This week we waved goodbye to our Y6 children as they embarked on their residential visit to East Barnby. They have been having a marvellous time. They will re-join us tomorrow and I expect they will need a well earned rest over the weekend, as will the staff who accompanied them. I look forward to hearing all about their adventures. A huge thank you to Mrs Salisbury, Mr Marshall, Mrs Williams, Mrs Hannam, Mrs Nunns, Mrs Lang and Mr Latty for spending the last five days with the children and giving up their own personal time to supervise them. Residentials couldn’t take place without their generosity and commitment to the school.

On Monday I led a Child Protection assembly. The children were informed that I am the Designated Safeguarding Lead in school and Mrs Salisbury is the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead. We discussed who children could speak to if they had a worry or concern – any adult in school, a parent, grandparent or another adult they can trust. The children also identified that they could speak to a friend, a Peer Listener and our Learning Mentor – Laura Henry. We are very lucky as Laura has worked for Childline in the past and she shared some of her knowledge with the children and they learned the Childline number: 0800 1111.

I showed the children a game based website that I had seen Miss Matthews’ class playing last week that supports learning about being safe online, including from Cyberbullying. ‘Interland’ is a Google website page and is an interesting way for children to learn about staying safe online. Miss Matthews class thoroughly enjoyed playing it.

I also saw Mr Marshall’s class learning about keeping safe online last week and they were making posters linked to this. We now live in a society of advancing technology and we feel it is so important that children learn about safety linked to the internet and what to do if they encounter a concern or worry.

On Tuesday Y2 took part in a Life Long Ago workshop. They carried out fossil hunts for carnivores, herbivores and other life from long ago. They learned all about the dinosaurs and had lots of their questions answered. It was a super information packed visit and the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

CONGRATULATIONS - ACHIEVEMENT ASSEMBLY Congratulations to the children who were on the Sunshine Board last week: Emily, Oliver (SK/CN), Catrin, Thomas Y (AC). Congratulations to all the children who received certificates in last week’s assembly. CITIZENSHIP PROJECT - FUNDRAISING FOR CANCER RESEAR CH Last term some of Miss Matthews’ children took part in a citizenship project, following on from that on Monday 2nd October , Orla, Angharad, Olia and Sophie from Year 5 will be holding a jumble sale with books, teddies and lots more, to raise money for Cancer Research. The sale will take place straight after school in Miss Matthews' classroom or on the top playground if the weather is nice and everyone is invited to attend. As it is for charity, there will be no specific prices set . The girls are only asking for a sensible donation for items, meaning everyone has a chance to buy something, even if they can only contribute a little money. The girls have worked hard to organise this event for a very good cause, so please come along and show your support.

INDIVIDUAL CLASS PHOTOS On Thursday 5 October children will have their individual photographs taken. Please ensure your children have a jumper or cardigan with them. If you have a non-Rossett Acre school child and you would like them to have their photograph taken with their sibling, the photographer will be available from 8.15am in the Sports Hall (access from the front of the school building). PARENTS’ EVENING Parents’ Evening this term will be held on Tuesday October 17th and Thursday 19 October. Letters have been sent out with instructions of how to make an appointment online. If you have any problems booking your appointment, please speak to the school staff in the office who will be happy to help. The booking system goes live on Monday 2 October at 9am and appointments are booked on a first come, first served basis, so please ensure you book early. Thank you. NEW STARTERS SEPTEMBER 2018 We have two Open Days this year: Tuesday 17 October and Thursday 9 November 2017. Our most recent Forum was all about keeping children safe online, how we teach it in school and where parents can gain support to ensure children are safe online at home too. The feedback from this Forum was very positive – thank you to everyone who attended. This year we will be running our Parent Forums again and wondered if you had any suggestions about the themes you would like us to cover. It could be how we teach phonics, reading, writing or grammar in school, how we teach Mastery Maths, how we deliver a creative curriculum or something else. We are keen to hear your suggestions, so please do complete the slip at the bottom of this newsletter and return it to the School Office if you have an idea. Thank you.
