Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development

17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 associated targets constitute the core of the UNIDO 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

A new framework to guide all global developmentendeavors for the next 15 years.

Implementation of Sustainability Standards to meet SDGs

to guarantee that processes, products and servicesprovided by organizations support the three pillars ofthe SD: Environment, Economy, Social.

SSs may be developed by single businesses, businessassociations, environmental or social non-governmentalorganizations, or governments.• For example, Global G.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices) is

a farm management certification scheme pioneered bysupermarkets

• ISO 26000 provides guidance to businesses and otherorganizations on social responsibility to improve theirimpact on workers, natural environments andcommunities.

5

One way to meet SDGsis implementing the requirements of Sustainability Standards (SSs)

Role of accreditation for the implementation of SD

All sustainability standards claims results in meeting one or more SDGs

How can we rely on the credibility of these claims?

6

ACCREDITATION is an impartial andobjective process carried out by a 3rdparty (Accreditation Body) that offerstrasparent and non discriminatory routefor the world-wide recognition of credibleand trustworthy CERTIFICATION carriedout by 2nd parties (ConformityAssessment Bodies) to the 1st parties(Organizations or persons) whichprovide products & services

By mean of a three parties play

Contribution of accreditation to the implementation of SD

Accreditation is an attestation of competence and impartiality of

conformity assessment bodies (CABs) to carry out specific conformity

attestment tasks.

These CABs include but are not limited to :

• bodies that certify management systems products and persons,

• bodies that undertake verification and validation,

• bodies that performs inspection,

• calibration, testing and medical laboratories,

• provideres of proficiency testing,

• producers of reference materials.

7

ACCREDIA contribute to meet SDGs through accreditation

Many CABs /LABS are accredited by ACCREDIA according to voluntary / mandatorystandards and owners’ schemes which are directly or indirectly related to one or more SDGs

2060 accreditations of which:• 365 CABs (certification, inspection, verification)• 1400 LABs (testing, medical, PTP – calibration , RMP)

Examples on how ACCREDIA supports specific SDGs

Let us make the example of SDG 7

Which is the role of ACCREDITATION in its framework?

Accreditation supports organisations and governements in the process of:• enhancing energy efficiency• improving economic perfomance, • Following a low carbon and low-

emission growth path• reducing consumption of resources• preventing unsafe, unhealthy or

environmentallly harmfully productsfrom entering the market place.

9

ACCREDIA contribute to SDG 7 (EnMS)

Energy Management Systems (EnMS) support SDG 7• Certification standard: ISO 50001:2011 ISO 50001:2018 (certification of

management systems)• Accreditation standard: ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 and ISO 50003:2014

What is?This international standard outlines the energy management system requirements for an organization.

Which are the goals ?to enable companies to establish and control processes necessary to continually improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption.

ACCREDIA activity:3253 company sites certified by 13accredited CABS

The methodologyby means of an energy analysis a company starts making a detailed picture based on which can set in a controlled methodology to ensure measurable results over time and thus improve its energy performance.

The advantagesto reduce energy costs, GHG emissions and other related environmental impacts.

ACCREDIA contribute to specific Italian certification schemes (SDG 7)

In addition to the accreditation of CABs for the certification of EnMSsalready spread worldwide, ACCREDIA has been officially assigned byby Law Decree n.102/2014 (Italian implementation of the Directive2012/27/EU on energy efficiency of 25 October 2012) theresponsibility to outline in cooperation with UNI the ItalianStandardization Body and support the accreditation of two Italianspecific certification schemes which contribute to enhancing use ofenergy according SDG 7:

The above certification and accreditation schemes were approved by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of the Environment with the Inter-directorial Decree dated May 12, 2015

• Certification of Companies Providing Energy Services (ESCO), according the Italianstandard UNI CEI 11352:2014 (PRD accreditation)

• Certification of Energy Management Experts (EGE), according Italian UNI CEI11339:2009 (PRS accreditation)

COmpanies providing Energy Services (ESCO) support SDG 7• Certification standard: UNI CEI 11352:2014 (certification of services)• Accreditation standard: ISO/IEC 17065:2012

What is?This Italian standard outlines a control list and minimum requirements ofabilities (organizational, diagnostic, planning, management, economic andfinancial) that ESCOs shall have to offer their servicesWhich are the goals?to enable ESCO to provide energy efficiency services to their clients (inconformity with EN 15900), with guaranteed results.

ACCREDIA activity:900 company sites certified by 24accredited CABs

The methodologyA contractual arrangement (EPC) between ESCO and the beneficiary company assures an energyefficiency improvement measure, verified and monitored during the whole term of the contract. The advantagesinvestments (work, supply or service) paid for in relation to a contractually agreed level of energyefficiency improvement or other agreed energy performance criterion, such as financial savings.

Energy Management Experts (EGE) support SDG 7• Accreditation standard: ISO/IEC 17024:2012• Certification standard: UNI CEI 11339:2009 (certification of persons)

What is?This Italian standard outlines the requirements of competence for persons who has the knowledge and skill needed to manage energy use efficiently (EGE)

Which are goals?to certify the competence of EGEs to manage energy use efficiently on behalf of companies

Accredia activity:2715 persons certified by 21accredited CABs

The methodology• to identify energy flows and support the implementation of energy efficiency

improvements by means of energy audits (systematic analysis of energy use and energy consumption of a site, building, system or organization)

The advantages• to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs.

The large growth of Sustainability Standards

The number of Voluntary Sustainable Standards has widely grown recently.

They can greatly help building a greener economy

but may create dispersion of efforts and difficulty of control.

A new challenge: the Sustainable Development Management System

In consideration of such a wide diffusion and specificity of the manyexisting Certification Standards that deal directly or indirectly with theSustainable Development Goals, each one them having the potential tomeet one or more SDGs, the Italian Quality Infrastructure, whichACCREDIA is part of, acknowledged the need to develop a new generalcertification standard that may act as a common factor pertaining tothe different SDGs potentially applicable:

17

The Sustainable Development Management System (SDMS) of production and supply processes of the service

(pertaining to an organization and its value chain).

The Sustainable Development Management System

The new standard outlines the requirements of a sustainability management systemwhen an organization decides:

a) to demonstrate the sustainability of the product or service provided, through the sustainable management system of its processes and/or value chain, (from the cradle to the grave);

b) to demonstrate its commitment to support the Sustainable Development Goals applicable to its processes and/or value chain, in addition to the requirements of the clients, the applicable mandatory requirements;

c) to meet the expectations and increase the satisfaction of the interested parties including the future generations, through the effective application of the systemand continual improvement.

The SDMS can be used by any manufacturing supply chain organization or service provider that wants to guarantee the sustainability of the processes included in the scope of application.

Sustainable Development, among which priority to be given for the future generations

PDCA to start from a comprehensive Sustainability Analysis to identify which SDGs are relevant and assess the progress of the associated SDG targets related to the processes and services to be certified

Implementation of a Sustainability Program to progressively meet the applicable SDGs and related targets
