24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 16, 2018

Dear Friends,

Back in 2002 when the clergy sexual abuse crisis first came to light in Boston, I remember so many strong emotions that welled up in me. I was angry, sad, confused, scared, frustrated, embarrassed and so many more gut feelings surfaced. It was a very difficult time. I was present for so many parish meetings where people voiced their anger at the Cardinal, the Archdiocese and the priesthood. I remember one particular meeting where survivors of abuse by a former assigned priest at the parish stood and with great courage told their story. I sat and listened and cried.

That was sixteen years ago now and yet we are once again unfortunately re-living some of those painful memories. As a church we are once again being reminded on a daily basis that we are a long way from the healing we all so desire. The recent news has unfortunately and sadly brought some of those strong emotions back. Our church is hurting and crying once again.

I have been praying this prayer these last few weeks written by Fr. Austin who is the pastor of Holy Family in Concord. I have included it in my bulletin letter this week in the hope that you might also include it in your prayer during these challenging days for our church.

Have a great week,

I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

Lord, we’re enraged by many thingsBut don’t let us get so angry that welose sight of all that’s good and holyin the motley crew we call the churchWe’re disappointed , Lord, but don’t

let our discouragement slip into empty hopelessness and we forget that

your mercy is always greater thanour sins.

We’re embarrassed Lord, but beforeour shame defeats us let it humble

us and cleanse us of our failingsand our sins.

We’re impatient Lord, with the snail-paced response or no response

at all. So light a fire in our heartsuntil we discern what we can do and

with your help...get it done. We’re torn and broken Lord, worried

and confused, distracted and confoundeddemoralized and lost.

Come, heal and mend us, help us findthe way. Care for us and calm us, lift

our drooping spirits, Lord anoint us with your wisdom.

Shepherd us O God from the darkness into light, from worry into hope,

out of chaos to the truth, from the desert to the doorstep of your mercy and your grace. Amen

Fr. Austin Fleming Concord

24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMESEPTEMBER 16, 2018He Began to Teach ThemThe Gospel this Sunday describes a major turning point in our lives and those of the disciples. It has to do with names.

1) Jesus gives the name “Peter” to Simon

The disciples are beginning to see that Jesus is much more than just one of the great heroes from the past—John the Baptist, Elijah, the prophets, etc.

I N C A R N A T I O N P A R I S H

6

Page 8: 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 · 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 Dear Friends, Back in 2002 when the clergy sexual abuse crisis first came to light

Jesus asks them. Without hesitation, Peter responds, “You are the Christ.”

Without realizing it, Simon had proclaimed the crucial depth that underlies all Christianity. Jesus was not just a buddy or a healer, as, up to now, they had been thinking. He was the long awaited Messiah ( = Christ).

So now the disciples had fledgling roots in what Jesus was teaching about himself. With this set of roots ho could now go one step further: “The Son of Man must suffer greatly … and be killed, and rise after three days.”WHAT?

This was the last possible thought the apostles could have had about the Messiah. “Suffer? Be killed? NO, NO!”

2) A second (temporary) name for Simon Peter

The same Simon Peter, who had boldly recognized Jesus as the Christ, suddenly could not digest it. This will never happen to you, master, we will never allow it!

What a contradiction! In response, Jesus flared out at him with anguish and frustration.

Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.

Satan?

Check out the temptations in the desert for Satan’s ideas (Mt 4:1-11). The devil’s enticements had the same basis as Peter’s do now: save yourself. Do not give up your life for others. Since you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread. Show your power. Be the

Christ. You keep talking about your heavenly Father: doesn’t he want you to carry out your mission instead of suffering and dying?

It will take a good while more for the apostles (and us) to understand this. When Christ does finally come to “suffer greatly and be killed” they actually run away! But terrible suffering had been in the scriptural tradition since its beginning. Read about the “Suffering Servant” in the First Reading. What the servant says there gives a model for what will be Jesus’ answer to Peter as well as to the devil.

I have not rebelled, have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard. ... The Lord God is my help; who will prove me wrong?

In other words, Jesus had “set his face like flint” toward love’s agony.

• “Simon” had called him “Christ” and therefore Simon could receive the name “Peter.”

• “Simon Peter” was blindly rejecting what Jesus knew to be his true mission, and therefore could be called by the name, “Satan.”

The truth? Jesus must

suffer greatlyand be rejected by the elders,         the chief priests, and the scribes,

and be killed, and rise after three days (Gospel).

Surely it must have hurt Jesus to have his mission swept aside by Simon Peter, even in a way meant to be kindly and protective!

Let us try to be with Simon Peter and not with Simon Satan!

Fr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.

Meet Father Donohoe-“I am with you; wherever you are, wherever you go, I am with you.”Father Stephen Donohoe embraced a vocation to serve as a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. As a young man, he felt the rst signs of God’s presence in the Holy Eucharist; that force would become what he describes today as “the bedrock of his priesthood.”

After ordination, Father Donohoe became a military chaplain. During deployment, he provided for the spiritual needs of men and women facing combat. He never abandoned those entrusted to his care and stood by them at every point. Father Donohoe continues this steadfast ministry today in the parishes of the Archdiocese. He says “a great joy of ministry is to see the grace of God enlighten the lives of other people. If we bring people to the Lord, He’ll do everything.”

To help ensure priests like Father Donohoe are cared for as they live out their vocation, please support the special collection on September 15-16.

Please watch and pledge your supportto this very important work of the Church!
