Festive lanterns light the wayOn Friday, November 1, as the sun sets, the colorful Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Lantern Parade gets underway at 6 pm. With its glowing procession of light, music, and color, the parade begins at the Kailua Pier and winds through Historic Kailua Village and ends at Hale Halawai. Parade participants in colorful ethnic costumes along with music and dance create a festive family atmosphere. Parade participants carry chochin lanterns and luminary bags to light their walk through the historic town. Each lantern and luminary bag carry shared thoughts, prayers and personal remembrances of loved ones. As the parade ends, the lanterns will be hung up around the perimeter of the Hale Halawai pavilion, giving off colorful light and preserved memories. The evening’s festivities continue with a Japanese Bon Dance (a Japanese custom to honor the spirit of one’s ancestors). Festival-goers are encouraged to join in and learn a few simple dance steps to be a part of this traditional Japanese dance.

Signature ArtLinda “Lin” Huff, a professional, freelance graphic designer’s art piece was selected as the official image of the 2019 Kona Coffee Cultural Festival and its theme “Bursting with Favor.” The inspiration for this year’s design was drawn from her desire to create an image that was free spirited, bold in flavor, color and fun, just like the festival! Lin created her 2019 design from several free-hand pencil sketches of the letters and bean, until she found the right combination. Adding her signature broad strokes of black ink and playing with different color combinations created the final image. Her award-winning designs can be found around Hawaii Island. Find more of Lin’s work by visiting @ Designs by Lin Huff on Facebook.
Huff’s winning art is showcased throughout the Festival including the magazine cover, coffee mugs and t-shirts. Retail items are available for purchase throughout all 10 days of Festival events.

explore Kona Coffee Farm toursAs the Kona coffee region continues to gain worldwide recognition, additional family farm tour experiences, tastings and events are being added to the festivity of the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. Locals and visitors are invited to go beyond the cup, meet the farmers and see how Kona coffee is grown, milled and roasted before the beans make it into your next cup of Joe. In Kona’s nearly 200-years of farming coffee, we honor the immigrant farmers who sustained the industry and were committed to cultivating a dream for a better life. Immigrants from China, Portugal, Japan, Philippines, Korea and Puerto Rico along with Hawaiians and Caucasians endured endless hours of hard farm work, planting and picking the choicest coffee berries by hand. These Kona coffee pioneers added cultural diversity and a mix of ethnic traditions as they embraced Hawaii’s aloha as a shared value. The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival celebrates and embraces the many cultural traditions that have shaped Kona and its coffee. Today, fifth and sixth generation Kona coffee farmers work alongside newcomers to cultivate more than 600 plus estate and commercial farms.
Try your hand at picking coffee, talking story with farmers, tasting savory and sweet small bites infused with Kona coffee, and most of all, enjoying this iconic harvest festival!

The international world of growing coffee is fascinating. Growing coffee in Kona is evolving with positive impacts on the daily brew while trends and varietals leave room in the cup for a new palate. As the art of drinking coffee matures all over the world, coffee drinkers are looking for the next new exotic cup of Joe. Some Kona coffee farmers are looking to the future and seeing the opportunity to keep Kona on the forefront of the coffee scene.
IntroducIng a new varIetal—mamoOver two decades ago, a partnership formed with a diverse group of innovative partners including Dr. Chifumi Nagai, Hawaii Agriculture Research Center; Hawaii Coffee Growers Association and the team at Greenwell Farms. These forward thinking partners made a long-term commitment to create a true Hawaiian coffee varietal, one that’s found nowhere else in the world. After years of development, the partnership introduced a new Hawaiian varietal, aptly named Mamo. Mamo, originated from two distinctive Arabica coffee parents, and was named for its mother, Maragogype, originating from Brazil and well known for producing big coffee beans, and its father, Mokka, originating from Yemen known for small beans with superior cupping quality that arrived in Hawaii between 1950 and 1960. In the coffee growing world, the name Mamo descends from its two origins. Serendipitously, Mamo means descendant in the Hawaiian language. After waiting patiently for over two decades, Mamo entered the world market in spring of 2017 where it is performing well, particularly in Japan where it is highly acclaimed.
“It’s the right combination of genetics, perfect growing conditions in Kona and the commitment to a long-term outcome that makes Mamo such an exciting unique variety,” said Hawaii Agriculture Research Center’s Chifumi Nagai.
gesha excItes the world The coffee varietal Gesha is capturing the attention of coffee connoisseurs all over the world. Making its way to Kona, this story is being told through top honors and gold standards. The Hawaiian Gesha story starts with Greg and Susy Stille, of Monarch Coffee Farm who pioneered the innovation of introducing this exquisite varietal to Hawaii. On a trip to Panama, they fell in love with the uniqueness of its cup profile and knew they wanted to add it to their small farm on Maui. After consulting with mentors, researching terroir and Hawaii State regulations, they purchased seeds from the Hartman family at Hacienda La Esmeralda.
The seedlings were sent directly to the Hawaii state department of agriculture for a one-year quarantine as required by the State Department of Agriculture. After a successful quarantine, ensuring no threat to Hawaii’s coffee industry, Gesha was released to Monarch Coffee for planting. After much growing success on Maui, they expanded to Kona and started a collaboration and rich friendship with Greenwell Farms.
Monarch Coffee partnered with Greenwell Farms to do the germination, grafting and grow out in their nursery. After a year growing in the nursery, the seedlings were planted at Monarch Coffee Farm in Holualoa where they thrived. In 2018, the first harvest swept top honors in the State of Hawaii Cupping Competition and the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival Cupping Competition.
Wanting to ensure Gesha’s long-term sustainability in Kona, Greenwell Farms also successfully planted trees on their farm and today, Monarch Coffee and Greenwell Farms Gesha varietals have captured the state’s top coffee honor two years in a row. Coffee growing innovators like Monarch Coffee and Greenwell Farms ensure the safety of coffee growing and elevate the future of Kona on the world stage. Excitement is brewing. Be sure to participate on the Greenwell Farms Seed to Cup Farm Tours happening everyday during the Festival.

B e H i n d t H e C r o w n sUCC Hawaii Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition As scholarship pageants grow with the changing times, so has the UCC Hawaii Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition. The Festival was fortunate this year to welcome Jeannè Kapela onboard as its new Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition’s Executive Director. Raised on a small coffee farm in Captain Cook, Jeanné competed in pageants locally, statewide and at the national level. Crowned as Miss Kona Coffee in 2014, Jeanné went on to win the Miss Hawaii crown in 2015 while capturing both the swimsuit and talent awards. She also competed that year at the Miss America pageant and won the Miss Congeniality title. “The UCC Hawaii Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition organization gave me a platform to stand on that truly represented the four points of the crown, style, success, scholarship and service. This is something I have been able to take with me through every aspect of my life and leadership role,” Jeanné eloquently stated. “Stepping into the role of executive director reminds me that if it wasn’t for the Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition, I wouldn’t be who I am today.” Miss Kona Coffee is a scholarship competition offering valuable scholarships through its major sponsor UCC Coffee. Winners move on to the statewide Miss Hawaii pageant. As the new Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition Executive Director, Jeanne aspires to shape young women to represent Kona well on the Miss Hawaii stage and be prepared in every aspect. She works with the participants to successfully build stepping stones that teach branding, and social media skills. The UCC Hawaii Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship Competition is leading the next generation of young women leaders to being well educated and well versed in all areas of life. An esteemed panel of seven judges will be tasked with crowning the next Miss Kona Coffee and Miss Aloha Hawaii at this year’s competition.
Little Miss Kona CoffeeFormer Miss Kona Coffee Michelle Sakata Johnson has returned to run the Little Miss Kona Coffee Scholarship program for the younger girls, ages 4-12. Michelle’s daughter, the then 9-year old Christian’s desire to wear a crown in 2002 was the impetus to starting the Little Miss Kona Coffee program in 2006. After a long absence, the little pageant is positioned once again to help young ladies in four categories (Mini Miss 4-6, Little Miss 7-9, Young Miss 10-12 and Teen Miss 13-16) gain poise, confidence, and self esteem.
it’s a Coffee throwdown!What’s a coffee latte art throwdown you ask? It’s a fast-paced competition where coffee
baristas create and pour latte art, in a head-to-head, sudden-death match with the winner
of each round advancing and the loser is eliminated. All eyes are on the baristas as they
show off their skills under the watchful eyes of judges and of course, coffee enthusiasts and
festival-goers. Judges know their latte art and quickly
evaluate each cup on creativity, difficulty, color
infusion and symmetry, picking the winner
of each round as the barista sets down
his steaming cup of latte art. Will it
go to a sudden-death match? Will
the defending champ take it all
again? Don’t miss this highly
caffeinated event on thursday,
November 7 starting at 6 pm at
Kona Coffee & tea Company at
Kona Coast Shopping Center. To
build confidence, Kona Coffee & Tea
Company hosts a training on Monday
to ready baristas for the competition.

K o N A C L A S S I CCupping science Brewing the perfect cup is an exact science of identifying roast profiles and characteristics of the cup and requires a lot of expertise. There are no shortcuts in each step taken to cultivate Kona’s coffee from farm to cup. The farmer, specific growing areas in Kona, weather, microclimates and varietal all influence the cup.
During the prestigious Kona Coffee Cupping Competition, cupping judges, trained as Licensed Q Graders, will evaluate single estate farms and large farm coffee entries in a double blind tasting enduring objectivity. Farms from across the Kona coffee belt enter their best beans to put before these judges who scrutinize their harvest. After evaluating the each cup’s coffee characteristics including aroma, body, sweetness, acidity, judges give each cup a score, and the scores are tallied up. The field gets cut back until a final round is cupped, awarding two farms with the prestigious wining score. Sounds like science best left to the cupping judges.
Winners will be announced during Wednesday’s Hawaii Coffee Association Benefit Dinner in two competitive divisions: Kona ClassiC – single estate farms
Kona Crown – reserved for larger farms
