STATE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
There was a time when a prediction of sensational successfor a, State High School hockey tournament would have earnedthe forecaster nothing more than a straightjacket. However, what you are witnessing here today is the unalterable, and grati-fying, answer to the visionaries who first tinkered with the wildthoughts of a rink tourney.
True, it was more than a couple of years in the planningstage; but this whole show, mad and wonderful and exciting asit is. goi s lar tc . l back in 194'!. So wo are now in the 27th annua lState hockey tournament.
Since its inception the schoolboy hockey tournament hasshown steady growth and progress as the caliber of play andplayers improved. And , as the tourney strides deeper into itsthird decade of existence it is perfectly evident that the sky isthe limit for this thrill-packed tournament.
Rack in 194:;, when Medl'ord beat Melrose JJ-1 for the firstState championship, few people would have given even a flicker-ing thought to the prospect of high school hockey teams beingsuch a magnet. Imagine, this tournament has attracted over200,000 adults and students in just the last four years.
Each yeiir the tournament supplies enough new thrills tomake even veteran fans forget (he past. However, some itemsfrom yesteryear which should be kept in mind as this year'stourney progresses here at the Boston Arena are:
—-Arlington, with five titles to its credit including the 1967crown, has won more tournaments than any other school.
—Seventeen of the past 20 f i n a l s have been won by three orless goals; and, there has been only one co-championship asMedford and Needham played to a 2-2 stalemate in 1944.
—Modford (1943 and '44) and Lynn English (1956 and '57)are the only teams which can claim back-to-back championships.
—When Natick beat Maiden Catholic 10-1 back in 1951 itmarked the highest scoring final in tourney history.
—There have been on ly ten s h u t o u t s in the past, 26 cham-pionship f ina ls ; and, only one loser (Arlington 3-6 to MaidenCatholic in 1948) has fashioned more than two goals.
I n d i v i d u a l h ighl ights from out of the past would f i l l a book.Rut th is is another year, and another set of heroes are in themaking as the State High School hockey tournament moves fromround to round and the championship f ina l , March 18th.
