EUROPE II PISTEP UK

Association created 1993? Exists at minimal level since 2000 when most members were lost due to lack of delivery of STEP and other international standards.

Covers oil, gas, process & power industry supply chain

Development ISO15926 series, ISO10303-221 (joint with USPI)

EPISTLE EUROPE Association created around 1990 for process industry. Any company could join.

Focused on ISO15926, ISO10303-221.

In 1998 changed from individual memberships to consortia memberships.

Management has been difficult since 1998 due to 2 libraries, 2 data models and conflict of interests in particular with POSCCaesar

The ISO15926-4,5,6 project is a formal EPISTLE project as A-Liaison of TC184/SC4

o Project Managers: Paul van Exel, USPI-NL; Nils sandsmark, POSCCaesar

Have developed and implemented a dictionary for measurement and control equipment. Is standardised as ISO13584-501 with a RA (Registration Authority) run by Toshiba.

ECALS Japan Association of manufacturers of electronic components.

Have developed and implemented a dictionary as group, not as ISO standard.

KAIST University Korea Professor Soonhung Han has collected all possible information about ways to

manage plant life cycle data in the planned nuclear plant industry the coming years.

Korea leads the current IMF VIPNET project to demonstrate web based standardised data warehousing over the life cycle of a plant.

THE STANDARDS ADOPTION PROBLEM

The problem of developing and implementing standards is not

only a technical problem.

Take other dimensions into account in company planning I.e.: strategic

alignment, business processes, people and organisation.

If in doubt, have a readiness assessment performed first. Align results with

plans you already had

Speed of adoption of standards is limited and there much work

to do and.

Therefore cannot afford fragmentation, need to achieve critical mass and

focus

There are multiple standards options, therefore jointly agree on common

path forward with sufficient individual flexibility.

Do standard development and implementation in a logical order, follow the

Roadmap for life cycle data

Global cooperation models

CRITICAL MASS Establish forum of groups of groups with simple charter

Industry driven by Plant owners, EPC’s, large equipment manufacturers

Build in order Country - Europe - Global

Example groups: NAMUR-PROLIST, USPI, THTH, eCl@ss, ETIM, FIATECH

Possibly trade associations such as VDE, FHI, FME, VNCI

Perform jointly in PELC 2008

Request common solutions from solution providers

FOCUS ON STANDARDS Must be ISO, IEC global

Commonly supported in consensus decision

No complicated long tedious mergers, just choose

Run European pilot projects, possibly with subsidy

Agree joint roadmap and common integration frame

Give attention to translation of customer requirements to system requirements and then data and documentation requirements.
