    3. Lesson 1: Start-up

3.1. Introduction of the Group: Experiences, Expectations

Michael Becker welcomed all participants and discussed about the experience of allparticipants with the internet as well as about the expectations of the participants.Details are listed in Annex 2.

3.2. How does the Internet work (background and basics)

Former use of the Internet: (http://shell.rmi.net/~kgr/internet/part1.html ):

1968 when the American government needed to link universities, militarycontractors and defense contractors together so that they could cooperate onadvanced research projects together

information was stored in just one computer, it would be an easy target for a

nuclear attack One way to survive that threat was to replicate and distribute the information

between many computers all over the country using a network Its like the oldexpression of not keeping all of your eggs in the same basket. If one basket falls, not all the eggs break.

In 1975, some of the languages, or protocols, that computers would use to talk toeach other were agreed upon. Several major universities and defensecontractors were linked together on a network called DARPANET all using thesame protocol which now known as TCP/IP or Internet Protocol.

In the mid eighties, many more colleges and universities were connected to theInternet. This allowed the universities to share research information, programsand recent news.

In the nineties, the Internet was opened up for commercial use as the cold warended. Soon more and more ways of communicating information across this new"Information Super Highway" were being developed.

Now it is possible to use the Internet to send letters electronically (e-mail) acrossthe globe or to your neighbor within minutes. You can look up information about

just about any topic you want to know about. The World Wide Web is a collectionof documents that spreads across 5 Million computers. You can receive newsfrom all over the globe, stock quotes, information about what to do in a certainarea, pictures of homes for sale, even the latest gardening tips Major librarieshave their card catalogs, abstracts of documents and sometimes even full text ofbooks, magazines and other information online. There are news groups whereyou can get information about one of about 15,000 specialized subjects. You can

even make a voice call to your cousin on another continent all for free once youhave your computer hooked up to the Internet.

    6. Lesson 3: Internet Research / Documentation / Internet

Explorer / Functionality6.1. Functionality of Microsoft Internet Explorer

MS Internet Explorer is a web browser or Internet browser, giving a full access to theInternet. With the first launch of this program, a wizard is demanding all informationregarding the Internet. All information entered into this wizard can be configured anytime later in the menu at Tools / Internet Options.

A page of starting into the Internet can be configured in Tools / Internet Options inthe tabbed dialogue General. After startup, MS Internet Explorer is trying to load asite from the MS homepage. It is recommended to set the homepage to a nearbylocated web server, in Cambodia it is the web site of the Internet Service Provider

(ISP). For Camnet it is http://www.camnet.com.kh, for Bigpond it ishttp://www.bigpond.com.kh.

The navigation buttons back and forward assist the user in navigating through thetext using a history. The stop button interrupts all loading processes, in case a wrongURL has been clicked or the responding time of a web site is to slow. In case awebsite has a dynamic content (web cameras, statistical data), the refresh buttoncan be used to reload the page from a selected location.

    6.2. Using / organizing bookmarks

Doing Internet research, it is important, to find back to a location at any time,

in order to continue research from this web page,

in order to give a reference for a quotation used in a study, in order to see if some new information are given after a period of time.

Therefore, URLs can be stored as Favorites, offering some tools to organize themin a hierarchical structure.

To Save a bookmark, click Favorites / Add to Favorites in the pull down menu, andthe following dialogue appears:

The bookmark (favorite) can be stored under the entered or given name in ahierarchical folder structure, which is being displayed under Favorites in the pulldown menu. Clicking on the push button Create in >> will offer a choice of folders, given by default from Microsoft and other software packages, where the currentbookmark can be stored.

  • 8/6/2019 27 Basic Internet Training~

It is also possible to create newfolders or reorganize and delete

    existing links.

To do this, choose Favorites /Organize Favorites from the pulldown menu, and look at theFavorites menu, after making thechanges.

It is also possible to reorganizefavorites in the Favorites menu, using drag and drop functions. Butit is not easy to handle the mouse.

In the navigation bar, there is a button to show thefavorites

The favorites will be displayed in the left part of thebrowser window. However, favorites are alwaysaccessible through Favorites in the pull down menu.

    Michael Becker Basic Internet Training

    17

    6.3. Using multiple windows

Using multiple windows can be an advantage to find web pages, without loosing thecontent through clicking on links. It can be also very helpful, to conduct variousresearches at a time. Unfortunately, parallel access to the internet is limited by thelow transfer rates of the modems. One possibility to open another web browser, is to select File / New / Window in thepull down menu. A new browser opens with the same URL as the beforehandopened.

Another option is to click the right mouse buttonabove any link and select Open in NewWindow, to follow this link in a new window.

6.4. Saving documents in a folder

Saving documents can be very helpful, if valuable information shall be saved

if the information shall be displayed again offline

To save internet pages, select File / Save fromthe pull down menu.

Depending on the selected Save as type, Textand graphics, will be saved in various formats.

  • 8/6/2019 27 Basic Internet Training~

    18/44

    Michael Becker Basic Internet Training

    18

    6.5. Opening documents again

However, stored documents can beopened again, even if no internetaccess is available. Therefore, selectFile / Open from the pull down menu.

In the following dialogue, a internetpage can be selected from the history,or a file can be opened from a file list, which opens behind a Browse pushbutton.

    6.6. History

A history is helpful to find web sites again, when they have been visited before. As theuser tends to click intentionally through web

pages, he sometimes neglects the aspectwhere am I and do I find this place again?.Therefore, MS Internet Explorer protocols ahistory of all base URL being visited, and ahistory list help the user to find web sites again.Click on the folders until you can select theURL.

    6.7. Downloading

The internet facilitates alsodownloading of files stored on the

server. If the file type is known bythe users operating system, adialog will pop up to ask the user, whether he likes to open the file(run program) if the file extensionis related to a program or to savethe file to the (hard) disk.

    6.8. URLs

URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) are addresses pointing at a unique location inthe Internet. Entering a URL into your web browser will lead you to the same Internetpage everywhere in the world. A normal URL is consisting of up to 4 components.

    the protocol type

    the domain name

    a file path

    a file name

    Example (http://www.mlmupc.gov.kh/ministry/cabinet/minister.htm):http: // www.mlmupc.gov.kh / ministry/cabinet / minister.htmProtocol, Separator, Domain Name, Separator, Directory, File name

A new message addressed to thesender will be opened, including theincoming message, which is displayedwith a black bar beside the originaltext. Some mail programs use a >character to inline mail text.

It is now possible to directly answerinside the text without retyping thecurrently received message.Formatting of text is also allowed, butthe user should be aware, that not allemail programs display formatted text.

Files attached in the incoming mail willnot be included in the reply message.

Mails can be also forwarded to otherrecipients. Click on the Forward

button in the tool bar, and enter theemail addresses from our addressbook, or manually. Files attached on amessage will be forwarded.

    9.2. Spell checking

For official emails, it is helpful to passa spell-checker, in order to show away of professional communication.Click on spelling after typing a new

message, to check all words with thedictionary.

However some word can not be foundin a dictionary and have to be ignoredby the spell-checker.

9.3. Exchange of MS Word Documents, (fonts)

In Cambodia, many problems arise inthe field of using unspecified fonts. Therefore, the exchange ofdocuments is highly unsecured.Sending a document in Khmerlanguage does not necessarily secure, that my partner is able to read it,

because he may not avail the requiredfont.Microsoft Windows offers an option, toembed required fonts in a document, that all users can read a MS Word file, although they might not have therequired font. Using MS Word, chooseTools / Options, select the tabbeddialogue Save, and make sure thatthe option Embed true type fonts ischecked.

    28

However, embedding of one limon font increased the filesize of 1 MB. Because ofthis, it is recommendable to check the option Embed characters in use, if the

recipient does not need to edit the text.

    9.4. Communication codex

Using a network or communicating through the internet requires new forms ofcommunication, which are, in some cases less formal. In general, emails should beanswered as they appear. If someone send you a mail, starting with Dear endingwith Regards, it is recommended to answer on the same level. It is always good tokeep a friendly way of communicating, as long as you expect an answer. In someweb communities, the term Netiquette has been spreaded as a means of creatingawareness, that there are always people behind email addresses and networkingnames, who appreciate respect and friendly words.

Nevertheless, it is allowed to start a letter to a group of people with: Hi all,

    Dear Colleagues,

To whom it may concern, .

    9.5. Sending attachments

An attachment one or many files, attached and being send with anemail. Depending on the size of an attached file, downloading time ofemails increase accordingly. As most email accounts have a limited

space, the sending of email attachments is limited in terms of file size. Most Mailboxes have a limit of 1 MB, but for Cambodia, it is notrecommended to send more than 250 KB via Email.

After clicking on the attach button, a file dialogue opens, and all filesto be attached can be selected. Use SHIFT or CTRL to attachmultiple files, or click the Attach button accordingly.

In the meantime, the other groups familiarize with the functionality of MS Outlook

    Express.

    11. Lesson 6: Technical aspects

11.1. Configuring email for using 2 or more computers

In order to use one email account ontwo computers, some aspects have tobe taken into consideration.

Firstly, it is not desirable, to have twocomputers, where some emails are

stored on one, others are stored onthe other computer. This normallyhappens, as mails are (by default)deleted right after they have beensuccessfully transferred to the mailserver.

It is possible, to leave the mail on themail server, selecting the Properties ofthe mail account (Tools / Accounts). But as every mail box space of storingdata is limited (mostly 1-5 MB), it just

a question of time, until the mail box isreaching its capacity, and untilincoming mails will be refused by theweb server. Therefore, it is desirableto delete messages on the mail box, which are older than a number ofdays. This number should be higherthan the maximum interval (number ofdays), email checked on bothcomputers.

Example: Two accounts are set up,

and mail is checked on bothcomputers within two weeks, set theRemove from server after value to15 days.

For slow internet connections, it isalso possible to define to break apartmessages larger than a certain filesize, in order to avoid the transfer oflarge emails.

In order to make sure, that outlookexpress is not automatically using a

dial up connection, or automaticallyhanging up after receiving andsending emails, check the settings inthe tabbed dialogue as stated in thisimage.

    11.3. Data security / privacy

In general, all information given to or provided to or transferred through the Internetare, prone to be accessed by other users of the internet (hackers, students, webmasters). Although many efforts have been spent to make the Internet moresecure, there are still security gaps in many places. It is up to the user to give hisprivate information to anyone. Every computer can be spied by websites, as theprogramming language Java and others giving every webmaster the chance to spy

on the users computers. The same problem can be seen with email. All informationhere can be accessed with little knowledge. Nevertheless, the internet is verypowerful tool and the amount of data being transferred every day is tremendous. Forusing email, there are different possibilities to encrypt or digitally sign messages (e.g.PGP).

11.4. Using WinZip for sending attachments

Winzip is a program to compressdigital data without loosinginformation. It is a tool to pack (or zip)many files or subdirectories into onefile, in order to decrease the transfertime using email or internet. Aseverybody can get a sharewareversion through the internet, it is acommonly used tool for sending andreceiving email attachments ordownloading files from the internet.Zipped files can be discovered by theirfile extension .zip and their contentscan be extracted with WinZip.

Zipping (compressing): Press theadd button to add files to a currently

opened archive. Create one with theNew button if you want to create anew zip file. Or select the files / foldersto be compressed in WindowsExplorer, the click the right mousebutton to add the files to an archive(.zip file).

Unzipping (decompressing): Press theExtract button, after selecting thefiles to be unpacked in the list box.

Basic settings (e.g. folders, whereunzipped data will be extracted to) arelocated in the pull down menu underoptions / configuration.

    11.5. Virus protection approaches

Networking automatically gives computer viruses a good chance to reproduce anddistribute on various computers. Therefore, it is highly recommendable

to keep the virus software up-to-date

to conduct frequent checks on viruses on the system.

The program F-Prot is a tool to scan for viruses on hard disks, floppy disks and in thememory.

The program is a DOS program, andfits on one diskette. In case there areviruses in memory, the program alertsat its startup. As many viruses affect

the boot sector of hard disks andfloppy drives, it is recommendable toprepare a (virus-free) boot diskette, and keep it for the moment, a virusinfects the system.

  • 8/6/2019 27 Basic Internet Training~

    33/44

    Michael Becker Basic Internet Training

    33

Before starting a first scan, it isimportant to look at the options. As

some disinfection procedures cancause corrupted or destroyed files, itis recommendable to select the optionReport only to look if there is a viruson the computer.

In case there are some viruses, asafely stored backup of the hard diskshould be made to protect some filesfrom unrecoverable errors. Then, F-Prot can be started with the optionAutomatic disinfection to clean the

viruses from the hard disk. In case allfiles contents of infected files can beread and used, the disinfection wassuccessful.

11.6. Changing password for email accounts

Changing of passwords for dial-up service and accounts will be up to Mr. SarSovann. He will be introduced into the technical aspects of web administration.

In general, passwords should be replaced after 3 month and on demand in order toavoid misuse and access of not authorized persons.

11.7. Getting access to a Newsgroups Server / Using Newsgroups

Newsgroups are places of discussionin the internet. Every newsgroup canbe subscribed and is designed to acertain topic. In order to set upOutlook Express for accessingnewsgroups, click on the tabbeddialogue News in Tools / Accounts

Internet and intranet (LAN) are melting together, it is an easy way of

accessing people. Internet is a way of communication wherever you are.

How does the internet look like in the future?

Broadband access will offer a multitude of opportunities to make use of theinternet. It will be possible to watch videos, participate in videoconferences

and many more. Almost every computer can be a web server, so internet
