1991-99 ROTOTOM ASSOCIATION: FUSION, COMMITMENT, CULTURE

The small town of Gaio di Spilimbergo, in northern Italy, is the starting point of the 25 year adventure that is Rototom Sunsplash. The Rototom Cultural Association is the driving force behind the nightclub where everything happens. A sound laboratory where reggae coexists with rock and punk, where the Ramones and Massive Attack blend with Fela Kuti, Yellowman and Burning Spear.

It is this fusion that defines the integrating profile, which guides the festival today. Also intact is the festival’s cultural and social commitment that guided the Rototom Association as it overcame the blockade on the Italian region’s cultural network by organizing hundreds of concerts and exhibitions; demonstrations for peace and in defence of human rights... and creating the largest reggae festival in the world.

1994-98 ROTOTOM SUNSPLASH IS BORN: THE ROMANTIC YEARS

The festival was born as a self-financed project in the Rototom nightclub, in 1994. It started out with the name the I National Reggae Encounter. Two days, 14 names in the line-up (among them Africa Unite, Almamegretta and Buju Banton) and two stages are enough to attract 1,000 people and to create Radio Rototom.

Romanticism permeates everything: the neighbourhood is another of the organizers and creativity transforms cages into bars and shops. The contest grows to 8,000 festivalgoers and three days. It becomes an essential event for those who make reggae a way of life. Its growth leads it to explore new spaces.

1998-99 THE REGGAE CITY ARISES

The summer of 1998. Camping Girasole of Lignano, the spa town near Venice. In its new location, the Sunsplash shapes its current structure: an authentic reggae city with three stages and cultural areas. 20,000 people and four days of festival confirm the event as a pole of attraction for those who, beyond the music, identify with the philosophy that is intrinsic to reggae: peace, love and respect.

The boom is measured by a peculiar scale: beer, which goes from being supplied in barrels to tankers. Forming a part of the festival’s boom is the first international broadcast via streaming (Arcoiris TV) and the Italian Reggae Train to connect the public. The ‘Italian Reggae Award’ is born and is won by Reggae National Ticket. This also marked the incursion into Jamaica of their singer, Alborosie, whose career is directly linked to the Rototom Sunsplash.

2000-09 OSOPPO: THE EUROPEAN DEBUT

2010-18 BENICÀSSIM: REGGAE HOLIDAYS

In the summer of 2000 the Rototom Sunsplash moves to the 250,000 square meters of Rivellino Park in Osoppo. Here it grows to be a European festival thanks to its proximity to Austria, Slovenia and Germany. The European Reggae Contest is born and the festival is reformulated as a holiday destination that lasts ten days. The extra-musical areas take shape -Social Forum, African Village, Vivir la Energía, Reggae University- creating a ‘daytime’ festival along with a night programme, dominated by the best of music and more stages: Showcase and Dub Room. The campsite, in the middle of the pre-alpine natural park, forges the feeling of belonging to the Rototom family among the public: 150,000 people per edition.

The golden moment of the Rototom Sunsplash is shook by the political context and in 2009 it says goodbye to Italy to find another destination where it can develop its musical project and intercultural coexistence.

Rototom Sunsplash begins its exodus towards Spain and after seven months of searching it lands in Benicàssim (Castellón), where in the summer of 2010 it celebrates the first Spanish edition. The 17th in its history and where it continues today, next to the Mediterranean, the event keeps growing: in stages and in extra-musical areas such as the Rototom Circus, in a space of 500,000 square meters and with 230,000 festivalgoers per edition. Among them there are more and more children and families: the beach and the weather enhance the event’s image as a holiday destination. The move also marks a shift from the European format to a global one as Spain opens the doors of Latin America to the festival. The Reggae Contest Latino is born and the event’s world tours begin. The values of peace, human rights and environmental protection that have always guided the actions of the Rototom Sunsplash remain strong in this new phase. So too its motto: Another world is possible, and the community born around reggae and the festival.

In one of the most refreshing corners of the concert venue, under dense pine coverage, Magicomundo rises. Here free and spontaneous play is the vehicle to travel through the territories that enrich the area, fostering creativity

and imagination. You can build things with recycled materials, experiment with water games, read, go to concerts or build sand castles. Magicomundo expands its range of ages with a space for children from 0 to 3 years with sensory experiences, natural materials and structures to develop their motor skills; board games for the adolescent audience and workshops and talks to give mothers and fathers other perspectives on parenting and education. All this with the collaboration of different groups such as Family Tree Kids, Imagine Elephants or Cayro, who have been added as part of the team of educators of Magicomundo Komba Education and its commitment to bilingualism in order to facilitate cultural exchange.

Another of the obligatory stops for the family audience, with its colourful and unmistakable tent, Rototom Circus has designed a program that includes

workshops with the Madrid School of Circo Diverso and the Valencian Circus Association, the traditional circus Olympics and up to four shows, with Pablo Cool & Dimitri Superstar, by Pallasos en Rebeldía, heading the bill. The Galician company is responsible for Festiclown, which has brought the circus atmosphere to places like Palestine or the Saharawi refugee camps, where smiles are needed. They share the space with Banton El Viajero, Circo Circulum and the Valencian Circus Association.

PACHAMAMASustainable development, agro-ecology and health all under one Dome

Out of the reggae city of Rototom Sunsplash rises Pachamama and its unmistakable Dome. A space for personal growth and reconnecting with Mother Earth through the values of sustainable development, agro-ecology and health, which has consolidated itself within the daytime cultural programme of the festival, which grows from year to year. Natural therapies, yoga and mindfulness, dances, talks, agro-ecology, permaculture, conscious food, super-foods, health, medicinal plants, the value of biological seeds ... These are some of the many elements that form the backbone of Pachamama and in this edition, the 25th anniversary, are once again on the agenda.

Festival by day - Cultural activities

YOGA TO START THE DAYEach day from 14:00, free donation therapies will open the Pachamama program and after that there will be different yoga sessions: Hatha Yoga; Nada Yoga (yoga of sound); Kundalini Yoga; Yoga in pairs and Dance Yoga.

17:00H DANCE AND MUSIC

Every day, starting at 17:00, the range of activities will open to dance and music sessions. In this slot, Ecstatic Dance, is worth highlighting, under the direction of Arun Ji, pioneer and promoter in Europe and India of this modality that proposes expression through dance and music, giving freedom of action and movement to the body. Pangea Tinamit’s meditative concert, is another event that stands out, which proposes living an experience of ritual art and communal meditation through sound, songs and instruments inspired by different places and cultures of the world.

LIVE COOKING AT SUNSETAmong the attractions of the program is a culinary formula that repeats after the success of its debut last year: the cooking shows that the Pachamama area will host every afternoon, before sunset. These live sessions of vegan and

vegetarian gastronomy will share the secrets of the Peruvian vegan

cuisine, with Naturalmente Laura and CarxofaLab, and

they will also explain how to elaborate gourmet vegan tapas with the chef Anay Bueno-CarxofaLab, among other proposals.

THE VALUE OF SEEDS

Every day the seed exchange table will be in

Pachamama, which helps to nourish the seed bank of the festival

and reflects its commitment to agrarian biodiversity; as well as permaculture workshops in the venue’s non-profit area.

of the Rototom Sunsplash extra-musical program since its time in the Italian town of Osoppo, in 2000, where it

was called Vivir la Energía.

Rooted in the theme of this year’s anniversary, 25 years of walking together, is the theme for one of the most creative spaces at the Rototom Sunsplash: Social Art Gallery. A platform and a meeting place to share and disseminate all kinds of artistic expression and enjoy live art. This open-air gallery gives voice and visibility to the fifteen proposals selected for this edition. Works that this year will reflect the idiosyncratic way of understanding Rototom as a mechanism to build a new world through community, cooperation, collective struggle and, rebellious and joyful unity.

A SOCIAL PuRPOSEIn 2017 this space changed its name,

from Art Symposium to Social Art Gallery, to reflect the cooperative aspect

added to the area: selling all works created in each edition to use their

profits to help fund social projects.

Solé Rototom Beach is an extension of the Rototom Sunsplash where you can enjoy good music and the best of com-pany, in a privileged corner of the Medi-

terranean. The festival’s official beach bar expands and reasserts itself on the beach as a part of the event’s intense programme and is a good alternative

to relax and regain strength daily for the festival. To get the motors running, from August 17 to 23, every noon Radio Rototom will set the scene in Gurugú, where the dancehall classes are open to the public will take over. In the af-ternoon, Solé will be visited by a large cast of DJs and their sets for a musical trip through Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, Jamaica and Brazil. Between dances and sets, chill out zone and a varied and healthy gastronomic menu for one and all, it’s a great way to freshen up this summer.

Remember that there are no ATMs in the venue. Nor are there tobacco machines.

This year you can discover the Desert de les Palmes, next to the festival, with your family and in a fun way with Itinerantur. Interpretive hiking and tourism experiences to complete your summer.

You will have a direct link with the festival thanks to Radio Rototom and its 24 hour broadcast. Set your hours of camping and rest! And if you cannot be there all week, teleport to Benicàssim with live streaming.

Do not forget the suns-creen and drink water. This year our ‘ecopack’ makes it easy for you: it includes a reusable glass, a cup holder and a 4 euro card to refill up to 3 litres of water (with or without gas) in the fountains spread all over the festival.

Multiple stages bring you an extensive mix of musical genres without having to leave the venue. In addition to the music, you can learn how to make custom jewe-llery, get to know African cultures, taste dishes from four continents or listen to environmental and human rights acti-vists and reggae gurus.

Collect your daily program at the InfoPoint in the campsite, the venue or the ticket offices and get the most out of your day.

The camping has everything: communal kitchens, market, ice for sale, lockers and mobile charging points ... All you need to bring is your tent from home (if you do not choose to come by caravan or book glamping); inflatable mattress or mat; kitchen utensils and a cooler. Also recommended is a trolley with wheels for moving luggage and a tarpaulin to give you a little more shade.

The roots of reggae, the genre around which the international event revolves, are to be found in Africa. These strong ties make the presence of this area necessary. Indeed it has become an unavoidable meeting point for those who visit the festival. With its own stage, beyond the music it is a space for debate, learning and artistic expression, dance, discovery, fun, consciousness and commitment to strip the arguments

behind the stereotypes

that still bedevil Africa and African society. A multi-purpose programme that is marked this year by: debates guided by Africans and afro-descendants, such as the Spanish MP Rita Bosaho and the winner of Got Talent, the poet César Brandon; fashion as an engine of change with the participation of the street sellers union; traditional and modern dance workshops at sunset; a musical journey from Niger to Senegal with six artists on stage and DJ sets until dawn.

Debate and collective reflection for another possible world

The Social Forum changes its format in 2018, without varying its objectives: getting to know and learn; fleeing from simplicities and static visions; addressing the complexity of the whole. To debate, discuss, reflect, expose and build, and do so collectively. With the motto Walking together, the tent of the Social Forum will open each of its five days with the screening of documentaries on social, cultural and environmental topics, which will be related with the debates. Sessions that will delve into the roots of contemporary issues from a critical perspective and bring invisible realities into the light, such as the struggle of immigrants to give a legal framework to the phenomenon of the street vendors, which is their only work option to earn a living. The drama of the refugees and the judicial crossroads in which those who try to save the lives of people fleeing from horror by sea are immersed; other views on education and projects that escape the conventional system; environmental threats to the planet; and the consumption and consequences of so-called recreational cannabis are the themes of the Social Forum 2018.

Experience crafts up close and learn to value the work done by hand, with care, transforming the public into a craftsmen and women, is the goal of this atypical market that brings adults and children together every afternoon. Together they will decorate the photocall of the welcome workshop with which they will open the programme of the area and will form a team on the last day of the festival to paint a large mosaic with silk paper for this 25th anniversary.

After these joint activities, every day, from 17:00 to 20:30, there will be double sessions for children and adults. Four daily workshops to learn how to make musical instruments with sustainable wood, create olive necklaces or visors with animal shapes; make toys with metal threads, learn the secrets of aromatherapy or make a 25th anniversary soap bar.

Creative and original products tempt the public to enter the market. With more than 70 stands for this historic edition the space has also been restructured, changing its axis to include: an ice-cream shop with a terrace to refresh the festive evenings will be the zero point where the streets of the market will converge. On offer is an endless list of articles: handmade jewellery made with cork or dried flowers; natural cosmetics; and eco-weaves and different styles - from urban to Rastafarian, alternative as well as from India - will be

joined by bioluminescent textile items, ceramic pipes and LED lamps for the cultivation of urban gardens. Record shops and games and even an optician with the latest in sunglasses complete the range of products.

The interculturality and fusion that characterises the Rototom Sunsplash expressed through its gastronomy. The festival opens its concert venue once again to the world’s cuisine. Forty gastronomic proposals make up the menu of this year’s edition. Dishes from four continents:

the kitchen and the stoves, the idiosyncrasy and wealth of each country.

Among the new features this year some of the highlights are the traditional cuisine of the Andean peoples of Latin America, with their potatoes with huancayo or choclo with melted cheese that will bring the flavours of the Pachamama; the time honoured tradition of aperitifs and snacks that are Basque pintxos and homemade vermouth will be on offer in El Ultramarinos tavern, based in the historic seaside neighbourhood of Cabanyal (Valencia), and the tasty sausages at another tavern, this time from Germany.

Also present in this open-air restaurant, there are other ‘local’ dishes: rice with a Mediterranean twist, salted fish, seafood and fish; Tapas and artisan ice creams. t h e c lu b sBorn from the special connection that connects the sound ‘made in Jamaica’ with the most embryonic Caribbean rhythms, the area Caribbean Uptempo is back in Rototom Sunsplash with its explosive fusion of ska, rocksteady, early reggae, calypso, mento, soca and cumbia, which will be on stage every night with the best selectors from the United Kingdom.

A line-up that includes Musclehead of Saxon Sound, Duke Neville, Gladdy Wax, D’Oxman, Artical Ranx, Asher G and the great Wassie One. Joining them, will be the crew of resident DJs, with Magoo Brixton MC, Tony Massive, Nembokid Selecta, Toni Face and Stefano Cecchi among others, who will alternate on the decks throughout the festival’s seven days.

Classic roots to hip hop, soul, ska and rock steady, all the way to Caribbean rhythms and music with black roots, the nights of the festival invite you to discover new sound horizons with the scenic trident that consolidates itself: the three clubs that fill the nights of Rototom Sunsplash with rhythm. The most veteran ones: the Roots Yard and Jumping are joined by the most recent addition Caribbean Uptempo for its second consecutive year to reinforce the vibes of the concert venue.

The sound system area where reggae returns to its roots. It is the ideal place to fend off the high temperatures of the August nights and a true oasis for the lover of the most classic sounds of the genre. One of its main attractions is that the Roots Yard brings to the decks some of the leading representatives of international sounds for the enjoyment of the hundreds of fans who make this space their dance floor every night.

The resident crew mixes it up on the decks with prominent international guests, the Jumping stage lives up to its name and invites the audience to get up and dance. Here all black roots music converges from its origins - afro, soul, r & b and funk - to its more modern derivatives, such as hip hop, dubstep, drum & bass and trap, to dance until dawn. In addition, since 2016 the project has been joined by the resident band Playa Desnuda, which each night displays its ‘jam’ repertoire with international singers.

The Rototom Sunsplash 2018 merchandise, reaffirms its eco and social commitments. In this edition, 100% organic cotton garments from the Stanley/Stella brand have been added to the collection, which follows an ethical and responsible production process endorsed by the GOTS and FairWear certificates. All, of the festival’s 25th anniversary commemorative t-shirts are made from organic cotton and designed by Stanley/Stella.

Furthermore, the sustainable fashion collection has been expanded, with new garments of hemp and organic cotton and using ecological dyes.

ROtOtOmGREEN … All containers installed in the venue and camping are recycling points. They are small, to reduce the visual impact and are in every possible corner. This has allowed us to reinforce the selective waste collection: almost 30,000 kilos of packaging waste in 2017 that translated into multiple environmental benefits. This collection effort has prevented the emission of almost 28 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 32 homes of three people and the water consumption of eleven people in a whole year.

A green and social festival

The system of reusable glasses is back with its solidary purpose. If last year all the revenue, 12,000 euros, went to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Castellón, in this edition the funds will be for the NGO that helps refugees Proactiva Open Arms. Also to be given solidary goal will be Adrian Booth’s photographic exhibition that was on show in 2017 at Reggae University: all his works will go on sale in the near future and the profits will go to ACCEM a Spanish organisation that works to improve the lives of refugees. The sale of the large-format creations designed in the Social Art Gallery will also go on sale and the funds will be donated to a social organization.

mERcHANdiSEAre the plastic bottles, triple that in 2017, that the festival avoided using with the installation of fresh water fountains, both still and with gas, and that is offered at an affordable price: 50 cents a glass of 35 cl or a litre for one euro in the campsite. The camping doubles its number of fountains and in the enclosure, in addition to the three fountains, 20 restaurants will incorporate water dispensers in their bars for the first time to facilitate public access to water.

This year the variety of biodegradable material in the bars is extended, repeating the system of reusable cups to a solidary end. The small liquor cups have joined the rest of the biodegradable crockery, including the corn starch straws that first entered the festival in 2017. All catering services use biodegradable materials, the recycling of which along with organic waste allows them to be reused for compost.

The Sunsplash has planted in the campsite over the years almost half a thousand new trees, which in addition to providing shade represents a small green lung in the festival.

The use of LED technology in different spaces; the recycling of non-potable water; the commitment to sustainable mobility, with the promotion of public transport and bicycles to move around the venue; and guidelines for responsible consumption that prioritize local products are the four other vertices of the ‘greensplash’ philosophy.
