2015 is shaping up to be a positive year for the accommodation sector. Whilst theeconomy is not at full strength we expect continued improvement in the corporatesector and the discretionary leisure sector continues apace. We are yet to understandthe impact of the oil price reduction but it should be net positive for Australia. Theemployment rate should continue to grow and rates should remain low. These settingauger well for our sector.

Inbound is very strong at the moment and this should continue also. As an industrywe now receive more visitors (inbound) than we send offshore (outbound). If we overlayall of these factors it augers well for our sector.

Leisure and corporate should both continue to grow in 2015. The MICE market isless resilient and whilst we see some improvement across the board for certain industriesit remains to be seen if this new demand will fill the void of the reduced demand fromthe resource sector.

The major challenges at present include:• Inbound competitiveness. Our neighbours have realised the potential of the

emerging markets (particularly Asia) and they have positioned themselves well tomaximise the opportunity. Australia boasts the right ingredients to be appealing to theAsia and Middle East markets in particular. However we haven't improved our policysettings and marketing expenditure fast enough to maintain the lead. As such wenow find ourselves catching up. The positive numbers from Asia somewhat mask thelost potential income we might attract if we have better Visa processes and increasedfunding for marketing.

• Air Access. With the proliferation of Low Cost Carriers and air capacity we mustfind ways to open our access to the world.

• Infra-structure. With both federal and state governments now actively seeking Infra-structure spending initiatives it's important we deliver transport and major tourismdevelopments.

• Industrial Relations. This topic seems to be avoided by successive governments. The industry understands the need for pragmatic reform to make our industry moreflexible and competitive. We must continue to agitate for reform. Our team members, guests and industry stakeholders all stand to benefit.

China is still at the forefront in terms of inbound tourism markets and I believe wecan do more to position ourselves with this market. Visa reform and tourism fundingare critical. China is our largest market by expenditure and the growth potential isastounding. India has potential as a market but it is less mature and we require directflights before we can capitalise on this opportunity. Indonesia is probably the market withthe greatest potential coming from a low base. The Indonesian travelling consumer isgrowing enormously and the tourism industry is doing all it can to harness the potentialfrom this market - including to continually lobby for changes to visa restrictions. ForMantra Group, the Indonesian market is particularly important as we grow in this region, with the emerging middle class in Indonesia definitely an exciting new opportunity.

Continual network growth from low-cost carriers is proving greatly beneficial forregional tourism on the domestic front. I was also pleased to see the Cairns-Bali routeintroduced by Jetstar which will open up reciprocal benefits to those regions.

Mantra Group will continue to focus on quality developments and acquisitions inIndonesia. On the domestic front I'd like to see more Peppers CBD product, but againthe development has to be the right fit.

2014 marked a major milestone with Mantra Group's listing on the ASX which hasprovided us with an opportunity to see some excellent development opportunities cometo fruition.

ENGLAND wants to make theSouthport Bowls Club its homefor the 2018 CommonwealthGames.

The heads of the Common-wealth Games Association ofEngland are negotiating totake over most of the facilitywhich was established in 1914,and the city’s oldest bowls club.

Chris Brace, house directorat the Southport Bowls Club, said the CGA England teamhad visited for the second timeyesterday and was confident adeal would be made.

“It will be a substantial fi-nancial gain for us,” Mr Bracesaid. “We’re all incredibly ex-cited about it.

“From what we understandthey want to take up aboutseven-eighths of the club, sowe will still be operating. It willbe the home base for their en-tire Games team.”

Councillor Dawn Crichlowsaid it was a great coup forSouthport.

“Executives would have allof their meetings there andathletes would regularly be in,”Cr Crichlow said.

“It’s a very exciting time forSouthport. The bowls club willbe their venue weeks beforethe Commonwealth Games sothey’ll be around for a while.”

News of the England nego-tiations comes a day after Bris-bane Mayor Graham Quirksaid he would discuss a jointBrisbane, Gold and Sunshinecoasts bid for the 2028 Olym-pic Games at a Council ofMayors (SEQ) meeting onMarch 6.

Sports director for Com-

monwealth Games EnglandDon Parker, on the Gold Coastthis week with the CGA En-gland committee, said theCoast was a regional city thathe felt could handle the heat.

Mr Parker said he had beenblown away by the facilities onthe Gold Coast for the 2018Commonwealth Games andthat Metricon Stadium at Car-rara was the best option for theopening and closing ceremon-ies.

“I think what’s really excit-ing for the Commonwealthmovement is that the GoldCoast has a population ofabout 400,000 people and fora regional city to host theCommonwealth Games is a bigstep,” Mr Parker said.

We have it over Cairns IN REGARD to Steven Isles’ letter(Bulletin 26/02/15) calling for co-operation with Cairns regardingtourism, he is dead right there arethings Cairns has that Townsvilledoesn’t have and I hope neverdoes.

Last time we were in Cairns wasthe middle of last year when wevisited the city while on an out-bound cruise ship, and because ofthe size of the ship we had to comein via ship’s tender to YorkeysKnob.

Bit of a rough trip, althoughgoing back to the ship was madequite pleasant as we waited in theclub near the pick-up point andsampled some fine Queenslandales, so felt no pain at all on the re-turn. The city did look a bit untidyand bleak, but it was a Monday soperhaps debris from the weekendwas still being cleaned up.

Nothing too out there so far, every trip has something to talkabout, all was handled quite ad-mirably with the worst result a fewwet tourists from sea spray.

The one thing that I always findirksome in Cairns is the Japaneselanguage everywhere in the city,on street signs, in shops and thelike. OK, I can hear the multitudessaying of course they do with all

the Japanese tourists they get – it’sto be expected.

I don’t agree. That may havebeen useful in years gone by whenCairns inbound tourism was goinggangbusters and every secondtourist was from Japan, but I donot believe the numbers fromJapan are anything like what theywere in years past.

Japan also has grown so muchthat many Japanese speak Englishas a second language, so is this sys-tem really necessary?

It’s not something needed onour street signs and shops. Towns-ville has plenty of two-legged in-

formation stations who do a greatjob.

One other thing that we have issomething that many placeswould love to have – our people, they are our greatest assets.

Never in all our travels in mostcountries overseas and in all statesof Australia have we met suchfriendly, generous people as wehave locally.

Steven Isles has some verygood points, revisiting the saltwa-ter chlorination of the rock pool isa no-brainer and should be lookedat by Council.

The Strand is something that is

unique to Townsville and must benot only used to its full potential, but also nurtured and protected –a difficult balancing act but oneCouncil seems to have a hold on.

Perhaps a yearly air show alongThe Strand could be looked at,possibly near or after the V8s – oreven part of the V8s.

A vintage/sports show andshine car rally ending up with aStrand picnic could be a viableevent, there are many such poss-ibilities to explore.

One of the things that influ-enced me to move up here a tadover 10 years ago was the people, their resilience, friendly manner, and amazing generosity which isshown in small and large waystime and time again.

A good example recently was afundraiser held at the BellevueHotel for the wife of the ex-publi-can who is battling cancer.

Not only was a fair amount ofmoney raised on the day, but theband booked for the day also per-formed free of charge. This eventis a perfect example of how smallthings go on day by day that typifyour city’s magnificent attitude toothers.

Airportmakestop 10THE Federal Department of In-frastructure and Regional De-velopment has released its 2014 annual report for Airline On Time Performance, with Whit-sunday Coast Airport making the top 10 airports in Australia for both on time arrivals and de-partures.

Tourism off to a busy start

Bowen Tourism and Business chairman

PAULMCLAUGHLIN

BOWEN Tourism and Business has started another busy year. On the mar-keting side, we have attended the Mel-bourne Caravan and Camping expoand received wonderful feedback about our region. Hopefully the money we have spent attending this event will be paid back many times with the grey no-mads filling our caravan parks this win-ter.

We have also run a campaign in Air-lie Beach to attract day visits and week-end stays for the short drive market. This is being followed up with a larger campaign focused on Townsville. We are working with Whitsundays Market-ing and Development on this program in Townsville. Bowen Tourism and Business has taken out Tier one adver-tising spots as part of this campaign which will run for the month of March. This includes print and radio media, let-ter drops and social media. We will alsobe setting up a display stand at a trade event on the 13th of March followed by a day at the Townsville defence bar-racks on the 14th March. We will show-case Bowen as the closest drive holiday to Townsville and we will be using our tag line of being “Top of the Whitsun-days”.

In other projects, Bowen Tourism and Business will be launching its new Mango Mascot in the near future with all members having access to a Mango character that suits their business. Our objective is to “mangoize Bowen”. We received so much publicity from Man-gogate, Bowen is world famous for our Mango, so we need to capitalise on this. You will see a heap of new mango char-acters getting about Bowen in the com-ing months. We also hope to get the Little Mango installed at the Front Beach to coincide with this release.

In other news, we have kicked off planning meetings for the offshore su-perboats which we are running in July

and also the Gem of the Coral Coast festival which will be held again thisyear in October.

Stayed tuned for more informationon these projects.

Open airports, charge for national parks: reportTourismMarkLudlow

Restrictions on secondary airportsshould be lifted and more user fees fornational parks should be considered asa way to kick-start the tourismindustry, the Productivity Commissionhas found.

While the number of internationalvisitors to Australia increased from 2.5million in 1992 to almost 6.7 million in2014, some tourist hotspots such as

north Queensland have suffered fromrestricted access and tired, ageinginfrastructure.

The report found Australia neededto lift its game to be able to competewith the emerging markets in Indiaand China, and to achieve a greaterslice of the global visitor market

The Productivity Commission hasrecommended a further liberalisationof access to Australia's secondaryairports to help clear the way for moreinternational visitors.

It said it did not make sense that

there were access restrictions atAvalon Airport in Victoria and theproposed airport at Badgerys Creek, west of Sydney, but not the Gold Coastand Sunshine Coast airports in Queens-land.

"The commission thinks there isvery little leverage to be gained in inter-national negotiations from restrictingaccess to any Australian airport, withperhaps the exception of Sydney'sKingsford Smith Airport, and theregional package could be extendedaccordingly," the report said.

In its most controversial recom-mendation, the Productivity Commis-sion said cash-strapped stategovernments could charge access feesfor entry to national parks to help boostsub-standard infrastructure andprovide a better experience for visitors.

Access fees are already used by somestate governments, including NSW andTasmania, and would be more suited toheavily visited national parks, thecommission found. It suggested theycould be used for car parks or campinggrounds.

"Given the persistent funding con-straints on parks agencies to constructand maintain infrastructure withinnational parks, there would likely bebenefits from governments reviewingtheir fee structures for national parks, while considering social equity object-ives," it said.

In a move which would inflameenvironmentalists, the commissionhas flagged greater private sectorinvestment in national parks toimprove tourist experiences, withoutthreatening environmental values.

RACE WITHAAA HUMBLE STATT RT BUTRRBIG FINISH

I t started over a few beers in aLondon pub and went on tobecome one of the most successful sporting events ever.

The brainchild of international track star Lord Sebastian Coe, the 2012 London Olympics pumped billions into the British economy.

It also was the highlight of Coe’sextraordinary career that saw him go from a humble, working class lad to world-class athlete and leading international sports administrator.

Coe, guest speaker the QUT Business Leaders’ Forum on February 9m ,says the decision to bid for the Gameswas not made in a boardroomsurrounded by high-flying executives.

“I was sitting in a pub in West London with International OlympicCommittee member Craig Reedie and we thought, why don’t we go for it,”Coe says. “That began an extraordinary journey.”

Up against New York and Paris, theLondon bid was considered a long shot.

But the athlete’s approach to life, sport and business had always been

GAME CHANGER: Sebastian Coe speaksat the QUT Business Leaders Forum.

that you sometimes have to risk failurein order to succeed. The Olympic Gold medallist remembers the shock of losing a big race early in his career andhow that forced him to reconsider histraining and running methods.

“It was a seismic moment of my lifeand every day I thank God that I did not win that race because it meant I would not have challenged the orthodoxy.

“I took that into the delivery of theGames. You have to be bold andchallenge orthodoxy. ”

Coe concedes that much of thesuccess of the London Olympics reliedon the example set by the Sydney Games in 2000.

“I am a fully paid up fan of everything to do with Australiansport,” he says.

Coe says he has met with organisersof the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and was impressedwith the efforts made to include thecommunity in the event.

He says the Commonwealth Gamesis still a top-notch sporting event and one of the few events that bringsCommonwealth nations together.
