Powering a STEM future for young women.Verizon is proud to supportGirl Scouts Heart of New Jersey in developing future female leaders in STEM.
Welcome to our Fifth Annual Young Women of Vision Leadership Summit. Five years ago, we started a vital conversation around young women’s roles in leadership, and what we—the community—can do to further encourage and empower them. This continues to be a crucial conversation in our ever-changing social landscape. It is your support, knowledge, and dedication that will ensure the success of the Girl Scout movement well into the future.
For the second consecutive year, we are honored to welcome Verizon as this event’s Presenting Sponsor. With their support, and the dedication of all of our sponsors, we are excited to bring you a program focused on the celebration of women’s global contributions across industries, and the impactful work being done to elevate girls into leadership roles now, and in their future.
Seeing the lasting change girls of Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey have made through amazing acts of community service on their journey as emerging leaders, the Young Women of Vision host committee felt inspired to shine a spotlight on sustainability. No matter the size of their contributions, we know Girl Scouts are leading with strength and empathy, with their goal of taking action today, to build a sustainable tomorrow.
Each of our speakers this afternoon has a passion for the Girl Scout mission, to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We are pleased to have Magda N. Yrizarry, Senior VP - Chief Diversity Officer, Employee Development, Experience and Diversity with Verizon, provide the welcoming remarks. She will be followed by our keynote speaker, Tiffany Dufu Founder and CEO of The Cru, and author of Drop the Ball: Achieving More by Doing Less. Tiffany brings us her powerful vision of limitless possibilities for personal and professional growth, regardless of age. Closing reflections will be delivered by Emma Matza, a National Council Delegate, a recently awarded Gold Award Girl Scout, and truly a young woman of vision.
Thank you again for supporting us. Together, we will help build our girls into empowered women, who will discover their strengths and bring their skills, talent and experience to the workforce and the world!
Warm Regards,

Emma's Girl Scout Gold Award project focused around creating a supportive community for patients undergoing ASC scoliosis surgery. When Emma was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, she was told she would have to have spinal fusion surgery to correct it. After months of research she found a new surgery called ASC which is not as invasive. Throughout this process Emma didn't have anyone who had gone through this surgery, and wished she had a support group.

GSHNJ believes in the power of every girl. Our leadership program is designed to help girls build courage, confidence, and character by connecting them with a powerful network of other girls and dedicated mentors who provide unique experiences and learning opportunities. Each year, our Girl Scouts are taking on major community development projects. They conceptualize, plan, and execute these multi-step projects to initiate a sustainable impact on their communities and the world around them. After completing these projects, girls are better equipped to become G.I.R.L.s—Go-getters, Innovators, Risk-takers, and LeadersTM.
With support from dedicated volunteers, parents, and staff, we are able to give nearly 18,000 girls an exceptional Girl Scout experience throughout Essex, Hudson, Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, southern Warren, and parts of Middlesex counties. We have service centers in North Branch and Westfield, along with three camp properties: Camp Hoover in Middleville, NJ; Camp DeWitt in Hillsborough, NJ; The OVAL in Maplewood, NJ.

Fundamentals of the Girl Scout Program The Girl Scout Leadership Experience, the foundation of all Girl Scout programming, is a variety of fun and challeng-ing activities that help girls discover who they are, where their talents lie, and what they care most about. Designed to connect them with community members, the program prepares girls to empower themselves as they take action on issues they care about. At Girl Scouts, every adventure is rooted in three core ways of learning: girl-led, learning by doing, and cooperative learning.
Simply put, Girl Scouting helps girls discover themselves and their abilities through skill-building activities and op-portunities to try new things, connect with others to create change, and take action by developing projects that make their communities and the world a better place.
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience: OutcomesBy participating in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls benefit in five key ways as they:
Develop a strong sense of self. She’ll find confidence in herself and all that she’s capable of as she tries new things, takes on challenges, and learns from her mistakes.
Display positive values. She’ll learn to act ethically, lead with honesty, be responsible, and show concern for others.
Seek challenges and learn from setbacks. She’ll take age-appropriate risks, open herself up to new opportunities and experiences, and embrace failure as an opportunity to learn.
Form healthy relationships. She’ll practice leading with positivity, learn to communicate her feelings directly, and resolve conflicts con-structively.
Become community problem-solvers. She’ll identify problems in her community and create action plans to solve them.
Plus, we continually track, measure, and optimize our pro-gram to make sure these outcomes remain achievable and adaptable in a changing world.
“I feel more comfortable being myself after being a Girl Scout for over five years.”
—JULIA, AGE 11, GEORGIA
“My Girl Scout experience has helped me figure out a positive way to solve a tough issue that I might be having at school or at home.”
—ELIZABETH, AGE 9, CALIFORNIA
“I have met so many different girls with different backgrounds who I have been able to learn from. In Girl Scouts there are so many opportunities and so much to learn.”
—MARY, AGE 10, TEXAS
“I think without Girl Scouts I would not be where I am today. I think I would not get good grades, I don’t think I would do well in school, and I don’t think I would get along with others as well as I do.”
—DESTINY, AGE 12, TEXAS
