The Depuis project
DEPUIS acronym = Design of Environmentally friendly Products Using Information Standards
Aims at improving the environmental friendly design of new products and services through the innovative use of new information standards
Fits the European Commission Integrated Product Policy, promotion of the use of life cycle thinking with SME’s i.e. take into account the full product or plant life cycle
A European project in which 10 partners participate from 8 countries.
Mixture of industry groups, consultants, software companies, training institutes, certification institute
Project runs two years: Sep 06 – Sep 08, extended Nov 08
Depuis standards network is one of 6 Europe Innova intiatives

European participation in the project
21 Nov 08 WS INNOVAFUN / FG-CDC 6
Specific objectives of the project
Help SME’s to use product data technology for communication, comparison and archiving technical data
Prepare a Multimedia Handbook on product data technology and organise and provide e-learning courses with a view to enable SME’s to adopt IPP environmental tools such as LCA and Ecodesign
Provide basic knowledge to software developers in order to produce software compatible with international standards
Provide feedback to standards developers
Possibly set-up a Certification scheme for product data technology knowledge and skills manager to support the environmental impact of products
21 Nov 08 WS INNOVAFUN / FG-CDC 7
Interested Parties Forum (IPF)
The Interested Parties Forum (IPF) is a collection of of bodies and parties with SME representation, invited to: Formulate the users requirements Validate the multimedia handbook and the e-
learning model
The IPF is also invited to assist in promoting the importance of PDT and LCT knowledge and skills among the SME’s

The challenge of DEPUIS
Demonstrate the necessity of using information standards to support LCA thin king i.e. the environmental impact assessment of of products and installations
The DEPUIS team works on the documentation of the House Case demonstrating this for optimising the construction of a house within CO2 emissions constraints
21 Nov 08 WS INNOVAFUN / FG-CDC 11

LCA analysis timber roof
The roof frame illustrated in Figure 16 is made from laminated timber. The sequence of manufacturing operations for the production of a laminated timber beam, starting from sheets of kiln dried natural timber, is: eliminate defects, control moisture, machine finger joint, apply bonding adhesive, make joint, plane surface, apply surface adhesive, overlap layers, press assembly of layers, plane laminated beam to size, check quality.
The components for the manufacture of the whole roof structure are shown in Figure 17.
