In what ways does your film use, develop orchallenge forms or conventions of real

media products?♥ As a group we researched the conventions of a chick flick to gain a better idea of

what should be included in our opening credits. Our final idea was to have a photoalbum of three best friends which would include two pictures on each page, thecamera would zoom into one photo, bringing the audience into the scene, and thencome out again to another picture. Each scene would be different. The differentscenes would be a home video, the girls with their boyfriends and the girls shopping. Therefore each scene included a different convention.

During our research we discovered that the main conventions of a chick flick weregirlie fun, girl meets boy, friendship problems etc. Our storyline of our film in brief isthat three best friends meet again after years of not speaking and decide to look at aphoto album/scrap book that they made and reminisce together. They would thenface many more problems to overcome together throughout the film.

♥ As a group we looked closely at the film ‘Mean Girls’ as this is a great example thatfollows the conventions of a chick flick. Therefore we researched ‘Mark Waters’(director of mean girls) to imitate. We were inspired by ‘Alfred Hitchcock’ as we were

amazed by the amount of planning that he put into his films, this gave us an idea of the depth of thought and work we had to put into our planning.♥ Chick flicks always contain music so therefore for our opening credits we decided to

have no dialogue and play Jessica Simpson- with you throughout our opening credits.

How does your film represent particularsocial groups?

♥ Our opening credits represents the characters as ‘girly girls’ in a teenage socialgroup. By researching in to the stereotypes of chick flicks we created our charactersas true friends and true ‘girly girls’ who love makeup, shopping etc.

♥ During our research we discovered that many stereotypes of teenage girls are thatthey are bitchy, rude, male attention obsessed, immature etc.

♥ Our opening credits convey many of the conventions and stereotypes that are

portrayed of young teenage girls♥ In our opening credits we have scenes of the girls doing their make up. Straightening

their hair, shopping and just having fun together. By sticking to the stereotypes andconventions we were able to make our opening credits seem more realistic andbelievable to our audience. Therefore overall I think our opening credits representsand sticks to the stereotypes of the teenage girl social group.

What kind of media institution mightdistribute your film and why?

♥ Our opening credits does not contain anything that is not suitable for childrenyounger than 12, therefore we gave our film a certificate of a 12. Our targetaudience is teenagers, and as our questionnaire results proved they were the mainviewers of the genre of ‘chick flick’ we aimed our film specifically to teenagers.

♥ By using teenagers in our opening credits so viewers can relate more to thecharacters.

♥ There are many film companies out there which all distribute different genres of films, some companies sticking to certain genres more than others. Some of themost well known media institutions are: century fox, Miramax, paramount, DisneyPixar etc…

♥ By researching in to which genres many media institutions distribute I found thatparamount was the most likely to distribute a ‘chick flick’. They have distributed,‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’, ‘what women want’, etc. Therefore we decided as a groupthat paramount would be the best media institution to distribute our film as theyhave distributed the most ‘chick flick’ films.

Who would be your audience for your mediaproduct?

♥ The audience for our product would be more suited for Teenage femalesbetween the ages of 12 and 17. As our questionnaire results proved thatteenagers were the main viewers of a chick flick film.

♥ As our film is a chick flick this genre is more appealing to females andwithin the age groups of 12 to 17 as it is not a serious chick flick as it

involves young friendship issues therefore older woman may not be asinterested in it.

♥ Our opening credits do not contain anything that is unsuitable for childrenover twelve therefore we have given our film a certificate of 12.

How did you attract/address your audience?

♥ By starting our opening credits with an argument between friends, the audience isautomatically engaged and want to find out more about why the three girls arearguing. As out characters are teenagers as well and our aimed audience isteenagers, they can relate to the problems going on in the film and compare them totheir own friendship problems .

♥ Teenagers always experience friendship problems therefore the audience will alwaysin some way or another relate to our film.

♥ Our film is also quite modern. Using technology like mobile phones etc and also byhaving no dialogue in the opening credits and just a well known song people are alsodrawn into the film.

♥ Our title: ‘if someone said three years from now…’is a cliff-hanger, therefore the titlealso makes people interested and intrigued to find out more, as the title doesn’t giveanything away.

What have you learnt about thetechnologies from the process of

constructing your film.♥ We have learnt all the technical skill of using the camera to film our opening credits,

the 360 rule. We also have learnt how to edit our films using apple Macs and addingdifferent techniques to make our film effective.

♥ I learnt how to use different transitions to make a film look better, add special effects.♥ I had not ever film something as long as our opening credits and I had never used a

tripod. After filming and by using the tripod etc, I believe that I do understand how todo different camera shot s, angles and different movements.

♥ After uploading our film we needed to add different transitions to make our film morerealistic we used: fade in/out, making certain clips longer so the audience can viewthem better (i.e.: the mobile phone text message scene.) also just making the filmflow instead of jumping from scene to scene.

Looking back at your preliminary task, whatdo you feel you have learnt in the

progression from it to the full product?♥ Our preliminary task really gave us the idea of the 180 rule and how to use it. By not

crossing the line so the audience to not see characters moving from different sides of the screen and therefore making it seem unrealistic.

♥ It also gave us the idea and knowledge of how to use shot reverse shot. It helped usdecide when it was best o use certain camera techniques.

♥ By doing the preliminary task we were able to experience using the camera andtripod and get more accustomed to using it which therefore helped us when we filmedour opening credits

♥ I have realised how much time effort and planning need to go into producing everysingle shot, how that nothing is put in the scene accidently and that it is all there for a reason, also how you portray your characters can change the way the audience seethe film completely and the way they are represented.
