Worshiping Officially the first day of summer is June 21. Okay, but considering that daytime temperatures have already been in the triple digits, I think it is safe to say that summer is already here. Just the other day my neighbor in an effort to cut down on his utilities bills was searing a couple steaks on the sidewalk! Yep, summer is here.

Summer means summer vacations. Unless you are retired, then you don’t take vacations, you take trips! At least that is what I have been told. Either way, for many people it is time to get away for a little recreation. Or as they say in England, it is time to take a holiday, no doubt a jolly one.

Have you ever thought about the definitions of those three words? Consider:

Vacation: A period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel.

Recreation: Refreshment by means of some pastime, agreeable exercise, or the like.

Holiday: A time or period of exemption from any requirement, duty, assessment, etc.

Sometimes, also called holidays. Chiefly British: a period of cessation from work or one of recreation; vacation.

The truth of the matter is we all need time to rest and find refreshment. We all need time to change the routine, and mix things up a bit. I suppose that you could do that at home and not travel. I find that incredibly hard, if not impossible, to do. When you stay home, all those activities that need to be down are staring you in the face, beckoning you to get busy. Time away, even if not far away, has the advantage in that you cannot do those chores.

In reality, a vacation, that is time for rest and refreshment are central to how God made us. There were six days of creation and “so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” (Genesis 2:2) When He was establishing Israel He said: “For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of Sabbath rest, holy to the Lord.” (Exodus 31:15) We find this to be true even in the life of Jesus. On one occasion he said to his disciples; “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31)

If you dig a bit deeper into the meaning of recreation, it can also be read re-creation; to be made anew or to be renewed…re-created. If you dig into holiday you would discover that it originally meant holy day; a day that is set aside to honor God. In reality vacations/trips are an important part of how God created us. Time away gives an opportunity to be re-created. Time to honor Him by taking care of us – His special creation.

I pray that you find time this summer for a vacation, some recreation, your own holiday.

In Christ,

Pastor Ron

Growing

Risen Savior Sunday School News VeggieTales Sunday School Join Bob and Larry for Bible-based lessons packed with Scripture. Children will enjoy upbeat, engaging experiences along with brief VeggieTales video clips during Sunday School this summer. Gratitude Kids will learn from Madame Blueberry’s example (and the Israelites too) that being greedy makes you grumpy—but a thankful heart is a happy heart! Courage Children will also learn that with God, they can have courage to do the right thing. Kids will discover that they can rely on God for his help—just like Queen Esther did. Sunday School is held each week during the 10:10 am Worship service. All children 3 years old through fifth grade are welcome to come learn about Jesus and grow in love for Him! Please sign in at the school office near the playground.

Caring Ministries Team In May we celebrated Older American's Month, 50 years ago President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act into law. The focus of the Act is how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. Look around Risen Savior any day of the week and you will see examples of this with our older members. Our older adults in this congregation are making a difference, let them know you support them.

The Perfect Place A SOCIAL DESTINATION FOR SENIORS NEEDING DAY CARE AND A RESPITE FOR CAREGIVERS.

Flo has somewhere to be every Monday. She is welcomed with a short devotion followed by a time of introduction and sharing with the other participants and volunteers. She laughs as we all do chair exercises; play bingo and deal cards. The repetitive nature of the activities gives her a sense of competence and security. A snack is provided and once a month there is musical entertainment.

Flo is driven by her daughter to The Perfect Place located on the campus of Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Sun Lakes. We are a nonprofit faith based adult care center. Our volunteers are knowledgeable of Alzheimer’s, dementia, developmental disabilities, and various adult neurological challenges. Most of us have had a loved one for which we were a caregiver. We enjoy what we do.

Missions

Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) All women are invited to the next LWML meeting which will be Thursday, June 11th, at 1:00 pm in The Pathway Center Conference Room. Our featured speaker will be Pastor Artigas of the "Spanish Mission Ministry". We will learn how that ministry is reaching children and families with the message of saving faith in Jesus Christ in our area. If you would like a ride, please call Louann Savolt at 480-822-0513.

June 7th will be our monthly Mite Box Sunday. Please look for the table in the narthex and drop off your donations there. Please take a box for yourself or a family member. Maybe you know someone who might have been a member of an LWML group years ago and would remember having one then. She would probably be thrilled to see one again in her home and could make small donations. It might bring back wonderful memories and stories that she has long since put "in storage". An elderly man or woman might love seeing the cute little "Mite Box Church" in their home and enjoy putting coins in it!

The 36th LWML National Convention will be June 25th – 28th in Des Moines, Iowa.

We do NOT meet in July and August. We look forward to getting together in September! Let's all pray for our country and for Christians around the world. Many are being persecuted and killed for their faith in Jesus Christ. We must be vigilant in never stopping to get the gospel to our neighbors and throughout the world in any way we can. Look for information in the July and August Newsletters about brave people who are working to save souls.

Lutheran Braille Workers The Braille workers are taking a summer break for the months of June, July and August. If you would like more information, please call Pat Bibler at 480-895-8788.

Piece Maker Quilters Our quilters meet every Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm and we love having new members! The Domestic Abuse Center, the vets and House of Hope are also recipients of our quilts.
