VICE-CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

Professor Steve Chapman CBEVice-Chancellor

ECU is committed to reconciliation and recognises and respects the significance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ communities, cultures and histories. ECU acknowledges and respects the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of the land. ECU acknowledges and respects its continuing association with Nyoongar people, the traditional custodians of the land upon which its campuses stand.

These truly are exciting times at Edith Cowan University (ECU).

Exciting because for the fourth year in a row, ECU received the top undergraduate teaching quality ranking of all public universities in Australia, according to QILT (Quality Indicators in Learning and Teaching) survey results.

Exciting also because ECU has been named in the Times Higher Education as one of the world’s best universities under the age of 50.

ECU was granted university status in 1991 and today we have more than 30,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. We also have one of the most diverse student populations in Australia, with around 6,000 international students from more than 100 countries.

Within our comprehensive range of degrees we offer industry-relevant teaching and research, a supportive study environment, and award-winning facilities.

It’s an approach that makes ECU an ideal partner for Study Abroad opportunities. We have expertise in offering Study Abroad programs that provide enriching academic experiences for international students.

Our long-standing relationships with overseas institutions offer students the opportunities to study globally. We are continuing to grow internationally by further creating partnerships and collaborations to extend ECU’s global presence, attracting high performing students and developing recruitment channels in emerging markets.

An example is our successful relationship with Tokyo City University. Established in 2013, it is now the largest Japanese-Australian student mobility program.

Of course, Study Abroad is not just about academic achievement. ECU Study Abroad is also about giving international students the opportunity to experience Australian culture and study in the same environment as a diverse range of students. Ultimately, it’s a global study experience that contributes to making our students world ready.

We warmly invite you to join us on this journey and become a valued partner and member of the ECU community.

ECU has extensive experience building Tailored Study Abroad Programs to enable its partners to meet specific cohort needs. By the end of 2020, we anticipate that over 1,000 international students will have completed one of our tailored courses over the last five years. We are ambitious in this space and we do it well.

Our core 13-week program model includes English, academic, social and cultural components. Whilst we tailor the program in consultation with you, our expertise ranges from 15 students in a program, to over 100. As such, we have developed each component to provide the necessary English support, academic rigour, and core integration objectives, which we understand drive each of our partners.

Even better, 2020 will also see the introduction of a postgraduate research program in ECU’s Tailored Study Abroad, to complement our undergraduate offering.

With a choice of three intakes in 2020 (March, July and September), the all-inclusive fee per student for our Tailored Study Abroad Program is $10,800. Whilst this is for a minimum cohort of 15, we look to be guided by our partners for their maximum cohort number.

PRESIDENT MIKI’S ENDORSEMENT

Tokyo City University (TCU) has been collaborating with ECU since 2015. At TCU, our vision was always clear: to significantly increase overseas academic opportunities for our students. ECU met this with equal ambition and together we built the Tokyo City University Australia Study Abroad Program, which has given nearly 800 TCU students a tailored international study experience. The specialised program offers a carefully balanced mix of English, Academic, and Social & Cultural components. Our students learn English alongside other international cohorts; they complete academic classes that are credited to their Japanese degree; and they have the opportunity to integrate with ECU students through the Experiencing Australia Buddy Program and the Language Exchange Program.

CONTACT Chat with ECU about

the proposed program so that we can establish

our ability to run it effectively. This takes

into consideration dates, duration, student numbers, resources, etc.

APPLY Students apply for the Tailored Study Abroad

program via ECU’s online application portal either

directly or with the support of an ECU

representative. They select the course code X01 for undergraduate

or X02 for postgraduate, and upload supporting

documents.

THE ECU PARTNER JOURNEYDeveloping a Tailored Study Abroad Program can take time, depending on a number of factors. With that in mind, we have developed the Partner Journey, which reflects the process we undertake to realise the full potential of an ECU-partner program, from first contact to the students’ safe arrival.

ARRIVE Students are greeted at the airport by ECU on arrival. They are guided

to their accommodation, where they undertake check-in. The next day,

Orientation commences.

NEGOTIATION Agree to the terms of

the contract in writing. ECU will then draft the

agreement and reach out to our partner’s preferred

contact to review and ensure we can progress

to full signature.

INVOICE When all applications have been received, ECU will invoice the

partner for the program. This means that

students pay their home institution directly and the

institution/partner pays the ECU invoice.

AGREEMENT This is an

institution-to-institution agreement, which is a

contract between both partners that agrees to the terms of the Tailored Study Abroad program for the inbound cohort.

DEVELOPMENT ECU plans for the arrival

of the cohort of students, in communication with

all parties, including the partner, academic staff, ECC, and CLV. This also involves the recruitment

of ECU student volunteers to support the program.

“I really appreciate lecturers and teachers of ECU, and I will never forget this unforgettable life experience.”I spent three months at ECU as part of the Zhejiang Normal University (ZJNU) Study Abroad Program. Teachers at ECU were warm and friendly and my class was full of joy and happiness. I have made many foreign friends at ECU. My Japanese friends always have dinner with me and, when I left, we exchanged gifts. As students from all over the world, we often had meals together and it was fantastic fun.The most important thing I have learned is how to cooperate with others and to finish the work together. Before I went to ECU to study, I always did my work alone, but the lecturers of ECU encouraged us to work as a team to finish the work. I really appreciate the lecturers at ECU, and I will never forget this unforgettable life experience.I have gained a lot of experience and skills during the study at ECU, including television recording classes that really improved my shooting skills, and the literature course at ECU improved my English listening, spoken and written skills. Western Australia’s lifestyle is my favourite kind. I really enjoyed my study life in and I will never forget this kind of leisurely feeling. I also like the beautiful sightseeing of Perth. It’s amazing! ZICONG SONG ZJNU Study Abroad Program
