Masks

By the end of the month we will once again see the painted faces and costumes. Some will be cute and others a bit scary. When every hair is in place, the makeup done just right and the costume is perfect, they will hit the streets. Yes, by the end of October we will have seen our fair share of rabid football fans with blocks of cheese on their heads and faces painted in team colors…oh wait you thought I meant the children who will head out for Halloween. Well I suppose that will happen as well. Some will dress up as super heroes while others will be Disney princesses. Each child for a few hours will be someone else. They apply the make up or pull down the mask and their true identity is hidden, if only for a time. Adults can wear masks as well; they are just harder to spot. Oh, we don’t apply makeup or cover our face with some plastic representation of someone else. No, adults are much more subtle than that. When you greet someone and they ask how you are doing, you put on the mask of the happy retiree, living the good life. You force a smile shake the other person’s hand warmly and go along with the mask you wear. Children wear masks to exercise their imagination. Adults put on mask to cover up what is really going on inside of them. We wear them because when we look at everyone else they all seem to have their life together. Did it ever occur to you that they are simply putting on a mask just like you? Sure they look happy and carefree, of course their kids are wildly successful, and obviously every relationship they have is a solid 10! When in reality some days it is hard to get out of bed, their second child is going through a divorce, and they hardly speak to their siblings. Perhaps we even try to hide from God what is going on in our life. Consider what God said in I Samuel 16:7 “…People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God knows what is really going on inside of you and the pain you may be going through. Take off the mask and get real with him. While you are at it why not get real with the people you are close to as well. Consider what the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4; “…the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” Leave the masks to the children on Halloween and the overzealous football fan. Be real with God and with one another and you will be surprised on the love you feel from both.

Ignite Confirmation Ministry

Ignite Confirmation Ministry Has a New Home!

Due to fall break, there will be No Ignite Confirmation on October 2nd, 9th, and 16th. We will resume on Sunday, October 23rd. Ignite is a place where faith is formed and hearts are changed.

This year, our Ministry Action Team’s goal was to create a comfortable environment where God’s Word takes root, the Holy Spirit ignites faith and relationships are formed. Volunteers worked to enhance the modular building where youth meet in newly upgraded rooms for times of instruction and fellowship. During instruction, youth gather in large groups for learning with up to 16-20 students and break into small group discussions of 6-8 students. They enjoy spending time together in this new space! Instructional Sessions take place on Sunday mornings at 8:30am followed by Worship at 10:10.

Youth in Grade 7 study the New Testament in the new Ignite Room.

Grades 8-12 meet in the Youth Room for a study called “Lutheran Living”.

Students in Grade 6 gather in The Perfect Place to learn about the Old Testament.

Many thanks to leaders who contributed to the team effort: Bill Pauley who coordinated painting, carpet cleaning and installation of new tile floors.

Steve Hudnall who ensured that technology was up and running.

Kathleen Newman who selected the color scheme for paint and tile.

Ignite Ministry Action Team Pastor Mark Hoffmann, Ken Loop, Jenna Ricketts and Shelley Nelson who created the project plan, designed the space and decorated the rooms.

Tom Kish who installed the metal walls.

Brenda Keiner who assembled the basketball arcade game and repaired the bumper pool table.

Fellowship Committee who covered the cost of the ping pong table, bumper pool table and Double Shot Basketball arcade game.

Sellers on Craig’s List who were delighted for their belongings to be used by our youth and were willing to deliver.

The Perfect Place Ministry for sharing space so that youth in Grade 6 have a dedicated room to meet.

Youth gather around the ping pong table for small group discussion and activities related to the New Testament Bible study.

The Youth Room has been upgraded with a fresh coat of paint, carpet cleaning and new décor. Youth in Grades 8-12 gather for their study called “Lutheran Living”.

The newly designed Youth Room accommodates large group learning as well as small group discussions and space to hang out. If you have questions or would like to receive information about the Confirmation program, Contact Shelley Nelson at [email protected].

Small Group Bible Studies Adult Forum - Led by Pastor Harold Teuscher The series of “The Intersection of Church & State” continues until October 16th at which time the following will begin. Next year is the 500th anniversary of the nailing of 95 Thesis (statements) to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, by a Monk named Martin Luther. Many tourists from around the world will travel to Wittenberg to celebrate this event as the birth of the protestant church. Each year many protestant churches celebrate this event on the Sunday nearest October 31. During October, we will look at two new videos on the life of Martin Luther & his life-threatening confrontation with the leaders of the medieval European church over his clarion call that salvation is available to everyone – free & universal – as a gift of God’s magnificent grace because of Jesus’ suffering, death, & resurrection to pay the ransom for our sins.

In this Bible study we will examine the life & times of this religious reformer. From his humble beginnings in Germany to his tireless work of translating the Bible into the language of the people, Martin Luther inspired a Reformation that reverberates throughout Christendom to this day. Join us each Sunday at 8:45am in the Fellowship Hall for one hour with Pastor Teuscher as our leader. Two new Sunday morning adult Bible studies have started ---

The Gospel According to John

and

The Gospel According to Luke Each of these 13-week studies will cover the entire book of one of the Gospels, with a focus on the book’s background, message, and application to our lives. Participants can purchase a best-selling study guide/workbook for the class and home study, which includes the complete text of the Gospel, commentary and study notes for the scripture, and questions leading us deeper into our understanding of Jesus.

If you are interested in gaining a deeper knowledge of scripture, one of these classes will be perfect for you. The classes meet each Sunday morning in the Conference Room and are taught by Dr. Barry Ritchie. See below to decide which class time is the best fit for your Sunday morning worship schedule. So that we can get an accurate count, please let Barry know which class you’ll be attending by contacting him either by phone at 480-839-1382 (leave a message if there’s no answer) or email him at [email protected]. See you there!

At 8:40 AM each Sunday morning: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel of John was written to focus your attention on Jesus and what He has done for you. The Gospel of John focuses on Jesus as the Word, the Messiah, and the Son of God – the Word made flesh to bring the gift of salvation to all people. As Christians, we too need to focus on Jesus, the One who offers us salvation by grace through our faith in Him.

Risen Savior Lutheran Church 7

At 10:10 AM each Sunday morning: The Gospel According to Luke

The Gospel of Luke was written to spread and defend the Good News about Jesus to the entire world. This Gospel speaks to people unfamiliar with the Jewish background of Jesus and the apostles, showing that Jesus indeed is the Savior of all humanity. Luke helps us understand and communicate to each other – and to an unbelieving and sometimes hostile world – that Jesus truly came to reach everyone: rich and poor, Jew and Gentile, devout and unreligious.

Serving

Altar Guild Volunteers Needed God has blessed us with gifts and talents to benefit others. Risen Savior greatly needs altar guild volunteers to help the communion servers at all church services. No experience necessary – training will be provided. Please contact the church office if you are available to help with communion.

Sunday Volunteer Sign-up Process Our Sunday morning volunteer positions are scheduled through Planning Center. We are now using a new tool in Planning Center called Sign-up-Sheets. Rather than the office scheduling you, now you will be able to choose which Sundays/service you’d like to serve.

At the beginning of each month you will receive an email asking you to select which Sundays you would like to serve. These dates will be saved in your Planning Center account and you’ll receive reminder emails as the date approaches. We know that some of our married couples that use Planning Center share the same email address. If you do, here’s what we need ONE of you to do: (One of you may keep your current password, but the other needs to create a new one). Enter the link to get to the sign-in page of Planning Center at https://accounts.planningcenteronline.com. Type in your email address and click the checkmark button. Remember, if you share an email address with another Planning Center user, you must keep track of which account you’re accessing when you are signing up or making changes to your schedule. Another hint: any time you’re in Planning Center you can identify the account by looking at the top right of your browser window. Thank you for your patience as we learn to use this software.

If you have any questions please call Susan Myres at the church office, 480-895-6782.

Fellowship Join us for coffee and donuts in-between services on the patio. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and to sign up and serve.

Operation Christmas Child is an extension program of Samaritan's Purse of which Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham, is president. Operation Christmas Child has touched the lives of millions of hurting children since 1993 in 130 countries by distributing gift-filled shoe boxes and sharing The Good News of Jesus Christ in crisis areas around the world. People need to know that when they get involved in Operation Christmas Child, they are a missionary. Boxes are filled at the local level by contributors, church members or others who want to be involved. After shoeboxes are packed, sent off with prayer for overseas shipment, they travel by plane, boat and truck to countries where local churches receive them with joy. Every gift-filled shoe box provides these churches with an opportunity for evangelism and discipleship in places they otherwise might never be received. As a result, the Gospel is transforming children, families, and entire communities.

Risen Savior has decided to become a part of this ministry. Our campaign will run from October 23rd to November 13th of this year. Boxes and "How to pack a shoe-box" pamphlets can be picked up at the church in the narthex on Sundays after or before each service on 10/23, 10/30, and 11/6. Boxes are due back by 11/13. A check, made out to Samaritan's Purse, or cash for $7.00 is requested for each box packed to pay for shipping and handling. Donations are also accepted. Please make that check out to Risen Savior Lutheran Church and indicate in the memo section of the check - OCC - Operation Christmas Child. There will be an envelope at the display table for check donations.

Risen Savior will also be acting as a relay center for the Southeast valley where other churches will be bringing their boxes to us for transport to another destination. This will happen during the week of November 14th through November 21st. If you would like to help in this operation or between services on the collection Sundays, please contact Suzi Poulsen . Thank you!

Operation Christmas Child boxes and donations are due back at the church by Sunday, November 13th. Any questions call Suzi Poulsen at 1-480-699-3174.

Beyond their joy over the wonderful gifts hidden inside colorful packages, the children who receive “Operation Christmas Child” shoe boxes, are invited to attend a Bible study and discipleship course entitled “The Greatest Journey”. It is 12 weeks of engaging lessons where they learn Bible stories, memorize scripture and discover how they can share the Gospel with family and friends. Samaritan’s Purse trained 370,000 volunteer teachers who taught classes to over 1.2 million boys and girls this last year in 71 languages. Each class has a graduation ceremony and each child is given a New Testament Bible.

Volunteers Needed to Tidy Up Sanctuary Risen Savior is looking for someone to share volunteer duties to tidy up the Sanctuary on alternate Mondays. Duties would include: retrieving last Sunday’s bulletins, News & Notes and readings from the lectern, Pastor’s benches, Elder’s Closet, prayer sheet on altar, reserve five copies of last Sunday bulletins and News & Notes for lost and found table and set out Portal of Prayers at welcome booth and on cabinets in back of church. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the church office at 480-895-6782.

The First Commandment: You shall have no other gods.- What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

The Second Commandment: You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God (or "take the name of the Lord your God in vain).-

What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.

The Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.*

The Fourth Commandment: Honor your father and your mother.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them.*

The Fifth Commandment: You shall not murder.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.*

The Sixth Commandment: You shall not commit adultery.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other.*

The Seventh Commandment: You shall not steal.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor's money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.*

The Eighth Commandment: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way.*

The Ninth Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor's house.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor's inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.*

The Tenth Commandment: You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.- What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor's wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.*

The Close of the Commandments: What does God say about all these commandments? He says, "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments." (Ex. 20:5-6)- What does this mean? God threatens to punish all who break these commandments. Therefore, we should fear His wrath and not do anything against them. But He promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what He commands.*
