Nelson’s newest “high rise” will be up by Christmas, say contractors. The five storey Quest building on Collingwood St started in July and contractors Arrow International say they’re making good progress. Nel-son manager for Arrow, Steve Kelso, says they hope to have the building up by Christmas, with work then

starting on fitting out the building before it officially opens in May.The building will house serviced apartments operated by Quest, a na-tional chain.Steve says there’s been plenty of in-terest in the building from passersby and that all of the sub-contractors used have been local firms

in doing that,” says John. “I told him to send a full and frank proposal and I’ll take it to the district executive to discuss, but I haven’t seen that yet.”The Nelson Marlborough Fal-cons are a private team that play in the New Zealand Football-run ASB Youth League. They won the right to a youth league licence three years ago over Nelson Bays Football, which runs the game in Nelson on behalf of Christch-

urch-based Mainland Football, one of the country’s six federa-tions.This year, the Falcons have also been left without a major sponsor and New Zealand Football had talks with Aldo in Auckland last Thursday to discuss the $20,000 entry fee which hadn’t been paid.Aldo says a new major sponsor has been signed though, which will be announced in “five weeks”. The regular season ends on De-cember 21, eight weeks away.“We’re set to announce, in about

five weeks’ time, our sponsor for the rest of the season and for next season, which is fantastic,” says Aldo. “We’re just waiting for the new strips to arrive and then we’ll get their logo on it, and then we’ll be able to announce it.”He also said New Zealand Foot-ball were being “very patient” with the late entry fee and were “understanding”.He was bullish about the future of the Falcons, saying it was still his goal to have a men’s national

league side, but admitted that he was resigning from his role as chairman at the end of the season. That would leave a two-man board.Cam Mitchell of New Zea-

land Football says he was happy with the discussions with Aldo last week and that they have agreed to a payment plan for the team. He says the governance of the team will be reviewed at the end of the season. “As it sits, the Falcons are meeting the obliga-tions in terms of their licence and we think it’s positive that they’re looking at their govern-ance structure.”On the pitch, the Falcons are un-beaten, playing fantastic football and Aldo says that’s a huge suc-cess story. “On the field it’s been unreal stuff this season. It highlights the depth of football and is a slap in the face of all those people who didn’t back the team, didn’t think they’d do well.”

This year’s Nayland Primary School fundraising show is titled ‘Under the Big Top’, and is a take on a circus trav-elling to a small town and all the shenanigans that it brings. The cast of around 30 have been rehearsing the adults only show since February and also wrote, choreo-graphed and produced it. Made up of parents, teachers and members of the Board of Trustees, they lip sync, dance and humour their way through a cabaret style show, with a special guest appear-ance on stage by principal, Janice Gulbransen. The show, which features an array of costumes and

characters, is supported by a number of sponsors from lo-cal businesses. To date, past shows have raised around $100,000 for the building of the school’s new multi-pur-pose learning space with this year’s funds going towards

furniture and landscaping.Tables are set to seat 10 peo-ple and include a compli-mentary drink and a platter at the beginning of the show. The Nayland Primary School ‘Under the Big Top’ show will be held at Broadgreen Inter-

mediate School on Saturday, November 1, Friday, Novem-ber 7 and Saturday, Novem-ber 8, with doors opening at 7.15pm and show starting at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now from the Nayland Primary School office and cost $25.

Nelsonians do the ‘Nelson’

NOT A DUMP: A photo sent to the Weekly of rubbish dumped on the side of the road on the Whangamoas last week. If caught, rubbish dumpers can expect to be fined up to $400.

Today is 111 days until Nelson hosts its first Cricket World Cup game and to celebrate, Nelsonians will be doing the “Nelson”.The “Nelson” involves getting one or both feet off the ground to ward off bad luck on scores of 111.Some players believe bad things will happen on that score. It may be considered unlucky because the number resembles a wicket without bails. Standing or one leg, or if you’re sitting down, keeping both feet off the ground is supposed to prevent disaster until the score changes. So organisers of Nelson’s world cup games have decided to use the tradition to help build excitement. Today, the mayor will be doing the

“Nelson” at Civic House as will students from various local schools. There will be plenty of other opportunities for locals to take part in this odd tradition, not only at the games but all the other activities that are planned for the Festival of Cricket that will be surrounding the matches. The Festival of Cricket starts on February 14, when New Zealand and Sri Lanka play the opening game in Christchurch. It will include a giant Nelson 111 Street Party, featuring a market day, local wine, beer and food, and a big screen to watch the opening game. The first game to be played at Saxton Oval is between the West Indies and Ireland on March 5

Nelson’s kapahaka group are being put through their paces in an effort to get “haka fit” for the national kapahaka festival next year.Te Whatukura Kapahaka club has been doing fitness sessions with Greg Witika at Wairua Body Coaching Systems in Stoke. After a solid workout, Greg makes the group perform in the gym to get them used to performing with a high heart rate. And they hope it will help them during the com-petition in Christchurch in March.Awhina Kihi – a co-tutor and performer with the Te Whatukura Kapahaka club – came up with the idea, and says it is just the first step in a plan to use traditional movement and perform-ing arts to inspire and motive local Maori and Pacific Islanders to embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle.

“With over twenty years involvement with Kapa-haka, I have learnt it is the perfect vehicle for Māori and Pacific cultures to become involved in an active and healthy lifestyle,” she says.Greg says there is more to becoming haka fit than physical strength and stamina and he’s coaching the performers to utilise natural movement. “But we’re also talking about nutrition and belief in oneself, so that on the day the group can step out with confidence knowing they are going to give the very best they can.”After the work with the kapahaka group, Awhina’s vision for a community outreach pro-gramme is taking shape, with the successful completion of the first stage of a funding appli-cation with Te Pūtahitanga. If final funding is granted, they plan to take the programme to the wider community.

Matt Holmes has a lot of shoes, and not all of them are his. There’s Michael Johnson’s gold-medal-winning sprint shoe, light as a feather, signed by the man himself. There’s Roger Federer’s custom-made tennis shoe, so big and wide it renders Johnson’s elf-like. He even has a scary-looking age-stained innersole from the 1960s - the original blueprint, he says, sticking out his sneakered foot, of his Nike Frees.Born in England, the Nelson-bred 45-year-old is the creative director of innovation in global footwear at Nike. For 17 years he’s been based in Portland, Oregon, quietly going about his work. Then the New Zealand Institute of Design called with good news - an invitation to fly him home to Auckland this month to receive the John Britten Black Pin for achievements in design. The same night he flew in, he gave a speech

about what it’s like to head one of the top design departments in the world. He heads a team of 23 designers in the innovation lab for the world’s most recognisable sportswear brand. It’s a job that requires equal parts logic and creativity, and an ability to predict the future. “You’re always looking at things through the eyes of the athlete. It’s always, ‘what’s next’? I’m constantly researching new materials, new technologies, new insights,” he says. “Athletes are changing. They’re getting a heck of a lot stronger, fitter, faster, so there are much higher demands on the product. It has to evolve with them.”Matt took science at school but his real passion was sport. He grew up idolising Richard Hadlee, Martin Crowe, Chris Lewis and, at Nelson College, played any sport he could. At 13, he and his mates would even break into the sports centre

at midnight, throw on the floodlights and play tennis until 2am. Meanwhile, his shoes got a hiding, so rather than replace them with money he didn’t have, he’d spend hours fashioning durable solutions. Well before kids scooted along the footpath on wheeled sneakers, Matt was attaching the top of a roll-on deodorant to his shoes to minimise friction.Call it fate, but the day he figured out his future was the day he forked out for a pair of Nikes. As he left the shop, a silver sports car drove past, and he had an epiphany.“It clicked in my head - somebody’s making these things, deciding what they look like and what they do. I went to school the next day and my teacher said, ‘That’s industrial design’. ‘What’s that?’ He gave me a VHS about manufacturing at Philips radios. I watched it and thought, ‘That’s my job’.”Matt went on to study at Wellington

Polytechnic School of Design, before getting a job at Fisher & Paykel. But, by 28, it was time to stretch his wings. He flew to San Francisco and met with Ideo, Sony, Tonic and finally Apple, where he met British designer Jonathan Ive, the company’s senior vice-president. “Jonathan said to me, ‘Are you sure you really want to do computers? It looks like you’re kinda into sport’.”When Matt agreed, the gods intervened once again. Ive knew a designer who’d just left Nike. “He told them, ‘Fly this man up’. So they flew me up and I got the job.”Over the years he’s worked with All Blacks, Kobe Bryant, Serena Williams, Justin Gatlan, Maria Sharapova and his favourites, Roger Federer and “Rafa” Nadal. This story originally appeared in the Weekend Herald canvas magazine.

Tahunanui resident, Sam Hippo-lite, was so cold last winter that he would wear a beanie and clothes to bed to try and keep warm. But Sam will have nothing to worry about next winter after the house he rents was last week fully insulated, as part of the Warmer Healthier Homes project in Nelson and Tas-man. The project is a partnership between the government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, Can-terbury Community Trust, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Nelson Bays Primary Health, and aims to insulate around 300 houses around the region over the next two years. It is being managed by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, with people referred to the project by the NMDHB.“The place was so cold I said to the landlord that I wouldn’t stay here unless he did something to make it warmer,” Sam says. “It’s got two heat pumps and fire but that still wasn’t enough to keep us warm - I was so cold I was going to bed with a beanie and all my clothes on, just to keep warm.”Sam says living in a cold house is a concern for him because he has suffered from serious respiratory health problems. “I had the year from hell with my health last year. I got double pneu-monia and lost some of the capacity of my lungs, so if I get cold I’ll end up in hospital,” he says.Sam says the Warmer Healthier Homes is a great idea and he is grateful to all the people involved in the project who arranged the insu-

lation of his house. He was eligible for free insulation after being hos-pitalised with respiratory problems and having his home assessed for the project by insulation specialists, Absolute Energy Ltd.NMDHB public health promoter, Bronwyn White says there is a di-rect link between cold, damp homes and poor health and that “warming up a home means fewer hospitalisa-tions and fewer days off work.” She says there have been 15 referrals to the project and so far nine homes have been insulated - people need a Community Services Card to be eligible for the project.Canterbury Community Trust’s Bill Dahlberg says the trust is providing $150,000 each year for the project over the next two years, with the EECA providing $165,000 this year. Although the government launched Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart in 2009 that helped insulate 250,000 homes nationwide and 3600 in Nel-son, Bill says Warmer Healthier Homes is different because it targets those people “who need it most”. “A lot of these people either don’t know about it or are reluctant to ask about it,” he says. Bill says they are already getting some good feedback on the pro-ject but it will be comprehensively reviewed to determine if it is a suc-cess.“We need to prove it can work to ensure the project is more than a one or two year project, and to en-courage other group involvement in this very worthwhile challenge of warmer, healthier homes for our communities.”

Competition was strong, but it was Nayland College student Adam Pauling who walked away with the Cawthron supreme award for science.Cawthron Institute’s Science and Technology Fair has been encouraging young scientists from the community for over 30 years, and last Wednesday saw the award’s evening for 2014. With around 19 special category awards and 14 Cawthron awards, the amount of prize money available totalled $6500, with the two supreme winners getting $500 each.Adam received the John Cross award for Best Scientific Investigation for his project, Salty Trouble, Strained a Mussel?, alongside Waimea College’s Christopher Dippie who won Best Technological Investigation.

Adam’s research focused on mussel feeding rates in different salinities, in a bid to work out the most favourable environment for mussel growth. After finishing the project with five minutes to spare, Adam is not only happy to have won one of the supreme awards but extremely surprised at the achievement. “I wasn’t really expecting anything great from doing this, I was just doing it because it was fun and interesting, and so to get something out of it, especially the top award, is certainly a great honour.”Adam also won the gold award for the science section, making a total of $750 which will be going towards an exchange trip to Europe next year.

Stolen clothes, Tuesday, October, 21:After having her clothes stolen off her washing line just over a week ago, Hazel Trethowen has had a huge amount of feedback from those hoping she gets her items returned. Unfortunately, she still hasn’t heard back from police about her stolen clothes but has passed pictures of her two irreplaceable dresses around second-hand stores in the hope they will be recognised.

Fusion loaf , Tuesday, October, 21:The fusion of brown and white bread into one loaf has been popular with curious customers at The Swedish Bakery. Owner Bronwyn Eriksson says while the loaf is only a trial, it will continue to be made for a few more weeks yet.

Tip jar thief, Tuesday, October, 15:A 33 year old man was arrested on Monday, October 20, in relation to the theft of tip jars from Nelson store counter-tops. Theft of tip jars had been reported in the Hardy St Sprig & Fern, 623 in the City and the Vic Brew Bar.

NMIT’s 110 year-old original building has been restored to its former glory.Thousands of students have passed be-neath the eagles and anchor of the Hardy St building which was finished in 1904 and last week it was officially re-opened for thousands more. The $200,000 restoration has included re-levelling, removing rotten weather-boards, re-painting the exterior in herit-age colours and re-roofing.NMIT chief executive Tony Gray says it marked the start of the future life of the building.“We hope what we’ve done allows it to be moving toward another 100-plus years.

We’ve tried to restore the exterior to what it would have looked like when it opened 100 years ago, while still providing really good spaces for our students and staff. “First and foremost, we’re here for educa-tion and training – we’re not really in the business of restoration of heritage build-ings. However, the building is important to NMIT and significant to the Nelson community, so we are delighted to have been able to restore it.”The Nelson Technical School – the fore-runner of NMIT – was set up in 1904 and the building was designed by Stead Ellis, a trained architect and secretary to the Nelson Education Board. It opened

in 1905 and initially offered classes in cookery, engineering, woodwork, com-merce, craft, secretarial and plumbing. The land that the building sits on was donated by Nelson City Council and construction was led by John Scott Jnr at a cost of £1124. The building was un-der crown ownership until earlier this year when it was transferred to NMIT under the Government’s Tertiary Educa-tion Institute Crown Asset Transfer and Disposal Policy. Today, it’s the base for NMIT’s Applied Fitness students. The restoration was managed by Onus Construction and the building painted by Pinnacle Painters.

Locals renting out homes for tourists:I have been alerted to a story that you have recently run on

holiday houses. As an association we have nothing against people renting their houses out for short term accommodation. We do, however take considerable umbrage at the amazing unfairness perpetuated by councils that allow such an unfair play-ing field. Private homes compete direct-ly with commercial accommodation but are not required to have the same safety features and compliance issues that commercial accommodation pro-viders are compelled to have. Domes-tic accommodation providers are not required to pay the hefty costs levied by councils that commercial accommo-dators are compelled to bear. They are provided with services for free by coun-cils that are a cost to commercial ac-commodation providers and they make no contribution to the running of Nel-son Tasman Tourism that commercial accommodation providers are, again by the council, compelled to make.We believe that domestic accommo-dators are a vital part of the accom-modation offer in any market but they shouldn’t be subsidised by all the other ratepayers. They shouldn’t be able to of-fer substandard accommodation and they shouldn’t be allowed to freeload off those that they compete with by not supporting the sterling work being done by Nelson Tasman Tourism. We believe that a council serving the best interests of their community

should address these issues and not as-siduously ignore them. The council is putting their community and their visi-tors at risk! All that we ask for is a level playing field on which to compete.Michael Baines,Chief Executive, Motel Association of New Zealand.

Ripping people off, greedy sods.Brenda Kenny.

I think it's a great idea... bring tourists, such as families who

may not like to stay in motels. They spend money in Nelson and boost lo-cal business. Also gives people a break from the mortgage for a while. No brainer really if they have somewhere else to stay, such as extended family. Amanda Duncan.

Makes it hard for struggling motels who have gone through a

long winter. Bonita Wilkinson.

Items stolen off clothes line: Yes [it happened to me] but yonks ago, when I lived in Stoke.

Towels, jumpers and some kids cloth-ing. But she was caught. Jeez, that's real desperate measures right there. Sharon May Patterson.

Years ago in The Wood my daughter and I lost bras and

knickers. Reported it to the police. A while later a whole lot of undies were found in the bush. A guy was charged.

Ours weren't among them, guess the guy must have liked ours so much he decided to wear them. Brenda Kenny.

Some people must be so des-perate. Or just plain weirdos.

Janelle Thorpe.

Hazel Trethowen good on you for making everyone aware I

hope you get your things back. That just sucks big time. Ema Posa.

Fingers crossed I get it back! Hazel Trethowen.

Thank you for letting everyone know. The pictures you put up

of your dress is gorgeous. I would be upset too, if someone stole my best items of clothing. I hope the burglar gets caught, and everyone gets their be-longings back. Jannelle Patterson.

Rai Valley Area School is hosting a fun 1980s-themed fundraising night on November 8. The 50 year old school is looking to install a solar heating system for their pool, along with some other basic upgrades and maintenance work so it can continue to service the community through the summer and autumn months. The school has around 100 students on its roll, the majority of whom fully utilise the use of the pool and it is a welcome facility for the whole community, especially through the hot months. The school has been given a ball park figure of $10,000 to complete the intended work. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased from Rai Valley Brick Oven, The Rai Valley Tavern, the Havelock Gas Station or by email from [email protected].

It’s been 64 years since Pat and Graeme first met. A lot may have changed since then, but the devotion between hus-band and wife certainly hasn’t. Four years after first meeting through a 1950 Otago Christian Youth Retreat, Pat and Graeme married in Dunedin on October 21, 1954, with her two sis-ters as bridesmaids and one of Graeme’s brothers as best man. Before the marriage, it was suggested to Graeme that he train for the ministry, and if you’re a minister you move all around the country. He asked Pat if she would go with him, she said yes, which was as good as a marriage proposal. Graeme's mother wasn't so keen on him joining the min-istry though, so he pulled out of it. But the engagement stood.Straight after their marriage, the couple went to live in Christchurch where they had their first home together, a brand-new three bedroom bungalow. Graeme had qualified as an account-ant in Dunedin and had worked for the company Vacuum Oil in Christch-urch, before being head-hunted to take up the role of company secretary for Baigent’s Timber in Nelson, in 1963. After working as the national secretary of Churches of Christ in New Zealand from 1978, he became more and more involved in budget advice, helping those who were struggling to pay debts. Since then, they have been involved in many groups including the YMCA, and in 2002, Graeme was awarded the QSM

for his services to the community. Throughout their 60 years together, there has no doubt been a mixture of rough and happy times, and Pat says a lot of their strength has come from their faith, as well as each other. “We’ve had a few ups and downs, including losing a granddaughter, but it’s been a good 60 years. We’ve met an amaz-ing lot of people through the things we have been involved with. Graeme’s

uncle is Sir Garfield Todd, who was the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia years ago so, we’ve had dealing with lots and lots of people.”Maintaining a long and happy marriage isn’t always easy but Pat has her tips on how to achieve 60 years. “Patience and forgiveness and doing things together, that was really one of our strongholds. Graeme just expected me to be there and he still does.”

Pat and Graeme Todd celebrated their 60 years of married life together on Saturday. Photo: Jessie Johnston. Inset: Pat and Graeme on their wedding day in Dunedin, in 1954.

Nelson South Kindergarten has a warm, welcoming environment, with friendly, responsive teachers, where individuals matter and curiosity is fostered by 100%-qualified teachers. A strong multicultural community focus underpins the teachers practise, ensuring that children are actively learning alongside people, places and things that support them to reach their full potential. The teachers practise around literacy and numeracy, alongside their transition to school programme, supports their belief in children being well prepared for school and life. Structural engineer Audrey Farreyre is the latest recruit at Davis Ogilvie’s office in Nelson. Originally from south-east France, she recently joined the South Island-owned multi disciplinary firm which provides engineering, surveying and planning services. “I always wanted to be an engineer. It is a great career, especially for people who like problem solving. It is also a career that allows you to travel.” An engineering scholarship took her to Gothenburg, Sweden, for 18 months to do a Master of Science in Structural Engineering. On graduating, she applied for jobs in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. “I got a job in Dunedin. I had no idea where it was and had to check on a map after I realised that the first interview had gone well, and I had a chance.” After seven years there, Audrey moved to Nelson with her Kiwi husband and 2 year old daughter, Chloé. She loves her job, particularly developing the business by building new client relationships. “I really like the fact that Davis Ogilvie is well-established and focuses on quality and practicality.” She says people are getting used to seeing women in engineering. “When I talk to people here in Nelson they are more surprised that I managed to live in Dunedin for so long. Nelson is so different, and is simply so much warmer. I really enjoy living along the Matai and cycling everywhere, and I can’t wait for the sea swims to start again.” 277 Hardy St • Ph: 548 4425 • www.do.co.nz

Colliers International Nelson has been providing landlords and tenants with industry-leading, professional services in commercial and industrial property for many years. Debbie Cade joined the Colliers team in August this year and is fixed on establishing herself in the Nelson region, with a focus on leasing commercial properties. Debbie sees being the only full-time female commercial broker in the area as a strength, “There are many women out in the commercial world, both as landlords and business owners, who will relate well to working with a female broker” says Debbie. “I can assess a space and see its potential for a business owner, which means I can take their vision and apply it to a particular property to help them find the right space.” Debbie said her past experience as a business owner herself, working in the property renovation market, and years of collaboration with clients, means she has the skills to provide excellent service for landlords and tenants alike. “My belief is people buy from people and communication is the best tool you can have” said Debbie. “Give me a call with your brief and I’ll work hard to find you the best solution.” Colliers International has 12 offices around New Zealand, providing a wide range of award-winning commercial services. Silvana Gottini, co-owner of Southern Exposure Tours (S.E.T.), a NZ-owned small group tour company, is passionate about the tours they offer. She leads many of the trips herself and says that people come away feeling like they have been travelling with a bunch of friends, not on a group tour. So, if you are “not a group tour person”, this is a great alternative, while still having fabulous off-the-beaten-path experiences and feeling safe in countries that may be a little out of your comfort zone.

Travel has always been her passion, especially Latin America, which she describes as a complete sensory experience. “It’s so much more than Peru and the Inca Trail.” says Silvana. So why not experience the wonder with her on the South American Sojourn, which she will be taking in August. Pop-up art gallery on Trafalgar StA pop-up art gallery has opened on Tra-falgar St and the artist behind it says it's a fantastic way for people to check out some local art in time for Christmas. The gallery is in the building where Foxy Lady was, opposite SBS Bank. Artist Mar-ilyn Andrews says this is the third pop-up art gallery she has opened."We fill the void in between tenancies so we're on a week-to-week lease, which means if people want to see it they have to get in quick."

There are 11 artists with work on display at the new gallery and Marilyn says it's a nice collaboration. "We share the load, share the costs and share the space, and it gives local artists an outlet to show their work. It works out really well."The pop-up gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm and Mari-lyn is encouraging people to get in quick. "We really don't know how long we're here for, it could be two weeks or it could be twenty weeks."Marilyn Andrews in the new pop-up art gallery on Trafalgar St. Photo: Andrew Board.

Just after I learned of the tragic deaths in the North Island when four people in a dinghy had overturned, with only two lifejackets be-tween them and two people drowning, we experienced the following:Three young women were out rowing along near Rocks Rd. Out of interest I enquired as to their lifejackets - "oh we forgot them, we didn’t have time for them, we don’t need them anyway" – well, I heard it all and then some stuff about my heritage. Being the good bloke I am I waited for them to come ashore where I observed their lifejackets in the boat… stupid.Yesterday, we observed four young people rowing a dinghy toward Haulashore Island with very little freeboard. It was almost swamped by a small ship passing some dis-tance off. I apprehended the young women and skipper and returned them to shore. They were grateful for the lift, especially after I explained about the tragedy up north.I eventually found out the young skipper did have his life jacket with him but wasn’t wearing it. I pointed out that he is respon-sible for the lives of the girls and asked if he had checked the weather forecast. "Yeah, sunshine" was the educated response. In fact the weather was due to go round to a strong southerly. We think we saved a life that day. Then we meet this solo skipper, personal flo-tation device on, struggling to make head-way with his tiny little electric outboard. Congratulations to this guy who had enough sense eventually to park the boat in the ma-rina and walk back to Tahunanui to get his car, and get out of the south-westerly 30 knot conditions. What do we have to do to get the message across that stupidity around the water could cost you your life? Be prepared, check the weather, take two forms of com-munication, don’t drink alcohol and take a second form of propulsion.

For advertising that really works!

The mark of The marsdensThomas Marsden, a watchmaker, became Nelson’s largest landowner when he bought his Stoke property in 1848. He developed the land sur-rounding Isel House and passed its management to his 21 year old son

James in 1865. James continued to farm the Isel Estate until his death in 1926. He left money to the An-glican Church, Salvation Army and the Cawthron Institute, while his sister’s bequest allowed the building of Marsden House in Nile Street.

Trooper James Bernard Coley (1893-1981) (Se-rial No. 7/543). Coley was born on 12 March 1893 in Foxton. On the Auck-land War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as Mrs E.J. Sullivan (mother), Shannon, New Zealand. Coley enlisted for service dur-ing WWI from Richmond, where he was working as a farmer. He served as a trooper with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and embarked from Wellington for Egypt on 16 October, 1914. Coley survived the war and was discharged on 27 February, 1919. He died in Palm-erston North on 10 April, 1981, aged 88.

Nelson TraiNiNg Centre

Youth Guarantee

For 27 years Nelson Training Centre has been training hospitality students for local industry at a foundation level of skills and proficiency. We are accredited with NZQA and Service IQ (Industry Training Organisation) approved and of-fers

• National Certificate in Hospitality Entry Skills level 2 •NCEA level 2- Vocational Pathways- Service Sector

“Although it is important to gain qualifications.”It is just as important to ingrain the understanding of the attitudes that will develop focus, systems, routines, solid work habits, safety and hygiene prac-tises, developing consistent quality of pace and performance.

We have developed a con-textual environment that as-sesses learners on practical observation and naturally occurring evidence with all unit standards, including in-dustry literacy and numera-cy skill development.

Success through compe-tence and confidence devel-ops self-esteem and a sense of direction. We use a Path-way Action Plan designed so individual learners can take

their own responsibility for long-term goals and aspirations.

We have operated a registered café / restaurant for many years. Our café is open to the public every Thursday of the school terms, offering learners the real life daily skills required by industry.

This includes, all front of house and kitchen positions, and allows learners to gain multi skills yet still see focus on their natural abilities, which may be in a specific area.

Our free Friday invited guest luncheons, give more detailed skills and cus-tomer service and interaction. These include buffets, set menu, and finger food functions.

We have had the good fortune to serve many voluntary groups and organi-sations on these days, giving back to the people in the community who are

often taken for granted:

Hospice, Big Brother Big Sisters mentors, Food bank, Salvation Army, Trade Aid, Lifeline, Cathedral Parishioners, Stoke Senior groups, Support Works, Youth Service, Rotary, SASH, Citizens Advice.

We are grateful that we can offer both training and serve such wonderful community organisations. This shows that funding for training can be greater than the single intent it is meant.

We also started the Modern Apprenticeship scheme in Nelson graduating the first apprentices in the south Island. Bouterays Restaurant, Hopgoods Restaurant, Anchor bar and Grill, Rutherford Hotel, all took on apprentices that completed their training at these establishments.

We have been 100% locally-owned and operated for all this time, under-standing the local needs and of the highs and lows that occur in this industry throughout the seasons.

Our philosophy that has withstood the test of time is simple.

“Attitude Determines Performance” All our staff hold true to this motto, and the right action that this instils in all who have passed through the training centre.

Our tutors are proficient and up to date with current trends, but more impor-tantly, able to drive learners to understanding what it takes to gain sustain-able employment, and the attitudes this entails.

We have a roll-in, roll-out enrolment, so learners can join throughout the year.

This allows peer support and encouragement while sharing skills and knowl-edge with each other.

“The best way to find out if you know something is to teach it to someone else”.

The training is free for 16 – 19 years olds, funded by Tertiary Education Com-mission

Stihl Shop Richmond is one of our true local success stories. In their first year of opera-tion they were acknowledged nationally as the Most Improved Stihl Franchise. Part of this success is contributed to their dedica-tion to their c u s t o m e r s and provid-ing what they want. So when c u s t o m e r s and local boat owners made it known to m a n a g e r , Grant Blan-chet, that they wanted some-one local to provide top quality boat and marine servicing, Grant went ahead and organised it.This month sees the opening of the new Stihl Shop Boat Servicing Workshop. Cam-eron Williams is in charge of the new op-eration and, being a factory-trained Yamaha and Mercury qualified technician and well-skilled on all brands, with 12 years of local experience, he’s just the man for the job. Cameron can take care of everything local boat owners need, right from an initial pre-purchase inspection through to ongoing ser-vice and maintenance of any brand of boat or outboard motor. With summer coming, it’s important to keep your boat, outboard and trailer in top condition. Cameron will pro-vide regular servicing to keep it in great run-ning order, ensuring safety and reliability. With the back-up of other local businesses, he can take care of everything under one roof, whether you need a WOF, replacement of marine glass, wiring and electronic instal-lations, boat and trailer repairs, repowers or complete refurbishments. For your convenience, Stihl Shop offers a free

pick-up and delivery service as well as a mobile service. They will work in with what suits you best. Cameron will offer honest and friendly advice, recommending any work that needs to be done and letting you know how much it is

likely to cost so there aren’t any budget blow-outs. Call in and see Cameron now in his new Gladstone Road workshop (just behind the ex-isting Stihl Shop retail store) and he will ensure your boat is ready to perform at its

best in time for summer. In line with Stihl Shop’s reputation, he offers top-quality workmanship, backed up by top-quality parts and accessories. Customer satisfaction and outstanding results are paramount and he will have you out fishing, water-skiing and enjoying the big blue with the assurance that your boat is good to go!

Cameron and Grant are excited to be opening the new boat-servicing division at Stihl Shop Richmond.

Go to Nayland.chalkle.com to register for upcoming courses. This term we introduce the dead (or alive) poets’ society, where students’ explore and discuss a wide selection of poetry. For those interested in textiles or interior design, custom-make a lampshade using funky fabric; cre-ate multi-coloured screenprint designs using sten-cilling techniques; sew a separate; have fun felting pieces to fuse added colour and texture to other crafts, or finish off knitting projects you’ve had on the go. For the artists, join Ross Whitlock’s direct oil painting techniques with a focus on pleinair painting; Larisse Hall’s colour and colour-mixing

course; or treat yourself to a smashing weekend of mosaics with Elvira Pontier creating two garden pavers. Improve your physical, mental, emotion-al, and spiritual well-being through mindfulness, yoga or the natural, hands-on healing technique of Reiki.Nayland College Community Education is using

Waimea College principal, Larry Ching, is resigning at the end of this year concluding a 43 year career as a teacher, deputy principal and principal in schools throughout the Nel-son-Tasman region and New Zealand.Larry has been principal at Waimea College for the last 12 years following six years in charge of Awapatu College in Palmerston North. He had earlier been deputy princi-pal at Nayland College for six years and spent 18 years teach-ing science at Motueka High School, Westland High School and Christchurch Boys High.Although Larry's career path to the top job at Waimea ap-peared to have been carefully mapped out, he says it was never planned that way. In fact, Larry admits he never intend-ed to be a teacher and "got into the job quite by accident". "When I was a student at Nel-son College, I really loved sci-ence so when I left school I be-came a science technician with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Then I wanted to get some more qualifica-tions so I went to university to do a science degree but I had no money so I took a teaching scholarship. "I only did it to pay my way through university - I had no intention of going teaching. But when I gradu-ated I went relief teaching at Christchurch Boys High and

found I loved it. "It's interesting, though, be-cause my career path was nev-er planned. I just applied for the jobs as they came up and here I am 43 years later."Larry says one of the big-gest challenges he has faced at Waimea College has been managing the school's rapid growth. The school has grown from 1100 students to 1550 in the last 12 years and they have worked hard to ensure that "the school hasn't got so big that students get lost".Larry says it has been "a re-ally difficult decision" to leave Waimea but he feels the timing is right. The school is "in good heart" and he is also keen to ex-pand his role as a mentor with the Principals Programme run by Centre for Educational Leadership at University of Auckland.Larry says he has had many highlights during his time

at Waimea including seeing the school's students excel at sporting and musical competi-tions, opening new buildings like the school's $2.4million gymnasium and working with "such dedicated and talented teachers"."Last week I attended the sports prizegiving and the level of achievement of those young people blew me away. I always enjoy watching school sport and when I told my wife I was resigning she said 'good, I'll be able to see you at weekend without going to sport'." School Board of Trustees dep-uty chair, Sue Malthus, says Larry has been a wonderful principal and his resignation came as a shock at last week's board meeting. "Waimea has been so lucky to have Larry. He is such a good leader."Sue says associate principal, Graeme Smith, will take up the role of acting principal.

Double Olympic champion shot-putter Valerie Adams is making the most of her enforced injury break by inspiring young New Zealanders to "get away from their electronic games and screens" and into physical activity and sport.Valerie has been touring the country as part of a NZ Post-sponsored activity programme, ActiverPost, which came to Nelson last Thursday. The four-times world champion joined about 200 school childen aged five to eight from around the region at Saxton Field athletics track where she went through a series of Get Set Go activities developed by Athletics New Zealand."It's been fun working with kids around the country and connecting with the community," Valerie says. "They are the future of this country so we need to en-courage them to keep active and healthy. "It's not about finding the next track and field star. It's about inspiring these young people through events like this."

Michelle Welsh has only been powerlifting for a year, but she has already been selected in the New Zealand powerlifting team.Michelle competed at the Na-tional Powerlifting Champi-onships in August this year in Christchurch, where she placed third overall in the women’s 85kg+ weight class. She says that gave her the con-fidence to complete an applica-tion form for the New Zealand team. She was successful and will represent New Zealand at the Asia and Oceania Power-lifting Championships held in

December, in Melbourne. “I sent away the application af-ter placing third at the nation-als, but I never thought I would be successful. I am really sur-prised to have come as far as I have,” says Michelle. She competed at the National Championships with the flu and a broken toe, but still managed to squat 125kgs, bench press 65kgs and deadlift 155kgs, “I know I can do bet-ter and I am looking forward to competing again,” she says. Michelle trains five days a week powerlifting at Results Gym in Nelson and is coached by Jason

Hylkema. “She works incredibly hard, there are not many girls as driven as her when it comes to lifting heavy weights, she is in a league of her own. Each train-ing block she is consistently improving. If she continues progressing, she can achieve whatever she wants in power-lifting,” says Jason.Michelle will compete in Mel-bourne on her son’s 17th birth-day and has promised to bring him home a medal. Michelle says her goal is to represent New Zealand at the Powerlift-ing World Champs one day.

What a stunner of a weekend that has just gone. Warm, beauti-ful sunny skies, albeit with a little wind thrown in for good measure. It wouldn’t be a Labour weekend if the weather was perfect, however Saturday morning was the pick of the days with boats galore at Tasman and Okiwi Bay boat ramps. Gusty winds made fishing difficult on Sunday and Monday, although a few DBFC members managed to sneak out in Pelorus Sound in shel-tered waters and land a couple of big reds as the snapper start moving up the sound.Scallops are still plentiful and in good nick. The odd kingfish was caught at D’urville but the snapper were the winners overall. Reports of snapper ranging from 1 kg to 10kg have been caught in Tasman Bay, but still not in huge numbers yet as the water temperature is still a bit cool for them to come in, and with a wet week ahead it will further slow them down a bit more. The kayakers have informed us they have been catching gurnard, kahawai and small snapper in and around Cable Bay, as well as Okiwi Bay. Flasher rigs from 2/0 up to 6/0 hooks, with small bits of pillies, have been doing the damage.Last Sunday, the Dawnbreakers

Fishing Club had their first club social day, held at The Tasman Bay Cruising Club. Over 50 members at-tended making it a great turnout for the season opener. It is a great way to meet like-minded people in a so-cial environment and find out what’s going on fishing-wise in your own back-yard. As an example of how the club helps its members, we are actively promot-ing safety on the water, by encour-aging and discounting the price to members to partake in a Day Skip-pers' course. We believe that every-one who owns a watercraft would be safer having done the course. We have also organised weekends away as well as day trips on the club cal-endar. We also have regular guest speakers on a variety of topics every month. Our guest speaker this month from MPI Fisheries (MAF) was able to go through the ins and outs of the rules regarding catching cod in the Marlborough Sounds, size/bag lim-its on finfish, and the laws on the use of longlines. It was very informa-tive and enabled members to have points clarified that they were not sure about. To join or find out more about the club, email us at [email protected]

The swimming pool at Hamp-den St is officially open for business. The pool opens today for the summer and, despite the some-times cool temperatures out-side at this time of year, those in the pool won't feel it as it's fully heated. The pool is the only outdoor swimming pool in Nelson city which has lifeguards on duty when it's open to the public, but another major selling point is the heating that sees the main pool sit at 26 degrees."It's safe, it's family friendly, it's just a great place to be," says Nelson South Swimming Club recorder, Fiona Lulham. The club runs the pool on be-half of the school and opens it to the public every day of the week. The pool is also the home to the Patterson Swim School. The Nelson South Swimming Club was also a winner in the Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive this year, and with the winnings they've ordered some inflatables to help attract more families this summer."We were really fortunate to get some money from the Car Company so we've used that to buy some really cool in-flatables, it's like a big obstacle

course," says Fiona. The pool is now open to the public from 3pm to 4pm on Monday to Friday and on week-ends from 12noon to 4pm.A family pass for the season is $150 and that's for the whole

family as many times as they like. Or it's $2 to $3 for kids and $4 for adults each time.To keep up-to-date with in-formation from the pool visit their Facebook page under Hampden St pool.
