“To install 5/16” strip or plank you need a clean, dry flat wood sub-floor about 1” thick. 5/16” x 2”oak strip is usually laid with a 4 or 5 boardborder. The corners or offset are either meteredor log cabined for desired effect. Some bordersincorporate “feature strips”, of contrasting color;such as walnut, mahogany, redwood, teak, etc. These feature strips come in 5/16”, 1/2” and 3/4”widths and are used either one or two per border.

On occasion, patterns are built into the cornersdepending on the skill of the floor layer, and thedesigns detailed. The border should be squaredto the room and any necessary rips scribed in atthe wall line to take care if irregular runs in thewall line. The field is racked out loose, with theends overlapping the positioned border. Theflooring is then accumulated into a close or tightposition by hand and then using any type of toolsuitable for the purpose: ie. a nail set, screwdriver, chisel or the like, driver at a slight angleagainst the rack of loose boards, start a nailabout a half inch in from the edge nearest youin the furthest board, apply tension with your tooland while the rack is under tension, tack and setthe nails. DON’T NAIL LOOSE BOARDSWITHOUT APPLYING TENSION; they willusually split. Accumulate and tack the whole floorinto position and cut in rips as required. Strikechalk lines or pencil lines every 7” on center andnail down these lines one inch apart across theroom and 1/2” in from the edge of the boards.Butt joints are also nailed 1/2” or 3/4” in from theends of the boards.

In the case of plank flooring, care should betaken in nailing the butts; to keep them out of theway of any plugs or dowels that may be desiredin the floor. These floors are nailed with a 1” #15flooring brads, using a HighPRO or equal nailer, making sure the boards are down to the subfloorand not up in the air. The nail holes and cracksare filled with appropriate wood filler and afterthe filler dries the floor sands and finishes likeany other wood floor.”

Those areas of the country that use 5/16” topnailed oak flooring should have at least 3/4” ofsubfloor, or more ideally 7/8” of subflooring. Thenails used to fasten 5/16” oak to the sub-floorare 1” long. These nails are driven vertically andare countersunk into the top flooring. To containthe entire length of nail and avoid splitting thesubfloor or splintering it at the bottom; the overallthickness should be 1 1/8” minimum, includingthe 5/16” top floor. The 7/8’ subfloor would alsoadd structural strength to the floor and avoiddiaphragm or “driving board” action in thehundred of thousands of square feet of 5/16”glued down parquets.

The method we suggest for “on grade” slabs andsometimes on suspended slabs is as follows:

Two plies of 15 pound asphalt saturated felt, each set in a bed of asphalt mastic with theedges butted and the end joints offset and turnedup the wall to the height of the finished floor. Thesecond layer lapping the first layer by a halfsheet, to form a sealed vapor barrier.

Apply a third layer of asphalt mastic using an1/8” notched towel, over the membrane. Cut 1/2”plywood, (not particle board) in 2’ x4’ sheets; andinstall in mastic at a 45 degree angle to the wallline. Overlay the 2’x4’ pieces of plywood with fullsize sheets of 1/2” plywood, crisscrossing thefirst layer.

Staple the two layers of plywood together with7/8” divergent point staples 12” on center.

The slab should be clean, flat and dry before jobis started.

This will provide a subfloor that will accept topnail strip or plank, T & G strip or plank, and glueddown parquet and provide a strong, moistureresistant, versatile subfloor. For additionalinformation see installation manual and theFinishing/Refinishing manual issued by theNational Oak Flooring ManufacturersAssociation.
