PERSONAL INFORMATION

Valério de Araújo Silva is born in Brazil in 1985. He specializes in archi-tecture “Práticas Projetuais em Arquitetura e Engenharia” at the Federal University of Piauí (2012) and studies in the faculty of architecture in the University of Porto, Portugal (2008-2009). He collects experiences as an architect in the Municipality of Teresina, working as Project Analyst (2013) and Project Manager (from 2014 to 2015). In addition he is co-founder of the office NUMMA ARCHITECTS based in Teresina, Piauí (from 2012 to 2015).

The project was developed from studies based on the wishes of users and a survey of the current situation of shelters. The new bus stops were designed to suit the characteristics of the place where they will be installed, respecting the existing dimensions and solar orientation. The project seeks, as far as possible, to provide more shade, rain protection, more comfortable seats during the time of waiting and facilitate air circulation.

Overall there are six types of ”Paradas de ônibus”. The models have been drawn, taking into account the weather, the type of road (street or avenue) and the sidewalk. The project uses sustainable materials and seeks to react to the climate issues of the city of Teresina. The new models of busstops are completely metallic, which allows the removal and relocation of the structure.

CERAMICS (Use of local materials in order to strengthen the identification with the users)

ECOLOGICAL (The growing of vine behind a metallic screen, aims to give the highest possible natural thermal comfort)

HIGH TECH (Uses transparency behind the polycarbonate to make the buildings or monument of historic areas visible)

CULTURAL (Installs a panel for artistic interventions)

COBOGÓ (Decorates and uses hollow closure “Cobogó”, improving the air circulation and referencing the local architecture)

BRISES (The use of this material allows air circulation and provides a greater thermal comfort, while it grants protection from rain)

Vila Nova Parnaíba is the name of a residential area located in the south of the city Teresina, close to “downtown”. The irregular layout of Vila disconnects it from its surrounding which is an urbanized and consolidated area.

This discontinuity can especially be seen in the natural elements like the lagoons and flooded areas in the center of the location in which the population acquired their parcels in an unorganized form and constructed their homes in a way that serves them best.

The problems of this space are based on the missing of an infrastructure, for example the absence of public urban facilities, the position of housings in flood endangered zones, the structure of the sanitary system and the illumination. Moreover there exist social problems like unemployment and violence.

The goal of the project is to find the positive elements and requalify it to an urban sustainable area which priorifies the quality of the life of the local society.

In the gardens of Dirceu we find a mix of rural and urban. The city is splintered by the green line of high voltage which is paradoxically already used in a sustainable way. This can be reformulated to increase the possibilities of the people that live in the space.

It was noticed that the existing urban design is insufficient and doesn’t potentiate the already undertaken activities, such as the production and the direct sell of vegetables and fruits, as well as activities like running, walking and recreation. The materials of floors, walls and fences that protect the gardens are damaged and the lighting and street furniture are deficient throughout the route. The basic infrastructure is quite outdated and often nonexistent.

Due to the location of the gardens under the high voltage lines we didn’t use materials such as steel or metal that are potentially conductors. We took the durability and cost in consideration to enable a condition of porosity of the land in the different existing levels of organization.

The goals of the project are to create a new landscape in which big varieties along the sidewalk and new relations between buildings and gardens are established. Finally the reformulation of the landscape together with the expansion of activities will lead to constitute a more vivid urban context.
