WINTER 2019: KNOWN

1

Whatever our age, background or life experience, we all long to be known and yet at the same time we are frightened by the possibility. What would happen if they discovered what I’m really like, or what I really think? How can anyone really know me when I’m not sure I know myself? I am forever grateful for the people in my life who’ve known me at my best and through my worst and still accept me and love me for being me. It’s a gift I don’t take lightly because I also know the sting of rejection when people discover I’m flawed, imperfect and don’t meet their expectations. At the start of a new year we enter into this exploration of what it means to be known—by others and by God. In many ways this is merely a continuation of celebrating God coming among us as “the Word became flesh and blood, and moved right into the neighborhood” (Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of John 1:9). God came among us in human form to experience the highs and lows of daily living so that God would know us in the deepest way possible and because God wants to be known by us as well. I invite you to brave the elements of winter and join us in worship on Sunday mornings as we discover together more about the wonder of being known. Its my hope and prayer that through the many opportunities listed on the following pages you will also discover new ways to get to know others who journey with you in this church community. I look forward to hearing from you what it means to be known when I return from my sabbatical in mid- February. Pastor Anne

To be loved but not known is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear.

… to be fully known and truly lovedis what it means to be loved by God.

Tim Keller

Pastor Anne will be on sabbatical January 7 - February 17. This is an opportunity for her to have space and time to truly step away from pastoral duties to rest, and return ready for the next season of ministry before us. The Leadership Team requests that we respect this boundary by not calling, texting, or

emailing her during this time. If you need pastoral care while she is away, please call the church office to be connected with one of our team members that will be providing pastoral care. We are grateful for the additional support of Pastor Ted Nordlund, Roger Quant, and Chuck Fenrick during this time.

Questions? Contact Sharla Scullen, Leadership Team Chair at [email protected].

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY9:30am - 11:00am Upper Fellowship HallNobody knows for sure who wrote it, but almost everybody agrees that it is one of the most important books in the New Testament. Join us as for a journey through the book of Hebrews, led by Don Pelto. HALF TRUTHS BY ADAM HAMILTON6:15pm - 7:30pmConference RoomTrue or false: 1. Everything happens for a reason. 2. God helps those who help themselves. 3. God won’t give you more than you can handle. 4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it. 5. Love the sinner, hate the sin. 6. You can do anything if you believe in yourself. 7. You can’t love others until you love yourself. 8. Name it and claim it (the power of positive thinking). All true? Not so fast. We’ve heard these phrases all of our lives and while they capture some element of truth, when compared to the wisdom found in Scripture, they’re really just popular sayings. Join us as we seek the whole truth together this winter through Bible and book study led by Roger Quant and Roger Valois.

weekly beginning January 9 CONNECT: SMALL GROUP MINISTRIESThe Small Group Ministries at FCC are all about relationships. Many of you heard this taught during Spiritual Growth Hour (SGH) this fall. Our goal is for more people to know more people. To help you understand how this is lived out, we want you to keep two words in mind: deep and wide. Deep: LifeGroups (LGs)LGs are groups of people making a longer commitment to grow deeper in relationship with one another. Some LGs have met for years, some are restarting, and some are just getting off the ground. Some LGs meet on Sundays during the Spiritual Growth Hour, while others meet outside church. Wide: Small Groups (SGs)SGs bring people together around a wide variety of shared interests (a book, running, a meal) with a lighter commitment level. SGs often exist for a season, not indefinitely. Some SGs will meet on Sundays during the Spiritual Growth Hour, others will meet outside church. How can you get "in the know" with Small Group Ministries this Winter? CONNECT CONNECTION Sunday, January 6 from 11:00am - 12:00pm Upper Fellowship Hall We are launching new Small Groups and a renewed season of LifeGroups! Join us on this first Sunday of the new year to hear from our array of SG leaders and get signed up! COMPASSION, MERCY, AND JUSTICE

COVENANT WORLD RELIEF ANNUAL OFFERINGOffering Received Sunday, February 10thThe global mission focus for Winter is Covenant World Relief (CWR). CWR is the humanitarian aid ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC), and contributes funds around the world in areas of disaster relief and community development. Every year FCC raises funds for CWR projects designed to be sustainable over the long term and involve training and empowering of local people to sustain the work. Disaster relief teams are positioned around the world and ready to respond immediately in the event of disaster, both domestic and international. CWR is administered and overseen by individuals in the ECC. Overhead costs are low, with at least 90% of every gift going directly to ministry projects. Questions? Contact Louise Wilson at [email protected]. UPDATES FROM THE LOVE MERCY, DO JUSTICE TEAMWhat Would Jesus Do?Our church has had a committee called "Love Mercy, Do Justice (LMDJ)" for several years. The name is based on Micah 6:8, which says, "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." The members have felt led to build bridges across cultures, especially racially, within our church and on the Greater East Side. Diversity, inclusion, and meaningful relationships have been emphasized. Recently the committee has tried to encourage thoughtful and authentic, respectful discussion of how we as Christ followers relate to those in the LGBT community. We are a church made up of a variety of understandings of what the biblical call means to us; but we seek to create a respectful space where we can together seek God's calling to us in this area, which has been quite divisive. Let us commit to prayer for wisdom, direction, and unity amidst our differences. The LMDJ Committee knows that God has put different passions and convictions to work in His people. Other areas, too, are important: poverty, homelessness, incarceration, sexism, hunger, and more. Our work is to facilitate connections and encourage our biblical calling from both Old and New Testaments to see the marginalized among us and do justice! May we continue to encourage and support one another to be the church God wants us to be. If you feel God putting something on your heart related to this issue, we'd love to hear from you! Team members: Mauri and Phil Erickson, Jon and Michelle Fure, Jennifer Herman, Jorge Martinez, Pastor Ted Nordlund, Denise (DD) Peterson, Pastor Anne Vining, Louise Wilson. "RETHINKING INCARCERATION" WITH DOMINIQUE GILLIARDTuesday, January 29 at 7:00pmAwaken Covenant Church (506 View Street, Saint Paul)Join Dominique Gilliard (director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation for the LMDJ initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church) in this opportunity to learn more about the incarceration crisis in America.
