OUR VALUESINTEGRITY is doing the right thing when no one is looking and behaving with uncompromising honesty. We believe in maintaining lasting relationships based on honesty, consistency and with the highest ethical standards. This creates credibility in our personal and professional relationships.

CARING is showing concern, empathy and compassion for others, ourselves, and our environment. Our concern for one another shows itself in our commitment to Safety first in all we do and never compromising on it. We encourage each other to be the absolute best and hold each other accountable to that. We help those in need, contribute to the communities in which we work and develop creative ways to be responsible with all our resources.

INTEGRATION is working unselfishly toward common goals across disciplines, teams, departments and regions. We believe that our collective contributions are greater than our individual skills. We will be transparent as a group and seek to understand each other’s expertise to provide the most value possible in delivering our services to one another and our clients.

INNOVATION is never being too comfortable with the status quo by developing new ideas and applying those solutions that differentiate us in valuable ways. We hold each other accountable for continuous improvements in our results and will not look at innovation as an end to itself. We will maintain an environment where we foster new ideas and encourage changes that can help us improve.

A MESSAGE FROM

FRED PERPALLFred Perpall, FAIA, CEO

Now in its third year, The Beck Group’s Social Impact Report manifests how we take our values of caring, integrity, innovation, and integration from words to action within our offices, through our industries, and into our local communities.

While we strive to be successful, we also think about how what we do makes a difference because, at Beck, we do more than build buildings, we build communities, and we build people too.

As you flip through the pages of this report, you will see what made 2019 such an exceptional year.

As one of the largest design-build firms in the U.S., we commit to focusing on issues that matter. By looking beyond the bottom line and analyzing our role in the community, we tackled challenges like shelter, community revitalization, and economic inclusion.

Internally, we continue to make strides that improve our workplace.

We foster a culture of inclusivity, where every individual can be comfortable bringing his or her authentic self to work. We encourage volunteerism through the Beck Foundation or individually through causes important to each employee. Finally, we remain committed to safety by maintaining some of the most stringent protocols in the industry.

Social responsibility is a quintessential part of our business strategy. There is a clear connection between a healthy business and a healthy community. Now, more than ever, we must realize this and come together to shape inclusive economies and cultures and extend opportunities for all.

KNOCKING DOWN BARRIERS TO MITIGATE UNCONSCIOUS BIAS In this four-hour workshop, over 350 employees participated in discussions to understand unconscious biases and the possible effects biases have on behavior. Participants develop greater self-awareness, voice thoughts, and opinions in a safe environment, self-examine, self-identify and self-correct possible unfavorable behaviors towards others and adverse responses to situations and events.

INTRODUCING THE NEW

BECK FOUNDATIONSince 2005, our Foundation operated with a permanent presence in the surrounding areas of the City of Puebla in Mexico, as well as in other Latin American countries drilling water wells in conjunction with nonprofits.

In 2019, we repositioned the Foundation. We also shortened its name to the Beck Foundation. Now, we have an opportunity to align our values and giving spirit under strategic pillars that align with our strengths as a brand.

SUPPORTING THE RESOLUTION FOR URGENT AND SUSTAINED CLIMATE ACTIONIn 2019, the AIA passed the Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action, calling on the industry to support and prioritize climate action through the decarbonization of buildings. Buildings consume 40 percent of all U.S. energy, which means architects and contractors play a vital role in reducing the impacts on the environment.

To do our part, we explored ways to determine the least impactful building materials and the most efficient mechanical systems for the life of a project. By improving processes and deepening collaboration, we can make progress toward our energy use reduction, water conservation, and healthy building material goals.

OUR PROGRESS ON THE AIA 2030 COMMITMENT We signed the AIA 2030 Commitment to energy efficient building design, with a goal of being carbon neutral by the year 2030. In 2019, our target was a 70 percent energy use intensity (EUI) reduction.

OUR COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATIONWe commit to building strong communities that enhance lives and conserve resources.
