Great Futures Start HERE! at the Boys and Girls Club of Eden This week at the Boys and Girls Club, the members got to make a collage of their future dreams and goals. Our motto is “great futures start here.” The staff talked to the members about how they can reach their goals. Each member picked one goal they have, and then cut pictures out of magazines to represent steps in how to reach their dream. Pictured here from Left to Right: Madison: Future Gym-nast, Catherine: Future (and present) animal lover, Eliza-beth: Future Animal Rescue Worker, Savannah: Future Pop Star, and Emily: Future Optometrist

Erie County 4H Horse Bowl Members of the Burdock Farms Trailblazers 4H Club of Eden competed in the annual Erie County 4H Horse Bowl on January 17 at Faith United Church of Christ in the Town of Boston. Teams from all over Erie County gathered to compete in this event. The Horse Bowl is conducted in a game show format, testing each team’s knowledge on a wide variety of horse topics. Many of our members com-peted here for the first time, and some qualified to move on to regional competition. Most importantly, our girls learned much more about horses and showed great sports-manship. We are proud of them and thank the 4H commit-tee members and leaders for organizing this event. Appearing (L to R): Hannah Bojczuk, Claire Danyluk, Shelby Weaver, Rachel Regan. Faith Federowicz , Charlotte Pinker, Sarah Waite.

Debra K. Werner (nee Stalter)
Debra K. Werner (nee Stalter), 62, of East Eden, New York died January 28, 2015. Debbie was an ambi-tious daughter and a won-derful sister. Growing up she and her siblings had great fun on “Big Mac Hill” sledding, ice skating and just being kids. Deb graduated from North Tonawanda Senior High School in June 1970 with business as her ma-jor. She aced the shorthand exam and went on to start her career as a legal secre-tary for the next 45 years. She worked for Richard Handle from 1970-1975, then Lou Siegel from 1976-2005. After 2005 she worked for Cheryl Green from 2006-2008. She has been working for Erie County Law from 2006 until her unexpected death. She was engaged to Jo-seph T. Werner in 1977 and the two got married in 1978. Together they purchased their one and only home in October 1979 in East Eden, NY. Their first son Joey was born on April 8, 1981 and Jeffrey followed on August 26, 1985. She was the lov-ing daughter of Phyllis E. (late Charles) Stalter. She was the sister of Sherry Ganley, Robert Stalter and Janeen (Philip) Godfrey. She was an avid bowler with many years of league bowling. She was a pretty darn good bowler! She loved animals espe-cially dogs as she and Joe had 2 Kemo, a beautiful Siberian Husky and Alex a golden Retriever. She also loved birds. She was known for always feeding her hum-
mers and other birds daily out in her back yard. She loved people and people loved her. She will be missed by many. VETERANS POSTby Freddy Groves
A Decade of DelayWhat’s going on in Aurora, Colorado? A new Depart-ment of Veterans Affairs medical center, to be used by veterans in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyo-ming, was fi rst approved for construction in 2004, and it’s still not up. Groundbreaking for the new facility began in 2009 with completion planned for 2013. When the builder con-tract was signed in 2010, the agreed-upon price was $582.8 million ... before the design was even completed. Since then, the contractor has complained about late payments, incomplete plans, change orders that went un-processed for over a year, switching from a shared fa-cility to a stand-alone hospi-tal, relocation of the facility,
and the discovery of an un-derground spring and a bur-ied swimming pool.No one was watching the architect, who had designed costly additions like curved walls. Medical-equipment planners weren’t used, and instead the VA got input from others with limited experi-ence. By January 2013, they were still haggling about try-ing to redesign the hospital to fi t the actual budget. At a recent meeting of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, which was to sort out all the details, the actual cost of the project still wasn’t known. The guess at this point is that it will be more than $1 billion -- dou-ble the original estimate and a decade after the decision was made to build the facil-
ity.In December, work came to a halt when the constructioncompany pulled its workers off the site after a federalboard of contract appealssaid the VA had breached thecontract. Then came word that the Army Corps of En-gineers was taking over man-agement.Now, a decade into the proj-ect, the estimated openingwill be in 2017 ... maybe.Aurora isn’t the only locationwith these problems.
Freddy Groves regrets thathe cannot personally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into his column whenever possible.Send email to [email protected].

WNY author Christina Abt, is following up the success of her recently pub-lished novel, “Crown Hill A Novel of Love, Life and The Afterlife”, by launching a national book signing tour. According to Abt, what sets this tour apart from tradi-tional author appearances are the organizers of the events. “Readers from around the United States have been contacting me through my website and on Facebook to ask if I would come to their communities for Crown Hill signings,” Abt said. “My answer from the start was the same, ‘If you set it up, I’ll come’. To my sur-prise, not only have read-ers gone to their local book stores, art galleries and gift shops to pitch Crown Hill signings, they have taken care of my accommoda-tions and offered to be my tour guide throughout the events. It’s been quite amazing and I am grateful for all of their support”. Abt will begin the first of her national signings January 30 at the 127 SoBo ARTS Gallery and January 31 at Barrel of Books and Games Store, both located in Winter Garden, Florida. From there she will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana for a series of book store and book club signings, fol-lowed by a return to Florida in late spring. “The growing popularity of Crown Hill outside of Western New York, where the story is set, establishes the book’s broad-based reader appeal,” Abt said. “Over and above the story elements of small town life, family connections, mys-tery and spiritualism, there is the universal storyline of, ‘home’ as that essen-tial place we all desire and strive to find. I am truly honored that the years I invested in writing Crown Hill are being rewarded by these grass roots book sign-ings that readers are orga-nizing.” In Crown Hill, Abt has intertwined the real lives of those who have been part of the 150-year history of her home into a compelling story of love, life and the
WNY Author Launches National Book Tourafterlife. with the twist of giving voice to her home as the story's narrator. According to Adrienne Carr, former Doubleday Publishers Associate Mar-keting Director and Presi-dent of Sparks Literary Marketing, Crown Hill is an engaging work of his-torical fiction. “In Crown Hill, Christina has superbly interwoven 150 years of her home's real life history with richly detailed stories of its inhabitants from her writer’s imaginings. Book lovers, wherever they call home, will be charmed and intrigued by this mysteri-ous love story.” Abt officially launched Crown Hill last September. Since then, over 600 books have gone into circulation, resulting in supportive reader reviews on Amazon and Goodreads and put-ting Crown Hill on track to becoming a regional best seller. Barnes and Noble have also added Crown Hill to their national catalogue of books. Further informa-tion and a video trailer for “Crown Hill” are available at http://christinaabt.com. About Christina M. Abt: Christina M. Abt is an ac-complished author, news-paper columnist and radio broadcaster. Her written work has been featured in national publications in-cluding an array of Chicken Soup Books and national equine publications, as well as a wide range of Buf-falo, New York newspapers and magazines. She furthered her broadcast career with the launch of Buffalo-style Talk Radio on WECK (1230AM) and as WECK’s morning drive co-host, working with WNY radio icon, Tom Donahue. She

sembly. COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS
By Sam Struckhoff
PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Theory of Everything” (PG-13) -- Renowned sci-entist Stephen Hawking is best known as the man who revolutionized the way we think about time and space, even as a debilitating dis-ease left him unable to move or speak on his own. This biopic spans many decades, but focuses primarily on the romance between two bril-liant Cambridge students -- Hawking (Eddie Red-mayne) and his fi rst wife, Jane (Felicity Jones) -- and their struggle as Hawking’s health starts to rob him of life’s simplest things.By keeping the fi lm centered on this story of young love and the hardships that assail it, “The Theory of Every-thing” has more to say about human emotion than it does about black holes or quan-tum mechanics. The perfor-mances by Redmayne and Jones elevate the fi lm.
“The Interview” (R) -- James Franco plays a charis-matically stupid celebrity in-terviewer, and Seth Rogen is his best friend/producer who grows concerned that they’ll never be taken seriously. It just turns out that Kim Jong-Un, the supreme leader of North Korea, is a huge fan of Franco’s show and wants an interview. The U.S. gov-ernment (represented here by Lizzy Kaplan) presses the two stooges into using the interview to covertly kill the dictator. This goofball comedy was the spark that sent threats fl ying between nations and arguments raging over free speech. Even with all the hoopla, the movie is more “Pineapple Express” than
“Dr. Strangelove.” You’ll laugh, but this isn’t the mov-ie that breaks the mold with profundity or global aware-ness.
“St. Vincent” (PG-13) -- Vin-cent (Bill Murray) is an an-ti-social old man who might have a heart of gold buried under his nasty rejoinders, laziness, perpetual hangover and scary gambling debts. He’s thrown into babysit-ting for his new neighbors, a sweet single mom (Me-lissa McCarthy, not as an over-the-top screwball) and her picked-upon young son (Jaeden Lieberher). Vincent lets the boy into his world of racetrack gambling, strip-pers and dive bars, which somehow helps both of them grow as people. Murray fi ts into this role like it was meant for him (shockingly,
it wasn’t), keeping thingseven with the movie’s su-per-sappy sentimental side.
“Life Itself” (R) -- This doc-umentary was started withthe intent to make a fi lm about the life of a notewor-thy man, but ended up as afi lm about his death as well. It’s also a deeply impactfuldocumentary about whatmakes us love movies andhow truth works its wayonto fi lm. Famed movie crit-ic Roger Ebert collaboratedwith documentarian SteveJames in deciding how heshould be shown in the fi lm-- as honestly as possible, even the grim reality of hislast days with cancer. Theresult is simply moving,a movie about the past asmuch as it is about what’s happening during its cre-ation.

DOLLARS AND SENSEBY David Uffi ngton
Bargains to be had on new & used carsNot only are gasoline prices falling, the prices for cars that use the gas are predict-ed to fall as well. So says the NADA Used Car Guide in its 2015 market forecast. The availability of late-mod-el used cars is predicted to rise by 8 percent, which means that consumers are out there shopping for new vehicles and leaving those used cars behind. The availability of luxu-ry compact utility vehicles will see the biggest increase, at 33 percent, followed by sub-compacts at 24 percent. Large cars, on the other hand, will see the biggest drop in availability, at 14 percent, followed by mid-size pick-ups and large SUVs.This means that if you’re in the market for a big SUV, you’ll still pay a high price for it because there just won’t be as many of them around. With the price of gas falling, those who own big vehicles are no longer in a hurry to unload them for something more economical. On the other hand, if you’re shopping for a mid-size or compact car, expect to see prices fall because of the availability.Consumer money guru Clark Howard (www.clarkhoward.
com) is now willing to con-sider buying new instead of used. Loan terms on new cars are better, and consum-ers end up paying less be-cause the cost of the loan is so much less. New SUVs ar-en’t a good deal now because of the falling gas prices. Peo-ple are once again willing to buy gas guzzlers, cutting the supply and leaving the fu-el-effi cient vehicles on the lot. If you buy something no one else wants, you can save considerable cash.If you prefer to stick with a used vehicle, consider your steps before you buy. Get your fi nancing fi rst, and know what you can spend. Check Edmunds.com or NADA.com and get an idea of the value of your preferred
vehicle. Check Carfax.comto be sure the vehicle you want isn’t on a previous crash list. Get the vehicle in-dependently inspected.Bottom line: There are dealsto be had. Save by buying aused vehicle in the categoryof too much supply and notenough demand, or save by buying a new vehicle in the category of vehicles no onewants and take advantage of better fi nance terms. As al-ways, do your homework.
