird. So I had this light pink which covered up the green. So that’s why I colored

it pink.” Brenden was baffled and stood there until the painter said “Goodbye! I hope you enjoy the color!!” got his stuff and went out. But since it was a thing that he can’t change, he decided to like the color pink. But it was very difficult because he couldn’t concentrate on his work because pink was so standing out, and got

teased by the students. He even showed us the little green prints at the back where it is now covered in black smudges. I interviewed

Roy, who was right next to him because the racket he made was so noisy. “I’d never seen somebody running so fast like that! He almost shot up like a lightning bolt and within a second, he was yelling at the painter why he colored his room in pink. It was just hilarious. I still get laughs from that day…” ©Sally Lee

because the topic that he had to speak on

was one of the mystery topics! Right then and there, our whole team was in a panic. Then we rearranged our order. A student named Jenny Koh and I was supposed to do the mystery topics, and everything else was very similar. While our team was in panic, the other two seemed to be very calm and ready. The debate had begun. An overview of this debate was awesome. Every student seemed to use every piece of knowledge and logic in

trying to finish their speeches well and persuading the audience. The POIs "point of information! were also very logical and attacked every part of weakness they could find in a speaker’s speech. Before I talk about the mystery topics, I would like to say that I had never seen a debate this fantastic before. I also want to thank all the debaters that night for being so good at debate, teaching me so many perspectives to look at

a topic.

Every speech contained the faith in every classmate and their teamwork. I think it was a wonderful way to mark te beautiful ending month of the year: faith and beautiful teamwork. ©Ikhun Lee
