2. The initial point on the northern part otAriake Kai at the mouth-of the Chikuga Kawawaa exoellent due to thedistinotive area and good land-water contrast.

.3 . . The surrounding area provided geed refer-enoe cheek points both for rate and course.

li. The target was good for either direct orfixed-angle offset banbing.

(d) Fo.r Mission No. 212. the following radar eea-siderations entered. into the planning:

],. Shizuoka, located on a flat plai.ll near theeoast on SUruga Wan, was a good radar target.

(2) E n e mYAntiaircraft;

(a) For Mission Numbsr 210, it was knOt"m from Photoreconnaissance that the Toyohashi defenses included 14 heavy guns, 52medium weapons and 3 searchlights. Aircraft were not expected to bein range of the 6 beavy guns and 47 medium';7eapona north of Toyohashi.Due to tho poor night defenses of the city, inaccurate tire was pre-

dicted. It uas decided to attack from the west, with 9. breakaway tobe made t o . the right to avOid all antiai rcr3ft defenses in the vicin-ity. Base aititude of attack wa s to be 7000 fe~t.

(b) For Mission Number 211, the Fukuoka defenseswere expected to be moderatelY effective due to tba 49 heavy @llls,71 medium weapons and 5 searchlights in the city. The lack of seaz-oh-lights uas expected'to handioap the Japanese. It was decided to at-tack from the south, due to the fact the defenses were east and northof the city. Breakaway was to be to the right to avoid Kyushu anti-aircraft defenses. A base altitude of 8000 teet was specified far

the 3l3th Wing and 9000 feet for ,he 73rd Wing.

(c) For Mission Nwnber 2l2. it wae knO'lin from phCTte'reconnaissance t h a t the Shizuoka defenses were poor for night defense,

including only 16 heavy guns, 4 medium weapons and 1 searchlight.Antiaircraft was not a major planning consideration and the route~a8 planned t o avoid t h e defenses in t h e general area. Base att3ckal ti tude specified was 8000 feet.,

(2) Two balls of fire were observed just before. bonbeaway. One bright !'ball of fire" approached to within 50 yaxds'of 1B-29 at 7 o t cLcck low at a very high speed at an altitude of 9. 8 00feet. The B~29 took sliGht evasive action and fired at the objectwith no apparent results. After the object passed under the B-29,visual contact was lost. No wing nor fuselage was seen in connec-tion therewith. Another object having the appearance of a largetracer with trailing smoke passed approximately 100 feet over 1

B-29. Aga i n , no other distinguishing features were noted. Inas~much as the lighted objects did not trail the B-29's as in the pastand considering the number of ground-to-air rockets reported. itwas possible that the reported objects were actually rockets.

(3) One phosphorus banb burst was observed just afterbombs away. The reporting crew was of the opinion th':lt it was anair-to-air bomb due to the fact that after bursting it descerded a ta 45':'degree angle (300 yards to the left of the observing aircraftat 9,800 feet).

f. Searchlight Activity:

(1) Between 15 aDd 25 searchlights were reported in thetarget area. Approximately 55. o.r 30%, of the aircraft over the tar-get reported being picked up by beams and held for periods of 30 sec-onds to 4 minutes.

(2) 'Same crews reported that rope proved very effectivein eluding lights. and some also reported that evasive action provedeffective. Most lights seemed to searca for periods of about 1 min-ute before effecting a pick up; however. 2 green beams "ere observednear the center of the city which effected several "zero" pick ups(radar controlled).

(3) Approximate postions and number of searchlights ob-served were as f oll ows; Miyazaki,' 4 (P. I. coverage also ShOI7B' ~) jKumamoto. 6 t M1yakonojo, 12J Crnuta,. 2; Isahaya A/F, 2; Kashima, Iitarget area, 15-25; and 8 miles east of Fukuoka. 2.

h. Miscellaneous AAObservations:

(1) Several greenish blue flares were observed ascend-ing'and exploding a t 7000 to 8700 feet. They emitted a faint trailand. upon exploding, briefly illuminated the sky.

(2) Several greenish explosions or glows on the groundwere reported in the target areao Crews reported the appearance ofthese glows seemed to be' coordinated with' the searchlights. Thisapparently .. es a similar, if not the same, phenomenon described inthe Tokyo area on XXI Bomber ConmandMission No. 183 (det.ails otwhich appeared in XXIBomber CommandTactical Mission Report).

(3) Six crews reported a series of red or ember groundlights or flares (not searchlights) en route and out of Kyushu. Theselights or flares were estimated to be' 10 to 20 miles apart and would

come on in pairs as a B-29 approached. then go off after the aircraftpassed OVer. The sequence of turning them on and off was done insuch a manner that the B-29's ground path was well defined. ThisSame phenomenon was previously reported around Nagoya. From the avail-able infonnstion there seemed to b~ no relationship between theselights and flak defenses. However, the possibility exists that theselights might be used to define the B-29 flight paths to vector enEilllY'interceptor aircraft.

-

(4) One crew reported that about 100 possible rocketscarne up from 5 posi tions just south of Fukuoka. About one half ofthese rockets had green trails. a m one half red trails. They as-cended to about 12,000 feet, looped over and exploded with whiteflashes.

(5) CreviS reported red trail rockets could have beentracer :fire, but tha.t green trail ones were rockets •.

(6) Another crew reported that while over the targ~tarea'2 greenish-blue tear-drop shaped "glows" ascended in a long,S10\7, shallow climb from the eastern part 'of Fukuolca. These "glaws"were bout the size of 40 mmflak and exhibited no rocket trails. Atabout 12,000 feet they burned out without explcding.
