It is interesting to me that the term “computer” was first recorded as being used in 1613 and was originally used to describe a human who performed calculations. This was the primary use of the term until the end of the 19th century. As of June, Japan’s FUGAKU super computer took the top spot that was formerly held by SUMMIT at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Like Summit, Fugaku is definitely NOT a desktop computer; it is bigger than multiple tennis courts and took six years to develop at a cost $1 billion. It uses enough electricity to power 11,000 homes and takes thousands of gallons of water per minute to keep it cool. Fugaku is almost three times as powerful as Summit and has a top theoretical speed of 416 Petaflops. That was a new term to me. This massive computer can do 416,000 trillion calculation per second, which makes it millions of times more powerful than the typical laptop! To put in another way, you would need every person on earth to do a calculation every second for 20 months to match what Fugaku can do in a heartbeat. The Fugaku super computer is housed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan, and is already being used to analyze very complex coronavirus data. This is all very interesting…you might say…but what does it have to do with Marklund and our mission (promise) to make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities? Our technology has drastically changed over the past 65 years since nurse Claire Haverkampf founded us in December 1954 but no matter how many “upgrades” we may make to our technology it will always require caring people…to make our promise a reality. We have faced unprecedented challenges since the beginning of the pandemic in mid-March and you have risen to face each one. Thank you for the care and dedication that you bring to those we serve…every day. God bless you! Gil

Effective Aug. 13, 2020, Marklund will no longer have a specific Bereavement Policy. Any employee who needs to take time off to plan/attend a funeral for a loved one or friend will need to use PTO (approved by supervisor through ADP). We will no longer require staff to show proof of the circumstances.

Since the definition of “immediate” family has evolved with various types of blended families and other circumstances, it has become difficult for supervisors to decide if a requested leave falls within the Bereavement Policy requirements. Marklund’s PTO policy allows for staff to take time off for any personal reason and will include this kind of situation as well.

If you are in a position that does not accrue PTO, your absence (per your supervisor’s approval) will not be counted against you and will be unpaid.

BEREAVEMENT POLICY UPDATE

Best of Luck to Development Instructor Bridgette, in OT school! We will miss you and are all rooting for you on this next adventure! Sincerely, - Your Marklund Family and the Marklund Therapy Team

Time in the kitchen has become a favorite

pastime for everyone. Last week, Bloomingdale

guys baked delicious fresh zucchini bread bars

while Geneva residents had fun mixing-up

homemade guacamole with veggies from their

Citrus-Garlic Flank Steak Marinate steak in a tangy mixture of orange juice, lime juice, cilantro, oregano, cumin, and

red pepper for a flavorful and easy grilled main dish.

Ingredients:

1 1 lb. lean flank steak 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1/4 cup fresh orange juice about 1 orange 2 tbsp. lime juice about 1 lime 1/2 jalapeno finely diced 2 tbsp. cilantro chopped 3 cloves garlic minced 1/2 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp oregano 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper

Directions: 1. Combine the oil, orange juice, lime juice, jalapeno, cilantro, garlic, cumin, oregano,

sea salt, and freshly cracked pepper together in a large zip lock bag. Seal and squish

well with hands to mix the marinade. Add the flank steak and place into the

refrigerator to marinate for 6 hours.

2. Remove the flank from the refrigerator 20 minutes prior to cooking. Heat a grill pan

over medium high heat and coat with cooking spray. Add the flank steak to the HOT

grill pan and cook 3-4 minutes then flip and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes for

medium rare; or until you have reached your desired degree of doneness. Remove

from the grill pan and place on a cutting board to rest for 5 minute prior to slicing

against the grain. Serve and enjoy.
