Dr. Anton Bergant graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia on June 25, 1981. The topic of his BSc Thesis was: Treatise of hydraulic transient phenomena in hydroelectric power plants with Francis turbines. On April 18, 1985 he completed his MSc studies in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ljubljana. The topic of his MSc Thesis was: Unsteadiness and vibrations in hydraulic systems. On December 9, 1985 he successfully passed an exam at the State Committee for Industry and Civil Engineering and became Professional Engineer. He successfully defended his Doctoral Thesis at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana on May 6, 1993. The topic of his thesis was: Transient cavitating flow in piping systems. From January to May 1987 he was visiting research fellow at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom specializing numerical modelling of hydraulic transients in piping systems. From April to June 1995 and from February to April 1997 he was postdoctoral fellow at the University of Adelaide, Australia conducting research on transient cavitating flow in pipelines. On May 28, 2009 he was appointed as Associate Professor for Fluid Mechanics at the University of Ljubljana. On March 30, 2010 he was elected as Associate Member at the Slovenian Academy of Engineering. He has been employed with Litostroj Industries since 1980, except from October 1989 to January 1993 when he was employed as research officer with the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is currently employed full-time with company Litostroj Power d.o.o., Ljubljana and part-time with Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Antonio Patricio de Sousa Betamio de Almeida Emeritus Professor, Full Professor (Ret.) Mr. Ivo Pothof (PhD, MSc, 1972) is an industrial hydrodynamics specialist at Deltares. Mr. Pothof has joined Delft Hydraulics (currently Deltares) in 1997. He is specialized in fluid transients, optimal control of pipeline systems and air-water pipe flows. He has worked on innova-tive solutions for the water industry in the Netherlands and abroad, like the application of booster pumping stations in the urban drainage sys-tem of Amsterdam. He has experience with development of numerical algorithms for fluid transients (WANDA software), commissioning fire fighting systems, field measurements and troubleshooting at chemical plants. He has written guidelines on fluid transients in Dutch standard NEN 3650 – 2006: Requirements for pipeline systems. Mr. Pothof is a member of the Technical Committee of the Pressure Surges Confer-ence Series and affiliated with Delft University of Technology, depart-ment of Sanitary Engineering. He has training experience as a lecturer at Deltares Academy (Hydrodynamics in Pipeline Systems) and as a guest lecturer at Delft University of Technology and UNESCO-IHE. He has published in various peer-reviewed journals and numerous conference proceedings. Mr. Pothof co-ordinates the strategic R&D of Deltares on Renewable Energy and Energy-efficiency. He graduated in 1995 in Systems and Control Theory at the University of Twente, faculty Applied Mathematics. He was awarded the KIVI-NIRIA price on Systems and Control theory with his graduation thesis on optimal placement of pressure transducers in a drinking water network.

Arris Tijsseling received an MSc in Applied Mathematics (1986) and a PhD in Civil Engineering (1993) from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. He worked on fluid-structure interaction in pipe systems from 1986 to 1993 at Delft Hydraulics and Delft University, and from 1993 to 1999 at the University of Dundee in Scotland. Since 1999 Tijsseling has been an Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research interests include water hammer, column separation, fluid-structure interaction and the history of science.

Originally worked for engineering consultants, principally in the field of power generation with much of that in hydropower and pumped storage. Professor Stephen Beck is a graduate of Bath University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he was offered a post at Fermilab in Chicago where he developed software to control anti-protons.

He was awarded his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Univer-sity of Sheffield. The topic was the stability of ventilation systems in nuclear power stations which involved fluid mechanics, waves in pipes and power fluidics.

After several postdoctoral jobs (on fluidics, modelling waves in oil drillstrings and high temperature heat exchangers) he was offered a lectureship in thermodynamics at the department. He became a senior lecturer in 2002. In 2012 he was promoted to a personal chair.Professor Beck has been working on flow measurement, leak detec-tion, leaks from pipes, leaky gaskets (spot the theme), heat transfer from radiators and renewable energy. His interest in energy and teach-ing have combined to make him one of the main investigators on the (£9.3M) Doctoral Training Centre on energy and the environment.He is interested in quality enhancement of teaching and has served as Director of Undergraduate Studies and the Director of Learning and Teaching Development for the Faculty of Engineering. He is currently Faculty Director of Learning and Teaching, coordinating learning throughout the Engineering Faculty.

For reasons unknown to even himself, he is also interested in various forms of committee work both within the University and for the Institu-tion of Mechanical Engineers, where he is on the Academic Assess-ment Committee and the Academic Standards Committee, accrediting other Mechanical Engineering departments.

Since 2006, Professor Bryan Karney has served as Chair, Division of Environmental Engineering and Energy Systems. In 2009, Professor Karney became Associate Dean, Cross-Disciplinary Programs, providing leadership to the newly formed Cross-Disciplinary Programs Office. He is a professor in the Environmental Section of the Department of Civil Engineering at U of T.

Professor Karney’s research interests reside in the design, analysis, operation and optimization of various water resource and energy systems. He specializes in the design and analysis of water distribution systems, with interests in infrastructure renewal, transient and water hammer analysis and system optimization. Professor Karney also studies the implication of climate change to system design and performance, and particularly energy use.

Along with his passion for research, Professor Karney has a passion for teaching. Student support earned him a Faculty Teaching Award in 2001-2002, the highest teaching honour awarded by the Faculty. He was also one of 10 lecturers selected for Television Ontario’s (TVO) Best Lecturer Competition in 2007—an annual contest that shines the spotlight on Ontario’s most engaging and intellectually stimulating post-secondary lecturers. In 2009 he received the Northrop Frye award for excellence in combining teaching and research.
