Music Hub launched at Thusong Centre

By Michelle Boshoff “WHERE words fail, music speaks,” is a well known saying by the writer Hans Christian Andersen. This saying came into fruition on Saturday when the Music Hub was opened at the Thusong Community Centre in Mashishing. It is a joint venture by Lydenburg Smelter (A Glencore Merafe Venture Operation) and the Casterbridge Music Development Academy in White River.Similar Music Hubs have shown success in White River, Nelspruit, Zwelisha, Kabokweni, Masoyi and Hazyview. This project was initiated by Mr Conroy van der Westhuizen (General Manager, Lydenburg Smelter) and Mr Mike Matthews from the Casterbridge Music Development Academy who also involved the Department of Arts and Culture. “We are hoping that formal music training will develop the learners self esteem and confidence and motivate them to work harder,” said Mr Mike Matthews from the Casterbridge Development Academy. Mr Conroy van der Westhuizen (General Manager, Lydenburg Smelter) was very proud of the efforts taken to initiate the Music Hub. “In addition to the Music Hub we are also working on a free 'School in the Cloud'. It is designed to operate in rural areas. E-learning is one of the most important aspects of educations’ future. Computers will help the learners and teachers. It is all part of the aim of the Thusong Community Centre. When the Casterbridge Music Development Academy (CMDA) opened its doors in 2010, the idea was to provide a platform for local children, especially from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, to develop an interest in music and the performing arts: an idea that we hoped would impact their lives positively. The result has been phenomenal. The CDMA has performed at the Innibos Laeveld Nasionale Kunstefees, Lowveld Community Orchestra Ilizwi, a jazz musical based in 1950's Sophiatown, at the World Economic Forum in Cape Town, at the BOE Nedbank Arena Waterfront, competed in songwriting competitions and performed alongside many other top South African bands. This festival, with its focus on youth development is unique in South Africa and is made possible with the support of SA's top musicians. The members must be aged 12 years

and above and still at school. In the orchestra, adults participate for a fee. It attracts members from different socio-economic backgrounds, races, religions etc. The aim is to integrate Lydenburg into the orchestra, with the brass section from Pienaar, part of the string section from Lydenburg all integrated with adults and students from White River and Nelspruit. Mr Themba Netshisira, the Music Hub teacher at the Thusong Centre, is very excited by the number of learners that have already come for classes. “This is only the beginning of great things,” he continued. They are still looking for someone who can teach base guitar and lead guitar (phone Themba at 078

Eid al-Adha "Festival of the sacrifice", / Feast of the Sacrifice is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year. It honors the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his promised son, Ishmael (Ismail) as an act of submission to God's command, before God then intervened, through his angel Jibra'il and informs him that his sacrifice has already been accepted. The meat from the sacrificed animal is preferred to be divided into three parts. The family retains one third of the share; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the remaining third is given to the poor and needy. Wikipedia - Source

OLICE confirmed on Tuesday that three suspects were arrested in a farm attack case. The suspects can be linked Ppositively to the attack and the weapons used were found

in their possession. It is possible that one of the farm workers was involved and that it is an inside job. Mr Alan (57) and Mrs Estelle (58) Bullen were attacked on Friday 18 September on their farm in the Badfontein area, outside Lydenburg. They are well-known in the Badfontein area and the Lydenburg community. Neighbors of the couple alerted the policeThe attack and gruesome way she was burned with an iron on her body sent shockwaves through the whole town throughout the weekend. According to the police report Mr Bullen went outside to close the gate just after 19:00 on their farm. His wife was still in the house. He was

suddenly approached by about seven unknown males who pointed firearms at him. They tied Mr Bullen up with a rope to a tractor and went inside the house. Allegedly the suspects found her and demanded the keys to the safe. She told them that the keys were with her husband and they started to burn her with a warm iron. Both of them were seriously injured. Other suspects went out and brought Mr Bullen inside the house and demanded the safe keys. He gave them the keys and they opened the safe. They stole an undisclosed amount of cash, two rifles, 1 x .38 special revolver and a pellet gun. They were both admitted to Nelspruit Medi Clinic and according to reports Mr Bullen was released on Sunday but by the time of going to press Mrs Bullen was still hospitalized. She was still being treated for the burn wounds. The police are still investigating the case.

SENIOR citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:The melody out of music, the pride out of appearance, the courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, the commitment out of marriage, the responsibility out of

parenthood, the togetherness out of the family, the learning out of education, the service out of patriotism, The Golden Rule from rulers, the nativity scene out of cities, the civility out of behaviour, The refinement out of language, the dedication out of employment, the prudence out of spending,The ambition out of achievement or God out of government and school. And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism. We remember all those soldiers, of every race and religion, who

have fought and died for our country. YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!I'm the life of the party...... even if it lasts until 8 p.m.I'm very good at opening childproof caps.... with a hammer. I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying. I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere. I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg. I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps. I'm a walking storeroom of facts.....I've just lost the key to the storeroom door.Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life! Spread the laughter, Share the cheer, Let's be happy, While we're here! This wonderful story was sent to us - AC

Concerned reader writes: On Saturday, 12 September a lot of residents were disappointed because “someone” at Home Affairs in Lydenburg changed the office hours. A piece of paper without an official stamp or proper signature on it was on display notifying they were closed on this day in question. Some people who stood there were outraged because they came all the way from Limpopo to pick up official documents after speaking to a lady at Home Affairs the previous day (Friday) and confirmed collection for Saturday. Nobody knew about the date changes because it was not publicised. Is this also a case of making up your own office hours while getting paid for the ones that you stay at home?

Do employees at Home Affairs determine their own hours?

THE numbers of fish in the oceans have halved since 1970, in a plunge to the "brink of collapse" caused by over-fishing and other threats, the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) conservation group said recently.Populations of some commercial fish stocks, such as a group including tuna, mackerel and bonito, had fallen by almost 75%, says a study by the WWF and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).Marco Lambertini, director general of WWF International, said mismanagement was "pushing the oceans to the brink of collapse"."There is a massive decrease in species critical to both the ocean ecosystem and food

OUR ENVIRONMENT/ ONS OMGEWINGsecurity for billions," he said. The report said populations of fish, marine mammals, birds and reptiles had fallen 49% between 1970 and 2012. For fish alone, the decline was 50%.The analysis said it tracked 5829 populations of 1 234 species, such as seals, turtles and dolphins and sharks. It said the ZSL data sets were almost twice as large as past studies.Damage to coral reefs and mangroves, which are nurseries for fish, added to problems led by over-fishing. Other threats included coastal development, pollution and climate change - which is raising temperatures and making waters more acidic. The study said the world's fishing fleets were too big and supported by subsidies totalling $14-billion to $35-billion a year.Later this month, governments are to adopt new UN sustainable development goals, which including ending over-fishing and destructive fishing practices by 2020 and restoring stocks "in the shortest time feasible". IT looks like Toyota has gotten pretty serious about its CH-R concept it unveiled last year as they unveiled a production-ready rendering of the CH-R concept. Except this time around it looks like Toyota has added two more doors instead of the original three-door concept in order to gain wide spread acceptance over a larger audience. Toyota will be using this more production ready version of the CH-R to further gain reactions from Toyota’s target market.Much like Volkswagen has it’s MQB platform for a shared modular system for front wheel drive hot hatches and wagons, Toyota’s New Global Architecture Platform (TNGA) aims to trim down Toyota’s platform and engine portfolio by building multiple vehicles off the same platform worldwide. Modular doesn’t necessarily mean boring as this TNGA platform sports a rigid body, a lower center of gravity and reduced body movement.

Up front there’s a large and bold monochrome bumper which fits underneath what Toyota calls a “wing graphic.” At the tail ends of the wings are jewel-like LED headlamps. The side profile of the CH-R screams muscular with deep cuts along the lower door line and bulging wheel arches. Out back it looks like boomerang taillights are all the rage for 2016 (see Honda Civic) as the CH-R sports a pair. The rear glass is steeply raked and the integrated fog lamps, rear faux diffuser and relatively small real estate out back makes the CH-R look slim and athletic.Powering the CH-R will be a mix of battery, gasoline and electric motors in a hybrid system. Toyota also hopes to increase thermal efficiency of the engines up to an acceptable 40 percent.Toyota hasn’t outright said it but they’re focusing mainly on the European market so don’t expect this CH-R to make its way across the Atlantic. Seriously Toyota, we’d love to have this crossover bounding across our outlet parking lots sooner rather than later.Source: The Internet

LIGHTER, more frugal and agile. The eleventh generation Opel Astra made its global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show.Opel South Africa confirms the new Astra will arrive locally in 2016. According to Opel: "The new Astra is up to 200kg lighter than the outgoing model, mainly due to its completely new vehicle architecture. The result of this weight reduction is improved agility and driving comfort. The new Astra is more fun to drive than ever before."Powering the new Astra is a range of engines with outputs from 70kW to 147kW. The automaker's new 1.4 Ecotec direct injection turbo makes its debut in the Astra. The four-cylinder unit is tuned to deliver 92kW or 110kW and up to 245Nm, the latter output will be available in SA.Depending on the output, consumption in the combined cycle decreases down to a claimed 4.9 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions of 114g/km.The three-cylinder 77kW 1.0 Ecotec is the most frugal petrol engine in the line-up, with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.2 liters/100km and emissions of 96g/km.The styling of the new Astra is an evolution of the Opel design philosophy ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’. At the front it has a new double-grille bar and radiator, new bumper and LEDs.With a total length of 4.37m, the newcomer is almost 5cm shorter than the outgoing model while its height has been reduced by 2.5cm to 1.48m. The new Astra currently already boasts a drag coefficient of 0.285.Rear-seat passengers benefit from 35mm more legroom. The cockpit also embodies the automaker's efficiency maxim - the number of knobs and buttons has been reduced to a minimum and most infotainment functions transferred to the touch screen. The automaker's IntelliLink infotainment system is located in the middle of the centre console.According to Opel: "The new generation AGR (campaign for Healthier Backs) certified premium ergonomic seats offer additional comfort with their unique combination of side bolster adjustment, massage and memory function as well as ventilation.”Wheels24.co.za

AROUND three years ago we reported on the impending discontinuation of lead replacement petrol (LRP) in South Africa, much to the dismay of older-car owners. At the time, there was no deadline for the phase out, but it was expected that LRP would become completely extinct by 2017. However, it now seems that South Africa’s petrol suppliers are backtracking on original plans. We contacted a few of the bigger petroleum companies to find out what the future holds for LRP locally, and all said that as long as customers are buying, they’ll continue selling.Shell, which currently carries LRP at 396 stations in South Africa, says: “The general demand for LRP is declining inland as well as in coastal regions. But the final decision will be determined by customer demand as well as car-park evolution.”Sasol’s response was similar. “Current supply is dictated by demand. At this stage we continue to monitor market demand for the product, and we will make a decision based on our findings.”Sasol carries 93 octane LRP in the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo; and 95 LRP in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. The only definitive way of determining which cars require LRP fuel is to open the engine and see what type of valve seats are in the cylinder head, but a general rule of thumb is, if it has a catalytic converter in the exhaust system it’s safe to use unleaded. Almost all petrol-powered cars newer than 1996 are unleaded compatible.Drivers of cars which require LRP can generally be divided into two categories: inner city and rural. City-based LRP cars are often regarded as classics and are sometimes the second or third car in a household. These owners can either mix lead replacement additives to unleaded petrol, or go through the expensive procedure of converting their cylinder heads with hardened valve seats.Owners of fuel-sensitive vehicles in rural areas on the other hand, generally drive older model cars and bakkies based on affordability. While they too can use additives, this process can be expensive and inconvenient, especially with frequent, small rand value top-ups. It’s for this reason that LRP is more widely available in rural regions.Star MotoringED: I am aware of only one LRP supplier, Total, at Steers in Lydenburg.

THERE is a rumour doing its rounds, much to the dismay of purists, that Nissan is planning to expand its Z-car line-up to include at least one crossover vehicle. That seems all the more plausible now, following the reveal of Nissan's radically-styled Gripz Concept. Inspired by classic rally cars like the Safari Rally winning 240Z of the early seventies, as well as by simple racing bicycles, Nissan says this concept heralds a "new breed of sporty compact crossover" for today's youth. Then again, it could simply be nothing more than a radical concept car showing off some design cues that could make their way into future models, in toned down form, perhaps even the next-generation Juke in this case. The concept blends a sports car-like silhouette

with the higher ride height that you'd need to get to more adventurous destinations.Nissan hasn't released any power or performance figures, but does mention a hybrid powertrain that mates a petrol engine to the Nissan Leaf's electric motor. The vehicle has four-doors and no B-pillar, making it

easy to enter and exit the 2+2-seat cabin. But before you set off, just beware that Big Brother is most definitely watching. The headlights incorporate cameras that record every journey, sharing your road adventures with your online friends around the world, in real time via a live internet stream.iol.motoring.co.za

October Gardening TipsBY the time October comes, the much-loved South African summer is well underway, and while it is getting warmer, there is a lot to do in the garden to get it looking its best. Here is a list of the top things that should be taken care of in the garden during October:Look after your lawn: If you had laid down lawn dressing during the early spring months, your lawn should be looking green and lush by the time October arrives. To cater for the warmer weather, let your lawn grow a little longer, as the length will help shade the roots and this will reduce the amount of water it will require. If the new growth has a yellow tinge, then fertilise it with some 5:1:5 and water well after fertilising. Adding a bit of colour: To ensure that your summer garden is full of flowers and bursts of colour – now is the time to sow seeds and plant seedlings. Easy flowers to grow from seeds include alyssum, asters, celosia, cosmos, lobelia marigolds, nasturtiums, zinnias and sunflowers. Summer seedlings to plant now include impatiens, begonias, bedding dahlias, dianthus, gazanias, petunias, salvias and verbena. Also, to keep

your summer-flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas, hibiscus and fuchsias in good form, it is a good time to fertilise them now with 3:1:5 of 5:1:5 fertiliser. Be sure to prune back any spring-flowering shrubs that have faded, and you can also fertilise these, such as camellias and azaleas, with 5:1:5 to keep them looking at their best.Delicious summer vegies: This is the time to sow seeds of summer vegetables into prepared beds, such as carrots, beetroots, beans, pumpkin, marrows, cucumbers, rocket and radishes for example. For tomatoes, eggplant, chillies, green peppers and lettuce – it is easier to sow the seeds into seed trays and wait until they germinate before you plant them into the beds, or even simpler, buy already grown seedlings from your nursery. Putting a thin layer of straw over the sown seeds will help prevent the beds from drying out in the warm weather.Rose-coloured glasses: It is during October when your roses should be putting on a marvellous display! It is wonderful to decorate your home with roses that have been picked from your own garden, however, remember not to pick more than 50% of the roses off any particular rose plant as this will seriously set the plant back. Don’t

worry too much about aphids – they are not harmful to your roses and provide great food for ladybirds and birds alike. Water your roses at least twice a week in the warm weather. – Antonella Desi
