Valentine’s Share a Dish
Food, Fun, and Friends! A good time was had by all who
attended the February Share a Dish on February 7th. Many
guests arrived in red, white, or pink clothing to celebrate
Valentine’s Day. Tables were decorated in red and white to
contribute to the festive atmosphere.
Three couples graciously participated in the Oldie-Weds
Game after dinner. This led to many laughs as the couples tried
to guess their mates’ answers to questions such as “What would
your wife buy first if she won the lottery?” and “What does your
mate do that annoys you the most?” The winning couple (Joe &
Judy Naranjo) won a huge Hershey’s Kiss.
Thanks go to the February hosts: Sheila Connolly, Gene
Gabrielson, Art & Deb Katzmann, Marc & Karen Koch, and Mike
& Heidi Neville.
March 13, 2020, St. Patrick’s Day Share-a-Dish

Lee & Sheri Miller, Norah Prior, and Joe & Linda Silagy) invite you to join
your Stoneybrook friends and their visitors at the Recreation Center on
Friday, March 13, 2002, for an exceptional evening of food and fun.
Detective Nate Boggs (with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office)
will give his personal story and will play the bagpipes after dinner.
If you feel “A little of the Irish,” you are welcome to wear Green. If you
feel “The luck of the Irish,” you are welcome to buy raffle tickets ($1 per
ticket, $5 for 6 tickets) -- sold in the Rec. Center foyer before the meal.
Please sign up at the Recreation Center in the Share a Dish binder
below the bulletin board in the hallway (or on the Stoneybrook website
under “Activities”). Please indicate what type of food you will be
bringing (main entrée, side dish / salad, or dessert) – which should
serve 10-12 people. We especially encourage you to bring a main
entrée.
Doors open at 5:30 P.M., and the meal begins at 6 P.M. We hope to

First let’s look at some of the animals to expect and identify some general characteristics about
their lifestyles. 1. Opossums are animals that live on the edge either in a wooded area or under a rock
crevice. They will take over abandoned dens or nests of another animal. Wherever it is, you can be
sure it is near water, a lake, wetland area or a leaking water line or hose. They especially like to eat
“bird seed”, rodents, snakes and carrion. I guess you could call them the local grounds keepers. 2.
Armadillos especially like our wetlands because of the grasses and porous soil in the woods. They love
to dig in loose soil mainly to eat ants, beetles. insects and invertebrates. Finally, they are more visible
in the cool weather when they come to open areas to warm up. 3. Raccoons are very sociable and eat
a varied diet including insects, worms, fruit, nuts, fish, frogs and bird eggs. They like wooded areas so
they can climb and look over the land. For safety they burrow in dens and thick undergrowth. 4. Palm
rats, also known as roof rats, prefer to live off the ground in fruit trees. One of their favorite trees is the
Queen Palm, which most of us have in our yards. That is the main source of their food. When we leave
the mature fruiting bodies hang from our trees it becomes an open invitation for a rat party. They then
crawl into our attics to sleep off the feast and begin again the next night. 5. There have been no skunks
reported, but they are also around the neighborhood. The most common one is the striped skunk.
Let’s look at the environmental factors that are influencing extra animal behavior. First and
foremost, it is breeding season. It starts when the weather begins to warm in January and continues
through March. Secondly, during the cold temperatures, with frost, all of our animal population
hunkered down trying to keep warm. Third, their food consumption was less. Now their appetites are
peaking. Fourth, the rains have begun again producing new shoots emerging from the plant life which
become tender morsels for an active animal diet. Fifth, it could be that they are refugees fleeing the
destruction of their natural environment as the development of the area along S.R. 64 is happening.
Their homes are being destroyed and their food supply is gone, so many animals are moving.
Stoneybrook is just one of the near-by places to go.
