Title: For a rediscovery of India(As Prime Minister Modi returns to power, he must swear bythe Indian civilisational ethos)
Context: The definitive nature of the Bharatiya Janata Party’svictory in the 17th general election marks an unmistakableinflection point in the journey of the Republic.

If the 16th general election in 2014 catapulted the BJP as theprimary pole of Indian politics, relegating the Congress to adistant second, 2019 establishes it as the overarchinghegemon. For good reasons, this result is being viewed as anendorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s persona, andhis imprint on this victory is distinctive.
But it will be a folly to ignore the underlying structural reasonsthat made this victory possible, and its sweep so deep andwide. It takes strong personalities to popularise an idea, but itis those ideas that outlive personalities that define the courseof a people or a nation.

The outcome, hence, must be understood as an electoralendorsement of Hindutva, or Hindu nationalism, the creedthat guided the BJP and its forebears for nearly a centurysince Vinayak Damodar Savarkar wrote the treatise by thesame title.
Southern States, barring Karnataka, remainedunimpressed by Hindutva, but the BJP made impressiveinroads in West Bengal and Odisha, proving its potencyeven in areas where linguistic, political and cultural factorshave historically been unfavourable to it.

To urge the BJP to uphold secular ideals or to protect theintegrity of existing institutions may amount todemanding an abandonment of its very core beliefs.Gaining the trust of all citizens will be a necessaryprerequisite for Mr. Modi to drive India’s continuingjourney to become a global leader.
It is only reasonable that the government and the PrimeMinister be asked to live up to the promise theycontinuously make — ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas (with all, development for all)’.

Final Words The Hindu hopes that Mr. Modi’s second term will be
more inclusive than the first, which was marred byarrogant pride and hateful prejudice. We extend ourcongratulations and wishes to him and his party.
