Top Reasons to Choose Augustana:

• Study in an innovative and unique environment at one of the only liberal arts and sciences campuses in Western Canada

• Small Class Sizes: With a student-faculty ratio of 16:1, your professors will know your name!

• Residence-Based Education: Every new student is guaranteed a space in residence

• International Opportunities: one in three of our students take part in an international experience throughout their degree

• Earn a highly-regarded and globally recognized University of Alberta degree

• Build skills with hands-on learning opportunities to prepare you for the ever-changing job market

Where Are We?Augustana is located at the heart of Alberta in the city of Camrose—a safe and friendly community about one hour southeast of Edmonton (the provincial capital of Alberta) and about three hours east of the Rocky Mountains. Camrose is a vibrant university city; its 18,000 residents enjoy a community rich with events in support of the arts, social interests, philanthropy, and athletics. It was ranked as Canada’s 11th Best Place to Live in 2018!*

Our 40-acre campus is just a short walk from the city centre, a lively downtown core filled with unique shops, restaurants, grocery stores, banks, and medical facilities. Camrose is also the shopping hub for east central Alberta with a large retail district in the city’s west end. The campus is situated in ‘aspen parkland’ terrain, giving our students easy access to a variety of outdoor activities such as cross-country running, skiing, and cycling.

At Augustana, we’re doing things a bit differently. As a small, residence-based liberal arts and sciences campus, we’re focused on educating the whole person, which means that you’ll leave Augustana with much more than just a University of Alberta degree.

Instead of training students for their first job, we foster well-rounded individuals who are prepared for a variety of careers, who engage with the world as flexible thinkers instead of narrow-minded experts, and who become effective members in their own communities. Our graduates not only have the ability to navigate changing workplaces, but have spent time developing passions that speak to the real world during their degree. In becoming thinkers, researchers, communicators, and collaborators who have had the opportunity to travel, work with community organizations, tackle real problems, study broadly across disciplines, and form close relationships with peers and mentors, our graduates receive a unique experience tailored to their own needs and individual futures.

Why Choose Augustana? As a campus with a student population of just over 1,000, our size and exclusive focus on undergraduate education allow us to be exceptionally responsive to student needs and to provide our students with individual attention. In addition, we were called to action by the University of Alberta to be “strengthened as a living laboratory for teaching and learning innovation, to the benefit of the entire university” (UAlberta Strategic Plan, For the Public Good).

At Augustana, you can study in a welcoming community that takes an interest in what’s important to you while you earn a world-class degree from one of the Top 5 Universities in Canada.

Augustana Advantage

You’re unique, your education should be too!

New Calendar: 3-11 Here, our classes don’t just stay in the classrooms. We’ve created an innovative calendar, 3-11 (pronounced “three-eleven”), which is different from the traditional university schedule wherein students take two terms every year consisting of five courses each. Instead, we have designed a schedule to maximize high-impact learning opportunities, including group research projects, intense workshops, field experiences, educational travel, and applied work with community organizations and businesses.

Our Fall and Winter terms are reconfigured to begin with a 3-week block, where students only take one course and faculty only teach one course. Without competing academic obligations, students and professors spend more time together and engage in activities that do not readily fit within a traditional class structure.

The 3-week block is followed by an 11-week session, where students take three to four courses instead of five, a more reasonable workload that reduces the normal stresses of university life. The calendar also allows for other high-impact practices for every student new to Augustana: a Project-Based Core, and First Year Seminars.

Project-Based Core In addition to the calendar, Augustana has developed innovations that further students’ ability to work in teams throughout their degree, including a project-based core. By implementing project-based learning, where students work together to tackle real-world issues, we are preparing our graduates for the constantly changing workplaces of the future. Students at Augustana are encouraged to be creative thinkers and to collaborate across a wide spectrum of disciplines. Completing projects on real issues, or what we have termed “wicked problems”, in partnership with community organizations, helps students to develop skills not just as academics but as valuable employees and citizens.

First Year SeminarsWhat do zombies, dinosaurs, and Harry Potter have in common? They are all First Year Seminar topics that students new to Augustana can choose from for the Fall 3-week block as part of their Project-Based Core. While the seminar topics will vary, the goal of these courses are the same: introducing students to university-level learning by guiding them to critically engage with multiple perspectives. During their First Year Seminar, students are building the skills and confidence they need to succeed throughout their entire degree within the first three weeks of university. Our seminars are limited to 25 students each. Students, therefore, engage deeply with course content and create close relationships with their professors and classmates.

The core is meant to encourage broad study across several disciplines. Instead of training our students for one specific job, we offer them the means to explore various subjects and build on the skills employers are looking for that span wide-ranging markets and vocations. Essentially, we encourage them to develop the skill sets that are sought by employers both now and well into the future, regardless of the ever-changing work environment. Along with completing project-based learning, our students have the option to study within thematically linked multidisciplinary majors, such as:

Law, Crime, and Justice StudiesThis major explores the relationship between law, politics and society, and between individuals and the government. Students can explore the role of crime in society, criminal behaviour, the historical evolution of the law, and the ways in which law and crime are connected to issues of social justice and inequality. This major provides an excellent foundation

for law school, careers in the criminal justice system, social work, and work with government and non-profit organizations.

Creativity and CultureThese days, literacy isn’t just about reading words on a page. We deal with various types of media on a daily basis, and preparing for the future involves learning to analyze and also work within the complex media environments that make up our world. Students in this major will develop the skills required to engage with our ever-changing world by studying literature, cultural studies, art, language, music, and/or drama. Those looking to use their imagination and creativity to read, write, draw, and perform, and then hone those skills, are a perfect fit for this major. Graduates will be well prepared for a broad range of careers in art and design, communications, library and information science, law, journalism, marketing, publishing, entrepreneurship, and more.

Ethics and Global StudiesStudents interested in travel, cross-cultural experiences, social justice, and tackling world issues are a perfect fit for this major, which blends courses from philosophy, history, politics, and religious studies. Students will learn how to have a voice, connecting past and present in order to bring a global perspective to their projects and to employment following graduation. This major is ideal for those who are interested in public affairs, government, NGOs, international policy, or civil service.

Students can obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in the above multidisciplinary majors, but can still take courses outside of the disciplines that their multidisciplinary major focuses on.

For convenience, many services are located in our newly designed Learning Commons.
