FRONT.design is a wholly Australian-owned event, and the FRONT.design File event guide is designed and published in Australia. FRONT.design is part of Indesign Media Asia Pacific.
At the core of any successful commercial design venture is the relationships you have and the expertise you bring to it. FRONT.design adds a critical string to your bow, giving you with the innovations, network and actionable knowledge that’s vital to your business.
When we launched FRONT.design in 2018 it was with the vision to break away from the traditional trade fair format. Drawing on our 20 years of experience in commercial design we wanted an event that could achieve the things that suppliers and specifiers need most. FRONT.design creates a platform for finding solutions that emphasise innovation as much as they do aesthetics; we give you connectivity across the entire commercial ecosystem; and provide actionable knowledge to bind that all together.
In 2019 we bring you FRONT.design from an all new location in Barangaroo. Working with our Venue Partner, International Towers, we are filling two floors of Tower Three, a precinct that sees tens-of-thousands of people pass through it every day. It’s a location that encapsulates the very best in architecture, interiors, sustainability, real estate and end-user experience.
We thank our 2019 FRONT.design Partners, Exhibitors and Ambassadors who have helped us build what is going to be a really exciting, dynamic and game-changing event; an event that brings together all facets of the commercial ecosystem to facilitate innovation, connection and new design intelligence. +

THE POWER OF CHANGE AND DIVERSITY
Liam Timms Fund ManagerInternational Towers
The ecosystem around commercial design is ever-changing. New players bring greater diversity and opportunity but also herald shifts in power. Market forces both local and global demand flexibility from businesses and an open-minded outlook from the leaders within. FRONT.design acknowledges the complexities of commercial design today. At the core of the FRONT.design program is a vision to create great connectivity across all levels of industry. Through its format and location at International Towers in Barangaroo, FRONT.design provides fertile grounds for collaboration and creative engagement. The possibility for breeding new ideas, and pioneering innovative outcomes and game-changing solutions are there for the taking. For Liam Timms, fund manager at International Towers and an Ambassador to FRONT.design, the synergies between FRONT.design’s mission and its location within International Towers’ Tower Three couldn’t be better matched. International Towers has just been recognised as one of Australia’s and New Zealand’s Most Innovative Companies at the 2019 AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies awards. Here, Liam shares his thoughts on the power of diversity and change as an enabler of collaboration and positive disruption.
Q: Tell us about why International Towers is excited to be Venue Partner for FRONT.design? FRONT.design’s mission is very representative of our own ambitions. We look to align with organisations that really want to be part of future thought leadership and innovation – or curiosity as we call it. [It] represents the next level of thinking – whether it’s product or a space. It offers a great opportunity for connecting our community with the FRONT.design community to share learnings, and take away learnings. Q: International Towers’ vision is to enable game-changing, like-minded organisations and industry disruptors. How do you facilitate change and positive disruption? I think change is embedded in everything we do and change comes from continually experimenting. But change doesn’t come easily, you need to be on the journey. And what you find on the journey is that you are continually re-pivoting – that’s the way change comes about.
Opportunities are going to come when you are on those journeys. Opportunities don’t come
when you’re sitting back waiting for somebody to deliver you the perfect box with a bow around it to bop into your business. It doesn’t work that way. You need to be participating in diverse fields because … most of the change you will learn will come from somewhere other than the area you specialise in. +
Hear from Liam and many other expert speakers at FRONT.design Forum, page 8-9.

In considering the state of workplace and education design, FRONT.design Ambassador Simone Oliver outlines the defining influences of our time, and the role of architect and designer within that. “The nature of work has radically changed,” says Simone Oliver, national sector leader – interior architecture at Architectus. “The rise of technology, automation, globalisation” – these are the big-picture forces driving change. On the ground, we see it play out through rapidly growing markets like the gig economy and co-working. This is influenced be a clashing of typologies in which seemingly disparate markets like education and even hospitality bring new depth to what was once a clearly delineated field of reference. The implications of a rising Millennial workforce has seen education and work come into closer proximity in what is coined ‘lifelong learning’ or ‘open loop learning’. “We are starting to see this paradigm shift between the transition of school leaders into the workforce,” comments Simone. This is where the ideal of ‘lifelong learning’ comes into play. “This idea that there are no longer separate activities that define different periods of our lives between learning and work.” The result is a new era of Millennial-age workers who are questioning the need for a traditional university degree, and looping in and out of the workforce to
complete their degrees as they choose.“This also leads into what we’re doing now with the uprising of [entrepreneurially-geared] co- working and precincts, or environments created around incubation,” Simone says. “So, to me, this is defining what I see as being the new workplace landscape. And within that there is a heap of design opportunity.” The onus is on designers, she says, to be of enquiring mind and maintain a strong research ethic; also important is “having a mindset around partnering with people that can help galvanise thinking around new work types”. It’s a lot of moving parts, and the future – as Simone says – remains disruptive and uncertain. It’s impossible to intuit where we will end up – short term or long term. One thing is for sure, though, the future of interior architecture is not one of surface results. It calls for deeper, more psychological consideration for how an environment can
emote, empower and help people engage in meaningful ways. + See Simone at FRONT.design Forum, moderating Positive collisions: what makes co-working tick? Proudly presented by Business Interiors, page 8.
