GOOD NEWS

Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15 I 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, M2 lLuke 13:1-9

When our daughter was born, my husband and I bought a tree at an end-of-season sale to plant in her honor. lt sat all winter looking quite dead. As warmertemperatures arrived in the spring, I anxiously watched for signs of budding, quite aware of the one year guarantee on my sales receipt-if the tree didn'tblossom within the first year, I could uproot it and return it for a full refund.

l'm not sure how l'd have responded if a gardener had begged me to keep thetree past the deadline. l'd lose my chance at a refund, and what would be thelikelihood of the tree really "coming back to life" if it hadn't done anythingwithin the first year? lt would take a lot of trust in the gardener and in the tree'spotentialto give it another chance.

ln today's Gospel, God is both owner and gardener.

There comes a time for God's judgment on us, but God is also the one whocontinually offers graced opportunities to repent and change our behaviors. We

also hear Jesus speak of the untimely deaths of innocent people in his

community.

These stories remind us that our lives are fragile and we don't know when ourtime on earth will end. God expects us to always be prepared to meet him and

his judgment.

Are we taking advantage of this Lent as a grace-filled opportunity to root outsin and prune our lives of unfruitfultendencies?

God expects much, and God graces us with much-it's up to us to do thegrowing. Janel Esker [email protected]

ln the past churches were open 2417, but because of short staffing and security we are

not able to keep our doors open so that all may drop in to pay a visit to the Blessed

Sacrament at any time. Each month we hold Eucharistic Adoration in the chapel. Allare welcome to spend an hour in prayer. Let us pray for our Holy Mother Church in

this season of Sede Vacante and for the successor to Pope Benedict XVl.

PAINTING UPDATE

Please pray for the workers as they begin the work on the inside of the sanctuary in

the final phase of the painting. Repair to the cement and sealing around thewindows was not covered in the original cost of the project ($r493.r7), but much

needed to preserve the integrity of the building-and now the floor in the Hall

doesn' leak.

d e ar PAD Rf,

Last year you answered a lener about people wln spend welfare

drccks on nonnecasitics. Taxpayers giue tltem moneyfor one thi,ng

but tfuy use itfor something else. Yw diiln't caLl that stealing, butLsn't it?

Yes. That's illegal, and it's stealing to use welfare checks

in illegal ways. That's cut and dried. For example, it'sillegal to trade food stamps for cash, and it's illegal for astore to Iet people use food stamps for cigarettes or liquor.Anyone who does any of those things is stealing, andstealing is a sin. But other aspects of this issue aren't so

cut and dried. If we decide someone who is legally onwelfare shouldn't be eligible, or that someone shouldn'tIegally use food stamps to buy two-percent milk because

we don't think two-percent milk is a necessity, we'rejudging. Jesus tells us to be very careful about that.

Ifyou think something shouldn't be legal, workwith yourlegislator to get the law changed. But the people wholegally do those things are not stealing or sinning.

And don't forget: Misuse of welfare funds isn't the onlyway people steal from taxpayers. Taxpayers who lie aboutor "e><agerate" business expenses, dependents, income, orother matters to save money on taxes or get a biggerbonus are also stealing, and again, that's a sin.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

As an elderly peasant once explained when St. John Vianney asked him how

he prayed: "l look at the good Go4 and the good God look at me."

Adorotion is the first attitude of man acknowledging that he is a crea-

ture before his Creator. lt exalts the greatness of the Lord who made

us and the almighty power of the Savior who sets us free from evil.

Adoration is homage of the spirit to the "King of Glory" respectful si-

lence in the presence of the "ever greater" God. Adoration of thethrice-holy and sovereign God of love blends with humility and gives

assurance to our supplications.
