LOCATION: Kings Landing Park, 3255 Kings Landing RoadHuntingtown, MD

DATE: April 26, 27, 28, 2019

THEME: Scouts of Kings Landing

Come join the Scouts of the Washington, D.C. District in our “Scoutly” version of the Middle-ages. This Camporee and Daycamp is based on the medieval period, so scouts should model “knightly” behavior. The emphasis of the Camporee is fun and fellowship, with a flair from the Middle Ages.

MEALS and LOGISTICS: Units will coordinate their meals and camping. The Cubscouts at day camp will need to bring their lunch or arrange to eat as a Unit. There will be camp wide round table potluck dinner on Saturday. Please bring a dish to share.

PRIOR TO THE CAMPOREE: The word “guild” can be defined as, “an association ofpeople for mutual aid or the pursuit of a common goal.” Another word for this is fellowship and in Scouting, we are a fellowship! Some guilds were differentiated by either their goals, or their occupations. At the Camporee, it is requested that your guild (Unit) bring a handmade shield (must be created by the troop) depicting the occupation or goal of your guild. These should be appropriate and tasteful. The sheild can be as simple as a large piece of painted cardboard, with a handle, or as complicated as you would like, remember this is your guild – your choice. To add to the medieval spirit, each unit camping is also encouraged to construct a campsite gateway with a banner or sign – with guild affiliation - to go along with the theme of the weekend. Also, developing a guild-wide cheer or yell will add to the excitement of the events.

ARRIVAL AT CAMP: To facilitate a smooth check-in process, prior to arrival at Camp, all participating units will receive a map of the camp with their designated camping area noted. Upon arriving at camp, Troops should proceed to their designated camp area and begin set up. Once at your site, the Unit leader or their designee should report to the host pavilion area to check-in.

VEHICLES IN CAMP: All vehicles will need to park designated locations.

CHECK-IN: Registration/Check-in is at Pavilion #2 and opens at 6:30 P.M. on Friday. We will have Camp registration Saturday as well. If you did NOT pre-register, you will need to pay all appropriate fees at the time of check-in.

CAMPER CHECK-OUT: For those camping overnight, check out will begin immediately after the Scout’s Own Service Sunday morning. Please refer to the check out sheet in this Guide and have it prepared for your camp staff aide. Please note your aide will be strictly observing and adhering to the Leave No Trace principles at check out. You cannot be released until your form is signed by your camp aide. Please leave your campsite area ‘better than you found it’.

FIRST AID: Our District Explorer post 1891 will be available for many first aid needs, and will be available to report medical emergencies. Each unit should bring their BSA medical forms with them, A-B. We prefer that the Units hold the forms andprovide a Point of Contact cell phone for medical form access in case of emergency.

TRASH: All trash is to be properly bagged and hauled to the dumpster by the individual participating units. Please bring your own garbage bags. We ask that you remind your Scouts to practice Leave No Trace practices.

FIRES: We mandate no direct ground fires, so cook stove or a metal fire-pitshould be used, such as a tin tub on cinder blocks or commercial model. Campfires are at your discretion, please ensure your scouts are exercising good judgment under supervision.

Use Leave No Trace concepts in all that you do this weekend. There may not be firewood available at the campsite so be prepared to bring your own supply. Please join us for a Cracker Barrel, announcements, and Camporee updates on Friday night(SPLs and Unit-leaders only); this Cracker Barrel will be hosted by the District OA Chapter.

SITE INSPECTIONS: Sometime after lunch on Saturday, the inspection team will visit your campsite to judge your gateway/improvements and campsite.

SUNDAY MORNING: This activity will provide a Non-denominational Scouts’ Own Service.

Events

1.) Cooking King Arthur’s Feast (a.k.a. Fire Building) [SCOUTS]

Set-up and Rules: Two stakes are stuck in the sand of the provided fire-pits about two feet apart. Twine is stretched across the stakes 12-18” above ground. Material including wood planks, logs, tinder and kindling will be provided that will be dry and easy to light and burn, and only three matches. At a signal of “GO”, all brave Knight will create a wood fire structure and start the fire to cook an imaginary beast on the spit (the twine). Time is stopped when twine burns through or the beast is cooked well done. Knights of the Roundtable may only use the material provided. They cannot hold the match or any other fire starter under the twine. Each participant needs to “bring his own knife” or other helpful items to prepare tinder, kindling and fuel as appropriate. Use of an axe is not permitted.

Solution: Make it right the first time. Before lighting the first match, start witha teepee or log cabin of tinder and some small kindling. Feed it slowly at first, adding additional fuel carefully, and one piece at a time. Make the structure as high as possible or next to the twine to burn it quickly.

Scoring: This event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

2.) Finding Enemy Forces (a.k.a. Geocaching/orienteering) [SCOUTS]

Objective: This event will involve a combination of Orienteering Skills and use of a GPS unit to locate hidden warriors seeking to overthrow King Arthur from his throne. Familiarity with the operation of a handheld GPS device is helpful. Warriors will be given a challenge that will be solved by the use of geocaching skills. A review of the Geocaching Merit Badge booklet is highly recommended or using on-line resources to learn how to geocache. Details ofthe challenge will be provided to all warriors seeking to locate enemy forces when they begin the event. GPS units will be provided, or you can bring your own.

Scoring: This event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

3.) Knight’s Training (a.k.a team building fun) [SCOUTS/CUBS]

Objective: The Knight mounts his trusty steed and proceeds around the course, collecting the brass rings using his lance. The “steed” will be fellow scouts. Either piggy back or 2-man carry. When time begins the steed may not stop while on the course. If the judge determines the steed has stopped, the patrol will receive a 5 second penalty adding to their time for each violation. Using the lance provided, the scout will collect the rings suspendedthroughout the course. After collecting all the rings, the steed will return to the starting point. Time will begin at the judge’s signal and end when the team returns to the finish line. Patrols are encouraged to bring their own push cars; however, there will be at least one available for the event.

Jousting Carry: The following carry will be used for the Jousting Competition:

Scoring: this event is scored on time to completion. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

4.) Field of Conflict (a.k.a capture the flag) [SCOUTS/CUBS]

Objective: Scouts will divide into two forces. Capture the flag competition willcommence, with each participant wearing flag-belts.

Page 7: 2019 Spring Camporee And Daycamp Leader’s Guide€¦ · of the events. ARRIVAL AT CAMP: To facilitate a smooth check-in process, prior to arrival at ... use of a GPS unit to locate

Scoring: this event is scored on accuracy and precision. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

6.) Bucket-head (a.k.a team building) [SCOUTS/CUBS]

Objective: Fill the garbage can with the most water beads. Unit will line up in single file lines. On each sided there will be a bucket, one empty and one full (the scouts should all be facing the empty bucket unless filling smaller bucket). When the event begins, the scout on the side with the full bucket will take a smaller bucket (provided) and fill it up, then provide to place it on top of the next person's head. The next person in line can help by using his hands to receive it, but cannot turn around to face the full bucket side. The process of passing the bucket over the person's head in front of you will continue until the bucket reaches the last person the which point the bucket is emptied into the garbage can and passed back to the starting point where the process will repeat. This will be done as fast as possible until time is called, the team with the most water in the originally empty garbage can wins.

Scoring: this event is scored on amount of water in the bucket. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 point.

7-10.) Field Surgery (First Aid Meet – 4 events) [SCOUTS]

A First Aid Meet presents the unit with a realistic emergency scenario and challenges them to apply all aspects of their First Aid training: assessing the situation, sending for help, treating for shock and hurry cases, and providing other first aid treatment as needed. This scenario-based approach is different from a skills-based competition, such as “demonstrate splinting a broken leg”, because the patrol must determine the best course of action and appropriate treatment(s). Troops are encouraged to review the “How to Handle an Emergency” section of the First Aid Merit Badge Pamphlet prior to the Camporee.

Objective: The Meet will consist of 3 to 4 scenarios (one per station), such as a Knight who has fallen off his horse, a Knight injured with a lance, a Page collapsed in the hot sun, etc. One patrol member will be chosen to play the victim, while the others provide first aid. For this reason, patrols should consist of no less than 4 members; ideally 5 or more.

Page 8: 2019 Spring Camporee And Daycamp Leader’s Guide€¦ · of the events. ARRIVAL AT CAMP: To facilitate a smooth check-in process, prior to arrival at ... use of a GPS unit to locate

Scoring: Each scenario will be scored based on a set rubric, accounting for factors such as assessment of the situation, steps taken, and correctness of first aid skills used. For each scenario, these scores will be categorized to award points for Good (4), Fair (3), or Poor (2) performance. A separate First Aid Meet award will also be given to the highest placing Troop based on the total rubric score across scenarios.

8.) Siege Engine [SCOUTS/CUBS]

Objective: using the trebuchet framework, complete the siege device using provided ropes and lashings.

Scoring: this event is scored on distance, accuracy and precision to field target. First place will receive 5 points, second will receive 4 points, and participants will receive 3 points.

Troop track: Lashings to complete the configuration of the trebuchet and launch the slam-ball for distance and acurace:

Cubscout Track: Trebuchet models will be created, and fun shoots will be conducted.
