From the PrincipalDear Parents,
Rincon Vista is doing great things for our school and community! We want to send a big thank you to all of our students for returning their Federal Impact Aid form! All but two forms have been returned! Outstanding job teachers, students, and parents!
Make a Difference Day was a huge success! With the help of the RVMS staff, parents, and community our school looks absolutely amazing. We had over 115 volunteers! This definitely has become an RVMS tradition.
Just a reminder regarding student attendance:
There is no way around it — being in school is important to your child’s academic and emotional growth. Chronic absenteeism (missing more than 10% of the school year) is an indicator of poor academic success in future years and when severe (more than 20%) can begin to predict the rates at which students drop out of high school. RVMS is a traditional school where instruction is designed upon the assumption that students will be in class everyday, barring severe illness or a major life event.
If your child misses more than 9 days of school in a semester, he or she will owe 12 hours of remediation for the absences. This is regardless of whether the absence was excused or unexcused. Please review your child’s school agenda for clarification of the school’s attendance policies.

VAIL SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 20 “Where Education is a Community Effort”
RAISING EXPECTATIONS
The following policies were enacted to focus attention on the value of academic achievement and to increase accountability.
REWARDS 1. Students who are “Proficient” on each section
of the AzMERIT will receive a ribbon. 2. Students who are “Proficient” on all sections of
the AzMERIT and “Highly Proficient” on one or more sections will receive a plaque.
3. Students who are “Highly Proficient” on all
sections of the AzMERIT will receive a trophy.
REQUIRED INTERVENTIONS 1. A District Assessment will be given to all
students for math and reading prior to the end of the first three quarters. • Any 3rd - 5th grade student who does not
meet the district assessment standard will be required to complete 12 hours of remediation for each deficient area.
• Any 6th - 8th grade student who falls far below the district assessment standard will be required to complete 12 hours of remediation for each deficient area.
2. If at the end of the1st, 2nd, or the 3rd grading
period a student has an F in a core course (math, language arts, reading, science or social studies), the student will be required to successfully complete a minimum of 12 hours of remediation for each failing grade.
3. If at the end of the 4th grading period a student
has an F in a core course, the student will be required to successfully complete12 hours of remediation for each failing grade during the summer break. Eighth grade students who fail a core course in the 4th quarter will not be permitted to participate in promotion ceremonies.
Remediation may include one or more of the following:
1. Tutoring 2. Intersession courses 3. Summer school 4. Saturday school 5. Additional academic courses in lieu
of Specials or Electives 6. Private or Commercial Tutoring pre-
approved by the principal
CONSEQUENCES Students who fail to successfully complete required remediation will be retained. High School AIMS results will be posted on student’s permanent transcripts.
GRADES 3 THROUGH 8
EXCESSIVE ABSENCES Regular school attendance promotes learning and achievement; therefore, students who have nine or more days of excused or unexcused absences in a semester will be required to complete 12 hours of remediation.
NOTES • Individual schools may choose to implement
complementary positive and negative consequences for all testing programs.
• Special Education students requiring interventions will be referred to the IEP team.
• Students will be treated as individuals and principals will have the authority to make exceptions.
• Any retention decision may be appealed to the Governing Board, as per board policy.

AWESOME OPTIMISTS NEED YOUR DONATIONS
Doing some fall cleaning? Need to make some room? Getting ready for the holidays? Don't drag all your great stuff to a local thrift store. Please consider donating to my student-led community service club at Rincon Vista Middle School.
For those of you new to our school, we call ourselves the Awesome Optimists of RVMS and we are a committed group of 7th graders dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others.
Your plastic bags from the grocery store can help area soup kitchens offset the cost of bagging lunches for the homeless; your used shoes, clothes and coats will go to men, women and children through various shelters and events that provide for others; your unused hotel hygiene items such as soaps and shampoos will go for care bags to be given to homeless vets; calculators, keys/locks, art supplies and other small items from home will be used to make busy boards for individuals with dementia; holiday items will decorate the homes of children in shelters. And this is only the beginning.
Please bring your stuff to school. If you need a receipt, email me at [email protected]. Thank you for your help in helping me teach what it means to understand the power of caring for our community one act of kindness at a time.

Important Roadrunner Information ContinuedMAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
HUGE SUCCESS! Thank you volunteers for an amazingly successful Make A Difference Day on Saturday, October 26th. We had over 115 students, parents, staff and community members working on the RVMS campus beautification project. There were tons of rock moved from the parking lot to the interior courtyards. Volunteers moved rock, raked rock, pulled weeds, picked up yard debris, cleaned flower beds, swept sidewalks and so much more. Our campus looks beautiful!
In addition, we would like to thank Vulcan Materials and Arizona Trucking and Materials for their donations to support our Make A Difference Day efforts.

It’s hard to believe that we are well into the 2nd quarter and the holidays are almost upon us! We have had many wonderful volunteers helping around campus this month: • Thank you to Sara Solano and Biggi Wilkens for
helping serve popsicles to students at the first quarter Pride reward party!
• Thank you to over 115 volunteers who helped beautify our campus on Make A Difference Day! 24 tons of rock were hauled and distributed to different locations around campus - great job, everyone!

Breakfast and 5k. We will need LOTS of volunteers…more info to follow soon!

Thank you for everyone who participated in the World’s Finest Chocolate Sale, it was a great success! We couldn't do it without you. Your support enables us to do more great things to benefit our students, staff and community here at RVMS! Also, a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped, or made Chili, for our Staff Appreciation Chili Cook-off ! It was definitely a hit! Our next PTO meeting will be Thursday, November 21st in the RVMS community room at 6:15 pm, please join us this month.
