Welcome Now in its thirty-third year, the Presteigne Festival celebrates music, musicians and very much more with a wide variety of vibrant arts events. This year we feature Nordic music, marking the 150th anniversaries of Sibelius and Nielsen whilst also embracing the contemporary voices of Einojuhani Rautavaara and Pēteris Vasks.

The Festival has an enviable reputation for the commissioning of new music and 2015 is especially exciting with important pieces from Charlotte Bray, David Knotts, David Matthews, Cecilia McDowall, Joseph Phibbs, Michael Small and composer-in-residence, Matthew Taylor.

In addition, our complementary programme of exhibitions and talks – on a wide range of subjects with local and broader interest – includes Welsh painters, medieval archaeology and architecture, and an award-winning one-man show.

The artist roster brims over with extraordinary talent; Presteigne favourites return (including Tom Poster, Gillian Keith and the Navarra Quartet), whilst other musicians make their first pilgrimage to the Welsh Marches – among them outstanding British violinist Fenella Humphreys and piano-duettists Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa.

With such remarkable ingredients – tremendous music, superb artists and speakers, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country – who could fail to enjoy this wonderful Festival? We look forward to welcoming you.

george Vass, artistic director

RhagaiR A hithau bellach yn ei thrydedd flwyddyn ar ddeg ar hugain, mae Gŵyl Llanandras yn dathlu cerddoriaeth, cerddorion a llawer iawn mwy, gydag amrywiaeth eang o ddigwyddiadau celf bywiog. Eleni rydym yn cynnig cerddoriaeth Lychlynnaidd, i nodi canrif a hanner ers genedigaeth Sibelius a Nielsen a hefyd i gynnwys cerddoriaeth gyfoes Einojuhani Rautavaara a Pēteris Vasks.

Mae gan yr Ŵyl hanes heb ei ail o gomisiynu cerddoriaeth newydd, ac mae 2015 yn gyffrous dros ben gyda darnau pwysig gan Charlotte Bray, David Knotts, David Matthews, Cecilia McDowall, Joseph Phibbs, Michael Small a’r cyfansoddwr preswyl, Matthew Taylor.

Yn ogystal â hyn, mae ein rhaglen o arddangosfeydd ac anerchiadau – ar amrywiaeth o bynciau o ddiddordeb lleol neu ehangach – yn cynnwys arlunwyr Cymreig, archeoleg a phensaernïaeth yr oesoedd canol, a sioe un-dyn arobryn.

Mae’r rhestr artistiaid yn gyforiog o ddoniau nodedig: mae rhai o ffefrynnau Llanandras yn ymweld â’r Ŵyl unwaith eto (gan gynnwys Tom Poster, Gillian Keith a Phedwarawd Navarra), wrth i gerddorion eraill fentro ar eu pererindod gyntaf i Gymru a’r Gororau – yn eu plith, y feiolinydd Prydeinig amlwg Fenella Humphreys a’r deuawdwyr piano Joseph Tong a Waka Hasegawa.

Gyda chynhwysion mor hynod â hyn – cerddoriaeth ragorol, artistiaid a siaradwyr gwych, golygfeydd sydd gyda’r harddaf yn y wlad – pwy allai fethu â mwynhau’r Ŵyl ryfeddol hon? Edrychwn ymlaen at eich croesawu chi yma.

Nova Music Opera brings together a pair of contemporary chamber operas by Charlotte Bray and Thomas Hyde about misunderstood characters from modern British history. In the sixtieth anniversary year of her controversial execution, the end of Ruth Ellis’ life is examined in Charlotte Bray’s work Entanglement.

Thomas Hyde’s That Man Stephen Ward, premiered to wonderful reviews in 2008, charts the demise of one of the more tragic characters involved in the Profumo scandal of the early 1960s.

Chamber Opera Double Bill

EntanglementCharlotte Bray composer ∙ Amy Rosenthal librettist Welsh premiere of a joint Nova Music/Presteigne Festival commission in association with the Cheltenham Music Festival

In the summer of 1953, nightclub manageress Ruth Ellis meets two men with whose lives her own will be fatally intertwined. As lonely businessman Desmond Cussen loses his heart to her, so Ruth loses hers to troubled racing-car driver David Blakely, with whom she spirals into a violent and obsessive co-dependence. Set amidst the grubby glamour of London in the 1950s, Entanglement charts two years in the lives of the trio as they are driven towards their tragic destiny – and the act that will see Ruth Ellis defined forever as the last woman to be hanged in Britain.

Ruth Kirsty Hopkins Desmond Howard Quilla Croft David Greg Tassell Richard Williams director ∙ George Vass conductorNova Music Ensemble

That Man Stephen WardThomas Hyde composer ∙ David Norris librettistWelsh premiere

Dr Stephen Ward, society osteopath, man-about-town and (in his own mind at least) Cold War peace negotiator, is arrested for living off immoral earnings. Will his many friends and famous clients stand by him in his hour of need?

With its mixture of cabaret songs, recitatives and arias, this operatic entertainment charts the fall of the key figure in the famous Profumo scandal with a suitably British mixture of tragedy, irony and comedy.

Bach to the Future II – by candlelight

The two great Nordic symphonists Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen both discovered important musical truths in nature. Each found inspiration in folksong, but where Sibelius also drew on close observation of the elements, Nielsen’s ideas often came from watching, and listening to people. In this illustrated talk, Stephen Johnson traces these two composers’ seemingly similar, yet in reality very different courses of development: Nielsen ever expanding, Sibelius concentrating his focus ever more narrowly. As with Mozart and Haydn, or Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, these two Titans complement each other fascinatingly, and a truly balanced, sane viewpoint requires that we heed them both.
