Design Competition Expo Dubai 2020 is a call for ideas for teams composed ofyoung designers and companies, promoted by the Lombardy Region and theChamber of Commerce of Milan Monza Brianza Lodi and Unioncamere Lombar-dia, with the scientific coordination of the Politecnico di Milano and the collab-oration of the Italy’s General Commissioner’s Office for Expo 2020 Dubai,Triennale Milano, ADI Association for Industrial Design, Fiera Mi lanoSpA, as wel l as the American Universi ty of Shar jah and Expo 2020Dubai Construction Department.The best projects, selected by a qualified jury, presented in this catalog, will beexhibited at Expo 2020 Dubai from October 20th 2020 to April 10th 2021, and inother national design events. The theme of the initiative, which is now at its 7th edition this year, is the creationof innovative projects and the creation of the related prototypes, the result of col-laboration between Lombard companies and designers under 35.

Design Competition Expo Dubai 2020 è una call for ideas per team compostida giovani designer e imprese promossa da Regione Lombardia e Camera dicommercio di Milano Monza Brianza Lodi e Unioncamere Lombardia, con il co-ordinamento scientifico del Politecnico di Milano e la collaborazione del Com-missariato Generale per l’Italia per Expo 2020 Dubai, Triennale Milano, ADIAssociazione per il Disegno Industriale, Fiera Milano SpA, nonché dell’Ameri-can University of Sharjah ed Expo 2020 Dubai Construction Department.I migliori progetti, selezionati da una giuria qualificata, presentati in questo cata-logo, saranno esposti ad Expo 2020 Dubai dal 20 ottobre 2020 al 10 aprile 2021e in altre manifestazioni nazionali dedicate al design.L'iniziativa, che giunge quest’anno alla settima edizione, ha come tema l’idea-zione di progetti innovativi e la realizzazione dei relativi prototipi, frutto della col-laborazione tra imprese lombarde e designer under 35.

Ai designer è stato domandato di rappresentare in modo originale il tema di Expo2020 Dubai “Connecting minds, Creating the future”, focalizzandosi su nuovi per-corsi di sviluppo e di innovazione relativamente ai sottotemi “Sustainability, Mo-bility e Opportunity” e di sviluppare idee progettuali sul tema del “ConnectingSpaces”, declinate in:

Innovative Crafting: inteso come oggetti di design per connettere gli spazi che ri-chiamano la tradizione italiana dell'artigianato interpretato in maniera innovativa; Digital Connecting Spaces: inteso come spazi connessi attraverso il digitale, IoT,nuove tecnologie di domotica applicate al design e information design;Design for Human Connection: inteso come strutture temporanee per connetterele persone (esempio: per il ristoro, per la preghiera, per i bambini, per stare in unmicroclima controllato).

Designers were asked to represent in an original way the theme of Expo 2020Dubai "Connecting minds, Creating the future", focusing on new paths of devel-opment and innovation in relation to the sub-themes "Sustainability, Mobility andOpportunity" and to develop project ideas, on the theme of "Connecting Spaces",in terms of:

Innovative Crafting: intended as design objects to connect spaces that recall theItalian tradition of craftsmanship interpreted in an innovative way;Digital Connecting Spaces: intended as spaces connected through digital, IoT,new home automation technologies applied to design and information design;Design for Human Connection: intended as temporary structures to connect people(example: for refreshment, for prayer, for children, to stay in a controlled microclimate).

The frame and the mirror-frame are realizedlaser cut steel, assembled, worked and hand-finished. Powder coating gives to the framethe appeal that enhances its geometries andcreates at the same time a play of soft lightson the surfaces.

Carosello is a rocking chair conceived fromthe idea of connecting people through interac-tivity and playfulness. It transforms the staticnature of a traditional seat into a moment ofrelax and fun. A classic object of child- hoodis reinterpreted in a contemporary key foradults and children, thanks to a 3D printingprocess with robotic arm.

Carosello è un dondolo che nasce dall’idea diconnettere le persone tra loro tramite l’inte-rattività e il gioco, trasformando quindi lastaticità di una seduta tradizionale in un mo-mento di relax e divertimento. Grazie al pro-cesso di stampa 3D con braccio robotico unclassico oggetto dell’infanzia è reinterpre-tato in chiave contemporanea per adulti ebambini.

Carosello is produced through a technology de-veloped by Caracol, that combines robotics to3D printing. It allows to manufacture objectswith big dimensions, using recycled plastics,with a circular economy approach.

Corolla is an innovative prototype for aweather-responsive coworking pod. Usingsoft-robotic principles, has been devel-oped a lightweight and flexible skin thatis able to adapt itself to outdoor condi-tions. Corolla is a technological oasis; ahybrid between indoor and outdoor, provid-ing a comfortable and efficient space formeeting, working and sharing ideas all yearround, and in any location.

Corolla è un prototipo innovativo di una co-pertura meteo-responsiva per uno spazio dicoworking. Usando i principi della soft-robo-tics, è stato sviluppato un involucro leggeroe flessibile che è in grado di adattarsi allecondizioni esterne. Corolla è un'oasi tecno-logica; un ibrido tra interno ed esterno cheoffre uno spazio comodo ed efficiente per con-dividere idee tutto l'anno e ovunque.

The Pod is covered by an inflatable skinsystem made of multi-layered polyurethanefilm, autonomous thanks to a control systemand sensors. The main structure is madeof steel and is covered with fabric. Theinternal space is air-conditioned andequipped with charging spots and WiFi.

Il pod è composto da una copertura cineticagonfiabile in poliuretano multistrato, au-tonoma grazie a una scheda di controllo e adei sensori. Il tutto è supportato da unoscheletro in acciaio, rivestito da pannelliin tessuto. Lo spazio interno è climatiz-zato e dotato di punti di ricarica e WiFi.

Co-Site is a space composed of modular el-ements where people can connect with eachother in a physical space through a playfulapproach that wants to stimulate creativity,the senses and discovery. A social space isthus created, formed by the sum of all thecreative interventions of the various people.

Co-Site è uno spazio composto da elementi mo-dulari dove le persone potranno connettersitra di loro in uno spazio fisico tramite unapproccio giocoso che vuole stimolare la crea-tivita ̀, i sensi e la scoperta. Si crea quindiuno spazio sociale, formato dalla somma ditutti gli interventi creativi delle varie persone.

The elements are moulded at low pressure. Thematerials are 80% naturals with phenolic resinwith a low percentage of formaldehyde. Theproduct is recyclable, it doesn’t burn and itdoesn’t emit toxic fumes in the productionsphase nor in the final product.

Gli elementi sono stampati a caldo e abassa pressione. I materiali sono naturaliall’80% con resina fenolica a basso conte-nuto di formaldeide. Il prodotto è rici-clabile nello stesso ciclo produttivo, nonbrucia e non si hanno emissioni nocive néin fase di produzione né dal prodotto finito.

Desert Star is a 6 seat star shape structure,held together by magnets. Its aim is to re-present different cultures and lifestyles,combining the traditional Italian design withArab luxury.

Desert Star è una struttura composta da 6 se-dute, unite tra loro da magneti, che formanouna stella. Vuole unire più culture e stili divita, quella italiana con quella emiratina ela tradizione dell’artigianato italiano con illusso arabo.

The structure is made from multi-layer panelsand solid spruce joined together with steelscrews. The padding is made of various densi-ties of polyurethane, covered by a syntheticlayer. The upholstery is in pure cotton. Thebase is in wood covered by a brass plate witha golden lacquering.

La struttura è in pannelli multistrato e mas-sello d’abete uniti con viti di acciaio. L’im-bottitura è in poliuretano espanso di variedensità, ricoperta da una falda sintetica. Ilrivestimento è in pura lana 100%. Il basamentoè in legno ricoperto con una placca di ottonecon laccatura dorata.

Eden is made by a steel structure covered withaluminium modular panels. It was designed tobe a completely modular element, easy to beinstalled, usable for any kind of events.

Eden è realizzato internamente in carpenteriametallica e rivestito da pannelli modulari. Èstato progettato per essere un elemento com-pletamente modulare, facilmente montabile esmontabile in qualsiasi luogo, rendendoloquindi riutilizzabile per diverse soluzioni emanifestazioni.

The ELIoT structure is made of steel. A sensorinside will detect temperature, ph, brightness,humidity of the earth and the environment. Thedata will be sent from the sensor to the serverevery 30 minutes. A mobile App for Android andiOS devices will process the data and returninfographics.

Fùcur has a practical and light aluminumstructure. The handlebars and the deck aremade of wood in order to give the precious per-ception of the warm and natural material. Itis possible to customize the product with dif-ferent colors.

Linking Hearts is an interactive installationthat wants to show how people, regardless oftechnology, can be interconnected through emo-tions. With the diffusion of rhythmic music andlights, the participants live a shared emo-tional experience, while a heartbeat detectortraces the participation (thru the heartbeat).The synchronization of the beats marks the emo-tional "connection" of the participants.

Linking Hearts è un’installazione che vuoledimostrare come le persone, a prescinderedalla tecnologia, possano essere interconnesseattraverso le emozioni. Con la diffusione dimusica ritmata e luci, i partecipanti vivonoun’esperienza emotiva condivisa, mentre un ri-levatore di battito cardiaco ne traccia ilcoinvolgimento. La sincronia dei battiti segnala “connessione” emotiva dei partecipanti.

Mondine is a sculptural installation inspiredby the ears of rice that sway in the fields ofthe Po Valley. For each base there are semi-rigid structures that oscillate. These "ears"will be internally lit throughout theirlength, acting as well as poetic kinetic sculp-tures, as well as possible signs visible fromlong distances.

Mondine è un’installazione scultorea ispirataalle spighe di riso che ondeggiano nei campidella Pianura Padana. Per ogni basamento siergono strutture semi-rigide che oscillano.Queste “spighe” saranno internamente illumi-nate per tutta la loro lunghezza, fungendo,oltre che da poetiche sculture cinetiche,anche come eventuale segnaletica visibile dalunga distanza.

The undulating structures stand out on 3Dprinted bases that act as weights and stabil-izers. 3D printing allows the production of modules with different patterns. Inside eachstem there is a glass fiber on which the LEDlights will be applied.

Le strutture ondeggianti svettano su basamentistampati in 3D che fungono da pesi e stabiliz-zatori. La stampa 3D permette di produrre imoduli con pattern differenti. All’interno diogni stelo è presente una fibra di vetro sucui verranno applicate le luci LED.

Sarah AlMaddah is an architect and artist bornand raised in Saudi Arabia. She graduated fromthe American University of Sharja with a bachelor degree in architecture in June 2019. Alberto Ciccalè was born in 1995 and lives inBergamo. He studies at the LABA of Brescia.

Sarah Joy Giacomelli was born in Brescia in1997. She studies at the LABA in Brescia, sheexhibited at the Milan Design Week 2019.

Isato Prugger graduated from Politecnicodi Milano in 2014. He has work experien-ces in Milan, Stockholm and Dongguan.

Opus Ligneum nasce dall’idea di vedere e usareil legno sul pavimento in un modo diverso ri-spetto a quello tradizionale. Un approccio in-novativo che sfrutta la sapiente tradizioneartigianale e concepisce quindi non un sem-plice parquet, bensì un elemento versatile emodulare che possa creare percorsi, connetterespazi, delimitare aree ed essere facilmentericonfigurato all’occorrenza.

SHAPEMODE SRLTIMOTHY LIDDELL, MOHAMMADABUALHUDA, LUCA BUSSOLINO,ISABELLA FLORE, DIMA SROUJI

SIKKA is an enclosure formed by two interlockingsails that recall the maritime origins of light-weight architecture. It is envisioned as a placeof informal encounter, where people of differentorigins are pulled into the same orbit by curiosityalone. The sails are designed to be viewed and touched from all sides, with bumps that pop in andout when pressed. Thus, the structure exists in aconstant state of flux, with new patterns inscribedby each passerby.

SIKKA è uno spazio racchiuso tra due vele che ri-chiamano le origini marittime dell’architetturaleggera. È concepito come luogo di incontro in-formale dove le persone vengono trascinate nellastessa orbita dalla propria curiosità. Le velesono progettate per essere viste e toccate da en-trambi i lati, cambiando configurazione quandogli elementi 3D vengono premuti. La struttura sitrova quindi in un continuo stato di cambiamento,in cui ciascun passante crea nuovi pattern.

The semi-circular sails of SIKKA are modular and maybe used to achieve varied spatial configurations.Each one is composed of a textile surface, a polymerstructure and a composite superstructure. Complexsurface patterning is achieved quickly and economi-cally through selective tensioning of the fabric layer.

Le vele semicircolari di SIKKA sono modulari epossono essere assemblate per ottenere varie con-figurazioni spaziali. Ognuna è composta da unasuperficie tessile, una struttura polimerica euna superstruttura composita. La curvatura complessadelle superficie viene raggiunta economicamente attra-verso il tensionamento selettivo del tessuto.

Tarsia is a circular table for eight peoplewith a diameter of 160cm. The legs supportfour strips of different types of wood, unitedto form a reciprocal structure that forms theload-bearing part. These are then hooked tofour segments of wood that form the top. Inthe void is hosted a container compartmentsurmounted and covered by a tray.

Tarsia è un tavolo circolare per otto personee dal diametro di 180 cm. Le gambe supportanoquattro listelli di essenze di legno diffe-renti, uniti a formare una struttura reciprocache ne costituisce la parte portante. A questisono poi agganciati quattro spicchi di legnoche formano il piano. Nel vuoto viene allog-giato un vano contenitore sormontato e copertoda un vassoio.

The table is formed by a reciprocal structurethat is at the same time structure and decora-tion, a functional inlay, which gives the nameto the object. There are seven different typesof wood chosen to form each part of the tableand coming from five different continents.

Il tavolo è formato da una struttura reciprocache è allo stesso tempo struttura e decora-zione, un intarsio funzionale, che dà il nomeall’oggetto. Sette sono le essenze diverse dilegno scelte per formare ogni sua parte deltavolo e provenienti da cinque continenti di-versi.
