RFID vs. Barcode
Parameters RFID 2D Barcode
Line of sight No line of sight required Line of sight required
Reading range Up to 300m Up to 4m
ID capabilities Uniquely identifies items, cases,
pallets
Identifies only item category
Item orientation to reader Not important Require proper orientation
Functionality if damaged Impossible Possible
Harsh environment resistance Can be used Weak
Interference with magnetic fields Functionality is affected by
magnetic fields
Not affected
Size Medium, small, tiny Medium, small
Cost More expensive tags: $0.1
*additional cost to attach
Cheaper to produce : $0.001
Attachment Currently requires 2 steps: tag
creation and tag attachment
Single step : can be easily printed
on boxes during manufacturing
Security, counterfeiting High security, hard/almost
impossible to clone
Easy for copying/counterfeiting
DPM(Direct Part Marking) Barcode

What is a DPM Barcode?
DPM
– Direct Part Marking
– DPM is the process of marking a permanent 2D barcode onto the part’s
surface in order to provide full traceability throughout the lifecycle.
– DPM makes it practical to identify almost anything, including small,
hard-to-label items.
– With DPM, expensive and/or mission critical parts and components can
be encoded with their serial number, lot code, configuration information
or other essential data.
The Advantage of DPM
Error proofing
Part traceability
Part authenticity
Supply chain management
Increased productivity
Many industries are now implementing parts tracking using DPM ID !!
4 Marking Methods
Laser Marking Ink Jet Marking
Dot Peen Marking Electro-Chemical Etch Marking
DPM Applications
Semiconductor -Wafer
Aircraft – Turbine blade Pharmaceutical - Vials
Automotive –
Engine components
Electronics - PCB Cell phone –
Camera Module
DPM Applications
Package Assembly – Micro PCB Medical – Surgical instruments
DoD – Machine, ID Optics – Lens tray
DPM Objects
Laser Mark on Exhaust Dot Peen Mark on Plastic
Dot Peen Mark on Casting
Laser Mark on Rubber
Laser Bonding on Glass Laser Mark on Wheel
One can mark almost anything !!
Challenges
Challenging points in DPM
– DPM often have very little contrast, because they are stamped or etched directly onto the metal and may be covered by grease, dirt or wear marks.
– A light source from the reader can create shadows, or may make the symbol too bright to read if the surface is reflective.
– Dot-peen type DPM(round-type) is different from normal paper barcode(square-type). It requires special image signal processing.
– DPMs on curved surface.
Good DPM barcode reader
– The reader has to be adaptive for a range of conditions.

Operating Modes
Continuous Mode
– Repetitively acquires barcode images as fast as possible regardless of
trigger source.
– If one defines code depth FIFO, one can avoid reading the same code.
OneShot mode
– Acquire single image
after receiving trigger.
Burst mode
– Acquire several images firstly and
decode after all images are ready.
– Good for recognizing barcodes on
moving object.
External trigger
RS232
