2019 MEDIA NOTESThe Gaels are looking for their first win of the season after being swept in their two season-opening tournaments; the Army Invitational and Connecticut Challenge.

Wednesday’s matchup is the final non-tournament non-conference matchupbefore Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play begins on saturday, Sept. 21.

IONA VOLLEYBALL SEEKING FOOTING

• Smith is a two-time All-MAAC Team honoree and was 2017 MAAC Rookie of the Year.• Smith was named to the Connecticut Challenge All-Tournament Team. She led

the team twice with nine kills against UConn and CCSU, then switched roles against Boston College and ended with 15 assists.

• As a dedicated member of Iona’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Smith will expand her role and serve as the MAAC SAAC Vice Chair. She will be the Vice President’s of Iona’s campus.

• Since 2003, the Gaels are 0-4 against the Pirates. Their latest matchup came on Sept. 6, 2006 in South Orange, NJ. Iona has only won one set back in 2003.

• Seton Hall enters the contest with a 1-6 record. Its lone win came against Binghamton. The Pirates were defeated earlier this season by Quinnipiac in straight sets.

• Former Iona president Dr. Joseph E. Nyre is now the president of Seton Hall Uni-versity. He is one of many connections between the two schools in regards to coaches and administration.
