Welcome

Dear McMaster Students, Faculty, Staff and Community

On behalf of everyone in the Department of Athletics and Recreation, welcome back to what promises to be another very exciting year at McMaster. We are very proud of this year’s slate of programs and activities, selected and designed with the specific goal of engaging as many of our stakeholders as possible in life-enhancing physical activity.

As stated by our President Patrick Deane, McMaster is an institution devoted to the cultivation of human potential. As a Department, not only do we believe very strongly in this statement, but we also believe it is our responsibility to play a significant role in delivering on this promise. To this end we have adopted this statement as our mission and it now drives all aspects of our operation.

To deliver on this promise we recognize that we need to adapt to the ever changing needs of our customers. Clearly the issue of mental health and general well-being is becoming more and more important and as a result is at the centre of many of our new initiatives. The new Mindfulness Centre is ready for you to use. Enjoy a range of meditation, yoga and tai chi classes in the new centre.

We trust that you will enjoy our world class facilities and we look forward to making your experience as pleasurable as possible. Jeff GilesDirector, Athletics & Recreation

LGBTQ Inclusion in Sport & Recreation As leaders in sport and recreation, and as a key player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s Pilot Project to Address Homophobia in University Sport, it is important that we expressly note that all members of our community, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes, students and staff, are welcome to play, learn and cheer with us.

Accessible Sport & Recreation Programs We are committed to working proactively to ensure members of all abilities are able to access our facilities, programs and events. We welcome feedback on ways to better serve all members, especially with respect to accessibility. Please notify program area staff or contact Debbie Marinoff Shupe, Manager of Recreation Services, at [email protected] or 905-525-9140 x24640 if you require support or accommodations accessing any of our programs or facilities.

2. Recreation Members may keep articles locked in temporary day lockers only during period of facility use (rental lockers excepted). 5. All personal belongings must be removed from rented lockers by the expiry date of your service. Any and all articles left behind are assumed unwanted by their owner and will be disposed of after two months in accordance with University policy regarding lost and found articles Management is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen personal property. We strongly recommend you secure all your belongings at all times in the facility.

6. It is important that participants wear appropriate foot wear when participating in the activity areas within the ARC. “Street Wear” shoes are not allowed in indoor play areas.

7. Inappropriate behaviour such as swearing and physical or verbal abuse will result in the immediate loss of all current and future membership privileges.

PLAY SAFEWe want your experience in the Athletics and Recreation Complex and Stadium to be fun, enjoyable and good stress relief from the pressures of studying! There are many inherent risks of sport and activity. By following some simple safety rules you can help prevent injuries and play safe.

1) Have you eaten today? Make sure you eat a healthy meal and hydrate well before any kind of work out or activity (usually an hour or more prior to exercise)

2) Drink water while working out to prevent dehydration.

3) Warm up adequately for the sport or activity you are playing. If you need some ideas, speak to the personal trainers in the Pulse.

4) Wear all mandatory and recommended safety equipment for your sport – eye goggles are mandatory for playing squash, wear a helmet while skate boarding, cycling or in-line skating. Use safety harnesses during climbing activities.

5) In the locker rooms, wear flip flops in the shower and dry off after showering before entering the locker area.

6) In the Pulse, remember to put your equipment away after use and take extra precautions when putting dumbbells back onto the rack to avoid pinched fingers. Ask a trainer if you are unfamiliar with the use of a particular piece of equipment. They are there to help!

7) Moving soccer, basketball and volleyball nets can be dangerous if you are not trained. Please do not move them, just ask for assistance from the Service Desk.

8) Know your limit! Everyone has good days and bad days. Listen to your body and only push yourself when it is appropriate and take days off of activity when it makes sense for you.

9) Remember it’s just a game! There is zero tolerance for aggressive physical or verbal abuse.

Remember - If you do get injured, assistance is available at the Pulse front desk and the DBAC Service Desk. The Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre can help you get back to playing through a variety of health care services.

Tuesday evenings have been the highlight of my week for the past few months, and I hope to take more classes to build off of what you taught me. Thank you! You were an awesome teacher."

LyricalThis class is designed for dancers with some experience, but it is not required. Lyrical Dance often uses techniques from jazz and ballet combined to create free movement. Students will have the opportunity to learn choreographic routines that will allow them to express various emotions and often tell a story through the music. Although technique is important, and will be used and reviewed throughout the classes, this class will stress the importance of showing your style and and who you are as a dancer through the movement. Lyrical can be very 'outside the box' allowing a dancer to get out of everyday stresses and worriesandsimplyexplore.Instructor:AlisonMcAvellaMember $46.00 Non-member $92.00

"For the first time in my memory I was able to sit through a two day long Standard First Aid course without feeling bored for a minute. Will was simply phenomenal in his presentation style."

"Hi pulse staff,

I am a first year McMaster medical student. I have been attending the pulse gym since August 2012 and I just wanted to let you know how very impressed I am with the quality of the pulse gym and the staff members. This is the third university I have attended and the Pulse far surpasses other university gyms I have attended. Your machines are always in working order, there is an abundance of equipment, and your group fitness classes are awesome. Most importantly your staff members are amazing - always smiling and ready to welcome the gym goers. I also love to see your incorporation of people with special needs into the pulse staff - how wonderful. Keep up the good work."

KUNG FUShaolinKung Fu ClubThe McMaster Shaolin Kung Fu Association provides an active and supportive forum in which members develop and hone individual expression in the martial arts. This is achieved through extensive study of the ageless forms of Shaolin. The Association stresses a non-competitive atmosphere, instead focusing on a strive-together framework that incorporates study of both offensive and defen-sive techniques. Training sessions will generally consist of an intensive guided instructional period during which the students are exposed to the Shaolin com-bative methods. This is followed by a period of conditioning and sparring, where members are encouraged to put into practice the techniques they have been taught. Members are free to participate in sparring sessions as much or as little as they feel comfortable. One of our priorities is to create a relaxed, non-com-petitive and safe environment in which students are able to extend their limits withintheircomfortzones.Wefight,welaugh,welearn,weachieve.Instructor:Amar Hamamy (Chief ) and Salvatore D'Amore

"Just a note of thanks to you and your team for putting together an amazing alpine tower climb experience for our postdocs and grad students. One of the students told me that in her time here, she's never felt so supported, nor felt part of an inclusive community, such that was formed among the group last evening. This is exactly what we endeavour to facilitate. So thank you so much to you and your team!!!"

"I would take this opportunity to definitely thank you for the outdoor activity session today. Scotty was simply out of the world in the way he made us come out of our cocoon. I don't know how to personally thank him. I hope you can maybe forward this mail to him and thank him on my behalf. The session was not only ice breaking. It was ice "mowing". The group feels lot more closer now. Thank you once again."

"The canoe trip was awesome, and a few of us are considering going on the exact same trip in a few weeks. I'm also really tempted to go on the three-day Algonquin Park canoe trip in September - that's how much I enjoyed this Saturday (even in the thunderstorm!) This was a great introduction to a lovely Canadian experience - and Kyle and Helen, our guides, were great. They were professional, looked after us well and were fun to hang out with. Is there a Canoe Trip - Part Two in the works???"

"My first real ’yes, I am in Canada!’ experience came when I found out about the MOC and they came to talk about all the exciting oppor-tunities at the International Student Orientation day. The next day I went on the trip to Niagara Falls and a few weekends following to Algonquin Park canoeing. These trips were just the start of the en-joyment and the opportunities I’ve experienced with the MOC. I can honestly say that all of my good friends have been made in the MOC and I cannot start to comprehend my life here with out."

Did you know that over 1,000 students participate in an Outdoor Trip last year?
