Jetstar’s proposed expansion to Nelson has been met with joy from the region’s air travellers.Last week Jetstar announced that Nelson is one of seven regional centres it is look-ing to expand to before the end of this year. Many air travellers expect the competition with Air New Zealand will mean cheaper

prices. The story was first reported in Nel-son by nelsonlive.co.nz, and was met with excitement and relief by many, especially online. The story attracted huge interest on Nelson Weekly’s Facebook page and on a page called “Jetstar into Nelson”, which has been campaigning for the move for several years. The administrator of the page, Martin Daly, a local church pastor, says it now has

screw the regions.”Nelson mayor Rachel Reese was also happy with the announcement, calling it “really exciting”.“Air traffic is really important for us, for the visi-tors coming here, for business travellers and for freight. What I’m looking at is an opportunity to grow the market, rather than cut the market into smaller shares. It’s a really exciting move and certainly a really positive buzz around town about the announcement.”Jetstar announced plans to start flying to re-gional destinations after they bought a fleet of five 50-seat Bombardier Q300 turbo-prop aero-planes.The services are expected to operate to at least four regional destinations initially, with some of those under consideration being Hamilton, Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson and Invercargill. They will fly to Jetstar’s existing destinations

in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Queenstown.Regional fares will go on sale in September with first flights taking off in December.Nelson Weekly has long-reported stories of woe regarding Air New Zealand’s service to Nelson and those stories still hold the paper’s record for the most amount of reader feedback. Dissatisfaction of high prices and poor service were common.Jetstar Group CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka, says they want to bring “real competition” and stimulate regional passenger growth. “When we first started operations in New Zea-land, domestic fares across the country dropped by around 40 per cent, and we expect fares will drop considerably on the regional routes where we’ll operate.” The move by Jetstar follows Kiwi Regional Air-line’s plan to start flying from Nelson this spring and will add competition to Sounds Air, which also flies to Wellington from Nelson.

Snow dump great news for Rainbow: A new snow pump and snow gun, along with a good few weeks of snowfall, are all signs for the start to the ski season at Rainbow. Staff at the ski field have been prepping opening day on July 4 and say it’s looking in fantastic condition and much better than usual for this time of year.

Beatty St fire: A fire that started in a King Salmon-owned storage facility on Wednesday afternoon was lucky

not to have spread to an adjacent building. Three fire engines, a fire rescue truck and a HAZMAT vehicle, at-tended the Beatty St blaze just off Bolt Rd. Senior station officer Brian O’Donnell says, due to the nature of the building and the fact it is attached to another building under a dif-ferent lease, extra fire

appliances were called in to help. “We trans-mitted a second alarm which gives us four pumps instead of the normal two.”

Bird may have tainted water: A bird is the most likely cause of the contamination in Richmond’s new water treatment plant that re-sulted in the water be-ing chlorinated and the Tasman District Coun-cil issuing a warning to Richmond residents to boil their water. The warning was lifted last week.

Two people are “extremely lucky” to have survived a freak accident on Saturday night, af-ter the van they were driving hit a cow and then took out a power pole on the Moutere Highway. The Nelson Fire Service was called out around 9pm to as-sist the Richmond and Appleby crews with the rescue. It is understood a cow escaped from its nearby paddock and was on the road when the van hit it. The male driver of the van was able to get out of the vehicle but a female passenger had to be cut out. Nelson station officer Craig Davies says fire crews used the Jaws of Life and spreaders, and it took more than an hour to free the female passenger. “The power lines were down so they had to wait to be isolated before they could do any work, otherwise you get electrocuted. It was a long, drawn-out extri-

cation.” He says the people in the van were lucky to be alive and, if the power pole was any closer to either side of the vehicle, then they probably would have lost their lives. “The people were extremely lucky, very rarely do you see a van hit a cow and a power pole and not have any fatalities. It was like it was stapled right

through the centre of the van, underneath the van, across the front and over the top.” Both passengers were taken away by ambulance. The female passenger suffered a broken tibia, a split lip and broke some teeth. The cow was killed. Police were at the scene, divert-ing traffic at the Moutere High-way and Redwood Valley Rd intersection.

Police were called to three separate threat incidents on Thursday against government staff at WINZ, ACC and the Nelson City Council, and they’ve had enough.Police are warning that such threats could carry serious consequences with a maximum penalty of seven years im-prisonment.In the first incident, a 51 year old man

threatened a staff member at the Nelson WINZ office. He was arrested for using threatening language and later released with a pre-charge warning. In the second incident, a 26 year old man threatened a staff member at Nel-son City Council. He was arrested for behaving threateningly and also re-leased with a pre-charge warning. In the third incident, a 46 year old man

threatened a staff member at the Nel-son ACC office. He was arrested and charged with threatening to kill and ap-peared in the Nelson District Court last week. Senior Sergeant Shane Miles says any threats against staff at any organisa-tion were taken very seriously. “Anyone who is employed to do a job should not expect to be subject to any sort of threat in the course of their work.”

Construction has started on Nelson’s new velodrome and the Saxton Velodrome Trust is expecting more good news with a charitable trust “close” to announcing a significant contribution to the $1.6million project. Contractors Downer started initial earthworks on the site adjacent to Garin College while Ching Contracting are putting in drains. Trust member Rob Ford says they are delighted the construction has finally started and will be even happier when they receive their latest grant. “We are in negotiations with a lot of funders, so we can’t say much,” Rob says. “But we wouldn’t have started construction if we didn’t have considerable funding and that is close to being announced.”The project is a joint-venture between Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and the trust, with the trust expected to contribute $300,000. The trust’s marketing manager Paul Jennings says they have already received funding from the Mainland Trust and he is optimistic they can reach their target. “Mainland Trust has supplied funding and are keen to continue their support.” Paul says. “We are also looking at further grants, as well as in-kind

contributors and fund raising.”The trust has also set up a give-a-little page on its website saxtonvelodrome.comRob says the velodrome is expected to take another 16 to 20 months to complete and he can’t wait to get on his bike and ride around the 300m track. He says the long build time is needed to allow the material, used to shape the banked track, to settle and compact before it is surfaced.Although the velodrome will be used for competitive cycling, Paul says it is being designed to accommodate a wide range of users. The velodrome will be a community facility that will be suitable for cyclists of all ages, skills and fitness levels.Pauls says the centre of the velodrome is designed for road safety training needs and will provide a safe environment for children to learn how to ride a bike, for elderly people to stay fit, and for rehabilitation after injury or illness. Sport Tasman will also utilise both the velodrome and cycle safety arena in its programmes - the velodrome will be free to use.

Nelson is set for a dramatic in-crease of new businesses – and all in one weekend.Nelson’s first ever Startup Week-end is being hosted by Innovate Nelson, a new facilitator devel-oped by the Nelson City Council, Nelson EDA and NMIT to help foster innovation and entrepre-neurship.Startup weekends have been held all over the world and are sup-ported by internet giant, Google. Innovate Nelson manager Matt Pearcy says the format is proven and he’s looking forward to see what Nelsonians can come up with.“I’ve heard a good quote about it, ‘it was like doing the MBA, but in a weekend’. It’s especially good for small to medium-sized

businesses because you’re often running around doing the day-to-day things and you’re missing that excuse to look up and look at growth and strategy and those sort of things.”The weekend will be held from Friday July 24 to Sunday, July 26. It involves people being sepa-rated into teams and developing an idea into a business before it’s judged. Matt says it’s 52 hours of may-hem. “A lot of startups from these events are still going strong after three months, but the major ben-efit for many attendees is the ex-perience of it.”He says experienced business people, budding entrepreneurs, developers wanting to challenge their skills or designers looking for new ideas, would all benefit from the challenge, which will be

based at NMIT.The Startup weekend is one of two major events to help launch Innovate, which was given the green light to start up in March this year. The other is Co.Starters, a tested international platform to help communities grow local business.

Co.Starters is a nine week pro-gramme which equips aspir-ing entrepreneurs with the tools needed to turn business ideas into action and will be intro-duced by its co-founder, Enoch Elwell, Tuesday night at NMIT.Matt says small business remains one of the fundamental economic

drivers for local economies and job creation. “So we wanted to introduce a programme which narrows the gap between the sup-port this sector receives and the support available for larger busi-nesses.”For more information about Inno-vate, see www.innovatenelson.com

The number of members at the Nelson Suburban Club continues to surge on the back of positive financial data.Last week the club announced it had gone past the 4000 member number, achieving a self-imposed target to reach that figure before the start of July.

In May of this year, the club reported a 24 per cent rise in membership figures since September 2014, and at the same time general manager Rob Finlayson first stated that the club’s goal was to reach 4000 mem-bers and when.Rob says they’re thrilled that locals have

supported them after some rough financial problems two years ago. “We have seen a steady growth in membership since late last year, and meeting this self-imposed target is the icing on the cake. The num-bers speak for themselves, these figures show that locals have recognised what

marvellous facilities the Nelson Suburban Club offers its members and the wider lo-cal community.” The Nelson Suburban Club is currently of-fering 6 weeks free membership. The present $50 annual joining fee is not due for renew-al until July 31, 2016.

Nelsonians are being encouraged to brave the cold this winter and come along to ‘Feast the Senses,’ a month-long dining out event which has been developed by Uniquely Nelson. The promotion, which runs over July, will feature some of Nelson’s finest restaurants and six ‘movable feasts’ which allow diners to enjoy three different courses in three different restaurants.Diners can also accumulate stamps when they spend more than $10 at a Nelson cafe or restaurant and go in the draw to win dining prizes. Also on offer will be ‘Illuminate’ which will feature illuminated art around 27 of the city’s shop windows. To round the month off, Old St Johns will offer three concerts for the ‘Deep in the Bleak’ musc festival. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says that she saw a real

need for a winter event in the city with the Light Nelson Festival and Winter Music Festival not happening this year, and developed the promotion based on similar events she had seen while living in Melbourne. “This will be a real first for Nelson, and we’re planning on making it an annual thing” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for locals to get out and enjoy dining in the city.”Cathy says that she is hoping to work collaborativey with Light Nelson and the Winter Music Festival in 2016. Illuminate has been designed specifically to become a feature of Light Nelson Festival and bring the festival beyond Queens Gardens and into the city.Tickets for the movable feasts are selling quickly, with three of the six moveable feasts sold out already. For tickets to the Moveable Feasts visit www.ticketdirect.co.nz and for more on the festival see www.feastnelson.nz.

Former Tour de France rider Nathan Dahlberg has ridden bikes of all shapes and sizes all around the world, but admits he will need to do some training to get used to the new 'moun-tainbike' he got last week. The Nelson-based cyclist, who rode in the Tour de France in 1988 and 1989, is aiming to set a new world record by riding a bike on top of the 8051 metre Broad Peak in Pakistan, next month. It would be impossible to carry a conventional bike up that high so Nathan asked his friend and cycling enthusiast, Dean Rainbow, to build a cus-tom-made 'mountainbike' just for the expedition. "We had to eliminate anything that could fail in the low tem-peratures at that altitude," Na-than says. "It's 20-below up there and things likes chains, brakes and derailleur's would freeze up solid so we went for a penny-farthing design."I'll be carrying it on the back of my pack and then riding it once we reach the top, so it also had to be light and easy to carry. The handlebars come out and I'll can take one of the ped-als off so that it sits flat against the pack."

Dean, who has built a number of bikes, says the four kilogram mountainbike "isn't built for speed or comfort" with just a thin foam seat and small wheels. Nathan jokes that he could take off and hit some seriously high speeds riding down the 35 degree slopes on Broad Peak without brakes. He says he plans to take the bike for a test run, carrying it up Mt Arthur and then riding

it on the tops before he flies to Pakistan on July 9. "I'll be riding it in the snow and ice wearing climbing boots and crampons, so I'll need some practise. The hardest part could be finding a flat piece of ground on the mountain."Broad Peak is the 12th high-est mountain in the world and if successful, he will break the present record of biking on the 7564m Muztaga Ata in China.

NSR Challenge Cup II, Tuesday, June 9: Tony Cook, organiser of the NSR Challenge Cup II, which took place over the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June, described the event as “bloody brilliant”. Fifty plus racers from Auckland to Dunedin and a number of locals competed in the slot car event, which featured 37 races and was hosted by organiser Tony at his home in Hope. Tony says it was a very successful weekend with a few new members joining up and heaps of support from spectators. This is the second year the races have been held and Tony says it will remain an annual event.

Nelson Young Professionals, Tuesday, June 9: Nelson Young Professionals have had an “absolutely fantastic response” after their article in Nelson Weekly on finding new committee members. Current committee member Wes Malcolm says the phones and emails were going hot and, in total, Nelson Young Professionals have gained a further 10 members; four or five of those looking set to join the committee.

Nomin-eat, Tuesday, June 9: The group behind Nomin-eat says their cause has received a great response from the public since its article in Nelson Weekly. The Swedish Bakery in Nelson has come on board, supplying bread to go alongside the meals they cook, and there have been a number of donations of money. Joni Nacagilevu, one of the 20 people involved in making the meals, says they have also had around 80 new people join them on Facebook; meaning a growing awareness for what they do and plenty of nominations. Joni says Nomin-eat are thinking about increasing the number of meals they cook from 50 to 100.

It’s the perfect time of year to be enjoying hot pools, which is exactly what Janice Reynolds plans on doing. Janice was the winner of the Richmond Mall competition for a family weekend for four to Hanmer. There were 600 entries in total but it was Janice’s decision to shop in Wild South that earned her the trip. Janice says she

hasn’t been to the hot pools in a long time and reckons it will be wonderful soaking in the thermal waters. At the moment, Richmond Mall have a competition on for one of two children’s birthday packages valued at $110 each. Simply complete the entry form provided in the mall between June 15 and July 12 to go in the draw. Belinda DeClercq with Richmond Mall winners Janice and Bruce

Stoke shopper wins $10,000 cashAnge Cousins thought it was a wind up, she just wasn’t sure who would play that kind of prank on her birthday.“I didn’t believe the guy on the phone when he said I won $10,000. It wasn’t until I had another call from Dan [Perrin, owner of Mad Butcher Stoke] that I realised it was for real.”Ange was one of two Mad Butcher shoppers in New Zealand to win a $10,000 cash prize, simply by shopping at the store earlier this month. She says she remembers filling out the entry form but thought it was for some free meat, so didn’t think too much about it.

Then last Monday, Ange got a phone call from the national headquarters of the Mad Butcher saying she was the national winner of the $10,000, a day that also happened to be her birthday.“That’s why I thought it was a prank. I thought someone was playing a joke on my birthday.”Ange says she isn’t sure what she’s going to do with the money yet. The options include a holiday, shopping spree or “doing the sensible thing” and putting it on her mortgage.Dan says he was stoked to see to go to a local. “And it’s great that a regular customer got it as well. Awesome.”

Modellers Pond:I have been a user of the model-lers pond for over twenty years

sailing my models of Nelson immigrant ships I have made. It is a fantastic pond to use and the cub scouts used to use it for their annual raft races back in the 1980’ -90s. I am sure in the future there will be some other hobby or craze, like the resurgence of scooters, that will be only too keen to use it one day. Peta Raggett.

Rocks Rd footpath:It seems to me that if no trucks were allowed on Rocks Rd there

would be no crumbling footpaths, and probably no disintegrating cliffs either. What a huge saving in time and money that would be! Those heavy trucks must be responsible for shaking the road which was never intended to support such behemoths when it was originally built on reclaimed land. Alison Kelso.

Lighthouse weather vane:Wow, awesome to see our light-house being so well looked after!

Monique (via nelsonlive.co.nz).

Tree stumps at beach removed:They were cool.Kay Hart.

What a shame to see this 'art-work' go. Doug Barry-Martin.

Jetstar looking at flying to Nelson:Fingers crossed we get picked. Be awesome. Tina Duncan.

Hope the fares are cheaper! Kerry Irvine.

Will be a great option for my kids in Dunedin!! Pru Bell.

Just what Air New Zealand needs.... competition!

Alison Lonsdale.

Unless someone decides to sup-port Air NZ and ups the landing

fees and space they have to lease, airport will have to upgrade. Martin Thake.

That'd be awesome! No more long drive from Chch! Jo Turner.

Fantastic !! Save my mum hav-ing to go to Auckland to come

visit us on the Gold Coast. Sheree Piesse.

Great, I hope Hamilton to Nel-son is included. About time Air

NZ had some competition since they stopped most flights out of Hamilton, forcing us to go to Auckland. Not every-one wants to go up to Auckland. Maureen Sherborne.

Will never fly Air NZ again if another option out of Nelson.

Been ripped off for too long with their price gouging. Dave Trigg.

Fantastic! Go Jetstar! Great air-line! Never had any problems

with them and get sick of people com-plaining about them! At least they have kept airfares down so that ordinary peo-

ple can afford to travel by plane! Robyn Judy Pengelly.

Great! Air NZ are a bunch of rip offs charge you for everything.

Late flight arrivals and departures regu-larly. Great competition. John Laing.

I say "Go Jetstar NZ". Air NZ needs to have some competi-

tion to keep their pricing honest. We were recently flying to Invercargill a few times. It cost me less to come from Mel-bourne to Invercargill than it did from Wellington to Invercargill, by $100!! How the hell does that work. Jetstar will get things competitive which will be great. Hayley Presling.

I wonder if the Q300's will fly to Australia for maintenance like

the A320s do, or are they going to main-tain them here? That could be good for Nelson, who are already setup to main-tain the same model of planes for Air NZ... Andrew Sutton.

Excellent! May the Origin be with you! Kevin Wilkes.

Fantastic, can't wait. Final-ly some competition for Air

NZ. Nelson people have been getting charged far too much for far too long. Garrymaree Smith.

The Nelson School of Music restoration and rebuild is gaining momentum, with a public fundraising campaign set to launch this week. The heritage building has been closed for over a year because of earthquake risk. The School of Music Trust is now in the process of fundraising to strengthen, refurbish and reopen the auditorium and build a new multi-use facility, complete with rehearsal and teaching rooms. The Rainey House site in Collingwood St is also set for a major revamp. With the plans drawn up, major funders in place, the community is now being asked to help reach a fundraising target of $1.4m out of the total project cost of $6.4m.Fundraising committee chair Colleen Marshall said she is confident there would be plenty of support for the project, given the School of Music’s role at the heart of Nelson’s musical life, and its national reputation. “We have already had some

local businesses coming forward to help. There is so much goodwill out there.” The committee will also apply for grants, and a wide variety of fundraising events and activities are also in the pipeline, including a gala featuring some well-known New Zealand performers. Colleen Marshall calls the rebuild “well overdue”, and is thrilled that Nelson will boast a state-of-the-art music and performance venue that is vibrant and will cater to the city’s young people. “It’s essential” says Colleen.

“Nelson can only be proud of what we are going to achieve here.”The fundraising campaign officially launches at a function in the City Council Civic Chamber on Wednesday, June 24. Construction work is expected to start before the end of year and the buildings will reopen in late 2016. A brochure, with details of the project and other ways to donate, will be available from the Nelson School of Music website nsom.ac.nz from Wednesday, or picked up from Fifeshire House.

A nationwide art competition is underway to find a new label for one of the Sprig and Fern's most popular brews, with $1000 prize money up for grabs. The award-winning Nelson brewery is teaming up with Art Expo Nelson for the competition, which is now into its second year. Artists are being asked to submit one artwork, with four finalists chosen. These will then be displayed in all nine Sprig and Fern taverns across Nelson and Wellington for five weeks, in which time the public can vote for their favourite design. The winning artwork will then take pride of place on the Sprig and Fern's Pilsner, which head brewer Tracy Banner says is their best-selling beer rigger and sold in supermarkets and liquor stores throughout New Zealand. “We want it to get as much nationwide exposure as possible” she says. “We really want to take it to the public.”Nic Foster, project manager of Art Expo Nelson, says he is expecting many more than the 80 en-tries they received last year. “It's a great oppor-tunity for any artist to have their works in the public eye” he says. Judging the entries will be Nic, Tracy and Andy Clover from Seven Design Secrets. “We're also looking for another person to become involved as a judge,” says Nic.The winning entry will be announced at Art Expo Nelson's Opening Night on 24 October, and the four finalists artworks will be on dis-play, and for sale, at Art Expo Nelson during the three day event. Artist applications close on Friday 31 July.

Nayland College will come alive with music, film, drama and dance this week with nightly va-riety shows as part of their Performing Arts Festival. This is the first time the school has organised a festival of this size which they are running in place of Stage Challenge this year. Arts Coordinator Rose Shepard says the students have been working hard on the performances

"A lot of them have not done a public perfor-mance before, it’ll be great for them. Not only are they performing in front of reasonably-sized audiences, but they are also getting assessed." She says the event is also a good way for ex-Nayland students to come along and check out what’s go-ing on. Tickets are $5 and are available from the Nay-land College arts office.

Donaldson Civil won the Hirepool Supreme Award at the Civil Contractors New Zealand Nelson Marlborough Branch awards, held in Nelson on Friday, for completing a challenging $3.1million repair of the flood-damaged Cable Bay Rd.The Stoke-based company took out the top award after earlier winning the Hynds Award for projects valued over $1.5million. It received the awards for completing the contact to remediate Cable Bay Rd, after it was extensively damaged by slips in the December 2011 flood, ahead of time and under budget.“It was a good project for us,” Donaldson Contracting’s co-owner Gary Donaldson says. “But it was also really challenging because we had to work in a very confined area on multiple worksites that were all different. “All the sites were on the down slopes from the road and some of the slips were too steep to walk on before construction. But we were lucky we had a very good crew on the job and good subcontractors - it was a 20-month contract but we finished it in 14 months and under budget.”Co-owner Ken Nell says they purchased a 13 tonne excavator with a special drilling accessory for the contract, because the 29 work sites along the narrow, winding road were too confined for their 20 tonne excavator and a conventional drilling rig. They constructed 22 retaining walls, upgraded six culverts, drilled 438 holes up to

750mm diameter and 10m deep for piles and placed 203 ground anchors after 1785m of anchor drilling, all while managing traffic and working around the main fibre optic cable link to the North Island that runs alongside the Cable Bay Rd.J C Contracting, Webster Drilling, Land Dimension and Kidson Construction were the main sub-contractors. The project was completed in February this year.Independent Kerb and Concrete won the Edridge Crushing and Screening Small Business Award for the Natureland site works and Fulton Hogan won the Crowe Horwath projects valued under $200,000 award for the State Highway 65 Shenandoah Rock Buttress contract. Downer NZ won two awards, the Cable Price projects valued between $200,000-$750,000 for the Moncrieff Ave slip remediation and the Land Dimensions Ltd projects valued between $750,000-$1.5million Award for the Waimea Road Renewal. The H and S Professionals Ltd Health and Safety Award was won by Mike Edridge Contracting for the Bartletts Block Forestry Infrastructure, while the Humes Young Achiever Award was won by Greg Robinson of Mike Edridge Contracting.

Farmlands has been through a few changes in its time, including the move into its current prem-ises on Main Rd Hope and, of course, its brand change from CRT; but one thing has, and always will remain the same, and that’s the staff ’s com-mitment to quality products and reliable advice. While the co-operative itself has been active in Richmond for many years, the building that ac-commodates staff and products is celebrating its fifth anniversary. When it was first introduced to the public at a grand opening party in 2010, both the Farm-lands team and customers were delighted with its drive-through area and efficient flow, through sliding doors into the expansive store. Overall it provided Farmlands customers with an en-hanced shopping experience and is certainly one of the reasons for Farmlands’ success.

While Farmlands is a farmer-owned co-opera-tive, their services and products are for everyone, and that’s something the staff want everyone to know. It’s not all farm supplies either; Farmlands stock a huge range of products that cater to many areas, from clothing and apparel, to irrigation, household supplies, footwear, hand tools, safety equipment, animal health, horse care and stock feed for just about every animal on two or four legs. Although Farmlands is based in Richmond, Nel-son customers are still on their list of priorities and there are a couple of important reasons why shopping with the co-operative is worth it. Farm-lands offers customers a different type of retail experience because the team in the store are all experts within their specific category. “If some-body wants to come in and talk dog food, they

The Farmlands team are always ready to offer advice on their quality products. They are, from left, Bryan, Patrick, Alice, Brady, Charlie, Rob, Evan, Sue, Adam, John, Dave and, in front, Neville and Ben.

If people want advice, that’s what we’re here for, that’s why we hire the caliber of peo-ple that you’ll find at Farmlands,” says manager Bryan Thomas. Farmlands Richmond wants to make sure that people get the best value for money and, by mak-ing sure their staff have a full product knowl-edge, customers can walk away knowing they have spent their money wisely. What many customers aren’t aware of is the va-riety of stock that Farmlands hold and anything they don’t have in-store can be sourced, whether externally or from Farmlands’ network of 82 stores nationwide. It doesn’t matter if it’s stock food or clothing, Farmlands make sure they stock reliable brands and, in doing so, they can confidently stand by what they sell; they even wear it themselves because of its quality and durability, although it has to be hardwearing in order to stand up to the less than delicate life of many of their farming customers. One of the best features of Farmlands is its cov-ered Feed Barn. All stock feed is laid out in the covered drive-through so customers can park next to the product they are after, find what

Farmlands has a massive range of products including quality, durable clothing that the team wear themselves.

Farmlands Richmond is turning 5! With great offers throughout our store, saving money is just the icing on the cake!

The wharves of william akersTen William Akersten played a major role in the creation of Port Nelson. He arrived from Melbourne in 1855 and leased the small Customhouse wharf, building a larger wharf two

years later. In 1876 he was commis-sioned to build a new government wharf which later became part of the present main wharf. He is re-membered in the Akersten Gates by the Customhouse Hotel and by Akersten Street at Port Nelson.

Thought to be Lance Corporal Clifford Griffith (serial no. 40208). Griffith was born on 23 April 1890 in Wai-iti, Nelson, New Zealand. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as L.B. Griffith (father), Wai-iti, Nelson, New Zealand. Griffith worked as a farmer for L.A. Waterhouse before enlist-ing for service during World War One. He embarked with the 23rd Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Regiment, C Compa-ny on 2 April 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand, for Plymouth, England. He served for one year and thirty-four days in West-ern Europe before being discharged on 4 February 1918 as no longer physically fit for war service due to wounds received in active service. Griffith died on 25 June 1975 in Nelson, New Zealand.

A half-pipe skateboard ramp is being planned for Victory Square to create a meeting point for local youths. An information day was held at Victory Square on Sunday to allow locals to have their say on the proposal, which attracted a large number of keen youths and adults. Keep Victory Safe co-ordinator Marcia Higgs says that there has always been a de-mand for a skate facility at the park. “People have wanted it in the area for ten years” she says. “Not only would it create a place for youths to meet, but it would draw in the wider com-munity and attract skaters from all over Nelson, which would be a real positive for Victory retailers.”The exact location of the half-pipe is yet to be decided, but it is likely to be about 6 metres long and 1 metre high and will cost no more than $10,000 to build. Marcia says that they will apply for funding and also fundraise within the community. “There’s

quite a lot of work to do to bring it to fruition” she says. “It will have to go out for public consultation and we’ll create a good case to take to council.” The development will have to be non-disruptive to Saturday sports and other events in the park, but Marcia is confident that it can be built to fit in with the other uses of the park. “A half-pipe of this size is very do-able and affordable for Victory

and we could see some really positive results from it.”Some of the youths who at-tended the information day are planning a Facebook page to promote the half-pipe to the community, and an online sur-vey will be created to get public feedback before any other steps are taken towards submitting the plan to Council. Survey forms are also available at the Victory Community Centre.

BROADGREEN HISTORIC HOUSEAppreciates the time and efforts of our

Volunteers

New Guides always welcome

Have you ever considered volunteer-ing? Sure, you don’t get paid, but for many people around the region the feeling of helping others by donating a few hours of their time is payment enough. This week, from June 21-27, is National Vol-unteer Week and it’s a chance for local volun-teers to be recognized and rewarded for their efforts within many or-ganizations around the region and the country. Volunteers fulfill an es-sential role within our society; the Nelson Tas-man community alone benefiting from millions of volun-teered hours, and without this sup-port many of the services and facili-ties we take for granted could not be provided. “About a third of adults in New Zealand volunteer and we’re very high up amongst developed countries for the level of volunteer-ing,” says Volunteer Nelson manager,

Katy Steele. “Volunteering is impor-tant, fundamentally because it grows communities, a lot of services or ac-

tivities just wouldn’t exist in the com-munity without volunteers. From sports organizations, environmen-tal organizations, social welfare and health, there just wouldn’t be these services without the support and ef-fort from the volunteers; it’s pretty critical.”The theme for this year's National

Volunteer Week is ‘a place for you to volunteer’ and is an opportunity for anyone who’s thinking about volun-

teering to understand that that there’s a whole range of different organizations that people can volunteer with, and a wide range of roles too. Volunteer Nel-son is a referral agency; so any community organiza-tion can post a volunteer role with them and any member of the public can go and search for them. “Here at Volunteer Nel-son, we’ve got 130 organi-sations registered with us and we have a range of roles, from gardening

or administration to working on a committee, one-off events and even roles for people who are interested in things like web design. So if you’re thinking of volunteering, we encour-age you to pop onto our website and register with us,” says Katy. To recognise and promote volun-teering in the community, Volunteer

Volunteer Nelson staff: Holly Drummond, Katy Steele and Jane Solly, with volunteers Karin Bowater, Paul Chaigne and Sebastien Planche

NelsonLocally Owned and Operated Weekly TUESDAY 23 June 2015

Nelson have organised a volunteer challenge, incorpo-rating a number of familiar local faces. It’s the first time the agency has done something like this to celebrate Na-tional Volunteer Week and it will see nine local leaders volunteer-ing at nine different organiza-tions for half a day each during the week. MP Nick Smith, Mayor Rachel Reese and Mayor Richard Kempthorne will be taking part, along with CEO of the NMDHB, Chris Fleming, CEO of the Nel-son Airport, Rob Evans, previous Nelson Mail editor, Paul McIntyre, Emma Helleur from The Hits, Dot Kettle from the Chamber of Com-merce and manager of BNZ, Ste-phen Paul. Volunteer Nelson will be catching up with each person as they complete their volunteer work, taking photos and interviewing them about the experience. Volunteers in our community conduct a range or roles including environmental work, offering support to refu-gees, support at food banks, supporting the elderly, help-ing out at sport clubs and at events. There is also a de-mand for volunteers within the administration sector, including information technology and finance, and also at governance level as a committee or board member. People volunteer their time to organizations for a range of reasons; it could be a personal interest in the area, a desire to meet people or to help people, or to gain work experi-ence. “It’s an opportunity for you to discover what you are passionate about. You can volunteer in any area that interests you, and you will begin to find out about what makes you happy: talking with people, young or old; IT work; or working with animals,” says Katy. Volunteer Nelson also organise low-cost training pro-grams for staff and volunteers on topics such as govern-

ance, sustainable funding and workplace well-being. You can sign up for their e-newsletter by emailing [email protected]. This regular newsletter provides

news, information and updates within the sector. If your organiza-tion is in need of volunteers, you can complete the online registra-tion form at volunteernelson.org.nz or pop into the office at 83A Buxton Square to pick up a copy. The same online registration op-tion is available if you would like to sign up as a volunteer. The great thing about volunteering is that it is very versatile. It can be done on a regular basis or simply for a one-off event; it is up to the volunteer as to how much time they want to contribute and can

even be as little as one hour a week. The Volunteer Nelson team also encourages people to check out their Facebook page and call their Nelson of-fice on 546 7681 for answers to any questions they might have.

Flying hot air balloons can be a risky business, as students from Garin College found out during the school's Mahi Toi festival.Te Wairoa o nga Mahi Toi means the "spirit of creation in the arts", and last Thursday and Friday stu-dents at Garin attended a range of artistic workshops and activities as part of the festival. One of the most popular activities was Sky's the Limit, which involved making pa-per hot air balloons, but as 91 stu-dents found out it wasn't all plain sailing. Two of the paper balloons caught fire on the launching pad and an-other made an unplanned land-ing high up in a tree on the edge of Avery Field. But, according to teacher Tony Etchells, those mini-Hindenburg disasters are just part of paper hot air ballooning. "I found the plan for the balloons on the internet and we had a trial run with my two young boys at home. It went perfectly so we are trying it here, but things do go wrong."If if it's too windy we lose some of them and there's always a chance of a fire. One of the balloons we lost last year landed two kilome-tres away and someone phoned the school and said they had found it."Garin's arts coordinator Lind-sey Furlong-Taylor says students participated in flax weaving, clay-mation and cup cake decorating activities, as well as range of arts including singing, drama and crea-tive writing. Students also created a stunning ensemble of clothing out of recyclable material for the RAW

(Recyclable Art that is Wearable) competition. There were 40 entries in the RAW competition, with students Ellie Springer and Jake Wilkie saying they designed their entry to high-light the issue of domestic violence in society. Elle says they decided on that theme after seeing an adver-tisement that showed one in three people suffer from domestic vio-lence abuse."We thought this was really shock-ing and we wanted to raise some awareness about that, so we created this garment that resembles some of this," Ellie says. "It's made from chipped cracked plates and broken curtains to symbolise the broken families and physical and mental damage domestic violence causes."Lindsey says the standard of work created by the students during this year's Mahi Toi "has gone to a new level." It started with "an amazing performance" in Thursday's open-ing ceremony and continued right through to Friday afternoon's RAW competition. "Our arts captains Jess Brooks, Nick Erasmuson and Eliza-beth Mitchell, are very good this year and they have had a big input into the festival. The creativity of these students is incredible - they never cease to amaze me." People will have a chance to see the best of last week's performances and creations when Garin holds its Mahi Toi concerts at the Hope Community Church on July 1 and 2, starting at 7pm. Tickets for the concert cost $5 for adults and $3 for school-aged children and can be purchased at the Garin College of-fice.

A disclosure statement is available on request.

They came dressed as old men, super heroes and one even dressed his bike as a camel, but organisers say this year’s Six Hour Mid-Winter Breakout event was one of the best ever.Around 350 riders in 120 teams took turns cycling a loop of the Rabbit Island mountain bike circuit in the event, which was in its tenth year.Organiser Wayne Pool says it was the first time it had been back at Rabbit Island for sev-eral years after spending the past five at Kaiteriteri, but he says it worked a treat. “I’ve had absolutely superb feed-back from the riders, prob-ably the best feedback of any event, so I’m really happy.”Wayne says, for many of the riders it was their first ever mountainbike event

and that’s what the day is all about. “It’s about giving peo-ple the opportunity to get in-volved and give people some-

thing to do in the middle of winter as well, because there’s not much else on.”Photos from the event are

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

with

The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club end of season prize-giving night was held Saturday and was a well -attended, great night out.The main titles were taken out by Reid Forest who was overall club champion, along with another seven categories he also won. Well done, Reido. The ladies overall champion was Chris-tine Jobe who has taken this tile for the first time, congratula-tions, Chris. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is a lo-cal family-orientated club of like minded fishos who meet and share stories, ideas and knowledge with each other in their common passion for fishing of all types. Our new season starts in October this year, so if you think you maybe interested in coming along to join or to our open day please have a look at our Website page for contacts or details of upcoming events. http://www.dawnbreakers.co.nz/events.htmlOr on our facebook page; Nelson Dawn-breakers Fishing Club.On the fishing front, winter fishing is where it's at. Crisp and cool morn-ings followed by crisp, sunny and settled-wind days. This is when fishing is at its best, with so many species heading to deeper waters to hibernate and school up in the deeper but warm-er waters, to tide themselves over

winter until spring starts to warm things up again. This is when those in the know can target species with effective tech-niques to have some super hot fish-ing days all within reach of most reliable boats.Obviously good electronics can come into play, but good gear and

techniques can result in fish of a lifetime.Get down to Big Blue to grab the right gear and advice and into Elec-tronic Navigation Ltd to get the up-to-date info on the best sounders (fish finders).Happy fishing and bent rods to all !

Nelson Netball U15 coach Sa-rah Rankin was all smiles with the performances of her team at the Top of the South Tour-nament, held in Blenheim on Sunday. With a very limited prepara-tion, (only two trainings to-gether), the two wins and one loss (by a solitary goal) was an impressive day’s play.Nelson’s first opposition was Buller, who raced ahead to a seven goal lead at half-time as Nelson took time to settle. Sarah rang the changes and combinations began to gel, and Nelson made up ground to five in arrears at three-quarter time. Two turnovers were all that were required to get back into the game and the teams went head-to-head in the final min-utes with Buller coming out on top 28–27.Lydia Swaney was the standout shooter while Olivia Avery was strong through the mid court and put in some beautiful feeds to her shooters. Maddi Spring-er impressed in the defensive circle and she gained numer-ous tips and intercepts at goal defence. Nelson totally dominated Mo-tueka in all facets of play with a 55–5 scoreline. All players acquitted them-selves well. While still respect-ing their opposition, Nelson were able to take the oppor-tunity of taking some risks in their play.Goal shoot Lauren Chaney was fed superbly to find her fa-

voured shooting position near the post to convert near 90 per cent. Leea Conning had a strong game at wing defence - she was “niggly”, quick to the low ball, and picked up an amazing amount of ball around the cir-cle edge. Leea was effective in transition and was a competent ball carrier. Centre Jess Kelly directed play well, was really fast on the drive, however she displayed patience and control on the feed. Both Jess and Jes-sica Williams were effective in looking long to their shooters.Marlborough were an un-known quality, however Nel-son’s combinations had began to gel nicely and their confi-dence was high after such an emphatic win over Motueka.Shooters Lydia and Bailee Tava displayed a great understand-ing of one another’s play and, against much taller opposition, did a sterling job. They rotated the circle well, while Bailee drove along the base line to receive the long ball from Jess. Wing attack Aimee Lewis had

a particularly strong perfor-mance against Marlborough as she worked hard to get to circle edge for the optimum feed.Jaimie Archer came in for praise from her coach as she put in a solid performance at centre in the first game before forming an impressive circle defence with Maddi. Playing front and back, the pair were a formidable unit. Jaime was a threat as she hunted the top of the circle and had a continued presence right to the transverse line.Overall, coach Rankin was “re-ally, really pleased” with her charges – they bonded so well and worked hard to develop the combinations. The team’s next outing is in Nelson on 26 July for the first round of the inaugural Netball Mainland U15 Championship when they will meet Marlbor-ough, Mid Canterbury and Christchurch 4. The second round will be in Christchurch, with the finals in Selwyn.

N e l s o N C o l l e g e N ew Z e a l a N d F i r s t X VNelson College’s 1st XV have had a solid start to the 2015 season. In the Crusaders schools competition, the UC Championship, they have a six win and three loss record and are looking for a few results to go their way in the second half of the competition so they can climb the table. The team have put some goals in place and, of course, one is to perform well in the Quadrangular Tournament. They are well aware of the historical significance of the tournament and also the huge hurdle of overcoming perennial champions Wellington Col-lege, whom they lost narrowly 5-0 to last year in atrocious and cold condi-tions.

This year, the 89th running of the tournament is being hosted by Wellington College, with Nelson College taking on Wan-ganui Collegiate in the first game on Monday, June29.Based on a powerful loose for-ward combination, Nelson have been looking to play an expan-sive game built on continuity and keeping the ball in play. Their backline has also enjoyed running the go-forward ball. The coaches have instilled a fif-teen man approach and they are looking forward to entertaining the crowd in Wellington

Twenty runners complete first marathonTwenty runners ticked off a major bucket-list challenge on Sunday, complet-ing their first-ever marathon. The Monaco Mid-winter Marathon, in its second year, saw 300 runners compete a marathon, either by themselves, as part of a duo or as part of a six person relay team.Of the 70 doing the full marathon, 20 were doing it for the first time. Organiser Stu Cottom says that’s a fantastic result. “You always remember your first marathon, vividly, so hopefully

this has planted the seed for many of them.”Nelson’s Brian Kemp was the overall win-ner, coming in with a time of 2 hours and 53 minutes. The event also raised several thousand dol-lars for the Mental Health Foundation and Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust.Stu says the success of the event means it will be back in 2016, with a date of June 19 already pencilled in. “It was pleasing to see so many people there and I’m very keen for it to go on.”
