22nd & 23rd November 2014Sir Tom FinneySports Centre

Marsh LanePrestonPR1 2YFPR1 2YF
Welcome . . .
It is my privilege as Chair of Table Tennis England to welcome our young players, their coaches, parents, supporters and our volunteers to the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre at the University of Central Lancashire for the National Cadet and Junior Championships. This is one of my favourite events in the table tennis calendar as it showcases our young talent and is a signpost for the future of our sport. Our young players are at the heart of our game and I am fully aware that we need to engage with them and create an environment where they will enjoy table tennis and reach their full potential. I have recently been honoured by being appointed as Chair of the Youth Committee at the European Table Tennis Union and I want to use that position along with my role in Table Tennis England to help to create a positive environment for all young players to participate in this sport. This year has seen many developments which will impact on our junior and cadet players, but we have more to do. I feel we need to address this at two levels. We need to create the opportunities for all young people to choose to play and enjoy table tennis in schools, clubs, and sports facilities. If they start to play at an early age, they can make it their sport for life. And, we also need to establish a pathway so that our most talented cadets and juniors – many of whom are here today – can achieve their full potential on a national and international stage. I am pleased that we have already made progress on this pathway. We have created a 28-‐strong England Youth Squad to focus on providing every opportunity for our elite young players – again, many will be here today. We also have identified Talent Development Centres around the country to identify and nurture early talent. We are proud of the achievements of some of our top junior and cadets on the international circuit and we hope this is the start of more trophies, medals and awards. Our Cadet and Junior National Championships is our annual showcase event for our young players. To these players, I would say you have earned your place here, and to be performing on this stage is a testament to your talent. Some of you will be here because you have already attained a certain ranking and are automatic qualifiers. Others will have played for their places in the 10 qualification events around the country. Whichever is your route to this event, know that you are among the elite in the country and can be proud of your achievements so far. I hope you all enjoy the weekend, and play to the best of your ability.
Thanks . . . These events would not happen without the support and involvement of many people, including our staff at Table Tennis England, our sponsors and, of course, our valued volunteers. I would like to thank: . . . the University of Central Lancashire who continue supporting table tennis and have provided this venue free of charge. Particular thanks to Martin Baines and Andy Coverdale for their assistance. . . . Tees Sport, who continue to support table tennis, particularly our young players, and who are the equipment providers for this event. . . . our team of officials -‐ Referee, Brian Jackson; Deputy Referee, Steve Smith; Referee’s Assistant, Josh Reynolds; Tournament Organiser, David Evans; Assistant Organiser, Jim Kenny; Umpires’ Manager, Margaret Welch; our excellent team of umpires; and Amanda Robinson and the other staff members from Table Tennis England for their continued support and their work which goes beyond their roles. I hope you enjoy the Championships. I will be here for the weekend, along with some of my Board colleagues and senior management team from Table Tennis England. I hope we have the opportunity to meet many of you during the weekend. Sandra Deaton Chair Table Tennis England
Please noteAll play today is with Stag 3 Star plastic balls. Tables: Butterfly Europa.
Access to the field of play will be restricted to officials, players and one coach per player.
Players should only wear appropriate table tennis attire on the courts.

2013 was a year of firsts, as all four singles winners at the Cadet & Junior Nationals registered their maiden victories at that level.
In the Junior Boys, Helshan Weerasinghe made it third time lucky after suffering defeats to Sam Walker in the two previous finals.
Weerasinghe’s opponent was Igor Morais and the top seed was not to be denied as he took a 3-0 (11-8, 11-9,
11-7) victory, though he did not have it all his own way as he trailed 6-0 in the second game.
In the doubles, there was another maiden title-winner in the shape of Adam Harrison, who took his first title alongside defending champion Danny Lawrence, the pair seeing off top seeds Weerasinghe and Sam Mabey in five brilliant games, rallying from 2-1 down to win 11-13, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9.

2013 roll of honour
The Junior Girls’ event pitched the top two seeds against each other in the final, and it was No 2 Maria Tsaptsinos who defeated No 1 Tin-Tin Ho.
The standard was set in an epic first game, which Tsaptsinos took 15-13, both girls having spurned two game points each. Ho was imperious in levelling the score, however, taking an 8-1 lead and ultimately the game 11-4.
The third was no less enthralling as Tsaptsinos moved from 7-6 down to 10-7 up, only to see Ho level at
10-10. The Berkshire teenager took the next two points to move 2-1 ahead and then sealed the title with an 11-4 scoreline in the fourth.
The girls’ doubles final saw a five-setter as top seeds Tsaptsinos and Ho dug deep to come back from 2-0 down and finally end the dream of Lois Peake and Letitia McMullen 9-11, 3-11, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6.
In the mixed doubles, Weerasinghe and Ho claimed their second titles of the weekend as they combined to beat Morais and Tsaptsinos in three straight.

The tag of hardest-earned victory could well be given to either of the Cadet Singles winners.
In the Boys’ event, Tom Jarvis had dropped just one game en route to his second successive final, but in Luke Savill he met an opponent with the weaponry and will to take him the distance.
Savill took the first and third games 11-9 and 11-5, either side of an 11-4 score in favour of Jarvis in the second.
The final really kicked on a level in the fourth, when Jarvis saw a 10-5 lead evaporate to give Savill a match
point at 11-10. But Jarvis held his nerve to save that and then take his own game point at 12-11.
The deciding end saw arguably the best table tennis of the championship as Savill led 5-0 and 7-2, only for Jarvis to claw back to 7-7.
Savill missed two more match points at 10-8 and Jarvis then spurned one of his own at 11-10. But the next two points went his way as he sealed the title 13-11.
Jarvis and Savill teamed up to win the doubles, beating Alex Ramsden and James Smith in four.

In the Cadet Girls’ Singles, Kate Cheer won two successive five-setters to seal her final spot, seeing off Jane Li in the quarter-finals and No 1 seed Denise Payet in the semis.
No 2 seed Kate Nixon awaited in the final, and a 3-0
(11-9, 11-7, 11-9) scoreline in favour of Cheer does not tell the full story of a hard-fought clash.
Cheer and Nixon then teamed up to defeat Payet and Zahna Hall in four games to take the Cadet Girls’ Doubles trophy.
