Who are we? The Kowethas is a Registered

Charity no. 1065527. Our aim is to

promote the use of the Cornish

language in everyday life. We

publish books and run events to

help people add a bit of Cornish

into their lives. We help

communities to discover the

language, run language taster

sessions and social gatherings. Our

volunteers also teach and learn the

language themselves. Facebook,

newsletters and Twitter are used

to publicise our events.

Discover Heamoor with Taves an Tir

Following the

close of the main

period of activity

in the Lanivet

phase of the

project, Taves an Tir (The Tongue of the Land) has just

moved into Heamoor to begin working with volunteers

to look at place names, family names and history in and

around Heamoor Parish. There’ll be more Heamoor

news here in the next edition of Klew!, but if you want

Listen to the News in Cornish by John Prowse

Did you know that every week there’s a short news programme on the radio? An Nowodhow is a 5-minute news magazine in Cornish that is broadcast on BBC Radio Cornwall at 5pm every Sunday.

If you’re learning Cornish or you simply want to hear what Kernewek sounds like, a good tip is to get hold of the script before the broadcast and use it to follow the reading.

You can download the latest script in both Kernewek and English from the Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek (Cornish Language Fellowship) website at www.cornish-language.org. (The link is at the top of each page.)

The writing team will put the new script on the website each week, probably on Fridays, as soon as it’s been finalised.

BBC TV’s popular ‘Songs of Praise’ comes to St Piran’s Oratory by Steve Penhaligon

I was a little shocked and surprised recently to receive an e-mail from Maga to say that there would be a service to celebrate the recent excavation of St Piran’s Oratory at Perran Sands that coming Saturday (February 7th) and informing me (I expect they would say ‘requesting’) that Keur Heb Hanow would be singing something in Cornish in it – and that it would be filmed by the BBC for possible inclusion in Songs of Praise. Gulp. No pressure.

Although not really relishing the prospect of singing in the open air on what was bound to be a cold, wet and windy day (my natural optimism shining through as always) and then having to share that per-formance with an audience of several, I put a brave face on it as I knew the rest of the group would be keen to sing as always. And they were. So we did.

But actually, I needn’t have worried. It was a lovely bright, sunny, Cornish winter’s day. My nerves dis-appeared and we immersed ourselves in the service, led by the Reverend Caspar Bush and the Right Reverend Chris Goldsmith, Bishop of St Germans with a reading in Kernewek of Psalm 19 by our Grand Bard, Maureen Fuller.

The congregation sang three hymns including one verse specially translated into Cornish and finally, it was our turn.

It had been decided that we would sing Kenneth Pelmear’s arrangement of the ‘Celtic Benediction’ just before the bishop gave the blessing. We had a Cornish translation of the words and afterwards, we all agreed that it had been easier to sing there than we had expected and that we had relaxed and en-joyed ourselves.

Now we’re looking forward to St Piran’s day itself. Bet it’s cold, wet and windy….
