• Attached are reports from Pastor Steve, Vicar Lou, and Paul Goodman, Director of Youth and Family Ministry. The congregation recognized the reports and there were no questions.

Approval of the Ministry Plan for 2019-20

• Joe explained the allocated and functional ministry plan formats and that we have reduced staff at the front desk from 2 people to one person. We have 16 years remaining on the mortgage.

• A question was asked about mortgage principle payments and Pete explained that our payments are fixed for 5 years and this includes mortgage & principle. At this time there is $2.6 million left on the loan.

• Joe added that our budget is tight between revenue and expenditures. Also, the staff has never spent beyond their budget and usually spends less. In the upcoming year, we need a 5% increase to our revenue. We have received more giving per member, but we continue to have a 5% gap because we have fewer members giving.

• A question was asked about ways to increase revenue. Joe said that revenue is a problem nationwide and that about half the population is now identified as having no church affiliation. At Hope, MRT, the Executive Team and Governing Council are working on this issue and using member focus groups for ideas and ways to increase our membership.

• A question was asked about membership statistics. Joe said that worship attendance has been dropping.

• Motion made to accept the ministry plan, seconded and passed.

New Business

• Rolf & Jaynee Groseth will continue as Hope’s appointed delegates to the Montana Synod Assembly.

• There was no other new business.

Closing Prayer (Dick Deschamps)

Motion to adjourn, seconded & passed. Meeting adjourned at 12:00PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Kay Carrier, Secretary

Congregation President’s Report 2019/2020

This will be my final report as Bozeman Hope Lutheran Church Council President. My term complete, I am pleased to be handing the President’s responsibilities to the capable hands of Cindy Sease. She is a long-time member of the congregation, a successful professional manager and caring individual. She, with the other Hope Council volunteers and the Hope professional staff will successfully take our church and its congregation into the new decade.

In 2019, we had a highly anticipated celebration of 100 years of Hope life. Months were spent enjoyably reviewing the decades in which Hope has existed. These were reviews of national news and Hope’s beginnings and growth. A beautiful painting depicting both the first church building and the current one was created by a congregation member, Jack Hyyppa, another member, June Safford, created a celebratory poem and another, Eric Funk, put that poem to music, all in celebration of the life of this congregation. We ended our festivities in October with both a barbeque and a formal dinner. Our co-chairs, Deborah Larson and Darryl Kinion, along with our Youth Director, Paul Goodman, gave us an entertaining and informative celebration of 100 years of Bozeman Hope.

Under guidance from Pastor Steve Schmidt, Bozeman Hope Lutheran has continued to thrive. Despite the complexities of the world pandemic, Steve and his staff have effectively transitioned Hope to on-line services and gatherings. We continue to be proud of our church involvement in the Luther Seminary Internship program. Jaime Benson, this year’s intern, has proven once again to be the right person for our needs. She has grown under Steve’s mentoring. She has worked closely with Paul Goodman, our youth director, and Pastor Steve to provide our congregation with exceptional on-line gatherings and services. These three people have done an amazing job keeping the congregation together despite the need for families to shelter-in-place. In addition to Jaime’s technical skills, she has a unique ability quietly watch and to assess what needs to be done and a willingness to work to make it happen. She has become a desirable candidate for her upcoming call. We strongly believe that this intern program has worked for both Bozeman Hope and the greater Lutheran community.

Bozeman Hope continues, as do most churches, to struggle with its revenue picture. Some members, however, have increased their giving and we are slowly adding to our congregation membership. In this past year, we were blessed with a private middle school renting the educational wing of our church. Our educational renter has provided us the additional financial resources to address holes in our revenue picture. These blessings along with our Director of Operations, Pete Astrup, and a dedicated Treasurer, Elizabeth Linsky, who both carefully manage the Hope budget and track our finances, have allowed us to mitigate our budget shortfalls. Pastor Steve, our financial management staff and council volunteers are a particularly strong team. That team has made the decision that as we move into our 2020/2021 fiscal year to significantly reduce our budgeted spending. Our goal is to bring our expenditures and general revenues into better balance. In the coming year, we are being assisted through the generosity of an individual member willing to fund a 2020/2021 intern.

As Hope Lutheran looks forward to the new decade, it will have its challenges. An ongoing challenge for Hope Lutheran, and churches in general, is the recruitment of young volunteers. Hope Lutheran Church has always had a strong cadre of volunteers. People who have given freely of their time and talents to address the needs of the church and the broader community. We are, however, finding it difficult to recruit new young volunteers to take over responsibilities held by older members. We have been fortunate to add new younger members to our

Page 6: 2020 Annual Meeting Packet Final - Amazon S3 · 2. Opening Prayer (Pastor Steve} 3. Approval of Secretary for Meeting 4. Approval of May 19, 2019 Minutes of Congregational Meeting

6

Congregation Council. The council will work with these younger members to better understand this trend and to look for creative approaches.

Hope Lutheran Church will continue to meet whatever challenges come our way. For 100 years, this congregation, in its various evolutions, has met each-and-every challenge successfully. It has grown and taken on new and larger responsibilities. In my time as Council President, I have learned that as a congregation we need to make sound decisions but we also can take comfort in knowing that God is here with us. With God’s help, Bozeman Hope Lutheran Church will successfully evolve for the next 100 years.

Thank you

Joe Kurcinka

Annual Report

Pastor Stephen R. Schmidt

I have decided to have my report this year follow a chronological flow reporting on highlights in each quarter and finishing with some concluding remarks. The bulleted lists are not in any specific order. Please feel free to contact me if you desire more information or clarification on anything in my report.

Summer (July-September)

¨ I returned from my sabbatical in July having received three months for rest and renewal. While I was not able to accomplish everything, I had planned for this pastoral renewal leave, it was, nonetheless, a much-needed period to rest and become re-energized for ministry. I am grateful to the congregation, and especially those who served on the Pastoral Renewal Team, for giving me this gift and for Vicar Lou who stepped up and took on additional responsibilities.

¨ In early August we said goodbye to Vicar Lou who returned to Iowa to finish his seminary course work and complete the process to be approved for ordination in the ELCA. Lou has been approved for ordination and assigned to the Alaska Synod and is waiting for a congregation to issue him a Letter of Call.

¨ In August we warmly welcomed Vicar Jaime Benson. Jaime’s first responsibility was to assist Paul and me in planning and carrying out our annual family retreat weekend over Labor Day weekend at Camp Christikon.

¨ In August we also welcomed Headwaters Academy (middle school) to our building. They used our building throughout the academic year.

¨ September was the final push to have everything ready for the Celebration of Hope’s Centennial in the midst restarting all programs.

¨ We had a delightful community barbecue cookout in September that was spearheaded by Paul Goodman and the team he assembled. It was a great afternoon with music, kid’s games, big blow-up bounce house and slide, great barbecue served up by members of Hope, and concluded with an awesome pie buffet. It was great that several of our neighbors accepted our invitation and joined us for this picnic.

¨ We continued to hold a Picnic in the Parks series; gathering each month in a different park pavilion to share in a cookout and fellowship. We again opened these cookouts to the community and made a special effort to publicize them where the homeless gather.

Fall (October-December)

¨ Sunday, October 6 was the big day that was in the making for over a year, Hope’s Centennial celebration. First, I want to thank Deb Larson, who for part of the year was assisted by Darryl Kinion until they moved to Ohio, she was the chair of the Centennial Celebration and diligently attended to all the planning and took care of countless details that assured our celebration would be memorable. The day began with festival worship services during which our new Bishop, Laurie Jungling, preached. The worship services also saw the world premiere of a composition by Eric Funk for our centennial, One Hundred Years of Hope. The centennial banquet was held in a ballroom at MSU student union building with the keynote speaker being the deputy major of Bozeman, Chris Mehl. Entertainment was provided by the Ringling Five. It was a great event which was sold out!

¨ On Reformation Sunday we rejoiced as eight young men and women reaffirmed their baptismal covenants and were confirmed.

¨ In November the adult forum started a new class, “ProFuture Faith: The Prodigal Species Comes Home,” which gave birth to a new environmentalists group at Hope concerned with climate change and how we can make Hope Lutheran more “green.”

¨ During Advent we again held midweek soup/bread dinners and Holden Evening Prayer. ¨ Paul Goodman and his team put on another fantastic Christmas Shop where we provided gifts to

374 children. ¨ Christmas Eve services were held at 3:00, 5:30 and 8:00 PM with the 8:00 PM service featuring a

sung cantata. Over 900 people attended Christmas Eve worship at Hope.

Winter (January-March)

¨ We continue to see an increase in Ash Wednesday attendance. ¨ Lenten soup/bread dinners started the week after Ash Wednesday with Holden Evening Prayer

following. These were discontinued following February 11th due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

¨ We discontinued holding worship services at Hope as of Sunday, March 29 when the governor issued his stay-at-home order on March 28.

Spring (April-May)

¨ Holy Week and Easter were like I had never experienced as we were forced to move everything to online worship experience. Yet services were held, and many began the learning curve of how to

Page 9: 2020 Annual Meeting Packet Final - Amazon S3 · 2. Opening Prayer (Pastor Steve} 3. Approval of Secretary for Meeting 4. Approval of May 19, 2019 Minutes of Congregational Meeting

9

worship using Zoom meetings. We probably had close to 600 who worshipped at one of the two Easter services we offered.

¨ We began on Palm Sunday offering Fellowship Breakout Rooms at the end of worship. This is one of the positive by-products of this situation that several people have mentioned how they enjoy these breakout rooms and that they actually participated in them while almost never staying after worship for coffee fellowship. Thanks to both Paul and Vicar Jaime who joined me as the production team for our online worship services.

¨ With the Hope building being closed for worship or church activities, all meetings have moved to being online. Paul and Jaime also created some “contact points” for confirmation and Sunday School youth. While having Zoom meetings is not the same as in-person meetings, it is striving to maintain a sense of community in the midst of physical distancing requirements.

¨ In late April a partner at Hope offered to cover the expenses of having another pastoral intern for next year. The Governing Council had reluctantly made the painful decision to not apply for another intern due to financial constraints. With the magnanimous gift, I contacted Luther Seminary to see if there were any seminarians still looking for an internship site. To make a long story short, I interviewed a candidate and both of us agreed we would be a good match for each other. The seminary made it official and Alex Ohman will start his year of internship in late August. I am delighted that Hope Lutheran will continue to be a teaching congregation next year.

¨ Jaime will conclude her year of internship on Sunday, August 2. God willing, we will be able to gather and properly thank her for service with us. No one was prepared for how to do ministry during a pandemic especially with not being able to gather physically for worship. Jaime has done a terrific job and hopefully she will never have to refer to this experience in her pastoral career.

¨ The Leadership Team is developing protocols to follow as we move through the various phases of re-opening. Our primary responsibility is to maintain, as much as possible, a safe environment for our members and staff. I can assure you that we want to again return to worshipping and holding church events, as soon as possible, at Hope but we must to cautious and realize that even if we open up a secondary wave of COVID-19 could cause us to return to more restrictive practices.

¨ Finally, I do believe that God is with us even now and that we will make it through this pandemic. Church may look a little different in the future, but this experience may open us up to being the church in new ways.

Concluding Remarks

¨ Every year I am reminded how blessed I am to serve Hope Lutheran Church. I am also blessed to be surrounded by a wonderful team of dedicated colleagues on the Leadership Team: Pete Astrup, Jaime Benson, Dick Deschamps, Paul Goodman, John Parris, and Jen Poore. The ministry of Hope Lutheran could not be done without them. Thank you each and every one!

¨ While it has become a tradition for me to end my annual report with thanking Joyce for her love and support. It is genuinely heartfelt and I just can’t imagine serving Hope without her counsel and support throughout these years.

Sincerely in Christ,

Stephen R. Schmidt Lead Pastor

Youth and Family Ministry Annual Report

May 2020

As I set out to write this report, we are currently in the strangest season that I’ve ever participated in in my 16 years of ministry. I enjoy new challenges and having to think outside of the box, but in the fourth quarter of this ministry year we’ve been invited to completely invent a new wheel!

As of February 1, I have been a part of the Hope Lutheran community for 10 years. This is kind of hard to believe as I blinked, and all of the little kids turned into our youth group! I’ve felt that this past year has been incredibly successful, and I am so looking forward to the minute that we can all get back together and move forward with all momentum that we’ve built.

Summer 2019

Whenever I set out to plan a mission trip I have high hopes that the trip will be memorable and meaningful, both for our youth and the people who we meet along the way. This past summer in Garnett, Kansas something powerful happened in the relationships amongst our group. God was truly present and all of us walked away from that event feeling closer to the group than ever before. This was a great spark for the momentum that we’ve seen since. (Also, our other regular programs went really well with 150 children at VBS and 25 at Service Plunge.) Our youth group also started working together to paint the home of one of our own church members. We had roughly 15 days throughout the summer where we worked to help this family and this was so great that I am really hopeful that we can do a lot of this sort of work this coming summer, especially in light of canceled large group programs.

Fall 2019

We held an amazing new event in the fall this past year to celebrate our 100th anniversary. We had smoked ribs, brisket and more, including several people who brought their smokers out and cooked the food live. We had inflatable games and the Bridger Creek Boys entertained us on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in September. I also spent all of 2019 creating a video series called, “Decades of Hope” where we told our story from our opening in 1919 to the present day. This all culminated in a 10 minute presentation that included interviews of long time Hope members that was presented at our 100th anniversary banquet in October.

Our Vicar, Jaime Benson and I worked to re-vamp our in person confirmation experience. This gained great momentum over the fall and spring and I look forward to using some of the ideas and programs that we created in the future when we can get back together.

Other fun things that happened in the fall include a Chili Cook Off, Trunk or Treat, Sunday School programs and more.

Page 14: 2020 Annual Meeting Packet Final - Amazon S3 · 2. Opening Prayer (Pastor Steve} 3. Approval of Secretary for Meeting 4. Approval of May 19, 2019 Minutes of Congregational Meeting

14

Winter

We once again hosted Christmas Shop. Two years ago this program came under my leadership. I was blessed once again to have a fantastic team who helped to continue to refine this event that has been a wonderful opportunity for our community for years. This past year we raised over $10,000 for the event from area businesses and were able to serve 374 children, including 24 special needs students from two of our elementary schools.

2020 started out spectacularly. We had 48 Middle and high school youth attend our annual Chill retreat. Likewise, we offered a new 2-night retreat that included an afternoon of skiing at Discovery Ski Basin and an evening at Fairmont Hot springs. This was also incredibly popular, and we had 25 high school youth from Hope attend.

On March 6 and 7 we held our last large in person gathering at Hope. Our youth drama team produced “Camp Stowaways” and we had roughly 300 people attend over two nights.

Spring 2020

And then there was coronavirus…On March 16 Governer Bullock ordered a stay at Home order, forcing us to completely rethink what we are able to provide for our community. We have been working tirelessly to create worship experiences and meaningful connections in a moment that we aren’t allowed to be present together in person. We have been experimenting with many different opportunities and some have worked better than others. Our worship experiences are currently being held remotely via Zoom meetings. I’ve had several weekly touch points for our youth group, including an hour of check in and games twice a week. I’ve been holding a weekly Sunday School and also a weekly confirmation online. All of these have not quite been the same as business as usual, but they have been an opportunity to continue to connect and strengthen our relationships.

Looking forward

While I am hopeful that this season will pass quickly, I am also reluctant to jump to plan any of our business as usual programs, even for late summer or early fall. While this is a challenging time to work in youth ministry, I have been excited about a few ideas that may come to fruition, depending on the state of the world this summer. We have been forced to cancel all of our usual summer programs, including Vacation Bible School and our much anticipated trip to New Mexico. However, God is still at work in our lives and is active in our community. Here’s a few ideas of things that may happen, depending on how long we are forced to stay socially distant

Digital talent show

We are currently working to put together a Digital Art and Talent Show that will take place in early June. We will be soliciting videos of talents from people of all ages, as well as digitized art of any medium that we will display during this event. The event will be live streamed on a Friday night and will hopefully include lots of talents.

Page 15: 2020 Annual Meeting Packet Final - Amazon S3 · 2. Opening Prayer (Pastor Steve} 3. Approval of Secretary for Meeting 4. Approval of May 19, 2019 Minutes of Congregational Meeting

15

Digital Music performances

We’ve already recorded three musical numbers that have been used in worship. These are much more time consuming on my end than just showing up and recording music, but they have been a fun way for our youth band to stay connected. I have two more already in the works and we will continue to record these as time (and circumstances) allow.

Service Opportunities

I will be working in the next month to reach out to members of hope who might have painting projects that we could provide to them as a service from Hope Lutheran Youth Group. This is an activity that I feel could be performed safely and is easy enough to teach any youth who want to help. I am hoping to fill the summer with safe “in person” service projects that we can perform for those who need it.

In Person Programs

We currently do not have any plans to hold in person programs until at least we are in phase 2 of the cdc’s phased recommendations of how to interact with people. This has already created some big disappointment on my end, as I LOVE all of the summer programs that we run, and the mission trip is especially a highlight of my entire year. That being said, if something drastically changes and we can safely provide summer programs we have all intention to. This is the same for fall.

Conclusions

We do not know the future, but we do know that God is with us, and will lead us through to the other side of this pandemic. I have great hope that the church can continue to be present with our youth and young people and that the work that we are doing is helping all of us get through this together. I continue to feel blessed to walk alongside all of you and look forward to seeing where God will lead us next.
