“People ministering to people for Christ’s sake.”

*A Note from the Interim Search Committee* By Sally Reynolds

After seven+plus months First Presbyterian Church is blessed and honored to have Rev. Dr. Miles White join us to serve as our Interim Pastor. His contract will be for a duration of one year. However, it can be shorter or longer depending on when our Church has secured a full-time pastor.

Rev. White attended Panhandle A & M College in Goodwell, Oklahoma and graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS Degree in Production Management. He earned his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii, his Masters in Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and his Doctorate of Ministering in preaching. He was ordained in the PC USA in 1984.

After graduation from college, Rev. White served twenty years in the U.S. Army Medical Service with postings to Germany, Japan, and Viet Nam, as well as serveral East Coast assignments. He served in Presbyterian Churches in Louisiana and Missouri. After 25 years of seminary and service to congregations he retired and he and his wife moved to San Antonio, Texas. He has served as Interim Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of New Braunfels and Crisis Interim at St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Boerne, Texas. Rev. White also served five years as Stated Clerk at Mission Presbytery.

Rev. White is a widower and has two grown children, one son and one daughter. He is the proud grandfather of 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He enjoys walking, reading, and working on his computer. He classifies his style of preaching as informal and he stated he doesn’t recycle his sermons.

As our Interim Pastor, Rev. White recognizes that one of his primary functions will be to help the Church secure a full-time pastor. He has stressed the importance of input from the congregation on the qualities they want in a pastor. With this in mind he will be setting up a series of house meetings sometime in the future.

Office hours will be Wednesday noon to Monday noon.

Please welcome Rev. Dr. Miles White to our Church Family!

Nursery care will be available for children who have not yet been to Kindergarten.

Entry points will be the double doors under the carport and closest to the elevator, the double doors facing Laurel Street that open

into the Vestibule, as well as the door on Magnolia Street beside the wooden deck.

Building Updates

You may have noticed several changes around the building and grounds. Some of you may know what

these changes have been about, but we wanted to explain a little further, and also give an update of on-

going issues.

I’m sure many of you have heard about the issues we were having with homeless people living in the AC

alcove by the Youth Center. In particular an individual was living in the alcove, leaving food and trash

which drew rodents to the area. In spite of the “No Trespassing” sign placed in the alcove (which he

tore down) he was continuing to live in the alcove. There was a criminal trespassing warning issued to

this gentleman. He has been asked not to return to the property. After this, the Men’s Group kindly had

a gate installed and some wire put in where the AC alcove is to try to avoid further issues such as this. THANK YOU Men’s Group!

Unfortunately, while the volunteers from the UMArmy were staying here we had another issue with

another person walking into the church around 10;00pm and asking the volunteers for a ride and money.

About an hour later this same gentleman started banging on the door of the Youth Center. He

approached Carolina the following morning, and while a police report was being filed, the gentleman was

outside and approached one of our members.

These are just a couple of examples of why Session voted to limit the accessibility to the church and

have the main entry point the church office door. Things can happen quickly just as they did when the

gentleman walked into the gym with the volunteers. With summer coming and more volunteers coming

to stay and events such as VBS and Pirates Landing gearing up, it’s not only our desire to keep office staff and members

safe, but also visitors to our church. The police have asked that we begin calling 911 immediately if we notice someone on

the grounds that looks as if he would be a danger to us.

At this time, Session members have been given access codes to enter the building through the office doors. If there is

an event at the church, a member of staff or Session will be present to open the areas of the church

that are needed for that event.

We’ve also had some recent concerns about parking lot access. Due to the inconsideration of others in

the community, it remains necessary to leave the chain engaged at the Magnolia Street entrance. Just

this morning I came in and there was a truck with an attached boat parked across all the handicap

parking spots on Magnolia Street, no one was in the truck. It was parked there quite some time. If that entrance was

opened to the public that vehicle probably would have been parked on the parking lot. As the weather heats up, so does

the parking lot asphalt, making it softer and easier to damage with larger trucks with heavy boats and trailers attached.

Repairing damages to the parking lot, unfortunately, is costly, and not something that we have in our budget to take care

of at this time.

We appreciate the continued support of our congregation while we adjust to the changes that are happening around the

church.

Worship Committee By Adelaide Marlatt

The Worship Committee is completing another busy month with the close of May, 2019. Worship services, special meetings etc., seem to involve a lot of people and keep up thinking and praying the right decisions are being made as we plan worship and participate in the many areas where we play a role. We have completed our role of inviting available ministers and lay people to lead our worship and now we are looking forward to working with our new Interim minister to develop worship with his guidance as we move into summer worship which is usually more casual in Fellowship hall. Many are looking forward to singing their own particular favorite hymn as part of our summer worship. However, before we start talking about June, there are many thank yous to be handed out to the many who assisted in our worship and events in during May. MINISTERING TO THE COMMUNITY

PDA Host Site

Hosting Community Volunteers by Kimberly Durkee

During the week of May 19-May 26th, the Presbyterian Disaster

Assistance had volunteers from UMArmy stay in our dorm rooms and

utilize our facilities while they ministered to the community by

volunteering. They worked primarily in the Copano Ridge area replacing

a ceiling and building fences. However, we all know that while we have one

plan, God often has something else planned. Their first day here, a group

of volunteers that included a doctor left the transfer station after making

a debris run. There they came upon a vehicle that had a husband and wife in it. The husband

was driving and had pulled over and suffered a massive heart attack. Doctor Gregory, as the

group calls him, was able to immediately get out and, discovering that his heart had stopped,

began CPR on the gentleman. Pastor Suzette and Aiden, the group leaders, and college aged

volunteers were able to come to the aid of the wife and pray over them,

and Pastor Suzette drove her to the hospital. At last report, Pastor

Suzette said the gentleman, Mr. Brown, was awake and able to

squeeze his wife’s hand. The doctor’s have no explanation for his

miraculous recovery. Pastor Suzette later told me there were several

decisions made months and months ago about the trip and that the

group truly believes God had his hand on every step in the planning

of this trip to Rockport. We are truly blessed to be able to meet these

volunteers and hear the stories they have to share.

More Odds and Ends…..

Fathers Are Wonderful People

By Helen Steiner Rice

Fathers are wonderful people too little understood,

And we do not sing their praises as often as we should…

For somehow Father seems to be

the man who pays the bills, While Mother binds up little hurts

and nurses all our ills…

And Father struggles daily to live up to his image

As protector and provider and hero of the scrimmage…

And perhaps that is the reason

we sometimes get the notion That fathers are not subject to the thing we call emotion,

But if you look inside Dad’s heart,

where no one else can see, You’ll find he’s sentimental

and as soft as he can be…

But he’s so busy every day in the grueling race of life,

He leaves the sentimental stuff to his partner and his wife…

But fathers are just wonderful

in a million different ways, And they merit loving compliments

and accolades of praise,

For the only reason Dad aspires to fortune and success

Is to make the family proud of him and to bring them happiness…

And like our heavenly Father,

he’s a guardian and a guide, Someone that we can count on

to be always on our side.
