REFLEXION Y LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Todos ellos perseveraban en la oración (Hechos 1:12-14). Salmo — Yo creo en que veré las cosas buenas del Señor en la tierra de los vivos. (Salmo 27 [26]). Segunda lectura — Alégrense de participar en los sufrimientos de Cristo (1 Pedro 4:13-16). DEDICADOS A LA ORACIÓN Hoy, mientras esperamos Pentecostés, llegamos al final de la homilía bautismal de Pedro que hemos estado escuchando en las últimas semanas. Esta homilía fue escrita por un realista que conoció el gozo y la gloria de una fe de resurrección, pero que también supo que el temple de esa fe sería probado en el sufrimiento. Varios domingos atrás oímos a Jesús predicar: “Dichosos cuando los injurien,. . . por causa mía” (Mateo 5:11) y eso encuentra eco hoy en Pedro. Estas palabras se forman en la imagen de Cristo que reza al Padre del Cielo hoy, una oración colocada en el Evangelio de Juan justo antes de que Jesús pasara por su sufrimiento y muerte. Esperar al Espíritu, esperar nuestra misión por Cristo significa que, probablemente, aguardamos algún tipo de prueba y sufrimiento. No soportamos el mismo grado de persecución que Pedro y Juan pasaron, pero la fe de cada uno de nosotros eventualmente será probada. Y es por esta razón que nosotros, al igual que Jesús y aquellos fieles discípulos que se reunieron en la habitación superior, nos dedicamos a la oración.

TODAY’S READINGS AND REFLECTION

First Reading — The Eleven and the women devoted themselves to prayer (Acts 1:12-14). Psalm — I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Glorify God if you suffer for the name of Christian (1 Peter 4:13-16). Gospel — The Son will give eternal life to all those who are given to him by the Father (John 17:1-11a). DEVOTED TO PRAYER Today, as we await Pentecost, we come to the end of the baptismal homily from Peter that we have heard over the past few weeks. This homily was written by a realist who knew the joy and the glory of a Resurrection faith, but also knew that the strength of that faith would be put to the test and tried in suffering. Earlier this year we heard Jesus preach, “Blessed are you when they insult you . . . because of me” (Matthew 5:11) and this is echoed today by Peter. These words are also formed in the image of Christ who prays to the Father in heaven today, a prayer that is placed in John’s Gospel right before Jesus endures his suffering and death. Our awaiting the Spirit, awaiting our mission for Christ means that we are, most likely, awaiting some sort of trial and suffering. We don’t endure the same degree of persecution that Peter and John knew, but each of us has our faith put to the test eventually. And it is for this reason that we, like Jesus and like those faithful followers gathered in the upper room, devote ourselves to prayer.

O Mary, you always shine on our path

as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so

that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after

this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love,

to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus,

who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us,

through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of

God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger,

O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Oremos por nuestros enfermos, de nuestra Parroquia, de nuestra

comunidad, de nuestro país y de todo el mundo para que el Señor les dé la Salud de

cuerpo, alma y espíritu. Amén

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo: “Alégrense de compartir ahora los padecimientos de Cristo, para que cuando se manifieste su gloria, el júbilo de ustedes sea desbordante. Si los injurian por el nombre de Cristo, ténganse por dichosos, porque la fuerza y la gloria del Espíritu de Dios descansa sobre ustedes. Pero que ninguno de ustedes, tenga que sufrir por criminal, ladrón, malhechor, o simplemente por entrometido. En cambio si sufre por ser cristiano que le dé gracias a Dios por llevar ese nombre”. Seguimos en este tiempo de desconcierto definiendo nuestro ser cristiano, tal parece que el sufrimiento, las desavenencias, el dolor, aunque tiene sus matices acompañan en el itinerario de toda la humanidad, unos provocando el mal a otros a riesgo de convertir todo en una cadena de retaliación, lo importante que quienes profesamos nuestra fe en el Dios de la vida hagamos la diferencia, que El nos siga protegiendo y nos abra brecha a algo nuevo y mejor. Tengo que agradecer una vez más a varios feligreses que tienen sentido de pertenencia y están sensibles a la situación que estamos pasando como Iglesia en este engranaje de efectos por esta pandemia. Gracias por darse tiempo y venir a dejar sus ofrendas aquí en la rectoría o envían por correo sus sobres. Dios los bendiga abundantemente. Necesitamos de su ayuda económica más de lo que ustedes se imaginan. Que reciban el cien por uno por sentirse parte de esta su Parroquia de Santa Fortunata. Todavía no se ha recibido ninguna instrucción respecto a reabrir la iglesia, estamos aceleradamente haciendo algunos cambios en la iglesia para mejor funcionalidad y participación de todos. Pido al Señor que nos acomodemos todos en los diferentes horarios, aunque se tenga que renunciar al horario que era habitual para cada uno, todo estará bien, con la voluntad de Dios. Les suplico sigan asiduos a la Palabra Diaria y a nuestras misas dominicales. También todos los días a las 3:00 de la tarde a la hora de la Divina Misericordia a rezar el Santo Rosario para que cese esta pandemia. From the Desk of the Pastor... Del Escritorio Del Párroco... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: "Rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you

may also rejoice exultantly. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer. But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name.” We continue during this

confusing time that is defining our lives as Christians. It seems that suffering, disagreements and pain, although to different degrees, are part of all of humanity’s journey, at times causing harm to others and perhaps resulting in a chain reaction of misfortune. How important it is therefore, that we who profess our faith in the God of life, make a difference so that He continues to protect us and opens the way to something new and better. I must once again thank those parishioners who, with a sense of belonging, are sensitive to the situation that we are experiencing as a Church as a result of the effects of this pandemic. Thank you for taking the time by coming to drop off your offerings here at the rectory or by sending it by mail or on-line. God bless you abundantly. We need your financial help more than you know. May you be rewarded a hundredfold for being mindful of your membership as part of Saint Fortunata’s parish. As yet we have not received any instructions regarding the reopening of the church; we are now planning to make some changes in the church for a practical functioning and satisfactory participation for all. I am praying to the Lord that we will be able to accommodate ourselves to changes if necessary. All will be well, God willing. I encourage you to follow the Daily Gospel reflection and our Sunday Masses regularly and also to pray the Holy Rosary every day at 3:00 in the afternoon, the time of Divine Mercy, so that this pandemic ends.

REOPENING ST. FORTUNATA CHURCH Bishop DiMarzio has given authorization for the opening of Churches for private prayer and devotion only. Beginning Tuesday, May 26th, St. Fortunata Church will be open for individual prayer from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and will continue to reopen Monday through Friday. • The faithful must clean their hands with hand sanitizer and wear masks at all times in the church. • There is to be no congregating of people (e.g. gathering to say a rosary together). There should not be more than ten (10) people in the church and there cannot be a group gathered. • The faithful must not touch statues or other devotional objects in the church. • The faithful must observe social distancing rules. • The elderly and all who are health-compromised MUST be advised to stay home. • There is to be NO holy water in the fountains.
