General Kepner writes: "Alaska is a particularly interesting place. If onelikes to fish or hunt, it's grand. In the ten months that I have been here,(this letter was written last June) I have gone fishing many times and caughtmany huge trout. Huge for me, that is--about four to six pounds. I got mylimit all too soon. The ducks and geese form clouds in the sky and it is soeasy to have a grand day hunting. The only trouble is that all limits are toosmall. I shot a moose weighing about twelve hundred pounds last Fall. Duringthe winter I was forced down on the Arctic Ice Cap while I was hunting polarbears. I slept the night in a temperature of thirty-five degrees below zerowith a twenty-five knot wind blowing. It wasn't too bad. I was in a nice warmsleeping bag and had an Eskimo who helped me build an igloo out on the ice. Idid get a polar bear about nine feet long--a beautiful specimen. Last week Igot a ten foot, four inch Kodiak bear. Believe me, those bears are full ofdynamite and vitality. It is a good feeling to see them go down when you shootas they sometimes take after the hunter when only hurt. Since I am back, thatis proof that the bear went down--all ten feet of him" John Karoly insistsall the "pickhandlers" MUST show up in Chicago in October to give the nativeChicagoans something to talk about--and that he promises AFTER the two politicalconventions this summer which should have them talked out

You will be interested to know that Head-quarters, 2nd Air Division is now located at Lands-berg, Germany and Col. Hubert Zempke is Chiefof Staff. (N. Y. Herald-Tribune May 27th) . . . .Air Force TiM2S on April 28th had a picture ofBrig. Gen. Bob Terrill instructing his wife on thenew Golf Driving Range at Castle AFB, Merced,Calif. Then on June 9th, the Times states thatGen. Terrill has been assigned command of theFar Eastern Air Forces Bomber Command . . .Joe Whittaker is now with American Cyanamide,20 Wacker Drive, Chicago. Major John Mosscrop

now at Hq., USAFE . . . Val and Tom Conroyput together a little part of 2AD folks in Washing-ton not long ago. Tony Shtogren, Joe Flaherty, and Ben Walsh and their wives were all presentas well as Fritzie. All are prospering and havecharming wives and lovely children (except Fritzie,of course, and she is just charming and prospering). But they will all be in New York in October . . .Fred Bunch (315th Sig Co) and wife Margaret, formerly of Norwich, are now living in Norfolk,Virginia. Fred is working at the Amphibious Baseat Little Creek . . . Al Detweiler is now with Con-tinental Furniture Company in High Point, NorthCarolina.

Jim Reeves is very happy in the furniture busi-ness in Moultrie, Georgia. He is active in the AirReserve and recently was promoted to 1st Lt. . . .A nice letter was received from Mrs. Hendry inNyasaland. She and Pam are making a flyingtrip to England in September for a months stay.Pam was Africa's first woman air station com-mander—stationed at Lilongwe. She is now train-ing to be a flight assistant.

A long letter has been received from Lt. Col.Ed Reed (Photo Lab) who is on TDY in Englandand has visited Ket Hall. Following is a partof his letter ". . . I am at present on TDY to theUK and took off on the first available weekendto visit Norwich and the Hall. I spent Saturdayand Sunday, May 12th and 13th looking over thesite of our previous Headquarters. The Brown,Clark, Evans and Artherton Families all receivedme with open arms, so to speak, and proceededto ask questions regarding the whereabouts ofpractically any and all enlisted men and officersever stationed there. Many of the names men-tioned I had n?ver known, others I had to admitI did not know their whereabouts. Previous cor-

respondents with these families have evidentlybeen a little lax in replying to letters or havejust neglected to carry on the contact. Thesepeople miss the written word from their friendsin America. I would urge anyone who knew anyor all of the above mentioned families to writethem. They are hungry for news of their boys .

I attended Chapel services on Sunday at 1100

hours. Mr. Mills, the vicar, is still in charge ofth, local flock. The Hall is in the throes of modi-

fication under the new ownership of the Duke ofWestiminster and shortly is to be a school for boys. All hutments adjacent to the Hall have been re-moved and the grounds restored. This includesall huts used by A-4, Photo, Sqdn. CO, etc., andall quarters for enlisted men in the wooded area. The only hut remaining is the one previously usedby the Air Ministry as a branch Clerk of the Worksheadquarters.

The long string of metal huts formerly occupied

by the Junior officers has been dismantled and

disposed of. The huts occupied by the senior offi-

cers are still in place and are being utilized as

low rental housing. The officers mess hall and

club are home to several English families as is

also the former Red Cross hut. Generally, a sort

of depressing feeling seemed to pervade the entirearea as I viewed only the skeleton of what wasonce a strong link in an important mission of the

USAF. However, it was wonderful to have the old

family heads come to me from their gardens, speak to me by name, and stand and discuss theold days. I'm glad I went back, if only to refreshmy memory and to be able to walk over the oldbicycle paths which we all tried to navigate, with-out lights, during tlF• wee hours. I'd seriouslyrecommend the trip to anyone who is able tomake it. Don't hesitate! The same hearty Eng-lish hospitality you knew so well while you werehere, is awaiting each and every one of you. Againlet me press one point, write your Ketteringhamfriends, they do want to hear from you." s/ EdwinReed, Lt. Col., 7th Air Division, APO 125, c/o PM,

N. Y. Many thanks to Ed for this interesting

letter.

Jo Affronte (formerly Mrs. Mark Shoop) hasresumed her miaden name and is now working at

head of the Employee Relations Division at the

U. S. Naval Base at Long Beach, although she

maintains that she is still loyal to the Air Force

Stationed in Wiesbaden she has flownon TDY to Norway, England, Italy, Greece, Tri-poli, Egypt, Cyprus, and France. It must indeed bemost interesting and Carol says she likes it fine.. . . Mark Eaton tells us he is now on active dutyand stationed at Muroc, Calif.

Colonel Walter G. W. Clatanoff is stationed atthe Pentagon . . .
