“I’d say half our wins this season have come in our last at bat,” Manor said. “You can call us cardiac but we never seem togetdownmentallyandwehaveconfidencethatwecancome back. Today we were lucky enough to do it again.”Moyerputthefinishingtouchesontherallywithwhatis

defense could get the ball back in, Moyer was being mauled by teammates behind home plate.

“Ironically, I never had one of those when I played little league,” Moyer said. “I’m not sure if we were still down at that point, but I knew every run would count so I just tried to make solid contact.”

As his team heated up offensively, Cook settled in on the mound. He set his opponents down in order in the second and shut them out in the fourth to end the game.

“Jesse has been our mainstay the whole season, he’s done a great job and been very consistent,” Manor said. “He gives us a chance to win and right now, in this tournament, you really have to focus on the game at hand if you want to advance.”

With the victory, 1 SOPS moved on to face 50th Security Forces Squadron, a 12-9 winner against 50th Civil Engineer Squadron, in the second round. Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense drops down to an elimination game in the second round.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — When we join the Air Force, whatever day, whatever age, it “blues” us all the same. The Air Force puts a name to principles already embodiedinus:integrityfirst,servicebeforeselfandexcellenceinallwedo.Itcallstheseprinciplescorevaluesanddefinesthemwithclarity.

Through the mantra of the Airman’s Creed, we become Airmen, wingmen, leaders and warriors.Wearesentoutintothefield,im-parted with a specialty. We are trained the same, tested the same, and on graduation day, handedidenticalcertificatesandgiventhe charge to go forth and be great.

We are great followers, great leaders, great Airmen. Yet, in this moment we are all av-erage. We are no longer beginners, but not yet great.

Average (noun): being of a level (as of intel-ligence) typical of a group, class or series

Average (adjective): not out of the ordinary: common, midway between extremes.Irememberarrivingatmyfirstdutysta-

tion as a deputy crew commander and being in awe of the crew commanders; to me they were great. I remember wondering, “How did they get from where I am to where they are?” Irememberpokingaroundtofindthean-swerandfindingthatitwasalwaysthesame,“Becomethesystemexpert,”whichtranslated

into study, study, study, which translated into hard work, hard work and more hard work. I will admit, at that time in my life, studious wasnotmymiddlename;IfiguredonceIgraduated, I was done with studying.

However, two things happened once I began to heed the advice I sought. First, I became competent in my weapon system knowledge, allowingmetoexecutethemissionwitheaseand understanding. Second, I developed con-fidenceinmyweaponsystemknowledgeand

my ability to convey this knowledge to others. I was slowly building on the foundation the Air Force had laid. As I departed that duty station, I remember feeling that I was not much above average. What was I missing? I wasmissingakeycomponentofexcellenceintheneedtoexhibititinallIdid, andnotonly in some of what I did. At this phase, I understood how to work hard but hadn’t developed the habit.

Consistency is a crucial element and is forged through time as you practice to achieve excellenceinallyoudo.Itistheconsciousdedication to hard work that develops average into above average and our ingrained habit of hard work that transforms above average intogreat.Whenyouexaminethestepsofourleaders or peers who we hail as great, they all begin in much the same way. Yet, quickly after their foundation is laid, you see evidence of their consistent hard work propelling them to greatness. Greatness isn’t reserved for a chosen few and is not freely handed out; it requires a lot of work.

As junior Airmen and company grade offi-cers, we develop our habits of hard work as we prepare ourselves for greater responsibilities. When we are given greater responsibility, our instinct to work hard is innate, allowing our leadershiptobefocusedonhowtoexecutethe mission vice how to do the work.

So what makes average great? I answer this question with a question, “Have you ever met a great person who didn’t work hard?”

Infiscal2011,theAirForcelost16membersinmotor-cycle mishaps. Although riding season is already underway, it is important for riders to not let their guard down. This fiscalyear,therehavealreadybeen15motorcyclefatalitiesin the Air Force.

Maj. Gen. Gregory A. Feest, Air Force chief of safety, stressed the need for riders to have the right skills, the right training and the right attitude on the Air Force Safety Center’s Air Force Rider website.

“Operating a motorcycle is a high-risk activity and takes different skills than driving a four-wheeled vehicle,” said Feest. “Airmen all around the world take the necessary safety precautions and enjoy riding their motorcycles. Unfortunately, every year we lose Airmen to motorcycle accidents. Each motorcycle fatality impacts our units, com-munities and the Air Force family. Most of our accidents are due to a lack of training, poor riding skills and a risky attitude, most notably driving too fast for conditions.”

Remaining aware of your surroundings and wearing all required personal protective equipment outlined in Air Force Instruction 91-207 are vital to motorcycle safety.

“For new riders, the most important thing to remember is that there is no hurry to get out on the road. Take your time practicing in your neighborhood, in parking lots, etc. before you get out. If you are not comfortable, wait,” said Tech. Sgt. Sarah Law, ground safety manager. “Another good idea is to touch base with someone you know who is anexperiencedrider.Experiencedriderslovetosharetipsand lessons learned — just ask.”

Additionally, there are several training vendors to choose from in the local area to take basic through advanced rider courses.

The Air Force recognizes the importance of appropri-ate training and can reimburse any active duty member or Department of Defense civilian who takes any of these courses.

“All they have to do is bring their Motorcycle Safety Foundation course card and their receipt to the wing safety office—thenwehavethemfilloutalocalvoucher,”saidLaw. “Barring any issues with the voucher, it takes about

History QuizWeek of Aug. 9, 2012

Last week’s answer: After achieving initial op-erational capability in December 1993, GPS reached full operational capability on what date? Gen. Joseph W. Ashy, Air Force Space Command commander, reported that GPS reached full operational capability April 27, 1995. The Department of Defense issued a news release for the attainment of full operational capability July 17, 1995.

This week’s question: On Aug. 29, 2003, a Delta IV rocket launched the last of which series of satellites fromSpaceLaunchComplex37atCapeCanaveralAir Force Station, Fla.?

Responses to the quiz questions can be emailed to 50 SW/HO at [email protected]

undergo AFSCN upgrades, leading the way for enterprise modernizations. As new technology was rolled out, PIKE wasoftenthefirsttotestnewequip-ment,configurationsandcapabilities.These included the Control and Status processor, GPS-E enhancement (al-lowing C2 for the GPS constellation), AFSCN link protection system, phased array, highpoweramplifier amongothers.

During its operations, PIKE had vis-ibility of 97 of the 150 plus AFSCN satellites and accomplished more than 180,000 satellite contacts since its in-ception. It also supported more than 300 launches including Titan, Delta

and Atlas missions, enabling the place-ment of today’s modern space capa-bilities. In tribute to PIKE’s operations and history, a number of commentar-ies were shared including one from Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, now 20th Air Force commander, but previously a Colorado Tracking Station detach-ment commander, and Tech. Sgt. Shale Norwitz, PIKE’s current NCO in charge.

Lt. Col. Scott Angerman, 22nd Space Operations Squadron commander, em-phasized the importance and continu-ing mission for PIKE.

“[Col. James Ross, 50th Space Wing commander] has emphasized that the space effects delivered by the 50th Space Wing are foundational to our country’s way of life and military’s asymmetrical advantage,” Angerman said. “The AFSCN is foundational to not just 50th Space Wing operations

and missions but other DOD satellite flyers and national assets. The Colorado Tracking Station has had a trailblazing role in testing and modernizing the AFSCN.”

With the cessation of routine opera-tions and transformation to a testing facility, PIKE will continue to provide asitetocrosschecksatelliteconfigura-tions for on-orbit operations, he said. Colorado Tracking Station will also be critical for contingency fallback and surge capability at the site of the AFSCN primary network node and majority of satellite operations customers.

“As we go forward, PIKE is going to continue to be important,” said Angerman. “It’s [essential] to preserve PIKE’s capabilities for testing, trouble-shooting and contingency operations because we need a place to test technol-ogy in an operational environment.”

tains uninterrupted contact while it tracks satellites directly overhead. This is especially important for us here at New Boston in support of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program mission.”

Project leaders decided to use an inflated dome to protect the antenna due to its reduced signal loss com-pared to a framed structure.

The radome installation was one oftheproject’sfinalelementsandnowallowsengineerstobeginex-tensive system integration and op-erational testing on the apparatus. Tentative plans call for turnover to the Air Force in 2014. Until then, 23 SOPS will continue to use its legacy BOSS-B antenna for taskings from the Air Force Satellite Control Network and other organizations.

This step marks another mile-

stone in the site’s transformation through the years. Operations began at the station in 1960, when Airmen used van-mounted equipment to make contact with satellites. By 1964, New Boston had permanent antennas in place and began dual tracking, telemetry and commanding capabilities. Air Force Space Command assumed control of 23 SOPS in 1987 and the squad-ron replaced its on-site BOSS-A antenna during 2007.

The recent upgrade signals the Air Force’s increasing reliance on the capabilities generated there.“23SOPSisexcitedtobeapart

of this culmination of efforts by the Space and Missile Systems Center, Honeywell and Team BOSS,” said Lt. Col. David Hanson, 23 SOPS commander. “We look forward to commencing operations of this newest generation AFSCN anten-na in 2014. Special thanks to all involved for their dedication and teamwork.”
