FORTH SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH
SPIRITUAL VITAMIN FOR THE MONTH:
‘Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good,
He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has
not seen God. ’ 3 John 11.
OUT OF MY BONDAGE 1. Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light, Jesus, I come to Thee; Out of my sickness into Thy health, Out of my want and into Thy wealth, Out of my sin and into Thyself Jesus, I come to Thee
2. Out of my shameful failure and loss,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into the glorious gain of Thy cross, Jesus, I come to Thee Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm, Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm, Out of distress to jubilant psalm Jesus, I come to Thee
3. Out of unrest and arrogant pride,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into Thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to Thee Out of myself to dwell in Thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward for eye on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to Thee.
4. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb,
Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into the joy and light of Thy home, Jesus, I come to Thee; Out of the depths of ruin untold, Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold, Ever Thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to Thee.
(HYMN FOR THE YEAR)
JESUS, MY STRENGHT, MY HOPE 1. Jesus, my strength my Hope,
On Thee I cast my care
With humble confidence look up,
And know Thou hearest prayer.
Give me on Thee to wait Till I can all things do;-
Almighty to renew.
2. I want a godly fear,
A quick, discerning eye,
That looks to Thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly:
A spirit still prepared, And armed with jealous care,
For ever standing on its guard,
And watching unto prayer.
3. I want a heart to pray,
To pray and never cease,
Never to murmur at Thy stay, Or wish my sufferings less:
This blessing, above all,
Always to pray, I want,
Out of the deep on Thee to call,
And never, never faint.
4. I rest upon thy Word,
Thy promise is for me: My succour and salvation. LORD,
Shall surely come from Thee.
But let me still abide,
Nor from my hope remove
Till Thou my patient spirit guide
Into Thy perfect love. Amen
I GAVE MY LIFE FOR THEE. 1. I gave My life for thee,
My precious blood I shed,
That thou might'st ransomed be
And quickened from the dead.
I gave My life for thee;
What hast thou given for Me?
2. I spent long years for thee
In weariness and woe
That an eternity
Of joy thou mightest know.
I spent long years for thee;
Hast thou spent one for Me?
3. My Father's home of light, My rainbow-circled throne,
I left for earthly night,
For wanderings sad and lone.
I left it all for thee;
Hast thou left aught for Me?
4. I suffered much for thee, More than My tongue may tell,
Of bitterest agony,
To rescue thee from hell.
I suffered much for thee;
What canst thou bear for Me?
5. And I have brought to thee
Down from My home above Salvation full and free,
My pardon and My love.
Great gifts I brought to thee;
What hast thou brought to Me?
6. Oh, let thy life be given,
Thy years for Me be spent,
World's fetters all be riven, And joy with suffering blent!
I gave Myself for thee:
Give thou thyself to Me.
BIBLE STUDY
9.00A.M. - 9.45 A.M.
INTRODUCTION: Without question, one of the most remarkable Christian doctrines is that
Jesus Christ himself through the Holy Spirit will actually enter a heart,
settle down and be at home here. He said to his disciples, “If anyone loves
me, he will obey my teaching, my Father will love him, and we will come
to him and make our home with him” (John 14:23). It is interesting that
Jesus uses a similar concept here (home) that he uses earlier in John 14: “I
am going there to prepare a place for you… that you also may be where I
am” (vv 2-3). He was promising that just as he was going to heaven to
prepare a place for them and would one day welcome then there, so it
would be possible for them to prepare a place for him in their hearts now.
He would come and make his home with then right here.
This was beyond their comprehension. How could it be? Then came
Pentecost. The Spirit of the living Christ was given to the church, and they
experienced what he had foretold. The body of the believer had become the
temple of the living God and the human heart the home of Jesus Christ.
Thirty minutes after Pentecost the disciples knew more about Jesus than
they had known in the previous three years.
I will never forget the evening I invited him into my heart. What an
entrance he made! It was not a spectacular, emotional thing, but very real,
occurring at the center of my soul. He came into the darkness of my heart
and turned on the light. He built a fire in the cold hearth and banished the
chill. He started music where there had been stillness and harmony where
there had been discord. He filled the emptiness with his own loving
fellowship. I have never regretted opening the door to Christ, and I never
will.
After Christ entered my heart, in the joy of that new found relationship I
said to him, “Lord, I want this heart of mine to be yours. I want you to
settle down here and be fully at home. I want you to use it as your own. Let
me show you around and point out some of the features of the home so that
you will be more comfortable. I want you to enjoy our time together.” He
was glad to come and seemed delighted to be given a place in my ordinary
little heart. The following Bible studies reflect the journey we went on
together.
THEME: Total Commitment.
TOPIC: The Living Room.
TEXTS: 1 John 1:1-7
AIMS: i) To decide definitely that you want to meet the Lord
regularly in your living room,
ii) To think of ways to eliminate or ignore the
distractions that keep you from that appointment.
Study Three: We moved next into the living room. This was a quiet,
comfortable room with a warm atmosphere. I liked it. He also seemed
pleased with it. He said, “Let’s come here often. It’s secluded and
quiet, and we can have good talks and fellowship together.” So, morning
after morning, I would go downstairs to the living room. He would take
a book of the Bible from the bookcase and open it, and we would read it
together. Through the Bible and his Holy Spirit, he would talk to me. In
prayer I would respond. Those times were wonderful. However, under
the pressure of many responsibilities, little by little this time began to be
shortened. Somehow I assumed I was just too busy to give special,
regular time to be with Christ. This was not a deliberate decision, you
understand; it just seemed to happen that way. One morning, I recall
rushing down the steps in a hurry to be on my way to an important
appointment. As I passed the living room, the door was open.
THIS SUNDAY LEADER – THE VICAR
Glancing in, I saw a fire in the fireplace and Jesus sitting There.
Suddenly, in dismay, it came to me. “He is my guest. I invited Him into
my heart! He has come as my Saviour and Friend to live with me. Yet
here I am neglecting him.”
I stopped, turned and hesitantly went in. With downcast glance I said,
“Master, I’m sorry! Have you been here every morning?”
“Yes,” he said. “The trouble is that you have been thinking of the quiet
time, of Bible study and prayer, as a means for your own spiritual
growth. This is true, but you have forgotten that this time means
something to me also. At a great cost I have redeemed you. I value
your fellowship. Whether or not you want to be with me, remember I
want to be with you.”
Open
- When have you most cherished your times talking with
Jesus in the living room of your heart?
- What distractions typically prevent you from developing
your relationship with the Lord?
Study
Read 1 John 1:1-7
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we
have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have
touched – this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life
appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the
eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We
proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have
fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his
Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to make our joy complete.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to your God is
light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship
with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with
one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
1. What words and phrases in verse 1 tell you about the kind of intimacy
John has developed with Jesus?
2. From these verses and your knowledge of John as “the disciple whom
Jesus loved” (John 21:20), what insights do you gain about how John
developed such intimacy?
3. How are darkness and light contrasted in verses 5-7?
4. How do we know that John wished to communicate about a Person
whom we can know, rather than a good religious feeling?
5. In your quest for close fellowship with the Lord, what barriers have you
encountered?
6. What are the benefits of spending time and energy developing a close
relationship with Christ?
7. What role does our individual fellowship with Christ play in the life of
the Church as a whole?
Commit
- When your regular time of fellowship with the Lord becomes
d ry and unappealing, what are the reasons?
- What would help you to make your time with the Lord rich
and full again?

THE HUMILITY OF CHRIST
“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name.” Phil. 2:8-9. Jesus Christ humility and humiliation won the victory over sin, death, and the devil for us and whose exaltation proved the victory. But we do need a quick reminder of what that humiliation was. When we speak of humiliation in the Catechism, we aren’t talking about the blush of the cheeks or being embarrassed. No, Jesus’ humiliation was the setting aside of his full power and glory to accomplish his work as the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world. He couldn’t walk around shining brighter than the sun as he did during the Transfiguration. The steps of Jesus’ humiliation are recounted in the second article of the Apostle’s Creed. There we confess that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and was buried. Why would Jesus display such humility? He was the King of kings and Lord of lords! He was there with the Father and Spirit creating the world. Why would he then be a King lowly and riding on a donkey? Why would he do this especially when it would be so misunderstood by so many people? The answer is simple: God sent his Son not only to save us, but also to serve us. That is why he hid his full glory. Whatever needed to be done to save us, Jesus was willing to do. It is that servant attitude Paul refers to in Phi. 2:5-11.
Jesus was in nature true God, yet mankind could not save itself, so God himself solved the problem. Jesus’ love for us is so great he did not grip onto his deity in heaven alone. He made himself nothing. If he stayed in heaven, how would our salvation be accomplished? He became a servant and became fully human in our place. The Holy Week, as we know ends at Calvary. Jesus Christ humbled himself to such a degrading death, that the innocent died for the guilty of all. What should be our response to this? Apostle Paul encourages us to put into practice the humility of Jesus Christ and not his sacrifice on the cross. He wants us to set aside the desire for earthly rewards and glory; that is not to be our goal in life. Therefore, as we begin this Holy Week journey to the cross, may our faith be in Jesus alone, God who became man to accomplish the Father’s plan of salvation. May we not discredit him because he “doesn’t talk himself up” the way we may expect. Rather, may we honor him as our Savior, through whom we have eternal life.
