EJ Tackett Signs 10-Year Deal With Motiv

by Lucas WisemanEJ Tackett, one of the most high-profile players on the

PBA Tour, has signed a 10-year contract extension to stay with Motiv, the company announced Tuesday.

Tackett, who has been with Motiv for seven years, is a 13-time PBA Tour champion and was the PBA Player of the Year in 2016.

“The people at Motiv are like family to me,” Tackett said in a release. “Ten years means I don’t have to worry about anything but going out there and winning for another decade. I love throwing the best balls in the world and rep-resenting such amazing people.”

Tackett, 28, has had tremendous success on the PBA Tour dating back to his first title at the 2015 Lubbock Sports Open. His 13 titles include two majors, the 2016 PBA World Championship and the 2017 PBA Tournament of Champions.

The powerful right-hander has been in a bit of a title slump recently, however, as he hasn’t won since the sum-mer of 2019. Tackett’s last title came at the PBA Tour Fi-nals in July 2019.

Despite that drought, he has still proven to be one of the best on the tour. He finished in the Top 16 of all four ma-jors in 2020, including making the show at the PBA Play-ers Championship (second) and the PBA World Champi-onship (third).

Tackett will also donate $10,000 to the Epilepsy Foun-dation this week in support of his brother Zac, who also competes on the PBA Tour and lives with epilepsy.

Tackett recently released his first signature bowling ball, the limited edition Motiv VIP, and $1 from each ball sold will be donated to the foundation. BowlerX also do-nated all proceeds from the pre-sales of the ball.

Two Hands On The Future Debuts

by Lucas WisemanFloBowling’s newest documentary titled Two Hands

On the Future made its worldwide debut Friday at 4 p.m. on FloBowling.com.

Two Hands On The Future will chronicle the rise of competitive two-handed bowling in the Professional Bowlers Association. It will prominently feature the first two-handed PBA Tour champions Jason Belmonte and Osku Palermaa.

The documentary will feature in depth interviews with Belmonte and Palermaa and many others. It will take a closer look at the rise to prominence of the two-handed approach through the eyes of the first two champions us-ing the style.

In addition, the documentary looks back into the past with a sit down interview with Chuck Lande, widely be-lieved to be the first regular two-handed competitor to join the PBA. It also looks ahead to the future of two-handed bowling and includes interviews with young bowlers in the sport.

FloBowling subscribers will be able to watch the docu-mentary. To subscribe to FloBowling, click here.

FloBowling’s first documentary, released last year, fea-tured the story behind young PBA star Anthony Simonsen. Subscribers can watch Simonsen: Leave It Behind on de-mand anytime.

USBC AFFIRMS STRING PINSETTERS ARE

NON-APPROVED EQUIPMENTARLINGTON, TX - The United States Bowling Con-

gress affirms string pinsetters currently are considered non-approved equipment. String pinsetters may not be used in USBC-certified competition, including USBC-certified leagues and tournaments.

USBC is clarifying its position related to string pinset-ters following the recent announcement from the Interna-tional Bowling Federation, stating it will allow the use of the machines in IBF competition.

"Currently, there is no empirical data for USBC to de-termine exactly what additional variables string pinset-ters may present related to equipment specifications and standards," USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. "USBC cannot take a position related to string pinsetter certification until objective research on the subject is con-ducted, published and properly analyzed."

USBC is in the process of conducting research related to string pinsetters. USBC plans to complete an initial phase of the study and publish the results in 2022. How-ever, the results may or may not provide conclusive data to support a position on string pinsetter certification.

elle McEwan, and some of the Tour’s top-performing stars (see complete lineup below).

The PBA League All Star Clash features the PBA’s drama-filled one-ball elimination format that has twice garnered the highest bowling TV ratings in more than a decade on FOX. The players begin round one rolling one-ball, with the lowest score eliminated and ties determined by another one-ball roll-off. The high-intensity competi-tion continues for the survivors in each round until one player is left standing as the champion. In this ever-unpre-dictable format, anything can happen!

The 12 All Star players were selected to represent their teams by having the highest number of PBA or PWBA titles on each team, with an impressive combined total of 248 Tour titles. The players competing in the PBA League All Star Clash, in the order they will bowl each round are as follows:

Norm Duke, Dallas Strikers, 40 PBA titlesDom Barrett, Philadelphia Hitmen, 8 PBA titlesWalter Ray Williams Jr., Brooklyn Styles, 47 PBA titlesChris Barnes, Silver Lake Atom Splitters, 19 PBA titlesFrancois Lavoie, Las Vegas High Rollers, 4 PBA titlesLiz Johnson, Phoenix Fury, 24 PWBA titlesPete Weber, NYC KingPins, 37 PBA titlesEJ Tackett, Motown Muscle, 13 PBA titlesWes Malott, Portland Lumberjacks, 10 PBA titlesJason Belmonte, L.A.X, 25 PBA titlesSean Rash, Brew City Ballers, 16 PBA titlesDanielle McEwan, Miami Waves, 5 PWBA titles

Viewers can live stream the PBA on the FOX Sports and FOX NOW apps or at FOXSports.com. Select high-lights will also be available on @FOXSports social han-dles across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. International fans can watch live on FloBowling.com.

The California Bowling Writers has adopted Operation Freedom Paws! Operation Freedom Paws nonprofit organization was founded by “California Bowler and Veteran” Mary Cortani in 2010 that has provided service dogs and training support to veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, complex PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other physical, neurological, psychological and mobility needs. According to experts, service dogs help empower people with disabilities to live quality lives. Operation Freedom Paws carefully matches cli-ents with their specially chosen four-legged com-panions, most of which come from rescue shel-ters. The partners then begin a 48-week program which trains the clients to train their own dogs. At the end of the program, they’re certified together as service dog teams. Make donations payable to CBW and mail to Treasurer Tina Martin, 57 Shields Lane, Novato, CA 94947-3877. “We are pleased to continue supporting Vets.”

the 50 to 70 lane size. What caught my eye was the fact that South Point Bowling Center (64 lanes) and the South Point Bowling Plaza (60 lanes) shared the same address.

“We have two bowling centers and they’re both in the same building, and they share the same back office,” said Mike Monyak, Director of Bowling Operations at South Point for the past 21 years. Mike and I both came up under the tutelage of many famous and noble individuals at AMF that were willing to share their knowledge and interest in furthering our careers.

I first met Mike at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Tacoma, Washington, when AMF stationed me there in a promo-tion’s capacity for their properties in Oregon and Wash-ington. Mike was the Assistant Manager, working with General Manager Bill Boswell, a longtime veteran that had managed centers for AMF throughout California, Nevada and Washington.

“I learned a lot from Boswell,” commented Mike, “par-ticularly in regard to financial statements and the comput-erized scoring system.” My immediate reaction to Mike’s comment was that Bill always seemed so regimented in everything that he did. “He was a retired Marine,” stated Monyak, as he chuckled at my remark.

When I left the northwest later that year, AMF stationed me at New College Park Bowl in Las Vegas, where I spent a brief stint as General Manager before beginning my trek towards the corporate office in a series of moves (and advancements) across the country. Just a few years later, Mike was promoted to General Manager of New College Bowl, at the tender age of 23.

As we continued to converse about our past, I was sur-prised at how much our early careers mirrored one another, including a three-year segment on the Professional Bowl-ers Tour. Mike was sponsored by Eddie Hurd, who replaced Boswell at Bowlero Lanes. Bill had left AMF for “an offer he couldn’t refuse” at the new privately held Edgewater Casino and Bowling Lanes in Laughlin, Nevada.

“I didn’t lose any money, but I didn’t make any either,” Monyak said of his time on the tour. He eventually hooked up once again with Boswell at the Edgewater Casino and Bowling Lanes in 1986. That’s when Mike developed an interest in the computerized systems offered at Edgewater and put his knowledge to work arranging for a vast number of Sweeper Leagues that would converge upon the center every weekend.

Monyak returned to Tacoma in 1989 to care for his fa-ther before he passed away. He was then approached by a friend to return to Las Vegas and help him with a pro shop operation at the Gold Coast Bowling Center. After Mike made the move back to Las Vegas, another opportu-nity opened up with the construction of the Silver Nugget Bowling Lanes, a facility that essentially took the place of New College Park Bowl that had been razed a few years earlier.

Following the successful opening of the Silver Nugget project, an entrepreneur in the bowling industry, Michael Gaughan, began to take notice of Monyak and offered him a job to come and work for the Orleans, a powerhouse in the Las Vegas marketplace with multiple bowling loca-tions. “That was in 1994, and not long after that Gaughan sold all of his stock and purchased the South Point Casino from the Orleans chain,” added Mike.

“I came with the package,” said Mike, who has been the Director of Bowling Operations at South Point since 1999, and an employee of the conglomerate since 1994.

We now have a new leader in the currently operating largest bowling centers in the world, with the South Point Bowling Properties overtaking Inazawa Grand Bowl in In-azawa City, Japan, with 116 lanes, although we will have to preface South Point with a footnote regarding the two separate sections within the same building. It should also be noted that the Tokyo World Bowling Center in Tokyo, Japan, with 512 lanes, reportedly had multiple sections of lanes that might have been housed in separate buildings.

SUTTER CREEK, CA – Jakob Butturff of Tempe, Ariz. led wire to wire to win the PBA West Region’s Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort Championship at Gold Country Lanes on Sunday.

Butturff came into the event with a heavy heart after just losing his mother to cancer the previous Monday, but fought to win his 26th career PBA Regional title. The title is Butturff’s latest in just five years, but one of his most memorable, which he dedicated to his late mother. Butturff earned $2,500 for the win.

Butturff held a demanding lead to secure first place, but there was no shortage of competition for second-place. There were five other bowlers jockeying for the spot through match play until the last game, when David Haynes of Las Vegas secured it with a big 289 in the posi-tion round to earn $1,300.

This weekend was the 16th time the PBA Western Re-gion has visited Gold Country Lanes and was especially exciting for bowlers as they were able to compete in the state of California for the first-time in over 10 months.
